3 out of 5 stars A Word Of Warning.......1999-01-09

Books on this interesting character are not plentiful, therefore it was a must for my library. How reliable are the facts provided? Jeffery gives the impression that Kitchener was victor over the Mahdi in 1898. Elsewhere I am led to believe the Mahdi died soon after Gordon. Did anyone proof read this book? After all it is University of Toronto Press!

Book Description

In Darwin's Shadow is the gripping story of the heretical British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace who co-discovered natural selection independently of his more well-known contemporary Charles Darwin. Utilizing a number of never-before-used archival sources that bring to bear new interpretations of this most fascinating scientists, best-selling author Michael Shermer applies his training in both the history of science and psychology to reveal the life, science, and personality of Wallace to unravel the mystery of his scientific, quasi-scientific, and non-scientific ideas. Shermer's unique approach goes beyond narrative story-telling to analyse the science, culture, and ideas that lie beneath the life story, in a path-breaking approach to biography. Shermer presents the two major points of intersection and conflict between Wallace and Darwin, one so radical that Darwin accused his younger colleague of intellectual murder! Wallace has always appealed to lovers of travel and adventure stories, because that is the life he led: In Darwin's Shadow will also appeal to historians of science, readers of popular science, and fans of Shermer's previous books.

3 out of 5 stars Darwin forever under a cloud...........2003-11-30

After reading a review in NY review of books of Shermer's book I snapped out of my previous opinion and decided to revise my previous review here. Distracted by the issues raised in A. Brackman's book, A Delicate Arrangement, 'rebutted' by Shermer, I wavered wrongly in my original view at what appears now as a clever whitewash of Darwin.
Putting Brackman's arguments to one side for the nonce, the plain fact of the matter is that Darwin was, and has been ever since, engineered by Big Science propaganda into the exclusive icon for the discovery of evolution. And is Shermer just the fellow for this displacement job on Wallace. Wallace confuses people because they think that Darwin on the descent of man is established science, when the reality is that an immense con job has always finessed the fact that science has no conclusive theory here, and Wallace honestly pointed it out. Period.
As to the rest of Shermer's arguments in his book, viz. on the 'science' of history, they are without merit and constitute another of the 'bilge and balderdash' necessary to cover up the fact that there is no science of history, also.
The whole Darwin field is addicted to a pack of lies and it seems all parties have lost the ability to distinguish truth from distortion. Reviewing the details of the Ternate affair, we seem to see the ambitious Darwin concerned to rescue his priority, after years of so doubting his theory he couldn't publish it, and getting his priority by rigging the priority list and rushing into print. We have spent over a century beholden to this farce. Time for a little skepticism.

4 out of 5 stars In the shadow no longer.......2003-11-17

Alfred Russel Wallace seems to rate hardly more than a footnote in the history of the theory of evolution. Like most who have studied this subject, I knew of Wallace's mutual discovery of the theory and evidence in support of it. I knew too of Darwin's generous introduction of the man as a co-discoverer, and even of the theory that that introduction might have been more premeditated and less generous that it appears. In some of my reading I had even learned of Wallace's "defection" to spiritualism. However, where Darwin's life is everywhere paraphrased and his thoughts on the subject of evolution almost subject to canonization, Wallace's life and thoughts seemed just to have "fallen out" of the picture. Michael Shermer's book, In Darwin's Shadow, The Life and Science of Alfred Russel Wallace, provides a more detailed look at Wallace the man and scientist. It also looks at the subject of how history and biography reflects the psychology of their time-in some ways, he does so unintentionally.

In many ways A. R. Wallace, though not a formally educated man, was more of a research scientist than Darwin. He apparently plunged into the pursuit of regional studies with a vengeance for most of his youth, some twelve years abroad, studying natural subjects in their native habitat. Whether it was beetles in the tropics, indigenous people in their native and in their European dominated settings, the communities of animals characteristic of different regions in Southeast Asia, or the geology of various regions, etc, his studies were extensive and detailed. According to Shermer, he logged in over 20,000 miles on various collecting trips, and just on his Malay trip collected almost 125,000 specimens, over a thousand of which were new species (p. 14).

His reputation for openness and exposure to new experiences was amazing, especially for the day, and recognized even by those who did not necessarily agree with his opinions. His written output was prolific and varied, with topics ranging from ancient history, animal behavior, botany, ethics, history of science, linguistics, plurality of worlds, phrenology, spirtualism, taxonomy, womens rights, agricultural economics, literature and poetry, poor laws, and trade regulation (p. 15). Shermer indicates that even into old age Wallace wrote on a variety of subjects and had a life-time average output that ranks high, even when compared to modern writers like Gould, Sagan, and Ernst Mayr.

While I found Shermer's historical matrix model interesting, I felt that I learned more about how history and biography are created in our own time and what it says about us than I did about Wallace or his contemporaries. The matrix model seems to smack of psychobabble and Oprah "awarenesses" and introduces a lot of introspection into the possible effects of birth order, etc. on behavior. It tries to hard to get at the "whys?" of human behavior and motivation for which there is little proof for or against. It was only once the author got into the life and times of the man himself that I could more easily settle into Wallace's world. For one thing, I understood better what the flap about the man's delving into spiritualism was all about. I also learned where Wallace and Darwin differed, even from the beginning, in their own individual approach to evolution, and why Darwinian evolution is the model that gained the greatest respect and serves as the foundation of modern theories.

I think more than anything, the book introduces the reader to the fact that science is a communal thing, a human thing, and is subject to the vicissitudes of other human endeavors: chance, political and social prejudices, personalities and egos, readiness for new ideas, plain old mistakes, etc. I learned again that scientific discoveries occur in tandem, when the world is ready to receive them, that they're sort of "in the air." I learned that more than one person can come up with the same or similar idea, putting their own personal stamp on the concept, thereby forwarding human knowledge just a little bit more. I learned that scientists can be wrong or partly wrong about their topic and can be wrong or partly wrong about topics outside their expertise, and most importantly, that reputation should not be given total credence without proper thought. Because a person is famous does not mean that their opinions are any more valid than anyone else's.

An enlightening biography of an interesting man. While I think that Darwin's is the more carefully thought out and supported theory of evolution, I think that Wallace was the more interesting and happier person. I suspect it would have been more fun to have known him than to have known Darwin.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting biography.......2003-06-09

A nice story of the scientist who came to a similar conclusion about natural history as his elder and more famous colleague, Darwin. I enjoyed reading about Wallace's background (quite different than Darwin's), his world travels, and the ways in which his theories differed from Darwin's. The author uses multivariate analysis on personality traits to attempt to explain some of these differences; I'm not fully convinced of the validity of that (for every statistical rule there are exceptions, and as Mark Twain colorfully observed, "there are lies ..."), but it's an interesting possibility.

2 out of 5 stars The new phrenologists?.......2003-05-25

I bought this book rather in spite of than because of the other Amazon reviews, and lugged it with me on a flight out to the West Coast. The book lasted from Boston to Atlanta, and when it was over I closed it with a sigh of relief. While Shermer is certainly at times an engaging writer here he indulges in a rather peculiar form of quantitative psycho-history mixed in with the equally peculiar allocation of behavioural traits to birth order. There MAY be something in this somewhere, but at the same time it smacks of the 19th century Victorian fetish about cranial measurments that Shermer's evident hero-mentor Stephen Gould took to task in THE MISMEASURE OF MAN. That Shermer is so obsessed with his methodologies (he devotes a substantial portion of the book to 'how he did it") is a shame because it lessens and weakens his focus on his putative topic, the fascinating Alfred Wallace. Instead of really delving intoWallace's background and early experiences we get a few pages of quick gloss intertwined with what frankly struck me as mumbo-jumbo about what it means to be a Younger Child. This may be all very new Age & Hip right now, but I strongly doubt it will prove to have much in the way of scholarly legs. Then there is the tedious re-hashing of Gould's speculations which other reviewers have already re-hashed. Yup, they are old, they are trite, and can we please now move on? Perhaps the most interesting part of the book is the discussion of Wallace's involvement with various "Spiritualist" frauds during the second half of his career. Here the writing really picks up & one has the sense that "aha, now we are going to get somewhere". Alas, the excitement soon fades & the book itself fades out to a gentle glow at the end. i really don't know how to categorize this text. It is far too incomplete for someone unfamiliar with Wallace's life & work to get a real sense of the man and it offers such an odd view on Wallace's relationships with friends, family, colleagues & rivals that one is left wondering just what was intended. A footnote to a more general study? Maybe, but i agree with the reviewer who calls for the need of a REAL biography that puts Wallace AND his science in proper context.

4 out of 5 stars Cursing the darkness.......2003-04-27

Restoring Albert Russell Wallace's reputation is an occasional occupation with historians. Some wish to elevate him over Darwin, usually on the question of "priority" - who first thought up evolution by natural selection? Others portray him as the victim of Britain's class structure - doomed to obscurity because of his humble background. Shermer, although the title implies otherwise, makes an attempt to reconcile Darwin and Wallace, at least over natural selection. From that point, Shermer follows Wallace through a complex life. This readable, if somewhat shallow, biography does Wallace justice, but at the cost of shedding the broader context. In support of his programme, he relies heavily on Frank Sulloway's research on "birth-order" and creativity. This innovative study has had a rocky career, but Shermer finds it useful. For him, the findings have meaning, but their validity remains unclear. Especially when comparing but two subjects.

Wallace was a complicated personality, perhaps even more so than Darwin himself. In order to build a coherent image of his subject, Shermer creates a "historical matrix model". This is a three-dimensional visual aid of the elements he's utilising in erecting Wallace's biography. Mixing time, Wallace's various excursions and interests, Shermer ties the whole structure to his subject's views on evolution of humanity and the mind. Whether this method works may depend on your attitude about applying mathematical structures to a man's life. Fortunately for readability, Shermer keeps the application of this device at a low key, saving his analytical summation to the end of the book - where it falls flat.

Shermer traces the voyages Wallace was virtually forced to undertake. Financial woes dogged the naturalist throughout his life, although it's hard to see that from Shermer's portrayal. Although Shermer puts Wallace "in Darwin's shadow" he was easily as fluent a correspondent as his more famous counterpart. Yet few of the cited letters contain appeals for employment. Instead, Shermer takes us through Wallace's views on social questions, spiritualism and variations on natural selection. He also shows how Wallace traveled and dealt with a broad spectrum of issues and the people associated with them. Darwin, of course, maintained almost a hermit's life at Down. It's strange that Shermer makes little note of the contrast of the two since much of Darwin's information leading to natural selection came from a global correspondence. Wallace, ever the field researcher, relied more on his own collections for evidence.

Although providing us with a highly readable biography of the man, Shermer is virtually silent on the general social scene of Victorian Britain. In pursuing his subject's life, we are given quirky events and some questionable people. There's an excuse for avoiding the tumultuous politics of the era, but Shermer follows Wallace in his admiration for socialist Robert Owen and the role of Mechanics' Institutes to educate the workers. Both schemes were designed to generate worker contentment at minimal cost - Britain retained a horror of worker rebellion after the Napoleonic era. No mention is made of the Luddite or Chartist movements, which should have elicited comments from socialist Wallace.

A more bizarre oversight is Shermer's failure to impart Wallace's feeling on some of natural selection's sharper criticisms. One in particular, Lord Kelvin's assessment that the age of the solar system was too short to allow the needed time frame for evolution. Fleeming Jenkin's point that changes in organisms would be blended back, a point that Darwin, ignorant of Mendelian genetics, agonised over, is also overlooked by Shermer. Since any biography of Darwin will deal with these issues at length, it's only logical that Shermer should have addressed them. Either that or Wallace ignored them - we remain in the dark either way.

Shermer's sins of omission may be forgiven as retaining clarity and brevity. His committed sins, however, cannot be condoned. His long career as an acolyte of the Pope of Paleontology leads Shermer to peck at Darwin's image. The worst examples are intrusions of "punctuated speciation" in a variety of disguises. Shermer's attempt to promote his mentor's outdated thesis borders on the pathetic. He aggravates it later in the book with other Gouldian pronouncements. Gould makes the index six times, with "punk eek" scoring another ten. In a biography of Wallace, this ploy is simply an outrageous non sequitor. He puts Wallace in "Darwin's dark shadow" [what other kind is there?], implying some sinister agenda. Wallace is "eclipsed" by Darwin - as if Darwin so intended. Darwin's opposition to spiritualism is a "secret war". The position is misleading. The shadow is cast by the long-lived eminence of Darwin's contributions, but Shermer makes no mention of that. It's history's verdict, not Darwin's.

Shermer's use of Sulloway is bewildering. Parallels between Darwin and Wallace are inevitable, but the author's are flimsy. "Birth order" as an issue with these two men is misleading. If he wanted to compare the two as personalities, why does Shermer ignore the similarity of Wallace's losing his first love, Marion Leslie and Darwin's loss of Fanny Owen? That Wallace delved into a wider list of topics than Darwin keeps the former's public life more interesting, but doesn't move the latter into a "shadow." Wallace wasn't dogged by illness throughout his life - his long life certainly suggests good health. He shed whatever Christianity he had at an early age, while Darwin was driven to abandon it from his studies and the loss of children. Shermer doesn't need to shatter Darwin's image to restore Wallace's, but that intent is broadcast in his title. It was a mistake. If Shermer is intent on restoring Wallace's reputation, he should have hired somebody to do it for him. Janet Browne would be a good first choice. [stephen a. haines - Ottawa, Canada]

      Book Description

Ear infections are still the leading reason parents take their child to a doctor. To combat infections, parents and doctors employ arsenals of antihistamines and antibiotics, and too quickly resort to ear tubes and surgery. In this updated and revised second edition of his bestselling Childhood Ear Infections, Dr. Michael Schmidt describes the current controversy in medical journals questioning existing treatments for chronic earaches.

5 out of 5 stars We avoided surgery!.......2005-09-24

My 4 year old daughter was diagnosed with reduced hearing 7 months ago; turned out she had fluid in both ears. The ENT (ears, nose, throat specialists) put her on antibiotics. Did nothing. Then we went away for a month and upon our return, we had her checked again. Fluid had decreased in 1 ear but was still strong in the other. ENT feared it would impact her learning (the decreased hearing) and lead to ear infections (they couldn't believe she hadn't had any, to my knowledge, since she was about 2). In the meantime, my 1.5 year old son also had 1 ear infection after the other, and when we returned from our trip he also was checked - fluid in both ears, plus a lingering infection they treated with antibiotics. They strongly urged me to get tubes in their ears. Our niece had them inserted and my sister as well as everyone else said it's no big deal, the worst part is seeing your child unconscious as it's general anaesthesia, but they bounce right back. I made the surgery appt and then my dad sent me an article from the Wall Street Journal citing studies that concluded the tube surgery is done way too often, and unnecessarily. Since this was coming from my very conservative dad, I thought I'd better question establishment. So I got this book, "Healing Childhood Ear Infections" by Dr. Schmidt. After 1 chapter I canceled the surgery. Instead, I got them into chiropractic care, removed dairy (cows milk) from their diets, and took them to a naturopath who put them on 3 supplements: minerals for their immune systems, and something to thin the mucous. Today I took my daughter to the ENT for a check-up (1 month after trying alternative treatments) and they were shocked - no more fluid, perfect hearing! You should have seen how proud she was when they told us. My son still remains to be checked, but knock on wood, has been infection-free since I started all this. The kids love the chiropractor - my son screams when his turn is over - and there are plenty of dairy alternatives out there (soy is also to be avoided or at least moderated but my son loves goats milk yoghurt). The supplements mix in with their juices so they don't even notice them. Anyway, I'm telling you this so that you question your own kids' treatments. According to this book, once a kid is on antibiotics it's very likely he'll develop another infection (ear) soon thereafter. In most countries, they're not even prescribed unless the baby is under 1 or has had a high fever (over 101) for 3 days. Plus, this book stated that most US children have a very nutrient-defficient diet and in particular lack minerals such as magnesium & zinc, which are very important for the immune system. Hopefully you can all benefit from this - and although I don't know which of my 3 forms of treatment did the trick with my daughter, I'm going to continue all 3. Thank goodness for this book, which gave me the tools and the courage to try safer alternatives.

This book was just what I was looking for! My son was battling repeated ear infections and I knew there had to be other options than antibiotics and ear tubes. I am so glad I read this before we progressed to surgery. I am now an active homeopathic user, and my son has been earache free for months!
I thank the author for presenting all the options available.

5 out of 5 stars very good alternative methods to healing ear infections.......1999-08-06

This book reviews many different alternative medicines and therapies for healing ear infections. It covers the over all health and nutritional needs of children and how they relate to the healing process of ear infections. The homeopahtic information was a bit generic and left me needing more information on which medicines to choose from. Over all I found it to be a very good book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for Parents.......1999-04-16

By the time my son was 18 months old, he had had seven ear infections in the past six months and was scheduled to have surgery for tubes. My father suggested I research alternative medicine first, so I bought this book. What a wonderful source of information that most peditricians don't tell you. We tried a handful of rememdies recommended in this book, all with great success. It is now 9 months later and my son has only been diagnosed with one ear infection during this time, and to our surprise when we told the peditrician we didn't want to treat this ear infection with antibiotics, he agreed that it was best NOT to treat it, that his own immune system would fight it. And guess what? It did!

Guillermo Pernot's ¡Ceviche! boldly expands the traditional recipe for ceviche in 48 variations to encompass a world of flavors. Pernot's signature recipes from his Philadelphia restaurant, ¡Pasión!, are a fusion of Latin American and Asian cuisines. Divided between ceviches made with fresh seafood and fish and those made with cooked, the book also includes vegetarian ceviches, salads, salsas, and vinaigrettes. Some of the recipes, such as Bay Scallop Ceviche with Blackened Tomatillo-Truffle Sauce, are surprisingly easy to make (it uses truffle oil, not whole truffles). Others are more complicated, such as Lobster and Vanilla Bean Ceviche, but the results are so impressive they're well worth your time. There's even an Argentinean Beef Roll Ceviche, beautifully marinated with star anise, white peppercorns, Thai fish sauce, lime juice, and sesame oil. A chapter at the end shares a dozen cocktails popular at ¡Pasión!, including a Brazilian Caipirinha, an Italian Rum Negroni, and a Cuban Mango Daiquiri. This cookbook is easily a party in the making. --Leora Y. Bloom

Ceviche! by chef Guillermo Pernot and Aliza Green, offers 48 ceviche recipes-and everything you need to know about this little side dish-along with chapters on salsas, salads and cocktails-all tied together with extraordinary full-page color photographs. That's the good news. The bad news is that ingredients called for in most of the recipes are not readily available. To their credit, the authors have a chapter on special ingredients and sources, as well as a glossary of 54 entries pulled out of the recipes. Nonetheless, to make the dishes in this book requires a commitment to shop for and stock the pantry with niche spices, condiments, veggies, fruits and booze. The material on escabeches, salads, salsas, vinaigrettes, garnishes and cocktails is more user friendly, but even here the ingredient requirements are daunting.

The book is impressive from the culinary point of view. Pernot's techniques are well grounded. The text is to the point and fun to read. His interest in Japanese fresh fish cuisine influences his ceviche creations in inventive and delightful ways. The food presentation, serving dishes and settings for the photos are terrific. In all, Pernot presents an in-depth look at ceviche.

But there is more to this book. Upon reflection while in the process of selecting some recipes that I might use in class, I now conclude (a week or so after writing the above) that Pernot takes civiche to new and creative heights. This book is "way out there," in the manner of chef Keller's The French Laundry. It is full of ideas that experienced cooks will ponder and use. Which, come to think of it, is a desired outcome of reading any cookbook. Few chef/authors, however, reach this level of creative substance

1 out of 5 stars Not the real thing........2003-02-09

My country is world famous for ceviche, so I can recognize a good recipe when I see one. I was looking forward to this book, but was dissapointed by its sophistication and complex recipes, two non- existing elements when making a true ceviche. To us, (latins), a good ceviche is made always keeping the freshness and flavor of fish or seafood and not masking it with heavy sauces or complex additions. This book has nothing to do with the real thing.

1 out of 5 stars Ditto to Disappointing.......2002-09-19

What drove me down to only one star was the lack of even a basic discussion of curing and the parameters that can be varied. Rather that discuss basic marinade in a detailed chapter at the front of the book, its relegated to the appendices.

          5 out of 5 stars Superb!!.......1999-10-22

I read all the reviews of the other books and found this one to be the easiest and the most "natural" which is the purpose of this exercise! I copied her menu plan, meal components, amounts and carry them when I shop! One idea as a novice in this area that I have found to be the quick & dirty preparation key... get a meat/food grinder! I throw all the veggies and some raw meat (their first course) into the grinder and the dogs gobble it up! From there I go to the other items suggested in the book such as chicken or turkey parts.... and then desert....the raw bone with some meat on it! My two Airedales get excited about meal time for the first time!! All raw, all natural and all great! You should see their teeth after just a few weeks! I'll never go back to ''dog food''.... you won't either!

3 out of 5 stars Common Sense book.......1999-06-03

I read this book out of curiosity and looking for a better diet for my pet. The ideas are based on common sense and it is tough, at times, to get through the authors personal belief system on the subject. Her writing does not seem to come from any professional background or research, making it all a bit hard to swallow. It does seem logical that dogs and cats should not eat what the food stores pass as edible food, but maybe humans should not as well. A bit more thought and academic dietary training might have made the book more substantial.

3 out of 5 stars Biologically Appropriate Nutrition for Dogs & Cats.......1999-05-10

Having read just about every book on natural/raw/whole foods diets for dogs, I must say that this one is the most restrictive, as it does not allow any grains, dairy products (incl. organic yogurt with active cultures), or raw honey (which many experienced breeders using holistic methods consider a "must" in dog rearing). Instead of modeling her dogs' diet on that of wolves and wild dogs and allowing changes to best tailor the diet to the individual dog, Schultze seems determined to replicate the wild canine diet in every way possible (though she does recommend mega doses of vitamin C, flax seed oil, and a couple of other supplements which wouldn't be found in the wild). She also has the bad habit of passing off some rather controversial opinions as scientific fact without providing any footnotes to back up her claims. Having said all that, the diet she recommends (which basically consists of raw muscle and organ meats, raw meaty bones, crushed veggies, eggs, and supplements -- fruit, nuts, and seeds are optional) is biologically appropriate and easy to follow for those new to raw feeding. She even provides a sample monthly menu, and the holistic yellow pages at the end are a nice touch.

All in all, not a bad book to start with, though you will definitely want to learn more about canine nutrition. If you have a dog with cancer or severe food allergies, Schultze's diet may be just what you've been looking for, but I feel it is unnecessarily restrictive for young, healthy animals. I urge you to read other books on this topic (in particular Levy and Billinghurst), keep an open mind, and be prepared to experiment a little to figure out what works best for your dogs. Remember: There's no one diet that's optimal for every dog.

4 out of 5 stars Good book to start on: but you have to learn more!.......1999-04-07

I wrote this littel, handy booklet in less then 2 hours, not bad for a foreign! I really love the size; and the yellow pages and the blank menu and food diary pages. But yet, if you'd like to do it right, you MUST to learn more! Here in Europe we don't have any nutrition consultant, and very few pet healthy stores, so I have to learn by myself what is realy healthy for my cats, and belive me when I say that is hard to find good books about healthy nutrition whitout the internet.

I can say: buy this book if you intend to switch youre furry friend on a healthy home made diet, but please learn and read more! If you live in America, consult youre holistic vet or nutritionalist, they will help you learn! Good luck and don't forget to hugge and kiss youre pet when he/she finish the meal, they diserve it!!!:-))

5 out of 5 stars Best Practical Guide to Implementing Natural Diet for Pets.......1999-01-30

If you have been thinking about feeding your pets a healthier, more natural, species-specific diet, this is the operations manual. It has a complete review of the compelling benefits of a natural diet without being exhaustive or too scientific. It's also the easiest to implement, by consolidating high-level menus into easy-to-read formats. It has some great testimonials in the back as well.

Very well written and illustrated book on hot glass techniques. Many different aproaches covered; i.e. italian, czech, and many others. Ed is very thorough in many of the most difficult techniques in glass blowing. All of his unique hand written and illustrated books are filled with humor and chuck full of information. A work of art in it self. Whether you are a glass blower or some one who is interested in understanding the complexities of blown glass, this is a must have. There are no other books out there like this (besides his book on basic techniques... also excellent).

          4 out of 5 stars A Hot Glass Bible.......2001-03-07

Many, many techniques are discussed in this book. The book isn't typeset either, the author has written and drawn all text and illustrations by hand. It's a pretty unique book, it covers some beginning as well as some very advanced techniques. There's also a section on Venetian techniques, which I found very interesting. This book is great for both those starting out in hot glass and those who have been there for a while. It's also an essential book for any hot glass classroom, I learned a lot from reading it.

Ten years or so ago, I was a major contributor to Native Seed SEARCH, an organization ostensibly involved in preserving heirloom crops developed by so called native North Americans in the Southwestern US and Mexico. It disturbed me that no one answered my request that Mooney's book remain available through their organizaion-- including their titular head, Gary Nabban. I smelled a rat and, I believe, it is politics.

Rev up your Internet search engine and look for "Terminator Technology AND Monsanto AND Roundup" and you'll start to get the picture. Mooney broke the story, as far as I can determine, and he broke it in this book. Biotechnology, genetic engineering, and the domination of the world by the corporate pharmaceutical and petrochemical companies proceeds apace.

This is one of the most important situations on the planet and one that those not virtually, terminally ignorant and apathetic should at least monitor if not becoming actively involved.

          This book should be reprinted.

          Book Description

John Russell Pope is considered one of America's finest and most important classical architects, and this lavishly illustrated book, long overdue, is the first comprehensive survey of his work. This definitive study, comprised mainly of projects dating from 1910 to 1937, includes the Jefferson Memorial, the National Gallery of Art, Constitution Hall, the National Archives, and the Temple of the Scottish Rite in Washington, D.C.; the Frick Collection and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the Duveen Sculpture Gallery (for the Elgin Marbles from the Parthenon) at the British Museum and the Sculpture Hall at the Tate Gallery, both in London; mansions for the Vanderbilts and Marshall Field; and campus plans for the Yale and The Johns Hopkins Universities.

Steven McLeod Bedford follows the architect's career from his early education through his development as one of the most important figures in classicism, examining every aspect of Pope's architectural output, from his residential and commercial projects to his museums and monuments. Illustrated with archival photographs and Jonathan Wallen's never-before-published new color photography, John Russell Pope: Architect of Empire captures the enduring beauty and significance of this American master's oeuvre.

          Amazon.com

Despite the contemporary fascination with all things classical that has fueled the recent antimodern movement, this is the first book in more than half a century to explore the career of John Russell Pope (1873-1937). And it is worth the wait as it luxuriously presents the work of the architect of the National Gallery of Art, the Jefferson Memorial, the National Archives, and dozens of other buildings that are now intrinsic to the constructed environment of the U.S. capital. Pope was an architect of such harmony, balance, and effortless grandeur that he might well be ignored by current American neoclassicists, whose ill-conceived gewgaws are put to shame by Pope's stately homes, serene monuments, authoritative collegiate buildings, and regal museums.

Architect and historian Steven McLeod Bedford began his solitary, comprehensive, and difficult research for this book during the 1980s, when proponents of the high-minded cultural imperatives of the late 19th century, including the Hudson River School painters, were in vogue. Bedford admirably analyses the strengths and weaknesses of an architect whose most famous buildings "expressed the grandiloquent aspirations of private and public patrons." He also puts Pope's contributions in historical perspective, noting that a 1961 history of American architecture published by the A.I.A. found "no merit in Pope's work." Bedford himself writes with careful objectivity that "Pope seemed to adhere to the precept that a certain set of classical forms and plans existed whose inherent beauty was immutable."

Bedford writes warmly but dispassionately about buildings that many people love, and some--such as those who listened to Martin Luther King Jr. speak on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, or visited the soaring, softly sky-lit rooms of the National Gallery--have special attachments to. Beauty of this exalted type may no longer be of interest to the architectural cognoscenti, but there is a quality of calm endurance to Pope's buildings that has lasting appeal. In spite of the author's reserve, this is an inspiring, elucidating book, filled with plans, drawings, and color photographs that do some belated justice to Pope's career. --Peggy Moorman

This carefull reappraisal of Popes work was long overdue. One would hope that it will be followed by books on Cass Gilbert and Paul Cret who with Pope were the last masters of American Classical Architecture.Their work has stood the test of time beter than many more modern buildings.

I love all architecture and I can remember when I could count on titles from Rizzoli to uphold a certain standard, but that was too long ago. J.R.P. was an extrodinatry man for his time and a classic architect who deserves the same type of fame given to Frank Lloyd Wright. Rizzoli once again has failed the topic. Book Description

Born on a Kona coffee plantation in 1914, Koji Ariyoshi saw the importance of unions and strikes after witnessing labor clashes as a boy. In the 1930s he worked as a stevedore and wrote a series of articles about life on the docks for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. After World War II broke out, Ariyoshi used his language skills in the U.S. Army and was assigned to China, where he met several of China's future leaders, including Mao Zedong.

After returning to Hawaii, Ariyoshi became the editor of the Honolulu Record, the voice of labor during the turbulent postwar conflicts between unions and Hawaii's ruling elites. Following his 1951 arrest on charges of being a Communist, Ariyoshi spent the next years writing "My Thoughts for which I Stand Indicted" for the Record. The present volume draws from this series of weekly articles to create an energetic and thoughtful work chronicling a life lived at the center of events that transformed Hawaii, America, China and the world.

5 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary Human Being.......2003-11-19

Koji Ariyoshi was an extraordinary person--a true American hero. He studied journalism at the University of Georgia, staying with the family of novelist Erskine Caldwell. Years later, after successfully defeating his prosecution by the government, he went back to speak at the University. When the story was told of how they tried to send him to prison in the McCarthy Era, the audience was so overwhelmed by his courage that they spontaneously burst out in applause. This was no man born with a silver spoon in his mouth, but someone who had to work his way through many difficulties in life. As he was dying of cancer in 1976, the Hawaii legislature passed a resolution in his honor. "We shall overcome" could be the motto of Ariyoshi's life. This is a book that will carry his extraordinary story on to future generations.
