Book Description
This book covers the eventful years from 1938 to 1946 from the prelude to war to World War II itself. It is the story of this all-Canadian show , the Canadian Army Show (CAS) that forms the bulk of the author's story as she explains its origins and brings its creators into the spotlight. She describes the shows they took to the front, tells of close calls for the units as they entertained Canada's troops in Italy and France, recounts her personal sorrow at the loss of her RAF fiance', and then concludes with the remarkable story of CAS's last show overseas when, at war's end, 200 dancers, singers, actors and riders performed in the extravaganza, Rhythm Rodeo, entertaining more than 40,000 of Canada's soldiers waiting for transport home.
This is a great story and one that needed to be told by someone who was on the inside, who was there when show biz practicalities clashed with army discipline, who witnessed the pain and hard work and laughter that was behind the exceptional success of this company, who can at last give these soldier/performers their historical due.
Book Description
James Lovelock tells the fascinating story of his life as an independent scientist and how he came to develop his inventions and theories. He has filed more than 50 patents, including one for the electron capture detector that was important in the development of environmental awareness, in connection with both the detection of pesticide residues in the environment and the discovery of the global distribution of CFCs. He also tells us about the work he has done for organizations such as NASA, the Ministry of Defence, The Marine Biological Association, and many companies such as Shell and Hewlett Packard. From his childhood days in east London to a job as a lab assistant - his first crucial steps to becoming a scientist, from chemistry at Manchester University to the Medical Research Council during World War II, his voyage to the Arctic, taking his family to America, returning to England and fighting to save the ozone layer, his quest for gaia, then into the nineties and a stream of awards, including a CBE from the Queen. James Lovelock has led a fulfilling life and has been widely recognized by the international scientific community.

His autobiography, written at age 80. 4.3 stars.......2006-01-21
______________________________________________
This is his autobiography, written at age 80. Lovelock is best-known for formulating the Gaia hypothesis, that the Earth is, metaphorically, a global superorganism: life regulates its environment to be more favorable for life, by the familiar and everyday process of natural selection. For example, a higher CO2 level in the atmosphere will result in more luxuriant plant growth, which will lower the CO2 content [1].
Lovelock, who has a Ph.D in medicine, had a long career as a working scientist and inventor. He invented the exquisitely-sensitive electron-capture detector, and used it to pioneer measuurements of fluorocarbons in the atmosphere, work which led to the banning of Freon as a hazard to the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere.
Lovelock is appropriately skeptical about the rhetorical excesses in the "Ozone Wars", and deplores the continued misuse of science in environmemtalism-as-religion. He's well-aware of the misuse of his Gaia "earth-mother" metaphor by muddle-headed New Agers, but gave numerous lectures to religious groups at the time the Gaia hypothesis was struggling for scientific respectability, which couldn't have helped his case. Lovelock himself is an agnostic, a fiercely-independent iconoclast, and an old-fashioned, very British eccentric scholar.
Lovelock spent most of his career as an independent scientist and consultant, a difficult path for a research scientist but one which suited his personality -- and his desire to live and work in a rural setting. He's an interesting man and an influential scientist. His memoir is somewhat repetitive and overlong, and he sometimes sounds like a querulous old fart -- but if you have admired Lovelock's scientific work, you will enjoy reading about his life.
Lovelock himself is a science-fiction fan -- as was William Golding, a neighbor who named the Gaia hypothesis. Lovelock co-wrote one science-fiction (sort-of) novel, _The Greening of Mars_ -- and his critics gleefully (and unfairly) labelled his Gaia work as science-fantasy. His work has held up pretty well, and his ideas are becoming mainstream in the earth and life-sciences -- though many of his successors avoid the "tainted" Gaia label.
Lovelock's memoir has an interesting account of his progress from an unquestioning young Socialist in the 1930's to an admirer of Lady Thatcher. His uncritical admiration for the British National Health Service continues, even after a disastrous operation that permanently damaged his urethra, apparently due to a 'labour action' by the union at his hospital. Oddly enough.
Lovelock is currently campaigning for nuclear power, as a way out of global-warming. His book has kind words for the industries he's worked in, especially Shell Oil. My kind of Green.

A life for Gaia theory.......2005-11-14
At once an autobiography and the biography of Gaia Theory. The concept that has defined the life of the author is that the world is a complex living organism, this means that the life story of this very interesting and brilliant man shares also the development of his controversial theory. Written in a very human and honest style, with only general scientific information which makes the book perfect for all readers.
Science is about creating yourself.......2003-09-04
This book is a brilliant illustration of George Bernard Shaw's philosophy: "Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself." As a professional scientist struggling to reconcile the freedom of thought required to produce truly innovative research and the constraints of institutional science, I found this book very stimulating. Lovelock's depiction of a bright, adventurous, and independent scientific path will be a wonderful inspiration to all vocational scientists.
The Life of an Independent Scientist.......2003-08-18
This is a remarkable book by and about a remarkable man. Big science is now the norm so that few working scientists manage to survive on their own. But Jim Lovelock not only survived but was responsible for a number of outstanding scientific achievements.
I met Jim when he was a consultant to Caltech's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in the 1970's. I was a physicist with an intense interest in all things biological, and in charge of the scientists and engineers devising instruments to try to detect life on Mars. Jim immediately impressed me with his quiet manner and understanding of the problems. A year later, I visited his laboratory in his cottage at Bowerchalke, near Salisbury, England and met his first wife, Helen.
This book is autobiographical, discussing in depth his early life and how he gradually became so well regarded in the scientific community that he was sought after as a consultant around the world. I can hear Jim's voice in this book. Peter Simmonds, who worked with Jim in Britain and at JPL once said, "Jim carries a little bird on his shoulder who tells him exactly what to say." It seemed like that when he was able to make a pungent comment clearing up a difficulty that had plagued us for days.
This is a remarkable book as it tells with great clarity what Jim thought of many of the people he worked with. The names include many of the great scientists working on the environment and other problems of the age. He's kind in his assessment of some of them, I think.
Read this book if you want to understand what makes a great scientist: ability, knowledge, study, intuition and imagination. Read it as a gripping story of one man's life as an independent scientist. Read it, also, to learn how much Jim contributed to our understanding of the world's environment as we know it today.

"Attachment to and dependency on parents... is a normal, healthy aspect of childhood and not something that needs to be discouraged." This quote from Attachment Parenting: Instinctive Care for Your Baby and Young Child sums up the attitude behind the growing shift in many Western cultures toward a labor-intensive but arguably more rewarding, effective, and "natural" way to raise children. This philosophy, termed "Attachment Parenting" by its champion, pediatrician and father of eight Dr. William Sears (author of the popular child-care manual The Baby Book, among others), sees infants not as manipulative adversaries who must be "trained" to eat, sleep, and play when told, but as dependent yet autonomous human beings whose wants and needs are intelligible to the parent willing to listen, and who deserve to be responded to in a reasonable and sensitive manner. As with Sears's books, there are no plans or schedules here, no specific prescriptions for what to do with your child. Techniques to facilitate connection and communication are outlined, but mostly the book is an exhortation to listen and to trust yourself, and to trust your child's ability to convey to you what he or she needs.
Information is provided in a well-organized format that parents will find useful. Common questions regarding some of Attachment Parenting's less orthodox tenets are answered, and each section of the book provides lengthy reading and resource lists, Web sites, and e-mail addresses. This book also provides a fairly broad discussion of how working parents can incorporate such a "high-touch" style of care into their busy schedules. The authors are sometimes painfully straightforward about the cost-benefit analysis parents must go through when deciding to work outside the home, but they do not patronize working parents by glossing over this difficult decision. They show how Attachment Parenting can be especially beneficial to these families and give advice on choosing child care, breastfeeding after returning to work, and the techniques for creating a breastfeeding-friendly workplace.
Given the overwhelming cultural paradigms that parents must resist if they are going to adopt this compassionate methodology, the book's sometimes defensive tone can be at least partially excused. As a whole, parents will find this a good overview of some compelling arguments for Attachment Parenting and a wonderful resource for delving deeper into the issues it addresses. How much of it they choose to integrate into their lives is, as the book emphasizes, their decision to make, with their baby. --Katherine Ferguson
Book Description
Grow a secure attachment with your children by listening to your heart
Popularized by bestselling pediatrician Dr. William Sears, "attachment parenting" encourages mothers and fathers to fully accept their babies' dependency needs. According to the growing numbers of attachment parenting advocates, consistent parental responsiveness to these needs leads to happy and emotionally well-balanced children.
This practical, comprehensive, and first-ever guide to today's most talked-about nurturing style, Attachment Parenting shows how some conventional childrearing advice can be detrimental, and urges you to trust your instincts on such important matters as:
- Responding attentively to your baby's cries
- Minimizing parent-child separation
- Avoiding "sleep training" for infants
- Breastfeeding according to your baby's cues instead of a schedule
- "Wearing" your baby in a cloth carrier rather than relying on "baby gadgets" such as plastic carriers and carriages.
In addition to expert advice from pediatricians, lactation consultants, and anthropologists -- as well as words of wisdom from hundreds of real parents -- Attachment Parenting includes an exhaustive list of print, Internet, and support-group resources. It's an indispensable, hands-on reference that allows you to confidently and joyfully develop a secure and loving bond with your young children.

This book would greatly improve..........2007-08-21
if the author would simply state that there is no reason to have a newborn circumcised instead of all this feel-goody mumbo about "well if you decide to have it done..." Infant circumcision is wrong. Amputating normal and healthy tissue from a newborn baby is just plain wrong.
does not fit an older parent.......2007-07-08
Well I must say this book is written by a very narrow minded MAN.
I am an older mom (52)- I cannot breastfeed or wear the twins in a sling ( for fear of breaking my back). We need rules to come from us the adults- not what the babies want. There is a bedtime as well as mealtimes. We keep a schedule and use bottles. The twins are thriving- 8 months old now.
These babies are attached to us and we use a live in caregiver too.
Intolerant tone turned me off.......2007-05-01
I was really interested in attachment parenting, which is why I picked up this book. But even as someone with a really open mind, I came away feeling brow beaten and my child isn't even born yet! I mean, am I really such a bad parent if I don't planning on nursing my son till age five?
I agree with previous reviewers that the authors frequently refer to Dr. Sears's books and you should do the same. Dr. Sears is much more balanced and gentle. 'The Baby Book' is thorough and well worth the money.
The only reason to get this book is the great list of resources (links to stores, interest groups and forums) at the end of each chapter.
Don't trust instincts.......2007-04-07
As my sister said to me on the phone recently.. "You have always had good instincts and I haven't. I've always had to resort to the books" She was speaking on the difficulties that she has had in arriving at her parenting style. She used many books on attachment parenting to define her style in the early days. She has since abandoned these methods and recognizes them, as I do, for what they are... hocum.
Some people have instincts about parenting and some don't. I feel bad for those, like my sister, who ended up believing that this was good advice. Advice from a parent of twins plus one. cosleeping is great, carrying the baby is great, breastfeeding is even greater, but letting the baby rule your life is simply silly. They're a baby and your an adult. At or just before six months they need to be taught that night is for sleep and day is for more wakeful stuff. If you get the lesson in early enough there will be very very little crying. If you wait because you are uncomfortable with hearing them cry you will be back to amazon to buy more and more "sleeping advice" books. My children learned early to put themselves to sleep and now, they go right to sleep when there heads hit the pillow... whether the pillow is mine or theirs. Going to bed is a happy time for them and they certainly don't remember the maybe 10 nights when they were 4 months old that they cried before they fell asleep. Good luck all you newbies. It is a wonderful crazy ride!
I am an attachment parent.......2006-09-20
First off, I know this will scare some people off my "review" but, I haven't yet read this book. I did read all the other reviews and I'd like to comment on attachment parenting as someone who has done it twice. We co- sleep, which is not dangerous as some other reviewers ( who've never done it) stated. Research shows that it prevents SIDS because your baby is reminded to breath by your breathing and if your baby were to have a problem you would know immediately. I know first hand this is true! And people do not co-sleep because they are too poor to afford another room as one idiot commented in a previous review. Come on now, how stupid! I do breastfeed, my children have never had a bottle and have no idea what formula is. But I do, it contains many things that are bad for babies as well as tating HORRIBLE!Read the label, look up the ingredients on te internet and taste it. Then decide if its good for your baby. Formula was made for a baby who was dying and couldnt nurse due to a birth defect, not for healthy babies! It was a last resort! Why are all these babies being given formula? A mothers milk is made specifically for your baby every day according to their needs at the moment. Its not just the perfect food. It allows babies the physical closenes thats so crucial in the early days months and even years. Self weaning does not mean they will nurse forever. Most stop by age 2. And the American board of pediatrics says that this is an ideal age! Other reviews have said that its inconvenient for them to parent this way. While I understand that, you are a parent. If you didnt want to parent you shouldnt have had kids. Why have a child if you are going to leave them in daycare all day eating formula and then bring them home and ignore them until its time to put them on the other side of the house in a baby cage? Just stay single and selfish and dont involve children it that! My children are not whiney and uncontrolable as other reviewers have stated all attachment children are. They are MORE social and indipendant because having their needs met has given them self confidence and trust! I will say though, that parenting is something that should be done naturally. Follow your instincts. You don't need to follow anyone elses phylosophy and you certainly dont need to agree with EVERYTHING anyone says. Do you believe co sleeping, breastfeeding, baby wearing is right? Do you think it's best for your baby? Then do it! If not, do what works for you. But don't let somebody elses "extremist" attitude on either side, make your decisions for you! That's why YOU are the parent!

Great cooking the way it used to be........1999-01-29
OK, so all of us have steered ourselves away from fried foods & towards poached chicken breasts (skinless, of course) and steamed vegetables. How about just a little taste of good eating from the past? No one is recommending a return to deep-fried foods as an everyday meal, but the taste treats in this book are just too good to ignore!
Rodgers' chatty writing style and well-tested recipes combine to provide accurate and easy-to-follow instructions. Since working with a deep fryer is something that many us have not done in years (if EVER!), he provides detailed background info on the types of equipment available, different varieties of oil & shortenings, and many good tips to avoid excess greasiness and off-tastes in cooked foods. Appetizers, entrees, and desserts are all covered, with great photos of completed items.
Some of the recipes are incredibly simple, such as the Cornish game hens (hens, oil, lemon, salt, pepper) and can be prepared in under 15 minutes. Others are a little more involved, but well worth it (the apple fritters, with just a light dusting of powdered sugar, are fantastic). There's even a foolproof recipe for doughnuts with a cider glaze--great for weekend mornings!
I have to say it again--I'm not going to be cooking deep fried foods every day, but when I want to prepare something just a little bit special, this is a book that I will turn to time after time.

New to Tapestry.......2007-03-27
I felt this was a very comprehensive guide to the "want to be". It answered many questions I had before I decided to begin.
Great Book!.......2007-03-16
Beautiful book and so filled with info. I want to use it with my Navajo loom.
Truly Comprehensive!.......2003-10-24
I have read most of the tapestry-weaving books in print or in my local university library and this is the one I turn to when I have a question. Nancy Harvey does a fantastic job of teaching the art and method of tapestry weaving from construction of a basic frame loom, to cartoon design, to finishing techniques. The book has good B&W illustrations and photos of the lessons, although larger photos would have been helpful-more like the wonderful color close-ups in Kristen Glassbrook's tapestry book. There are several teaching designs included in the book that are a pleasure to weave. Harvey's lesson on how to weave a circle is priceless as I have not seen that technique so well covered in any other book. The color photos included in the gallery illustrate a wide variety of weaving styles and are inspiring. I would especially recommend this book for intermediate weavers who are ready to progress beyond the lessons in Kristen Glassbrook's excellent book.
