Book Description

Minus one eye, and a promising military career in ruin after being brutally assaulted by my elder brother, I strayed to the verge of insanity. Fearing a bloody reprisal would tarnish my father's reputable business name, I was conveniently exiled from the family home in England out of the way, to a life of self-reliance in Africa. Without friends or relatives at the end of the line, trade papers or a job, and little money, the future looked bleak. After thirteen adventurous years steeped in mystery, suspense, and a peppering of steamy sexual encounters, failing eyesight forced me back to England. Believing I'd returned to even the score with my brother, several family members embarked upon a damning witch-hunt to destroy me before it could happen. But after five miserable years of hell on earth, trapped beneath a persecuting shadow of prolonged rejection and emotional torture, I emerged from a cocoon of mental madness to become their worst ever nightmare.

1 out of 5 stars Manuscript rather than a Book.......2006-02-24

This has to be the worst 'book' I have ever read. It has a very splintered story line and written in an almost child like format. The spelling/grammar/punctuation is questionable. This book being printed through Publish Britannica (Publish America) is nothing more than a printed story rather than a published book.

5 out of 5 stars Misrepresented sale of this book.......2005-12-01

Frank Carver, the author of this book, is a close friend of mine. I was one of the editors of this particular manuscript here in the states. Publish America misrepresented their publishing policy to Frank. He took out a patent on this work in England, where he resides. Now, Publish America is selling HIS book and he is not getting ANY royalties.

I believe people should check the validity of their sales before advertising.

His CURRENT, RECENT rewrite of the book with this title is EXCEPTIONAL!

John Naughton, to judge by this learned but lightly written history of modern communications technology, is deeply interested in just about everything. It mystifies the Irish-born Cambridge University scholar that so few people share his fascination with the Internet--and, he grumps, "the higher you go up the social and political hierarchy the worse it gets."

A Brief History of the Future, whose title is just right, is Naughton's attempt to educate the uninitiated in how the Internet came to be. Although its development occurred in starts and stops over a half-century, the Internet came into its own only in the 1990s, with the arrival of the World Wide Web and widely available software to negotiate it. Each of those innovations, though, drew on work that sometimes extends deep into the past, and Naughton does a good job of tracing technical lineages. Though studded with geekspeak, his narrative doesn't presuppose much background knowledge on his readers' part, unlike Stephen Segaller's worthy Nerds 2.0.1., which covers some of the same ground. Naughton's cast of characters includes such scientific and administrative luminaries as Norbert Wiener, Vannevar Bush, Paul Baran, Bill Gates, Linus Torvalds, and Tim Berners-Lee (but, sad to say, not Al Gore), each of whom made contributions large and small to what Naughton insists is a technological revolution with endless possibilities for the common good.

Well-written and richly detailed, Naughton's book is a fine introduction to the Net, and to the countless, largely unsung innovators who made it possible. --Gregory McNamee

Book Description

"There is genuine passion in his writing about technology, and readers leave knowing the deep respect Naughton . . . has for the people who created the thing he loves." (Boston Globe)

"If knowledge is power, this book is an essential read for anyone who wants to be an active player in the 21st century." (Washington Times)

The Internet is one of the most remarkable and far-reaching achievements of mankind. Yet even as the Net pervades our lives, we begin to take it for granted. Most of us have no idea where the Internet came from, how it works, or what it means for society and the future; John Naughton has the answers.

A Brief History of the Future is a passionate book whose heroes are the visionaries who laid the foundations of the postmodern world; it celebrates the engineers and scientists who implemented their dreams in hardware and software, and explains the values and ideas that drove them. It is also a highly personal account: John Naughton writes about the Net as a part of life, and as a key influence on his own voyage from solitary child to established academic and writer. Above all, A Brief History of the Future is the story of vision and determination, and of the power of ideas to transform the world.

5 out of 5 stars I wish high school history had been like this.......2002-04-21

Next time you take a transcontinental flight to a technical conference, skip the airline movie and just read this wonderful book cover to cover. I wish history class in high school had been this much fun. Naughton has written the definitive history of the Internet so far. For example, when the Pentagon asked AT&T to build an early prototype of the Internet for them, AT&T pooh-poohed packet switching as a worthless idea concocted by some young whippersnapper (Paul Baran of the Rand Corp.) who knew nothing about proper telephone engineering. The book is full of anecdotes and funny stories. Great reading for old fogies and young fogies alike.

5 out of 5 stars The entire history of the Internet's development.......2001-02-13

What does the Internet mean for the future? An answer partially depends upon an analysis of the past, and John Naughton's Brief History of the Future is the first book to cover the entire history of the Internet's development, from those who first thought of it in the 1940s to the scientists and engineers who brought it to life. Anecdotes blend with history to provide an intriguing blend of personal and scientific observation.

5 out of 5 stars Great book - reads like a novel!.......2000-12-06

Reads like a sci-fi novel while providing a solid understanding of how and why the Internet works. At times the detail is almost overdone but this only adds to the credibility of the author. I started with a Timex Sinclair computer and have lived through the period covered in this book without really understanding just what made the internet work. Now I know!

5 out of 5 stars For friends who don't understand your job........2000-10-21

I've worked in the software industry for twenty years, and now I finally have an entertaining, enjoyable book to give to friends and family who don't really understand what I do all day. If you've ever struggled to explain how the internet works, or why anybody would use it. This is the book. I gave a copy to my 77 year old flight instructor, he loved it.

5 out of 5 stars The Stories and People of the internet You've Forgotten!.......2000-10-10

I loved this book because, while semi-technical, it is mostly about events and people that brought us the internet revolution. It took many "small bricks" to build the internet we know today, and hundreds of unsung hero's are revealed. Although I was not intimately involved in this revolution, it has touched my life over and over again, and now, at 70 years, I feel I am a part of it! I especially love the beginning of the authors personal story, which perfectly parallels my life and makes a marvelous connection between short-wave listening, ham radio, and the advent of the internet! The author is very clear in stating where there are "differing stories" about some of the events, which speaks well of his research in preparation for writing the book. This is a book for those that lived through the "beginning" of the future, and for those young people are pushing the future forward in the new millennium!

    2 out of 5 stars You're kidding me right?.......2006-08-15

This guy is the "hottest trainer" on the scene right now? Give me a break. Aside from a little definition in his chest and abs, he looks like he's never set foot in a gym, at least a real one! He has no development in his back, shoulders, legs or arms, and no wonder: There's hardly any real weight training routines anywhere to be found in this book.

Ok, it's not all bad. The nutritional advice is fairly sound, and the book does give you some creative ways to exercise without any expensive equipment or a gym, but let's get real. For the average person to really accomplish a serious body makeover, it takes real training with real weights, and real routines from someone who actually trains.

Not a terrible book, it's just that there any so many others that are much better.

    5 out of 5 stars Energetic.......2006-06-28

Derek Noble keeps it simple with easy reading and easy exercises for the fitness newcomer, as well as the fitness guru. Derek's program covers everything from fitness and stretching to nutrition and the book is a great reference guide for his fitness program. The book even includes exercises for the couch potato and exercises to do while doing housework. And Derek says that you don't need expensive equipment or gym memberships to become fit. If you don't have a lot of time and you want to look and feel good, then this book is definitely for you!

    3 out of 5 stars Practical everywhere!.......2006-04-02

Talk about finding opportunities anywhere! Derek is the type who would show you that travelling or working long hours aren't excuses for not working out.I first heard about Derek on t.v, and when I purchased his book, I was really impressed by his resourcefulness, something thats really lacking in many publications out here.
One of my clients borrowed my book, and she ended up being inspired to buy a ball for her office!-now she wants me to train her at her office. Can I complain?!

Derek addresses body intelligence, something that I think is really important to anybody whose exercising, and with this awareness....you could turn your body and any location into your fitness gym. Thanks for the inspiration Derek!

    5 out of 5 stars very educational.......2006-03-12

Derek keeps it simple. He doesn't overload an inexperienced(me)person with too much information. I have been working out regularly with his show Urban Fitness on Fit TV since I bought the book. What I like best about the book is I can use it as a reference guide and the pictures help very much. It's easy reading for a newcomber. I am 40 and never worked out before and his book showed me that I can do it right in my living room. I am seeing progress! I also like the resource list in the back of the book. A must read!!

4 out of 5 stars Fit though busy, through a lifestyle plan that works!.......2006-03-12

Derek Noble is star of the show URBAN FITNESS TV and imparts the foundations of his popular Hollywood exercise fitness routines here in THE BODY NOBLE: 20 MINUTES TO A HOT BODY WITH HOLLYWOOD'S COOLEST TRAINER. His is a simple, quick method for obtaining a fit body for even the busiest exercises, providing a 'lifestyle plan' which blends all components of fitness - muscle toning, stretching and cardio - in a series of routines which add visualization techniques to help boost effectiveness. Book Description

Among Thomas Jefferson's flaws, according to Patrick Henry, was the manner in which "he has abjured his native victuals in favor of French cuisine." While Jefferson's years in Paris enhanced his fondness for French food, the offerings at Monticello incorporated Continental cuisine with more common Virginian fare, yielding a celebrated blend of cultures and traditions.

Dining at Monticello: In Good Taste and Abundance combines recipes, background essays, and lush illustrations to provide an inviting view of the renowned hospitality offered at Thomas Jefferson's table. Ten introductory essays by Monticello scholars and by outside experts illuminate all areas of food and drink at Jefferson's home, ranging from the groceries and wine imported from Europe, to the recently revealed kitchen restoration, to the African Americans who participated in this rich food culture at every stage. Following these essays are seventy-five recipes found in the family manuscripts, some written in Jefferson's own hand. Updated by Damon Lee Fowler, author of Classical Southern Cooking, the recipes are authentic to the period yet accessible to the home cook. Filled with anecdotes, recipes, solid information, and beautiful color photography, this book satisfies both hunger and curiosity.

3 out of 5 stars Great at what it does.......2006-01-19

If you want to learn the actual construction methods for Celtic knotwork, this is a good place to start. Much more thorough than some, and you get theory and methods that can be applied to anything, rather than a "here's how to draw this pattern, and by the way, it's copyrighted so you can't use anything like this in your own art" of one or two books about Celtic design by other authors.
I take a hint and make a design work on the fly, so the actual construction details are lost on me. Don't need the alphabets for the art I do. Love the pages of finished spirals.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent book for those interested in Celtic Designs........2001-03-30

This is an excellent book for those looking to create celtic designs.

This book teaches you step and key patters, spirials, uncial script and how to layout manuscript pages.

The book is best used when accompianied by Aidan's other Celtic Design books. I have 7 of the books in this series and love them all!

All in all this is a great book for someone looking to create celtic designs.

        4 out of 5 stars A good start.......2000-09-22

Actually this book provides enough information to make the first steps into celtic design. I think it is the best book for beginners, but there lies the problem. Every time you try out something, you will soon reach a point where you need additional information to proceed. So for beginners it is an excellent entry into the matter, but nothing more.

4 out of 5 stars A great introduction to Celtic design.......1998-01-05

Covers the basic how-to of Celtic design, including step patterns, key patterns, spirals, uncial script calligraphy, and decorative letters. For more detailed information, see Meehan's other titles in the Celtic Design series. Includes plenty (258) of very well done black and white illustrations demonstrating the techniques described in the text.

This edition of Aidan Meehan's practical guides to the art and design of the Celts brings together three of his bestselling titles in the Celtic Design series: A Beginner's Manual, Knotwork, and Illuminated Letters. The step-by-step instructions provide an invaluable resource for artists, designers, and craftspeople.

          • A Beginner's Manual covers all the simplest forms of Celtic design with a clear explanation of both freehand and canonical geometric methods, as well as detailed instructions on how to draw and decorate letters in an authentic Celtic style. This book offers more than the usual information about individual roses. There are seven garden designs which are invaluable as guidelines for both experienced and novice rose gardeners. The information is very detailed about the habits and disease resistance of each of the roses listed, and the author goes one step further to suggest landscape uses for each cultivar and attractive companion plants. Probably the best rose book to come along in this decade!

In I Swore I'd NEVER Do That, Elizabeth Fishel helps us define the "ghosts in the nursery"--the echoes of our own pasts that affect our own parenting. These ghosts take us over and mimic the voices and words of our parents we hear coming out of our mouths when we're upset. Fishel helps readers identify the "cycles of pain" we fall into--the repeating hurts that happen generation after generation. And she identifies four distinct parenting styles: Traditionalists, Rebels, Compensators, and Synthesizers. This book is appropriate and informative for all parents.

                    Book Description

Herbert Zincke was stationed at Clark Field in the Philippines when Japanese aircraft struck there only ten hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor. His unit had retreated to the island of Mindanao when all American and Filipino soldiers in the Philippines were ordered by their commanders to surrender. Zincke was shipped to Camp No. 2 on Tokyo Bay, where he was a slave laborer until the end of the war. Soon after their arrival at the Kawasaki labor camp, Zincke and his fellow prisoners began to call their barracks, which were owned by the Mitsui Corporation, the Mitsui Madhouse for the brutal treatment meted out by the Japanese guards.

During three years at the camp, Zincke faced three life-threatening scenarios. He might survive the malnutrition, disease, and guard brutality, only to be executed with the other POWs if American forces landed in Japan. Ironically, he also faced a threat from American bombers, which endangered Camp No. 2 because it was located in the midst of a heavy industrial area. (Bombs did eventually destroy it.)

This work tells the story of Zincke's survival and is drawn from the secret diary he managed to keep out of his Japanese captors' hands. Zincke recollects a terrifying blow from the Japanese camp commander's samurai sword, the diet of rice and thin soup that resulted in drastic weight loss and an inability to do the required factory work, the POW British doctor who attended the prisoners and was frequently beaten because of his constant efforts to keep the sick men from going to work, and many of the other terrible conditions and experiences he endured during three years of imprisonment.
