Book Description
Coleman Harwell, who passed away in 1987, was the successful and respected editor of the Nashville Tennessean for many years and later publisher of the Cookeville (Tennessee) Herald and Citizen. He enlisted to serve his country overseas during World War II, even though his eyesight would have disqualified him, had he wanted to remain out of the service. Always in My Heart shares the collected wartime correspondence between Coleman, stationed in England and Italy, and his young wife, Ann, who rose to the task of parenting their young daughters in Nashville, Tennessee with grace and good humor. In reading this collection, we not only learn of the challenges that wartime brought to both those served and those who remained at home, but we observe and marvel at the deep devotion that shines through the loving letters Coleman and Ann exchanged. Ann Harwell Wells has compiled and edited her parents' letters, and has added pertinent commentary to help the reader place the letters in the historical period in which they were written.
Book Description
“There’s a special providence in the fall of a sparrow.” --William Shakespeare,
Hamlet
B fell twenty-five feet from his nest into the life of Chris Chester. The encounter was providential for both of them.
B and Chester spent hours together playing games like bottle-cap fetch or hide-and-seek. They learned “words” in each other’s vocabularies. B developed a fetish for nostrils and a dislike of the color yellow. He grew anxious if Chester came home late from work. At bedtime he would rub his sleepy eyes on Chester’s thumb and settle to sleep in his palm. Chester ended up turning part of his house into an aviary and adjusting his social life to meet B’s demands. This was a small price to pay, though, for the trust and comfort of a twenty-five-gram friend who brought joy and wonder back into his life.

A Love Story.......2007-09-12
I found myself crying several times while reading Providence of a Sparrow, struck by the honesty, humor and insight of Chris's writing. It is not a book about Sparrows; rather what lessons can be learned from nature. A wonderful read for anyone who loves the natural world, has every suffered from depression, or believes that some of the most profound lessons in life can be gleaned from the most unlikely of places.
Tragically, Chris Chester died a horrendous death not too long ago. Although this book is not for everyone it, I can assure you it carries a message that we could all stand to hear.
Book for a Desert Island.......2006-11-11
Here is wisdom, a profound and insightful exposition of the world and its avian and human inhabitants. Chester's depth of spirit, breadth of knowledge, and width of insight are breathtaking. Read this book slowly and lovingly and you will like yourself and your neighbors better.
I'll never forget this book.......2006-10-16
I am so much richer for having read this book. It is lyrical and profound; funny and witty. The intelligence of the writer and of "B" his bird amazed me. I can't look at life the same way I always have, since reading it. Thank you Chris for writing this book.
First Book Review I ever Sent In -- Because this book is special!.......2006-09-04
This is the most interesting book I have ever read (and I belong to 3 Book Clubs), so I read A LOT! I am admittedly a bird lover, but this book struck my heart. I have never written a review to Amazon, but this book is so special that I have to shout READ IT!!!! It will change your life. It blew me away. Amazing! Can't let it go....day after day, it reminds me of what life is all about. Saw Telegraph Hill. Doesn't compare. This is real. Heartrending. Intelligent. This book will keep you spellbound. A sure winner for book clubs, and anyone who wants to read a truly FABULOUS book.
There's something about these birds..........2005-12-20
I came across this book by complete chance- I didn't even know it existed until I found it staring me in the face from an endcap at the local bookstore. I was quite suprised that someone had written a book about raising house sparrows. I found my first house sparrow when I was 12 years old, and then raise 2 more that had been abandoned. My experience with the birds was strikingly similar to Mr. Chester's. He does a wonderful job in illustrating the fact that dogs and cats aren't the only animals that can be intelligent pets with personality. Most people seem to think that anyone who dotes upon a bird is a bit wierd, after all "it's only a bird." "Only", indeed.
Be aware that this book is a memoir, not a textbook. Mr. Chester does talk about himself. A lot. That's what people do in memoirs. But he certainly does include a wealth of information about sparrows in general, and his bird in particular. The reviewers who claim otherwise did not read the book (and admitted this themselves.) The book is about not just a bird and not just a man, but also the relationship between them and how this relationship made the man's life infinitely richer. "Providence of a Sparrow" shows that even "pests" and "junk birds" (as house sparrows are commonly called) have value. I hope that people who have never had a relationship with one of these birds enjoy the book as much as I did.

Product Description
The Complete Book of Chinese Medicine is the result of years of research and study by a world renowned Shaolin Grandmaster, Sifu Wong Kiew Kit, who has an excellent track record in curing many so-called "incurable diseases" like cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, sexual inadequacy, kidney failure, rheumatism and asthma using qiqong therapy. The aim of this exciting book is to introduce the wonderful and unique concept behind Chinese medicine. Sifu Wong's command of both the Chinese and English Language has made this book possible as meanings are often lost or misinterpreted during translation.

great introduction to chinese medicine.......2004-06-29
This book is a great way to get introduced to Chinese medicine. It's able to cover a lot of ground yet not being too vague or general. Usually books like this tend to be too techincal, but I found it surprisingly accessible. Definitely a great starting place if you want to learn about chinese medicine.

5th Generation Jewish Baker Says This Book is the Real Deal.......2006-12-09
My family has been in the baking business for at least 150 years, and I grew up in the sort of bakery that Greenstein describes. Our bakery produced all rye and pumpernickel breads, kaiser rolls, onion rolls, and other items, including the fabulous wonder cake much as Greenstein describes them in this book. If you are into more artisanal baking or have no interest in replicating authentic and age-old bread formulas, then this book is not for you. If, however, you yearn for the rye than you gnawed in your mother's arms, smelling the fermenting dough, and listening to the clank and craw of machines as they mixed and molding hundreds of thousands of loaves of rye, then this is book for you.
Greenstein offers home versions of many types of baked products, all formulated to be kneaded either by hand, cusinart, or stand-up mixer. I've tried many of the formulas and have made good rye and pumpernickel. I have a few issues, however. I use a wetter, 1:1 ratio of rye flour to water for my sour, as we did in our bakery. This makes for a wetter dough, one much easier to work by hand.
Also, my wife loves the Black and Whites from this book. What better endorsement can I offer?
To get the best results, I would order the proper white rye and clear flours from King Arthur. Also, if you bake the rye in a preheated covered pan like pryex, or a cast iron frying pan, you will get that professional crust. This allows you to skip the often infective tossing in of ice cubes.
Too Much Sugar & Commercial Yeast - Too Few "Secrets".......2006-09-03
.
Secrets? Vat Secrets?
It is really quite simple to make a loaf of bread. The greatest challenge for professional and striving artisan home bakers is to be able attain consistency; to factor in and accommodate specific needs of that day's dough, be they changes in ambient temperature, humidity, ripeness of poolish or biga or sourdough, and the tolerance of dough during fermentation.
I purchased this book with the expectation of finding baker's percentages, generous use of specialized pre-ferments, in addition to a heavy reliance on naturally leavened indirect methods. I also rightly expected professional "secrets" as the title implies.
Jeffrey Hamelman, author of BREAD remarked that he used to marvel at his ability to make acceptable loaves one day, and then wish he could hide his loaves the next. Secrets of a Jewish Baker is a book of practical, empirical, and intuitive information that uses packaged yeast (as many as three packages per recipe), volume measurements (cups and teaspoons), and will not contribute much to bakers aiming to expand their knowledge beyond today's flooded bread book market.
I should have known better than to fall for come-on titles like, "Secrets of a ......." yet I was still annoyed when his "secrets" such as the one for producing a rich mahogany-colored rye, is the addition of coffee, cocoa, or molasses. All of which impart their own alien flavors along with the color benefits they provide. In the case of selecting molasses for bread color, that ingredient also contributes considerable sweetness that is uncharacteristic of traditional sour rye.
Unlike Nancy Silverman's bread recipes using baked potatoes to great result, Greenstein's potato breads rely on boiled potatoes. Aside from the tendency of boiled potatoes to become gooey, they also contribute inconsistent quantities of hydration to the already vague formula: "a small or medium potato".
This 1993 title would have been far more conducive to my needs today if the author remained true to his original bakery formulas, provided actual "secrets" to his readers, and did not re-write his methodology to over simplify his recipes and production techniques for non-bakers.
The added sugar content in food (vegetables, breads, entrees) is often a regional and ethnic preference. I was born in Los Angeles and as such, I disfavor added sugar in my foods, particularly breads and vegetables. This book uses far more sugar and commercial leavening than is acceptable to my preference.
Overall, this book's content which also includes many quick loafs is very disappointing.
I bought this for Sourdough Rye recipe - which is fantastic!.......2006-02-05
I am a native New Yorker - who moved from Manhattan in 1999. I was back to NYC recently for a visit - and enjoyed some great NY rye bread. When I returned home - I did a internet search for a local bakery in my hood that could make such yummy rye. The search did not turn up any local bakers within walking distance - but did turn up this book! So I figured "What the heck - I will make it myself!".
I made the sourdough rye bread - and it is spot on. The book is excellent for a novice baker and provides such minutia as the proper way to 'fold' a standing pan loaf.
Great reading and great bread. Much thanks to the author for sharing his expertise with the world.
Still the best after 10 years.......2006-01-20
I bought this book over 10 years ago. I've been making bread at home for over 25 years, and have dozens of bread books. This volume is the one that I return to again and again. Every recipe comes out great, and the tips are invaluable. The New York-style specialty breads are the jewels of the collection in this book. My Brooklyn-native husband was floored when he tasted the rye bread made from the recipe in this book - he said that it tasted just like the rye from the local bakery on Brighton Beach. The challah recipe is terrific, as are the bagel and bialy recipes. After all, who can find real bialys outside of New York? The ones made from the book's recipe taste truly authentic. If I could only keep one bread book, this would be the one.
The next best thing to having a master baker in your kitchen.......2004-04-14
I've had this book for over 8 years and simply put, this is the one bread book all bakers should have in their homes.
There are other books on bread and they certainly have their places, but this is the one you'll come back to time and time again.
The well laid-out organization, the amazing variety of bread recipes, the fairly easy-to-follow recipes, and the short but insightful introduction & suggestions preceding each bread recipe all serve to make this a solid book for home baking.
But what puts this book above the rest are two things:
1). Each recipe is specifically tailored (retailored) to work well in the home kitchen.
2). The "baker's secret" tips added and highlighted in particular recipes make the difference between a good bread and an outstanding one.
Perhaps this isn't a perfect book (ring-bound and laminated, please) and for those who may care, it doesn't cover cakes and the like; however, the baker knows his craft intimately well and laid it all out.
The delicious results are a testament to that.

Grey Disappointment.......2001-09-07
This book is very hard to navigate due to its layout. The pictures get in the way of the natural flow of words. It is rather difficult to discern paragraph distinctions and there are a few typos. Some of the information in this book is suspect, and the author contradicts himself several times. I feel vastly disappointed with this book however, there are some fantastic photographs of the African Grey parrots.

Plus Ultra, this is Beyond Marbeling.......2006-10-10
An amazing book. I was familiar with the standard marbled papers you see in old (and new) books, but this book shows dozens of styles that I not only had never seen, but would not have even thought possible. Stunning works that are not at all typical "marbling." Gabriele Grunebaum's oil marbleing is really astonishing. The techniques are clearly demonstrated with photographs and diagrams. Buy this book!
Definitely the ultimate!.......2003-11-27
I was really interested i learning to do paper marbeling - had looked all around for kits to no avail so I went looking for books and came across this one. There are a number of different techniques in here: Sumonagashi, oil color, watercolor, marbeling fabric and other materials and then the last chapter is "a gallery of contemporary marbeling." For each of the technique chapters it tells you the materials you need with pictures of them in case the words/descriptions aer not enough and then that's followed by a section on "basic techniques" that are specific to that technique. The writing is clear and straight forward and there are lots of good pictures to help. Following the basic instructions there are advanced instructions. Again, with good pictures and ideas. The end of the book has fabric as well as the gallery -I'm still a beginner so I haven't played around with fabric and the things in the gallery are pretty advanced but they sure are inspirational. For now I'll have fun with paper. Great book though - it has something for the beginner as well as the more advanced artist!
The Piesta Resistance.......2002-06-18
This book has very detailed how-to information and a smorgasbord of effects. It is a beginners and an advanced book all in one. A Good buy!
200 color images of marbeling designs are inspiring........2000-10-04
Marbling of fabric and paper has intrigued artesans for centuries. The Ultimate Marbling Handbook explores the art of marbling, materials used, techniques and beautiful images of marbled color captured on paper, fabric and other materials. The colors are vivid, designs are unique and imanigative. Marble patterns fascinate, from the random stone or rock, to the colors combed into repeating patterns, no two the same.
Advanced designs of many artists are shared and techniques are explained. Diane Maurer-Mathison is a gifted artist and has authored a beautiful book suitable for the beginning to experienced marble artist.
detailed and clear instructions.......2000-06-29
I have done Suminagashi marbling for years and have been tempted to move into other types of marbling but have been unable to find good detailed information on material and techniques.
Diane Maurer-Mathison is an old hand at marbling and she shares all her wisdom here. She starts with the easiest marbling techniques and moves into patterns that would challenge a master.
Not only does she tell you where to buy the tools you need she includes detailed instructions on how to make your own tools and grind your own pigments.
She even tells you how to marble fabric, your sneakers, wood, and anything else that will stand still.
And the colored illustrations are breathtaking! I opened the book in front of a friend and her daughters. We oohhed and aahhed over it for a good twenty minutes. It is truely inspiring.
Someone put a lot of time and effort into making this a clear and easy to use guide. I reccomend it highly.

very good, entertaining.......2006-06-01
I'd love to raise my daughter free of gender bias, but we live in a world that has it.
This book addresses the physical realities of raising a baby daughter (hygiene, growth rates) and societal ones (no matter how hard you try to avoid it, "girl" clothes often come in pink).
It's got common sense advice on food, nurturing, and setting limits--and the language is warm, even friendly, without being "cute." A very good book.

b /b b i The Japanese and the Jesuits /i /b examines the attempt by sixteenth-century Jesuits to convert Japan to Christianity. Directing the Jesuits was the Italian Alessandro Valignano, whose own magisterial writings, many of them not previously translated or published, are the principal source material for this account of one of the most remarkable of all meetings between East and West. br br Valignano arrived in Japan in 1579. In promoting Christianity, he always sought the support of the ruling classes. He taught the missionaries to adapt themselves thoroughly to Japanese customs, etiquette, and culture, and insisted that they master the Japanese language. He brought a European printing press to Japan, turning out grammars and dictionaries of Japanese for the missionaries, as well as works of instruction and devotion for the Japanese Christians. br br Following Valignano's death, Christianity was proscribed and missionaries banished from Japan. This does not detract from his remarkable achievements, however. He understood perfectly well that foreign missionaries by themselves were not capable of converting Japan to Christianity. One of his principal concerns was the training of Japanese Jesuits and priests, and breaking down the barriers between them and the Europeans. Few people have been more acutely aware of the tensions or grappled more determinedly with the problems in Japanese-Western relationships than Valignano.
