Book Description
The inspiring, true story of a top soldier who survived Jim Crow only to land in a struggle for survival beside his racist white captain after they were downed in Vietnam
Raised in the segregated South, Ezell Ware was determined to excel beyond the lines drawn by white power brokers. He became the top recruit in his Marine training class; having grown up without running water, electricity, or sufficient food, he wasn't daunted by military life. He eventually earned a chance to join the Army's helicopter pilot program, realizing his dream of flying. It was a role that would change his life, and the life of an unlikely partner in valor at the height of the Vietnam War.
Downed by enemy fire while on a mission over thick jungles, Ware and his badly injured captain endured a three-week descent into hell, with one canteen and little defense against countless deadly forces. But when his captain revealed his membership in the Ku Klux Klan, their situation took a turn that surprised them bothand put Ezell on the road to becoming a general.
A unique memoir of heroism and humanity, By Duty Bound captures a crucial chapter in American history through the eyes of one of its most remarkable witnesses.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Read, But a Few Nits.......2007-10-18
I read this over two days, that's how enjoyable and interesting this book is. Ware has led an amazing life, and I really thought he brought to life what life was like growing up poor and black in rural Jim Crowe Mississippi.
The book switches back and forth from a straight retelling of Ware's life, to a day by day retelling of the three harrowing weeks Ware spent in the Vietnam jungles with his co-pilot, a Grand Dragon of the KKK.
But for all the self-examination, there are a few nits. Ware considers himself someone who never quits, who always strives to succeed. Yet he never comes to grips with why he was married and divorced as often as he was, why in the space of a few years he moved from the Marines, to college (which he dropped out of), to a great job with General Dynamics Corp. (which he abruptly left), to becoming an officer with the San Diego Police Department (which he abruptly left on a bet), to finally becoming an Army Helicopter pilot in Vietnam.
Still, his is an inspirational and moving story, gripping and suspenseful. In his introduction, he blames the bureaucrats and politicians in DC for losing the Vietnam War, yet he never suggests we might be having the same problem now in Iraq. And his "Domino theory" of why we were in Vietnam was disproved by history.
But read this book not for Ware's misguided political analysis, but for the amazing accomplishments he achieved in defense of his country. He is a true American patriot.
Deeply Compelling Story - History of Jim Crow South as Intriguing as Viet Nam Story.......2007-08-31
I received this book from the author as a gift, having met him when he was speaking to an organization of families of service members who lost loved-ones in Afghanistan or Iraq.
The author is extraordinarily charismatic and inspiring and this book provides wonderful insight into the life-experiences that made him the man he is today. While I had learned about Jim Crow laws in high school history, this book provided deeper insight into the harsh adversity, resignation and palpable fear that so many black Americans faced. The author paints vivid pictures both of his upbringing and his service in Viet Nam.
In response to the 2-star rating (Boddy): I found myself wanting to read the next installment of this story when I finshed, but that in no way detracted from this book - rather it illustrates its strength. America is blessed to have leaders like General Ware!
House from Wisconsin.......2007-08-11
I gave this book the highest rating because I liked it,I liked it alot. I have often read books using this style, main event and reflections on youth. Ware and Engel did a terrific job presenting each story. I have often read books with this format but I didn't reflect on my own youth. Although quite different I began thinking about the ways I used to earn money as a child. Race for me was Native Americans and Whites. When I was in Vietnam in 1968-1970 (two tours) I understood the bond that war brings together and dissmisses beliefs and values for a stronger emotion, survival. I would read another book by this team if one would come out and recomend it to my friends.
By Duty Bound, survival and Redemption in a Time of War by Ware and Engel.......2005-11-30
What a wonderful, fast moving, history bound, uplifting and riveting book this is! It isn't a blood and guts war story, nor is it a gun-ho military brainwashing trip. It is a rich, absolutely rich story about being black in America during the 40s, 50s, 60s- today, having dignity and honor, with a burning desire to achieve a goal and a determined spirit to live life with honesty and compassion. It is extremely humane and positive in a world that often seems rather bleak and discouraging. Compelling is the word that comes to mind. Two exciting stories of this man's life, told in alternating chapters, had me turning pages as I discover the strength, compassion, and dignity of the human spirit. One reviewer stated that Ware's story lost speed after his rescue. I rather think that the reader missed the many points that were made, perhaps a bit subtle for him/her to understand. Hats off to Ware for telling his stories, and bravo to both he and Engel for putting his experiences into words. The men in my life (ages 16-70) are all receiving this book as a Christmas gift this year. I know they'll appreciate it!
By Duty Bound.......2005-10-28
By Duty Bound is an excellent book. The style of writing was so compelling that from chapter to chapter I couldn't wait to find out what would happen in the next chapter, going from his life in Mississippi as a young man, to his and Burdetts ordeal in the jungle of Viet Nam. The story was so well written that you find yourself feeling the emotions of the characters. Ezell was so honest in revealing his achievements as well as his disappointments in his life that you can't help but gain a respect for him as man. I have read the book three times, and each time I have found it even more inspiring. I highly recommend this book no matter where you are in your life. It will inspire you to be the the best you can be, and to never give up.

Book Description
For nearly half a century the pickled brain of Albert Einstein has roamed the world-in Tupperware containers, courier packages, and, most famously, car trunks. In Possessing Genius, award-winning journalist Carolyn Abraham presents the whole story-the mysteries, myths, and almost unbelievable facts-of the brain's postmortem odyssey.
The story begins with in April 1955, when Thomas Stolz Harvey, chief pathologist at Princeton Hospital, found himself in charge of dissecting the cadaver of the greatest scientist of his age, perhaps of any age. He seized the opportunity to do something "noble." Using an electric saw Harvey sliced through the skull and gingerly removed the organ that would both define and haunt the rest of his life. Harvey struck a controversial deal with Einstein's family to keep the brain, swearing to safeguard it from souvenir hunters and publicity seekers, and to make it available only for serious scientific inquiry. Not a neuroscientist himself, he became the unlikely custodian of this object of intense curiosity and speculation, and the self-styled bulwark against the relentless power of Einstein's growing celebrity.
Bridging the post-war era and the new millennium, Possessing Genius is the first comprehensive account of the circuitous path the brain took with Harvey during the decades it remained in his possession. Harvey permitted Einstein's gray matter to be sliced, diced, probed, prodded, and weighed by those hoping to solve the enigma, and locate the source, of genius itself. Einstein's brain was more than a subject of scientific investigation but a kind of holy relic; the history of its perambulations since 1955 reflects the vicissitudes and vanities underpinning what we believe makes us human. Abraham has gathered together all fascinating details and documents of the brain's saga-including previously unpublished correspondence between Harvey and Otto Nathan, the executor of Einstein's estate-and from them woven a story that is both deeply engrossing and highly illuminating.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating..........2007-06-24
Possessing Genius: The Bizarre Odyssey of Einstein's Brain by Carolyn Abraham and Driving Mr. Albert by Michael Paterniti both cover the same saga of Einstein's brain after his death. While Driving Mr. Albert is fun, Possessing Genius is fascinating.
Einstein died in a Princeton, NJ hospital in 1955. Pathologist Dr. Thomas Harvey performed the autopsy and took the brain for his own use. For the next 40 plus years, Dr. Harvey went through three wives, a number of jobs and moved to various states. The only constant in his life was Einstein's brain. Abraham writes "even the basic facts of his story were so strange that supermarket tabloids would have been hard-pressed to invent them." While wanting to study this famous specimen, Dr. Harvey wasn't a trained neurologist and spent most of those four decades as a "curator."
Interspersed throughout this story, Abraham delves into the physical side of the brain and the history of neurological research. While this topic might seem very technical, the author explains it in a way that is fascinating and easy to understand. She covers such topics as the debate between nature and nurture, differences in the brain based on age, gender, and sexual orientation, physical dimensions of the brain, the development of the brain and components of the brain (neurons, glial cells, etc.). She also includes lots of trivia. For instance, the US Amy convened a meeting in Washington, DC and invited Dr. Harvey. They presented him with their plans to study Einstein's brain. Harvey refused to hand over the brain of this famous pacifist to the military.
Did any scientist discover the key to Einstein's genius by studying his brain? The jury is still deliberating this question. But no matter what, those who did come in contact with his brain describe the emotional high they experienced by handling "the organ that changed the way we viewed the universe." After reading Possessing Genius, I don't know about gaining a better appreciation for Einstein's brain, but I certainly have a better understanding and respect for the human brain in general.
A Long Strange Trip.......2003-06-27
Like many people, I'd seen the factoid that Einstein's brain was kept in a box in Kansas, and always wondered about the full story. Running across this book I was very happy to finally get that story, told in a way that was engaging and fairly honest about everyone's role in the story (to the extent that's possible).
The only reason I'm giving the book four stars instead of five is that I found that my interest waned significantly over the last 50 to 75 pages. I think it had to do with the shift towards more science and less biography, though I'm not sure there was a way to write this book without the shift (it isn't huge, but it is noticable).
I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Einstein, but perhaps even more to anyone who likes quirky history or biography.

Good story well told.......2003-02-27
This is a book with much to recommend it. Kudos to Carolyn Abraham for finding mind-blowing story and for doing such an effective job in teasing our a logical narrative structure. Two small complaints: 1) Abraham has a tendency to try to dramatize events, where it would be much more effective just to give the facts and let the reader draw his/her own conclusion; 2) Abraham seems determined to deify the protagonist, Thomas Hardy, in the eyes of her reader when the facts of his life so obviously undermine this effort. Otherwise, this book is a must read.
Writing well is obviously not a science.......2003-02-17
Abraham is lucky to have subject material (or at least a subject) that is inherently interesting. Perhaps she should stick to articles in the newspaper because her prose, while attempting for poetic, seems forced and awkward at times. She makes the scientific approaches towards Einstein's brain's study easily accessible to virtually any reader, although for those with any background in neurology/psychology, much of the book may feel watered down. While the writing is none too impressive, the material is engaging and interesting. However, Abraham perhaps summarises the book best in the epilogue with the word, "anticlimactic". Quite honestly, the man himself is likely more interesting than his brain. In short: a biography might be more fulfilling.

A common problem for people with diabetes is finding healthy, great-tasting recipes for just one person. Quick & Easy Diabetic Recipes for One solves this problem with more than 100 tempting, easy-to-prepare recipes.
Customer Reviews:
Seniors take note!.......2007-02-14
I ordered this book for a friend, who was recently diagnosed with diabetes. She loved it so much that I ordered one for myself (and I'm not diabetic) and she ordered another copy for her brother! Since many older adults deal with diabetes and many of them cook for just one person, this book helps to make a significant life change easier to manage. Older people often have many reasons not to cook for themselves, relying on fast foods when they need to change old habits and eat more healthfully. The recipes are easy and tempting making this guide truly useful for seniors and others who live alone...diabetic or not. Change can be fun and tasty too!
A gift.......2007-01-09
I purchased this gift for my sister..she is a single person w/ Type 2 diabetes. She was so excited to see the things that she could make as a single person. Things that sounded good to her taste buds. Thank you!
For One .......2006-11-03
If you are alone and need to cook for one - diabetic or not - this is a
good book to have, gives you great recipes for just you and it is not hard
to double up if you are having company over.
Cookbook.......2006-07-31
I found this book very helpful. I'm sure I will be using it often.
Actually Edible Recipies!.......2002-01-13
I've been suckered into getting a lot of cookbooks that call for ingredients that I would not give to my dog. In fact, the dog wouldn't even eat some of the "healthy, yummy, tasty, etc." leftovers from some books.
Every recipie I have made in this book tastes good, helps me to control my diabetes, and actually looks so good my husband (who isn't diabetic) asks if he can have some. You can easily double the recipies for another person, or use the "leftovers" for a great lunch. No muss, no fuss cooking that doesn't make you turn your kitchen into a restaurant.
I wish there were more books like this. (The only one that is close so far is Snack Nibble Nosh...by Ruth Glick, if you want to buy a 2nd book & get 2x as many great recipies!)

Everything it promises.......2007-09-28
Some of these recipes have become family favorites. With only a few unusual ingredients, this cookbook is more about preparation, using heat in creative ways to bring out the flavor. The best greens recipe I have ever used.
Innovative vegetarian.......2007-01-12
This is one of my favorite vegetarian cookbooks, mainly because it is creative. I get tired of the same-old standard cook-the-tofu recipes, but this one has some unique combinations and great tastes. Some of the recipes are too time-consuming for me which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5.
One of the best vegetarian cookbooks I have ever come across!.......2005-09-20
I have been a vegetarian for more than 25 years, and this is my favorite cookbook of the dozens I have acquired. The recipes are varied and come out very well -- the Veggie Paella (pictured on the cover), made with the Mediterranean stock (recipe is also in the book), is out of this world! There are also wonderful recipes with quinoa and other grains and beans that aren't found in most cookbooks (try the quinoa tabouli or quinoa caviar for a treat!). I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys good meatless meals!
A cookbook you can use........2001-11-11
It's true. The recipes are good and only unnecessary fat is cut out. The recipes aren't too complicated or time-consuming and I haven't had a failure yet. If you like Alice Water's Vegetables, Deborah Madison and the like, you should enjoy this cookbook. Happy Cooking!
High-Flavor, Low Fat Cooking.......2000-02-04
This books and all of Deborah Madisons' cookbooks are the standards in our household. If you only purchase it for two recipes the Paella and the Lasagna, you will have added great dishes to your menus. Your friends will love them too. They have flavor, texture, are visually impressive and fun to plan a meal around.

Being a passionate and truly mad gardener herself, Watkins takes a good hard look (through a mulch-encrusted eye) at the essentials, the foibles, and the out-and-out craziness inherent in the love of growing things. This book reveals the truth about many deep, dark gardening secrets such as: The Miracle of Leaf Mold, The Useful Poop Factor, and the real difference between garden equipment and garden gizmos. A wacky look at gardening from one of its own,
Garden Madness is the perfect gift for serious gardeners who don't take themselves too seriously.
Customer Reviews:
Funny yet serious.......2000-11-20
This book is so funny it should carry a warning label: Do not read if you are drinking hot coffee!I laughed out loud so much, my cat came over and stared into my face to see what was going on! Yet the book also has a serious underlying point to make about human impact on the natural world. I especially liked Watkins's take on the milk hormone question. You can feel her impatience with dumb stuff. She also gently punctures garden snobbery and the catalog ordering of goofy objects mania.Maybe someday she'll write a sequel; I hope so.

What controversial treatments should I watch out for?
What should I tell my child's school, and what should they be doing?
What legal issues do I need to understand to get my child the right help and protect his or her rights?
How can I handle behavior problems?
How can I help my whole family cope with the situation?
Dr. Silver's warm, thoroughly practical guide will give parents, teachers, and others the support they want and the answers they need.
Customer Reviews:
Dr. Larry Silver's Advice to Parents on ADHD.......2003-06-19
This was one of the first books that I read after discovering that my daughter had ADHD and also LD. I found Dr. Silver's book very thorough and very readable. I particularly liked and appreciated the chapter on dealing with ADHD in the family. So many of the other books seem to focus solely on school and homework issues when ADHD effects all aspects of a child's life.
I highly recommend this book to any parent with questions about ADHD and related issues.
Difficult to follow.......2000-12-06
I bought Dr. Silver's book on the recommendation of my daughter's pediatrician. I found it to be quite detailed and well-researched, but it was excruciatingly dry and clinical. I am usually a voracious reader, but I had trouble getting through this book. It's an important reference book if you are doing detailed research, but it's probably not the first book you should tackle after you learn your child has ADD. In my opinion, a better "first book" would be "Driven to Distraction" by Edward Hallowell et al.

Book Description
The author was born in 1940 and spent his childhood in two small villages, the paternal and the maternal, in southern Vietnam: Binh Chuan and Tuy An (An Phu). The villages were deeply affected by the powerful political events of the next fifty years. In this memoir (first sentence: "I was born as the Japanese Troops were invading northern Vietnam"), the author writes of what he saw, heard and knew, providing an invaluable social history of the country. Readers will learn about a people who have endured separation, dictatorship, carnage, persistent suffering and poverty, all the while yearning for independence and prosperity. Included are many stories-some funny, some heartbreaking-that reveal how the Vietnamese people lived, as well as their thoughts on war, on the French, Japanese and Americans, on the Nationalist and Communist governments, and on escape. The result is a heartfelt "social painting" of the nation.
