A chilling account.......2004-05-16
Readers of Russian politics and world peace will find Biowarrior: Inside the Soviet/Russian Biological War Machine to be an intriguing insider's look at the Soviet biological war machine, written by a leading Russian scientist who worked for decades at the heart of the program. Igor Domaradskij was a dedicated scientist who was often in conflict with military approaches: he became a specialist in epidemic bacterial infections, and was responsible for plague control within the former USSR, and also helped design the Soviet military's bio-weapons program. A chilling account, Biowarrior is a welcome and informative addition to the growing body of Cold War Era information that has come to light since the downfall of the old communist empire.
Pass on this one.......2004-01-06
This book was not what I expected. The author spends much valuable time describing his personal trials and tribulations with the Russian "system" rather than explaining the what, how, where, and gory details of biological warfare. If you are looking for an exciting read, pass on this one...I did read the whole thing and I can guarantee it will put you to sleep every time you pick it up!

Sophisticated.......2007-08-23
This is not for the amateur. The text and the recipes are exceptional and appealing to those accustomed to quality and superb baking. But, when going to Seattle, ah, a must !
SIMPLE and DELICIOUS.......2007-05-07
I bought the first copy as a gift. I have not purchased a new cookbook for myself in years, as I have dozens and dozens. I did not think there was anything new under the sun for me in the world of cookbooks - WRONG!
I have enjoyed the Macrina bakery since it opened, and Leslie's cookbook faithfully includes all the best of her breads, sweets, and savories.
The recipes are soooooooooo straightforward, simple, yet are unique combinations of everyday ingredients. So, I purchased two more - yep, one for me and one more gift.

Customer Reviews:
love this cookbook.......2006-05-29
i love macrina bakery and i love this cookbook. even when i'm not baking from it i love to just read through it (which i've done countless times). The rocket muffins are delicious and the pie dough recipe is the best and easiest i've come across.
one of my favorites.......2006-01-15
I'm a cook who tries to avoid baking whenever possible, but I got this book as a gift and it has really turned me on to baking artisan breads - my favorites are the olive loaf, potato bread, and the pizza dough. It's so worth it when you have the time! Also, the lavender-lemon scones are phenomenal, and fast and easy. We've used the pie dough recipe not only for desert pies but for chicken pot pies. I've tried about a third of the recipes in the book, and everything has been delicious.
My husband has cooked from the savory section of the book - the moroccan chicken tagine is one of his favorites - it's a great one-pot meal - as is the fried egg sandwich. Both are a bit of a process and he isn't super experienced in the kitchen, but he has no trouble following the recipes. The result is amazing.
Attention to details yeilds amazing results!.......2005-09-12
The Macrina Bakery is one of the best places to go for sweet or savory treats. This book shows why: these folks work hard!
If you follow this book like a chemistry text, you should be able to whip up some incredible pastries. Even the simplest recipe is described with careful attention to detail. Don't expect shortcuts or quicktips--be prepared for some hard work. The results are worth it.
On the other hand, if you live in Seattle, you could always just let the folks at Macrina do the work for you.
Breads, pastries, sweets and savories.......2004-01-12
Leslie Mackie opened the Macrina Bakery & Cafe in 1993, specializing in hearth-baked artisan loaves and rustic European pastries. An expert baker, Leslie Mackie's recipes have been featured in Bon Appetit, Sunset Magazine, and The New York Times. Now, with the assistance of Andrew Cleary, Leslie Mackie has drawn upon her expertise to compiled the Macrina Bakery & Cafe Cookbook showcasing her favorite breads, pastries, sweets and savories. From Guatemalan Hot Chocolate Bread; Raspberry Cinnamon-Sugar Bread Pudding with Nectarine Compote; Chocolate Cherry Pound Cake; and Lemon Chess Tart; to Sour Cherry Shortbread; Gingerbread Crepes with Citron Ricotta, Cranberry Compote & Vanilla Syrup; Tuscan Tomato & Fennel Soup with White Beans; and Steamed Chocolate Pudding Cake, Macrina Bakery & Cafe Cookbook is a gourmet's delight and very highly recommended for personal, professional, and community library cookbook collections.
Great bread recipes.......2003-11-23
The porcini mushroom loaf is just the bread for a melted fontina sandwich. Recipes were clear, user-friendly and delicious. Not sure I would do the breakfast bread pudding again (with sausage, cranberries and goat cheese), but there are many other wonderful recipes to try. Best of all, visit Macrina in Seattle and eat for yourself! I used to stop in on the way to work or on the way home for bread; it is always a treat.

Breeding Rottweilers.......2001-12-11
I did not find that this book had any more info. about breeding than any other rottweiler book. This book didn't give dimentions of welping box (and it's about breeding) yet two other books I own give them and there a reg. rottie book. I plan on selling this book on e-bay because I didn't find it that useful. If you know nothing and have no other books you would enjoy the info. which is why I rated it a 3. Thanks.
This book only touches the bare basics of breeding!.......1998-07-21
I was excited to receive this book and after reading it was disappointed! It has far too many pictures of Rottweilers and the print is large, as if to cover enough paper to make a book. A few disturbing photographs I viewed included the docking of tails and removal of dewclaws without wearing sterile gloves, an unsanitary condition. Puppies should be taken to the Vet and only experienced, not beginning, breeders should dock tails and removed dewclaws. Some misinformation was also added to the book, a bitch for instance needs to have her OFA certification before being bred, which is not possible until the bitch is 24 months of age and yet the author says that the bitch should not be bred before her second season. A few important aspects of breeding have been included while others such as OFA for hip and elbow dysplasia, CERF, heart and thyroid clearances, von Willebrand and brucellosis as well as temperament testing, for both stud and bitch, have been left out. Anyone bu! ying this book needs to do further study about breeding dogs responsibly, this book is only skindeep!
Book Description
Rottweilers make excellent guard dogs, but require rigorous yet humane training.
Customer Reviews:
Very useful!!!.......2006-03-19
I will keep this short. Having never been a rott owner this book has taught me alot. Very educational about rottweiler's. The book is detailed in most areas from breeding to late adulthood.
Must buy for first time rott purchase.
not all that informative.......2006-03-18
I didn't learn anything more from this book than what I learned from my dog trainer. Don't buy this is if you are looking for something more advanced.
A MUST!.......2003-04-09
I BOUGHT THIS BOOK BECAUSE I HAVE NEVER HAD A DOG BEFORE AND RECENTLY PURCHASED A ROTTIE. THIS BOOK IS SO HELPFUL. THERE ARE ALOT OF THINGS I DID NOT KNOW BUT THIS BOOK EXPLAINS ALOT ABOUT THE BREED. THE ONE THING I LIKED ABOUT THE BOOK IS IT ALL ABOUT ONE BREED AND NOT ABOUT THE DOG FAMILY.
Rottweilers and a Respect for the Breed!.......2002-02-13
I never realized prior to now the sheer importance of proper care and training of a Rottweiler until reading this book. This book should be required reading for anyone considering raising a Rottweiler or who currently owns one. I actually felt myself doubting whether I can provide the necessary attention and fortitude that this breed requires. I have always loved this breed and the book precisely specifies why it should be loved and why the task of raising one should not be taken lightly. Every consideration for the Rottweiler is mentioned in this book, from purchasing to care and nutrition, to behavior and training. I thoroughly recommend this book for anyone considering purchasing a Rottweiler or if you currently own one.
Great foundation!!.......2001-07-17
I was given a full-blooded bitch and did not really know alot about Rottweillers except for the preconceived notions of their viciousness. With smaller kids at home I was a little worried. But after reading this book and discovcering what a wonderful breed these dogs are, I am no longer worried and our puppy is doing awesome and I am learning alot every day. The book has great information about the Rottweiller breed and what to expect as well as great advice and techniques for training. Nicely written.

Book Description
Laurie Simmons has been dealing with issues from In and Around the House since the mid-1970s. Her seminal early work was some of the first to use set-up photography to create images with intensely psychological subtexts and forcefully feminist content. The 1950s-style constructed interiors used dolls, dollhouse furnishings, miniature props, postcards, interior decoration books, pamphlets and magazines to create images that questioned female stereotypes and American clich s with humor and charm. Though they were shot both in color and black, the latter have remained woefully under-published and are presented here, for the first time, in full, along with a critical essay by Carol Squiers, curator at the International Center of Photography in New York, and a personal account by Simmons herself.
Book Description
The intimate ache of the dollhouse and its air of manipulation (whether as consumer object or ventriloquist dummy) has become as indelibly identified with pioneering photographer Laurie Simmons as with Ibsen. She's even designed a dollhouse for a toy company. Mostly self-taught, Simmons began working in the 1970s, when color and staged tableaux were first being explored by fine-art photographers, and has since mapped out a world all her own, mostly in haunting miniature. Over the past 25 years, her photographs have conveyed a bittersweet nostalgia for the 1950s while edgily commenting on consumerism, feminism, and other fraught aspects of postwar American culture. The accompanying essay by Kate Linker concentrates on selected series that cover the artist's entire oeuvre--from Ventriloquism, Walking Objects, and Lying Objects to the 1997 Self-Portraits and Caf of the Inner Mind--and so is essential reading for any photography aficionado.
Customer Reviews:
Simmons' photographs form an unforgettable impression.......2006-01-04
Walking, Talking, Lying is a full-color gallery of most unusual photographic works by Laurie Simmons. Nearly all the photographs are of dolls or mannequins juxtaposed with objects and artifacts - from a doll-sized hourglass with very feminine lower torso and legs to a ventriloquist's dummy seated and posed as if for an expensive formal portrait. The text commentary by Kate Linker points out the binding themes of Simmons' work such as the confusion of individuals with their possessions, to the extent that they identify with inanimate objects. Simmons' photographs form an unforgettable impression in their fusion of human nonhuman simulacra in this singularly distinctive treasury.
Book Description
Cupcakes, chocolate bars, truffles, candied fruit, apple pies, ice cream sundaes. . . America has a passion for edible sweets, a fact that has informed not only food manufacturers, the Food and Drug Administration, health care professionals, and restaurateurs, but also many generations of artists. In Sweet Tooth, 40 artists, including Ed Ruscha, Wayne Thiebaud, Claes Oldenburg, Vik Muniz, Laurie Simmons, Shimon Attie, Enrique Chagoya, Jana Sterbak, and Andy Warhol, explore the visual landscape of the dessert, while at the same time confronting such complex issues as body image, feminism, gender issues, and illness. One hundred works in a variety of media, ranging from the 1970s through the present, offer variations on the still life, meditations on the perishable, thoughts on sweet symbolism, and an always welcome sugar fix.

Book Description
"Mommy, Barbie's bashing Ken with a rolling pin!" Internationally acclaimed photographer Laurie Simmons deftly uses dolls, the archetypal little girl's toy, to launch a critique of the norms of femininity, masculinity and gender that can reduce women and men to mindless stereotypes. A slyly powerful, even subversive piece of work. Limited edition of 400. Dimension: 8 ½ X 12 inches, 72 b&w and 68 color reproductions.

Book Description
In a 1992 interview, Laurie Simmons stated that, in her first body of color works, she was "trying to recreate a feeling, a mood from the time I was growing up: a sense of the 50s that I knew was both beautiful and lethal at the same time." Reproduced here, her early series Interiors and Big Figures depict a post-World War II, 50s suburbia through plastic housewife and cowboy dolls placed in constructed interiors and manipulated exteriors. While the dolls provide a sense of play, the reality of the images they model is unavoidable. The female is pictured in the home, but she is alone, isolated, and vulnerable. The cowboy exudes the confidence and independence of a life of adventure, but he cannot escape the implied violence, racism, and paternalism that also characterize his ideal.
