The Lightest of the Tesla Biographies around........2007-09-25
This book about Tesla does not offer a very definitive overview about the man and the scientist.I thought this particular biography on the life of Tesla was rather weak. There are much better ones around. The best one being,'The Wizard'.The pictures are quite interesting, showing many of his inventions and social situations concerning the work and exhibits by Nikola Tesla.Yet,from a scientific technical point-of-view this book is light-weight on formulas and construction.Die-hard fans of the Tesla genre, would all agree, that this book could be better.Maybe the authors wanted to attract more readers ,by not scaring them off with too much scientific jargon. I would still recommend this Tesla book.
A pleasure to read, and important information to know.......2006-01-08
Fascinating. Tesla was born Serbian Orthodox in what is now Croatia (formerly part of Yugoslavia). Came to New York as a young man and lived and worked in the U.S. from the 1890s into the 1930s. He is often described as being "ahead of his time": He envisioned, designed, and even patented electronic devices some of which are only today being practically realized. The supporting technology or scientific knowledge did not yet exist for many of them, though he accurately theorized that they would be possible.
Various circumstances contributed to his being little known in America today (and not credited, even by scholars, with all that he accomplished). These include his unwillingness to work with wealthy corporate sponsors (as did Edison and Marconi) and the fact that much of his later work dealt with weaponry and thus was classified after his death. Also, his papers were returned to his native land and the ensuing Cold War prevented Western researchers from accessing them until recently. Many of his inventions-such as radio, AC electrical power, and radar-have long been credited to others. He foresaw-and his work contributed to the invention of-telephones, television, X-rays, satellite transmission, and directed energy weapons. He was also eccentric, probably suffered from OCD, and lived much of his life in poverty. This book downplays his eccentricities and paints him with an honest but very admiring brush.
Good Overview, but..........2004-12-23
I found this book to be an excellent overview of Tesla's work and life. It's also a quick read. The book successfully conveys the image of Tesla as a remarkable inventor whose work and ideas were at the very forefront of the practical application of electromagnetic theory.
The book plays along uncritically, however, with Tesla's apparently self cultivated image of being a Wizard / Scientist. Many of Tesla's more controversial ideas and clams that were never, and have never been substantiated through experiment, can be dismissed as poppycock. By contrast all of Tesla's successful ideas rest on very firm scientic foundations. The Author makes no attempt to discriminate one from the other. Instead, unsubstantiated claims are sprinkled liberally with vague references to missing documents and political intrigue.
One excellent example of Tesla's tendancy for hyperbole is his claim of having built and tested an oscillator cable of creating earthquakes. Such a claim would have elicited knowing smirks even from 19th century scientists. Anyone doubting the foolishness of such a claim would do well to stay away from earth compactors and jackhammers, lest the Earth itself split in two! The Author(s)' failure to address Tesla's penchant for embellishment and hyperbole, and other odd aspects of Tesla's character (Other than frequent idle speculation on his sexual orientation) makes for a rather flat and onesided presentation.
A WINNING COMBINATION.......2002-08-05
How could Margaret Cheney (Tesla : Man Out Of Time) and Robert Uth (Tesla : Master Of Lightning) improve upon their past individual works (a book and documentary video, respectively)? By combining their efforts to produce this wonderful book, that's how. The informative text is interspersed with 250 b&w and duotone images that show Tesla and the era in which he excelled. Also included are 36 sidebars that explain some of the technical aspects of Tesla's works. After reading several other works on Tesla, I thought I knew it all. I'm happy to say that this book proved me wrong. Not to be missed by true Tesla fans.

Gotta Get It!.......2005-03-25
I recommend this book to everyone. If you would like to know some solid fundamental truths about fitness- including nutrition and diets, weight loss, and how to sculpt your body, you need this book. It will clear up many misconceptions and point you in the right direction. You will begin to think more about setting goals, and actually have a better chance of reaching them by applying the principles in this book.
Excellence.......2005-01-18
Of the availible health and fitness books, the Guide to Body Sculpting sets a new standard for what health conscious people are looking for in an exercise book. It is informative and easy to follow. The information presented is great for beginners or experienced. The numerous illustrations make the instructions even easier to follow and enhance the book over all. This is a great book for anybody looking to start or continue a healthy lifestyle.
Finally, a SOLID resource!.......2005-01-18
As a current strength and conditioning professional, I am delighted to see a book that provides credible knowledge to health and fitness consumers. With the plethora of information out on "how to shed pounds in day" it is relieving to know that I can refer my clients to this book without worrying about directing them to the latest fad in weight loss. This book is MUST HAVE for those who need sound, professional advice on strength training, or body sculpting.
Excellent Book!.......2005-01-12
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Body Sculpting is written by Patrick Hagerman, who was the personal trainer of the year several years ago. Without a doubt, he has only improved since then. This book addresses the total body, and provides enough exercises to keep the reader busy for a lifetime. This is perfect for both the beginner or advanced exerciser. The author really shares his knowledge, giving unique movements to target muscles in ways the average person won't think about. If you're just starting a workout program or have been working out for years but are ready for some improvement, this is the book for you!
Customer Reviews:
A good foundation for beginners.......2005-10-09
While not prescribing any specific diet or workout regimens, this book gives anyone who wants to start a fitness program that includes strength training all the tools they need to develop their own routines.
The authors, who come from power lifting and endurance sport backgrounds, recommend an approach that is similar to the one advocated by people like Wayne Westcott, Matt Brzycki,Dan Riley and Ellington Darden, in other words, low volume, high intensity with slow, controled movements. They do discuss other approaches, such as multiple-set training and plyometrics and come down against them, but don't flat-out say "Our way is right; every other way is wrong," instead giving the pros and cons of different techniques.
I also like that their nutrition advice is very sensible, advocating good, basic nutrition rather than fad diets or supplements.
While the target audience is newcomers to strength training, more experienced trainees can still benefit from it, picking up some new techniques, learning about competitive lifting or just getting a refresher course on the basics.
The best thing about the approach they recommend is that it's one that can easily be adapted into your life with your other interests.
good book to start with.......2004-02-25
Joe Glickman, one of the authors of this book, appears to have given the first edition of the book a glowing review on this site, unaware that his identity would be revealed ("I stumbled upon this book," blah blah). Anyhow.
I started weight training using this book, and advice from gym attendants at the gym I go to. I found it was more than sufficient to begin with. There was some bad advice in the first book that has since been corrected -- they've replaced the back extension machine (AKA herniator) with the back extension bench. And in this book there are some cautions that simply aren't true. For example, good mornings, stiff-legged deadlifts and bent rows aren't dangerous if you use good form and never use a weight you can't handle. There simply is no replacement for stiff-legged deadlifts or good mornings in strengthening the hip extensor system in a functional way, at least none that aren't as advanced or "dangerous" in nature.
My main beef with this book, however, is that it does not come clean about its bodybuilding bias. Everywhere the authors recommend 8-12 reps as the ideal. They could easily explain that different rep ranges are ideal for different purposes, and that the 8-12 range is NOT ideal for building strength or endurance, but rather for adding muscle, which is what bodybuilders want to do. If you practice a sport, you may actually want to develop strength while adding as little muscle as possible, in which case you would be aiming at reps in the 1-6 range; if endurance is your goal, as in much physiotherapy or corrective exercise, then reps in the 15-20 range should be your target.
The authors are dogmatic about the necessity of training to failure. Luckily that never made sense to me so from day one I didn't follow their advice, and I've made very good progress. Never but never do I aim to train to failure. Failure might occur, but it is not the target. The stress on the nervous system means extra recovery time and impedes strength development, even if it promotes muscle growth.
In general, the authors ignore the evidence that strength depends at least as much on neurological factors as on muscle growth. This is why they can so off-handedly dismiss the idea of functional strength, and believe, despite the evidence, that anything which makes a muscle bigger improves its function in the same way.
The book also perpetuates myths, like that you shouldn't squat below parallel. There's simply no credible evidence for it and people shouldn't be afraid of ass to the grass squats if they have good form (back NEVER rounded). In fact the stress on the knee is greatest precisely when the thighs are at parallel. Likewise, lunging with knee beyond the toe is not intrinsically dangerous. Nor are leg press or leg extensions intrinsically safer than squats -- in fact, there are many arguments for the opposite.
With these caveats, though, I can recommend this book as giving sound advice to start on a weight-training program. I've also looked at "Weight Training for Dummies" and it seems equally good. Sooner or later, though, if you're serious, you should read more credible sources on strength training theory, like Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning by Baechle and Earle; Supertraining by Mel Siff; or The Science and Practice of Strength Training, by Vladimir Zatsiorsky.

Nuts about Nuts.......2007-04-05
Like the recipes and the ideas of how to roast nuts. This book started a great adventure for my family into the world of us roasting nuts for a great TV/movie night snack. You can get the whole family involved and the kids love to get involved with the flavors.
Great Party Treats.......2007-01-05
This book has a recipe for every occasion. I do feel that several of the recipes are very similar in terms of the spice mixtures used, but the Balsamic Shellacked Pecan recipe alone is worth the price of the book. A great asset for hostesses or anyone that loves recipes.
Great Recipes - Horrible Binding.......2006-11-13
This book is full of fabulous recipes. My son especially loves the "Holy Mole" nuts. But the book fell apart almost immediately - I would re-order it as I use it over and over, if it were spiral bound or soft-cover. As it is, I have to keep the pages now separately in a file folder!
Great liitle book .......2006-06-08
This has a lot of old and new nut recipes. Trying to duplicate a great nut snack you had somewhere? Sampson probably has it in this book, or you can take the techniques she sets out and experiment. A good little book that I'm glad to have in my collection.
She's just nuts about nuts!.......2004-12-30
If you are as nuts about nuts as Sally Sampson is then you'll love this book. Then again, if you're not into making a LOT of different nut recipies you might want a general cookbook. Personally I found the recipies to be as good as one would hope and the presentation was solid (even if nobody would ever serve nuts in a martini glass).

Strips & Strings, a very clear quilting guide........2007-09-05
Evelyn Sloppy's "Strips & Strings,Sixteen Sparkling Quilts" is a very clearly written guide to making quilts mostly from strips of scraps. It was required for a class that I will be taking this fall, but I expect to make several more of the projects besides the one we will do in class. After using some other books full of typo's and bad instructions, this book is a breath of fresh air.

HAVEN'T HAD A CHANCE TO USE IT YET, BUT LOVE THE PATTERNS IN IT AND THE SIMPLE TECHNIQUES. IT WAS MEANT FOR SIMPLE PEOPLE LIKE ME. THANKS A LOT.

Book Description
This book offers detailed explanations of Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia disorders and their treatment using both natural and pharmacological supplements.
Customer Reviews:
Dr. Teitelbaum is a genuis!.......2007-07-08
This is the best book I have ever read about Chronic Fatigue. There is so much useful information, and step-by-step directions to heal yourself. He talks about which supplements and/or prescriptions are helpful, and the recommended doses. He also provides free information on his website, including some great lectures.
This book could change your life.......2007-07-03
My doctor required that I read this book. And I am so glad that I bought it. After suffering with this for nearly 10 years I know that my doctor and I are on the right path. I feel hope for the first time in a very long time. Educate yourself because you are the best person to advocate for you. This book will really make that job easier.
Fantastic looking back at Fatigue Now.......2007-06-20
I bought my mother this book as she was frightened and depressed at what was happening to her. This book and armed with one other, she was able to take charge of her life, get her energy back, started exercising, and soon she had a new lease on life and is still working on it. I applaud the writer of this great book. My mother thanks you and so do I.
From Fatigued to Fantastic and Pain Free 123.......2007-05-13
I am so happy with the amount of imformation provided in these books. I am struggling with chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia, among other things, and it's so incredible to have this kind of support.
From Fatigued to Fantastic.......2007-04-16
This is an excellent book with a plethora of information on the diagnosis and treatment of Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia. The author presents a multitude of therapies for managing the multiple dysfunctions involved in these disorders, many of which were revolutionary at the time that the book was written.
It is for these reasons that I give the book a high rating.
That said, since the book was released, new information on how to treat the aforementioned disorders has emerged, as new insights into the causes of these have likewise been discovered. For instance, it is now thought by many experts that Lyme disease is a major cause of CFIDS/Fibromyalgia, as is a certain genetic defect.
Also, this book, as most others dealing with CFIDS, did not deal much with past emotional trauma and how this manifests in the body as physical illness. For anyone who suspects that this factor has played a role in the development of his/her CFIDS, finding information that deals with this aspect of healing is absolutely vital for recovery
Further, I am more of a believer in natural approaches to healing, and this book suggests pharmaceutical drugs when other therapies might be safer, more effective options.
In the end, however, it is an amazingly informative book with important and useful insights which will help any CFIDS/Fibromyalgia sufferer.
Customer Reviews:
a must have for those with fms or cfs .......2005-08-24
An easy read for those who suffer from fibro fog. The author, a male doctor, suffered from the illness and eventually got well. Offers practical ways to get better. Mentions both mainstream drugs, alternative medicine, and diet recommendations. One of, if not the best books I have read on the subject. Great book for busy doctors to read.

Book Description
The biggest surprise - and disappointment - that life holds is that it is over so fast. The golden tomorrow, to which most people (usually women) put off their hopes rarely appears. This is the lesson learned by Helen McLean in her memoir. Details from a Larger Canvas is about a woman with the expectations of her time and class heavy upon her shoulders; in short, she is supposed to be much the same woman as her Rosedale matron mother-in-law whose life was bound up in sets of rules and whose life had little expression except in the form of materialistic acquisition and censure. Instead, Helen creates her own life - and, while painting a portrait of Margaret Laurence, finds a woman with whom she has common ground.
Book Description
Few institutions are as well suited as the monarchy to provide a window on postwar Japan. The monarchy, which is also a family, has been significant both as a political and as a cultural institution. This comprehensive study analyzes numerous issues, including the role of individual emperors in shaping the institution, the manner in which the emperor's constitutional position as symbol has been interpreted, the emperor's intersection with politics through ministerial briefings, memories of Hirohito's wartime role, nationalistic movements in support of Foundation Day and the reign-name system, and the remaking of the once sacrosanct throne into a "monarchy of the masses" embedded in the postwar culture of democracy. The author stresses the monarchy's "postwarness," rather than its traditionality.
