Though famed in his time for his playboy image, all purple scarves and modish hairdo, former South Vietnamese prime minister Ky proved over time to have been a man of substance. In this revealing autobiography Ky recounts his rise to and fall from power and the errors great and small that led to his nation's defeat. "Corruption," Ky writes, "permeated every corner of the Vietnamese social order." Ky used his office to root out corruption and carve an independent path, often clashing with the likes of William Westmoreland and Nguyen Van Thieu in the bargain. Proudly relating those struggles, Ky also defends figures whom history has treated harshly, including Lyndon Johnson and General Nguyen Ngoc Loan, "the rarest of Vietnamese birds, the honest cop," who will forever be remembered for executing a Vietcong suspect before Eddie Adams's camera. "My biggest mistake was allowing the wrong man the opportunity to lead a guaranty of defeat. For this I beg forgiveness of those who fled into exile, of those who remained, and from those then unborn." So Ky closes this memoir, a work of considerable interest to students of and participants in Vietnam's long war. --Gregory McNamee
Book Description
The history of the Vietnam War has rarely been told from the Vietnamese perspective-and never by a leader of that country. In Buddha's Child, Nguyen Cao Ky reveals the remarkable story of his tumultuous tenure as Premier of South Vietnam, and offers unprecedented insight into the war's beginning, escalation, and heartbreaking end.A thirty-four year old pilot and Air Force commander, known for his fighter-pilot's moustache, flowing lavender scarf and his reputation as a ladies' man, Ky in 1965 agreed to lead South Vietnam after a series of coups had dangerously destabilized the nation.Ky's task was to unite a country riven by political, ethnic, and religious factions and undermined by corruption. With little experience in governing and none in international affairs, and while continuing to fly combat missions over Vietnam, Ky plunged into a war to save his homeland. He served as premier until 1967, continued to be active in the war after his resignation, and finally left Vietnam in 1975 during the fall of Saigon.Buddha's Child offers Ky's perspective on the crucial events and memorable images of the Vietnam War: the coup against and execution of President Diem; the self-immolation by the Buddhist monk, and the radical Buddhists' attempt to topple Ky's government; the bloody and pivotal Tet Offensive; the shooting of a Vietcong prisoner, captured in one of the war's most notorious photographs; the Paris Peace talks that sold out South Vietnam; and the last, desperate days of Saigon. In frank language, Ky discusses his own successes and failures as a leader and dramatically relates the progress of the war as it unfolded on the ground and behind the scenes-including anecdotes about Lyndon Johnson, Richard Nixon, William Westmoreland, Henry Cabot Lodge, William Colby, Henry Kissinger, and many others.Buddha's Child is a revelatory, fascinating account of a nation at war by a most unusual man.AUTHORBIO: Nguyen Cao Ky lives in southern California. Marvin J. Wolf is the author or coauthor of nine nonfiction books, including Where White Men Fear to Tread, the national bestselling memoir in collaboration with Native American activist Russell Means. He lives in Los Angeles, California.
Customer Reviews:
faulty memory = faulty biography.......2006-05-09
After reading his book, it occurred to me that perhaps Nguyen Cao Ky has faulty memory of many events that happen during his tenure as the Prime Minister of South Vietnam such as the Buddhist Rebellion in Central Vietnam in 1965. In this book, Ky claimed that he formulated the plan to put down the Buddhist rebellion in Central Vietnam in 1965, this is incorrect. In 1965, there were two different Buddhist group vying for power in South Vietnam. One was the An Quang branch headed by the militant Thich Tri Quang, the other is the non-violent Vietnam Quoc Tu branch headed by Thich Tam Chau. The An Quang branch was the violent, "militant" branch who wanted to create a government headed by monks, many of the monks in the An Quang group armed themselves with sub machineguns, they block the roads using Buddha statues and they were able to entice thousands of soldiers from the 1st ARVN Division to desert and joined their cause. Libraries were sack by the militant Buddhists, books were burned and people of different religious faith were beaten. It was at this time that Cao Van Vien the Chairman of the ARVN Joint Chief of Staff formulated a plan of using the Vietnamese Marines to quell the unrest, Vien pretended to withdraw the Marines from their area of operation in Binh Dinh to Saigon then on the day of the withdraw, other Marines battalions were airlifted to the Quang Ngai airfield under the command of General Ngo Quang Truong and Truong was able to use the Vietnamese Marines to subdued the rebellion. Aalthough Ky did not play an important role in this event, Ky claimed that it was he who formulated the plan to put down the rebellion.
There were a few important events that some how was missing in Ky's book. On the last few days of April 1975, with the NVA closing in on Saigon, Ky made an appearance at Ho Nai, standing in front of thousands of people Ky encouraged people to "fight on to the last men" and that Ky will stand by them to the end. Hours after his speech, Ky flew out to the American carrier abandoning the very people he has asked to fight to the death. Recently Ky went back to Vietnam to work for the Socialist Republic of Vietnam government. In one of the recent interview to Viet Weekly, Ky was asked about the current rampant corruption in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, especially the PMU18 scandal where government officials who made only $200 U.S dollars a month bet on horses to the tune of $2 million U.S dollars each month for the last 10 years. Ky said that such corrupt government officials should not be prosecuted and should be allow to keep all the money they have stolen from the people as long as these officials would not take bribes again. Ky comment tells you all you need to know about him as a former Prime Minister of South Vietnam and as a person.
A Strange Conclusion.......2005-03-04
This book is supposedly the autobiography of the author's experience in the Vietnam War. But it has a rather bizzare conclusion: the author alleged that China is now a threat to world peace and may well bring the world to another World War!!
The author then proposed that surrounding asian countries ally themselves to the West( ie. USA ) to encircle and contain China.
This anti-China rheotric is totally irrational and paranoid. I hope that the author will further explain his weird theory in future editions of this book.
Nguyen Cao Ky - a pawn or a man of destiny?.......2004-11-09
In all honesty, I have learned some historical facts that I had not known before reading the book. Before I delve into the content the book, let me say that the book is well written. I enjoyed the audiobook, however, the producer of the audiotape should have consulted with a Vietnamese before attempting the Vietnamese proper names. The reader butchered the names horribly! It is ashamed that such an undertaking of almost 12 hours of taping did not go through this quality check. The publisher must have known that there are more than non-Americans who seek to learn about Mr. Ky and the Vietnam war. I could barely make out the names of the generals and the politicians involved. The names of geographical areas of Vietnam were horrendously mispronounced. It is unfair for me, in spite of the political 'dryness', has some humors and at times quite entertaining.
My. Ky is as boastful as he's ever been. There are endless mea culpas and monday-morning-quarterbackings throughout the book. But one cannot come to any other conclusion that with the leadership of Mr. Ky and his cohorts helped to lose the war in Vietnam.
He painted a picture of mass corruptions, shameless abuses of power, government properties, US aids, etc.. From president Ngo Dinh Diem to Nguyen Van Thieu, with questionable goals and intent, together brought south Vietnam to its deserved fall.
Mr. Ky failed to recognize that what he did during his youthful days was reckless and in a different setting such as the U.S, he would have been indicted on many charges. He was accused of derelict of duties by allowing his pilots to smuggle contrabands into VN not to mention allegations of drug smuggling. He used and abused government properties recklessly to woo girls by hovering aircraft on top of civilian neighborhood. He treated government asset as his own. He claimed that he did not take money from the people but he enjoyed his good life in many other ways. All of this would have been intolerable in western countries.
He conveniently left out the comment on how Hitler is his only hero (while he was in London , 1965). I believe that Mr. Ky did not corrupt the way many other generals did such as Gen. Dang Van Quang and Pres. Nguyen Van Thieu etc.. All in all, he was so wishful to think that he could have done any thing different better to 'save' Vietnam, it's almost laughable!
To his credit, I think Mr. Ky is a man of character, flawed as it is, few would have accomplished what he did during the war. He is an honest man!
Footnote: as critical as I am about this book, I did enjoy reading and did learn something from it. I have also obtained an autograph of the author.
Important historical book.......2003-01-05
How could it be anything else being written by one of the players. I think Cao Ky Nguyen confirmed many truths and it was important for that to come from a South Vietnamese leader. All that you need to do is keep in mind that he is trying to portray himself in a more favorable light than he deserves as he was just as politically immature as the rest of the inept leaders he comments on.
The American lessons from Vietnam in essence are the old sayings that you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink, and that if you want something done right do it yourself. When you put Nguyen's rationalizations in a more accurate perspective, he makes this clear.
Opportunity LostýSeizing Defeat From the Jaws of Victory.......2002-10-20
This was, in many ways, a painful book to read. I was in elementary school at a school for missionary children in northern Japan when I read in my Weekly Reader that Nguyen Cao Ky had become the new prime minister of South Vietnam. I remember the news gave me a sense of hopefulness about the war, which we were kept informed of by the Far East Network (armed forces radio) and the Voice of America. I can also remember my feeling of confusion when I read that Theiu had replaced Ky as Vietnam's leader.
Without belaboring the point, I have long been frustrated by the American handling of the war, which, I believe developed out of our abdication in Korea. I don't want to spend time talking about that, because it is a tired and painful subject. Suffice it to say that this book confirmed my feelings, but added some new insight.
For example, this book adds some insight into the resentment that many Vietnamese nationals felt toward the French, whose colonialism was largely exploitive, and financed by the Americans in amounts that Everett Dirksen would call "Real Money." In addition to that, I did not know, until I read this book, that Westmoreland was fully informed of the North Vietnamese intention to stage a major invasion during Tet, but decided to keep this from the South Vietnamese army! This appalling mismanagement of the crisis produced a disastrous and completely unnecessary problem for the Cao Ky, but it was a challenge that the South Vietnamese met and overcame. While Tet had a demoralizing effect on the American public, it was actually a victory for South Vietnam, and a major defeat for the North Vietnamese.
The book also addresses some more familiar themes, such as the legendary ineptitude of McNamara, but the most poignant event in this book is Nguyen Cao Ky's impulsive decision to abdicate leadership in favor of Thieu. Nobody (including Nguyen Cao Ky himself) knows why he did this. Perhaps it really was a selfless act of a patriot who had no interest in promoting himself, and was just trying to do what was best for his country. Or, perhaps, he had become bored with the monotony of leadership, and decided to abandon his responsibility, just as he discarded his wives, one after another, when he got tired of them.
To his credit, Nguyen Cao Ky takes full responsibility for his fateful decision. And it would not be fair to say that he abandoned his country completely, because he was always ready to serve, and to lead when the chips were down. In that sense, we must give credit where credit is due, and call him a patriot. But this is small comfort for the painful realization that the war effort was doomed by his decision, although I am still not sure if I believe that it was more significant than the moral exhaustion of the American culture, which rendered the Americans all but impotent to save Vietnam.
Read this book. Nguyen Cao Ky is a very good storyteller, and a man of adventure who liked to live on the edge. You will almost certainly come away better informed about the first war the Americans lost. It is a sad story, but one which can have a certain measure of redeeming value if we are able to learn from our mistakes, and adapt to the very different place that east Asia has become.

not worth wasting trees for.......2006-12-10
The late Henry Morris, a creationist with no background in biology or history (his degree is in hydraulic engineering), levels false implications of evolution with evils (or Morris's preceived evils). This book is nothing more than a thinly veiled attack on the science of evolutionary biology using long dead mens' faith as some kind of attempt to place Christianity on a pedestal (funny how he didn't get into other faiths, as if science cares if someone is Christian, Hindu, Muslim, or what have you). The bulk of it is something a middle school student could have done as a report; as for accuracy I would suggest reading biographies by actual historians. Someone who is willing to lie about evolution (e.g., Henry Morris) should not be taken seriously in any scholarly field that he is not formally trained in.
fascinating, little-known information!.......2006-11-13
Wonderful, fascinating, little-known information lies in this book! Evolutionists would have society think religion (and Christianity specifically) has only ever hindered science, yet this book shows that the best founders of our modern scientific disciplines were motivated to explore the world explicitly because of their faith in God.
These men were not Christian out of the cultural norms of their respective societies, these men sincerely had a zealous faith that far exceeded their peers in their day.
This books forever terminates the image of anti-scientific, Christian knuckle-draggers; a must-read.
Excellent Little Book.......2006-05-06
Some qualifications for opining to start. I have read this book and I am a public school teacher with 9 years of teaching elementary school. I have a BA in Psychology and a M Ed.
This is a great little book. It is important that we understand the beliefs of the scientists as well as their backgrounds. Contrary to popular opinion, scientists aren't devoid of beliefs and everyone's beliefs influence their perspectives. This can be readily seen by perusing these reviews. Our beliefs also determine our actions which makes being certain of their veracity all the more important as they will dictate the course of our lives and our destiny.
These scientists stand head and shoulders above many of their peers. It is important for all of us to understand what they believed and why they chose those beliefs.
I highly recommend this book and I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did, and do every time I read it. It is a short, interesting, and fun read. Bon appetit!
Darwin would be Proud.......2006-03-17
This book, written by Henry Morris and Chuckie Darwin, gives new perspective of creationism. The science of intelligent design shows the blueprint used by an "intelligent designer" to create the universe. Periodically, the creatures designed, both evolved and changed. Monkey may or may not have evolved into man. But various creatures have changed as God planned they would. God can make these plans, because ... well, ... He is God!
Good for late elementary and early middle school.......2006-01-08
This is a good book if you want "just the facts". If you're searching for intimate details about the lives of these scientists or discussions about parallel universes, then this isn't the reading selection. Yes, written from a decidedly christian viewpoint ...so, what's the problem? If you are afraid or refuse to give God credit for creating the universe, then, again, this is not the selection for you. I like this author and publisher because we can present God and science to our children and not treat them as mutually exclusive.

Yoga has millions of devotees in the Western world, but most contemporary yoga students center their practice on postures but not on the ancient teachings that are still relevant today. In Yoga for Transformation, author Gary Kraftsow leads the modern yoga student in combining posture practice with the rich and deep tradition of mind, heart, and spirit. He presents core postures (asanas), clearly illustrated by models of all ages, and describes how to incorporate breathing, chanting, meditation, prayer, and ritual to add a spiritual dimension to your practice.
"The purpose of these practices is to serve you in deepening your self-understanding, and to assist you in the process of self-transformation," writes Kraftsow, founder of the American Viniyoga institute and author of Yoga for Wellness: Healing with the Timeless Teachings of Viniyoga. Viniyoga is a methodology for developing a personal yoga practice using asana, pranayama (breathing), meditation, ritual, and prayer. This multifaceted book is recommended for the serious yoga student who wants to explore new dimensions of yoga; it's not for the beginner or dabbler. --Joan Price
Book Description
While there is no denying yoga's popularity as a form of physical exercise, the other life-enhancing aspects of this tradition remain obscure to many Westerners. In Yoga for Transformation, Gary Kraftsow introduces techniques that treat not only the physical body but also the emotions, mind, heart, and soul of the practitioner-the places where real transformation can take place. There are breathing techniques to control energy levels, exercises to train and sharpen the intellect, and meditative practices to help increase self-awareness. With more than 350 black and white photographs throughout, this unique and accessible book is dedicated to strengthening the whole self-body, mind, and spirit.
"Gary Kraftsow . . . will inspire every Yoga enthusiast." (T. K. V. Desikachar)

Yoga for Transformation: Ancient teachings and Practices for Healing the body, Mind and Heart .......2007-09-04
This is an excellent Yoga Book. I would recomend it for Vinyasa Yoga enthusiast and other forms of Yoga enthusiasts alike, as well as people new to Yoga. It has easy to follow instructions with short routines that even the businest person can fit into their daily routine. I have also found from first hand experience that the techniques for back pains work if followed consistently.
Elegance in Action.......2003-01-31
There's lots of noise in the yoga world today. . .infomercial style promises that yoga will sculpt this and mold that. This book brings much needed clarity to a confused universe. It's message is simple, time-honored, and authentic: your yoga journey begins and ends with you. Yoga for Transformation is elegant and speaks with a quiet, compasionate wisdom that radiates the true spirit of a profound yogic heritage.
An Authoritative Presentation and Practice Manual.......2002-07-31
I have actively worked with this book for 2 months and this teacher for 5 years. This is an elegant, innovative introduction and practice manual for the broader and deeper dimensions to Yoga practice.
The publication is in two parts. The first is a presentation of the classical five dimensions to the human being from the Taittriyha Upanishad integrated with the Kriya Yoga model of transformation from Patanjali's Yoga Sutras and the age and orientation models of Yoga practice from the teaching lineage often known as Viniyoga in the West. This discussion alone will be of much interest to the serious Yoga student of any tradition, for many classical teachings are condensed in a well-written, authoritative and accessible manner. The authority comes both from the influential teachings of Krishnamacharya and his son, Desikachar and the scholarship of the author, a student of Desikachar, Sanskrit and religion for many years.
Following this foundation is a series of discussions and practices sequentially emphasizing each of the 5 dimensions: Annamaya, Pranamaya, Manomaya, Vijnanamaya and Anadamaya. Within these discussions are more well-written teachings on Pranayama, the Bandhas and the Cakra model. These practices are instructive and surprisingly challenging by themselves, but they are not prescriptions. They are illustrations of principles that can be further adapted by individuals to better support their own bodies and purpose for Yoga practice. In brief, this is what the Viniyoga teachings are all about. Still, the practices can be practiced by individuals on their own or used by a teacher as a template when working with his or her own students in group classes. For those not familiar with Viniyoga, the practices are well-presented with pictures and detailed instructions.
For those who have worked with the author for some time, several of the practices are familiar, but others are new. Many of the best practices he has presented at workshops are not shown. This book will be a relief for the many students who have tried to recall the flood of information presented at workshops around the country because much, but not all, is finally written down. A natural complement for this book is Kraftsow's first book, Yoga for Wellness, where the principles of Viniyoga asana practice are presented, along with many therapeutic applications of breath and movement. Three other good complements are Yoga for Body, Breath and Mind by A.G. Mohan, The Heart of Yoga by T.K.V. Desikachar and The Essence of Yoga: Reflections on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali by Bernard Bouanchaud.
What you need from Viniyoga of Yoga.......2002-07-11
Designed very simply with clear pictures. A book that every yoga student should have. A very good reference. Gary Kraftsow's "yoga for wellness" deals with the technology behind viniyoga, where this piece gives a personal practice session including pranayama.

Eula Mae's Cajun Kitchen by Eula Mae Dore.......2007-09-29
After a wonderful forward by Paul McIlhenny (Tabasco) and introduction by
Marcelle Bienvenu (Who's your mama) you know this book has to be good.
The recipes are by Eula Mae, a long time cook for the Tabasco company, and
the narative is by Marcelle. Together they provide an insightful look into
Louisana Cajun cooking.
Cajun Delight.......2005-08-16
Miss Eula Mae has captured the spirit of Cajun cuisine. Of course, it didn't hurt that she lives on Avery Island and cooks under the auspices of Paul McIlhenny(of Tabasco fame). I found the recipes easy to use and uniformly delicious. My only problem was that I had a hard time choosing among all the great offerings. I suspect that I won't live long enough to try them all, but I intend to make a valiant effort to do so. If you like Louisiana cooking, whether or not you're accomplished at it, this is the cookbook for you.
Delicious and Easy to Follow.......2005-01-31
My husband has taken up cooking in the last few years and has begun to appreciate cookbooks. This is one of his favorites. We both love the recipes he has tried. He says, "The recipes are delicious and easy to follow. Eula Mae's fascinating stories make the book even more enjoyable."
A little piece of Acadiana........2003-01-06
Besides a good collection of everyday Cajun food, this book is rich in the history and lore of the area. Thanks to Eula Mae Dore and Marcelle Bienvenue, the history as well as the recipes of this area will not be lost.

Build Your Birdhouses and Feeders........2005-07-14
No place in this book gives hole sizes for the birds you want to attract. Birds are very fussy about the size of the hole and also the size of the nesting cavity. I would consider this the worst book I have ever read on building bird house and feeders. I am glad I looked at it before I gave it to a friend. Not one practical bird feeder for wet and inclement weather. Beautiful bird houses, but no birds!
Beautiful Book, Great Plans.......2000-06-25
Perkins begins the book with some backround bird and woodworking information that will be useful for the beginner. He then gets into plans for 19 houses and 7 feeders.
Each project includes color photos of the completed house or feeder - these are not just the figments of a writer's imagination. There are detailed, measured, exploded color drawings of each house. His designs include several different methods of access for cleaning out the houses after each nesting period. I particularly like the "slide" designs - no tools or dropped screws to worry about.
Some of these houses are so pretty, I don't know if I would want to put them out in the yard. I suppose with a little imagination, you could scale his designs to meet the needs of a variety of species. He has a breif, one page chart showing entrance sizes for some birds. He also show "slot" as well as round entrance options on some of his designs. I still keep referring back to Scott D. Campbell's "The Complete Book of Birdhouse Construction for Woodworkers" as a more complete technical reference. (See that review on Amazon.)
Overall, this is a very good book on birdhouses, very inspirational for the imaginative bird "landlord." This book is profusely illustrated with color photos and drawings; it could be a "coffee table" book if you don't get it filled with sawdust!

This is a wonderful book for parents........2001-11-30
Within the strengths-based approach to working with people we have understood that the most important factor in client change is the client and what they bring to counseling. This book is for them. Linda writes in a clear and concise way about hundreds of ways parents can use their own resources to positively impact their relationship with their children. As in her earlier books for teachers, she includes sample certificates and forms that parents can use to focus and document their progress. This book is a great resource for parents who want to stay positively involved with their children's growth and development. I highly recommend it.

Any person in an artistic field should read this.......2002-10-02
I had this book for almost a year before I read it, but once I did I couldn't imagine why I hadn't read it sooner. The man, Karl Wolfe, I didn't know, but through the book his truely poetic nature comes alive. And while, most of the book isn't about his painting you get a genuine veiw of an artist, by an artist.

Book Description
Beyond Loyalty is the powerful and inspiring story of a young man whose life and education were rudely disrupted by the U.S. government's imprisonment of Japanese Americans during World War II.
Few Japanese Americans have written so frankly about the humiliation they felt during World War II. Moreover, Kiyota is perhaps the first "renunciant" to share publicly the mental anguish that led to and resulted from his decision to relinquish his U.S. citizenship. Further, as a "kibei nisei"--one of a small group of Japanese Americans who spent part of their childhood in Japan--Kiyota writes from the vantage point of an individual who is at home in two very different languages and cultures.
Recent events such as the Gulf War have made it all too clear that there is still much to be learned about democracy's treatment of its ethnic minorities. By putting a human face on issues of constitutional rights that arise in time of crisis, this absorbing account deserves a wide readership.
Customer Reviews:
I RESPECT SENSEI Kiyota more after reading his biography........1999-06-07
This book is how to remain a Knight & Gentleman and to pursue your Life Mission against all the odds of life.
Dr. Kiyota had a dream since boyhood to educate college students about the Western and Asian cultures & philosophies. He successfully achieved his mission by having been teaching for over 30 years as a professor and as a sensei. I am taking his class, "Kendo: Integration of Martial and Liberal Arts" and I am happy to have finally found my Sensei. There is a lot to learn from him as an open-mind and objective individual!!!
The book is full of documented facts, critical thoughts, and beautiful language. I have invested about 15 hours of concentrated reading with only 3 breaks: to sleep and to eat. In overall, Dr. Kiyota is the person one should meet in life and to shake his hand!!!
