Book Description
Sea Legsis the story of Kathleen Crane, one of the first women oceanographers out of the world-renowned Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California. By turns personal and objective, Crane tells how her quest for freedom led her to the sea and her research of deep-sea underwater volcanoes. As research doors in the United States closed during the 1980s, Crane charted her scientific future with the Europeans and with scientists from the Soviet Union during the height of the Cold War. In the process she became an unwitting diplomat.
From the Galapagos dives in the Alvin and the early searches for Titanic, to many of the first scientific expeditions of the Arctic, Crane offers an exclusive and compelling first-hand account as a pioneer for women in oceanography. An explorer, environmentalist, and filmmaker, Crane's story encompasses the world's oceans, politics, international relations, scientific espionage, ships, and a passion for the natural world. At its heart, however, this is a story about humanity and the forces that drive people to persevere, despite the odds, and do the things they love. This paperback edition includes a Reader's Guide, featuring questions for discussion and suggestions for further reading.
Customer Reviews:
A Fascinating Page Turner.......2004-07-03
I really didn't know what to expect when I picked up Kathleen Crane's memoirs of her experiences in graduate school at Scripps and her professional life. To many, it might seem that a book on oceanography is a bit too esoteric or "niche" to be of interest to the general public.
But "Sea Legs" is a truly fascinating, deeply (no pun intended) interesting book. For the scientifically inclined, the detailed descriptions of Crane's work will be of great interest. But the general reader benefits the most from this book, as the reader accompanies Crane and her colleagues on numerous voyages of discovery to fascinating destinations. "Sea Legs" is well worth your time, and beleive me, it is a real page turner.
A memorable and informative autobiographical journey.......2003-04-08
Sea Legs: Tales Of A Woman Oceanographer is the personal and inspiring story of Kathleen Crane, one of the first female oceanographers to earn her credentials at the world-famous Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California. From research on undersea volcanoes, to meeting and befriending Soviet Union scientists during the height of the cold war, Sea Legs is a memorable and informative autobiographical journey filled with a love of science, a respect for the sea, and the sheer joy of reaching out to embrace the world.

Book review.......2007-09-27
I found the book to be inspiring and filled with facts, information and remedys for healing and healthy living. The 7 day fast, the cleansing and supplements, all made an incredible difference to me and my Mom, who has cancer. I purchased 4 more books and gave them friends and family in hopes they can be inspired to improve their health through life style changes.
Great Book To Help You Detoxify.......2006-02-09
This book gave me HOPE and a plan of action a few months ago, as I have breast cancer that has metastasized throughout my body. The surgeon who diagnosed me suggested that I purchase the book Death And Dying (don't ever believe your doctor, as only God knows His plans for you) but an acquaintance recommended A Cancer Battle Plan Sourcebook as well as the first book, A Cancer Battle Plan. Ann Frahm has been through the worst of it and survived. Now with her plan, combined with only 2 doses of chemo, I'm almost completely cancer free. Again, Ann gave me so much hope, and that's what people need more than anything when they get diagnosed. Since one out of two people are getting cancer, I highly recommend this book to everyone... that way you don't have to scramble to get information if you, your friends, or family get diagnosed. I'm thoroughly convinced that this plan of action could save the large majority of people with cancer, but people just aren't getting their hands on this type of information. Additionally, Dr. Frahm is a great guy who has emailed me with information several times. And, by the way, if you have cancer.... I"M WINNING AND SO WILL YOU!!
In response to "Disappointing,..." from 2003.......2006-01-04
I will be honest, I have not read the book. I just had to respond to the reviewer who was upset that Anne died and that without the walking proof then the author is not credible. "Disappointed" must watch movies but you know what, life does not always have a happy hollywood ending. Cancer is an aggressive disease that ravages the body. You said it yourself that she was able to prolong her death. Read the other reviews, many people have had positive response by following this plan - but there are no guarantees. Her death (albeit from complications) shows this. To claim that there was a guarantee and proof that this plan is the cure-all would be irresponsible. And if nothing else, at the very least, these people have a positive experience while going through the plan and a positive mental outlook can be a very strong medicine.
This book saved my life.......2005-08-23
To correct the above review,Anne Frahm actually died of iron poisoning due to having dozens of blood transfusions from complications resulting from a bone marrow transplant. The reviewer should do their homework before giving such a misinformed review.
After being diagnosed with an extremely rare form of Lympthoma,I read this book and followed the program strictly for five months. In that time I reduced a peach size tumor in my colon to the size of a pea in alittle over a month and in the last month have had all bloodwork, scans, etc come back normal. My oncologists are baffled as I have done no conventional treatment. This program works if you have the discipline to stay with it.
Dr Frahm lays out a plan that just makes common sense.I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has cancer or anyone who who doesn't want to get it.
Disappointing, especially after I found out Ann died.......2003-12-31
I bought this book because I liked the other book, A Cancer Battle Plan, so much. However, it must have been right after the first book came out (I really hope it didn't happen BEFORE it came out...) that Anne died. I didn't know she died until I read this book, and I was very disappointed to hear she died. After knowing that, using this book seemed like of pointless. After all, with all they did and all they knew, she still died. Granted she lived longer, but she still died. This book is basically a collection of all the latest and/or most popular alternative therapies out there, which if you have cancer, you have probably already read. Some of it gets a little extreme, with magnet therapy, etc. Will it save your life? Doing all these things will certainly give you something to try, but if you are a cancer patient like me--now with no job due to so called budget cuts (funny no one else got laid off) you might want to spend some hours of the day with those you love and doing things you enjoy. Taking supplements, juices, colonics on a schedule all day long may not be your idea of a new career, and a lot of this book encourages you to do that. My only comfort is, this book costs a lot less than the $3200 that going to their retreat would have cost, and everything they do at the retreat is in there, so buy this book and save yourself $3,200. Dave you sound like a nice guy, but it is hard to make people believe when they don't have the walking proof anymore. Sorry.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Irish 'haute cuisine'. Buy It'........2006-02-16
`Elegant Irish Cooking' by culinary scholar, teacher and professional chef, Noel C. Cullen Ed.D, CMC, AAC is a great foodie book; however it may not be the first Irish cookbook you want to get if all you want is a good cookbook with traditional Irish recipes. If that is what you need, go for `Irish Traditional Cooking' by leading Irish cooking school owner, Darina Allen or the much more ethnographic `Celtic Folklore Cooking' by culinary writer and folklorist, JoAnne Asala.
If Irish culinary traditions and cooking are major interests for you, this is an excellent second or third Irish cookbook, depending on whether you are more interested in cooking technique, fine dining and entertaining, or culinary lore. If your primary interest is in technique, get `ballymaloe cooking school cookbook' by school co-owner and Irish TV cooking show host, Darina Allen. Otherwise, go with this one.
Due to the author's dual life as both a chef and an academic, the book offers rewards for both interests. While Cullen is currently a professor in culinary and hospitality skills at Boston College, he trained and worked as a serious high end chef in many Irish and French restaurant kitchens and learned first hand the lessons of cooking to local products, at the same time unlearning his French cooking doctrines while he reached the upper levels of Irish `haute cuisine'.
The book begins with an excellent essay on the history of Irish food, including its high point during the Middle Ages monasteries and its low points during the potato famine. My only disappointment with this chapter is that it does not explain the mystery of why agronomists did not import one or more of the hundreds of other New World potatoes into Ireland when the potato blight affected only that one strain on which Irish livelyhood depended. On the other hand, this essay is very revealing about the curious fact that while Ireland is an Island, like the Greek Islands, there is a lot less seafood eaten than one may expect. Most fishing yields are sold to foreign markets or the Irish simply do not have a great taste for the fruits of the ocean, other than salmon and trout.
The title of the book and the author's background are excellent indicators of what we are given with the recipes in this book. We do not get standard recipes for traditional Irish dishes, although all the most traditional Irish produce such as milk, cream, cheese, apples, pears, potatoes, berries, lamb, pork, and game are well represented. Also represented is the one type of ingredient Ireland shares with another major Island nation Japan. This ingredient is seaweed. In fact, seaweed is historically important in that those who lived near the sea escaped the worst of the potato famine, not because they had fish, but because they had seaweed to eat.
While the book is primarily dedicated to Irish `haute cuisine', there is much here for the average cook. Opening the book at random shows me an excellent opening section in the chapter on `Salads, Dressings, & Cold Sauces' which details many variations on the classic French Vinaigrette. This may not be earthshaking for someone with 20 French cookbooks on their shelves, but for someone who only has room for a few good Irish cookbooks, this is great stuff.
I also find Cullen's plan for presenting a recipe very appealing, where each step is numbered, making it very easy to keep one's place in the procedure. It also means that each step is clearly identified, instead of being buried in a dense paragraph of text. This is especially rewarding in that the same gool schema is applied to all recipes, even those many which were contributed by `guest chefs', major chefs at restaurants and schools in Ireland. This also means that the many recipes which do not have a `guest chef' author are the creations of the book's author.
If by some chance, you have only room for a single Irish cookbook and this one appeals to you, I must say that many traditional dishes do find their way into the book; however, I cannot guarantee that the procedure is the same you would find at home in a private house in Dublin.
I especially recommend this book over `The New Irish Table' by Irish-American culinary journalist, Margaret M. Johnson, which also deals with recipes from Irish cooks, but more from the local pub than from the larger restaurants.
Last but not least, I find this an exceptionally well designed book for the average list price of $35. An excellent addition to any cookbook collection, and most especially to an Irish cookbook collection.
Beautiful book with authentic, delicious recipes.......2002-03-03
The book is beautiful and full of history and depth. The recipes are authentic and delicious. Highly recommended for a beautiful St. Patrick's Day dinner or night of Irish food.
An impressive compendium of 166 classic and recipes.......2001-03-18
Elegant Irish Cooking is an impressive compendium of 166 classic and progressive recipes in celebration of Irish cuisine and culinary traditions. Relying heavily on indigenous ingredients, these fabulous recipes showcase the techniques, excellence, and variety of Irish dining. From Pan Roasted Quail with Kildare Boxty; Cream of Watercress Soup with Warm Herbal Drop Scones; and Poached Sole Fillets in a Clonmel Cider Sauce; to Warm Salad of Emyvale Duck with Orange and Balsamic Dressing; Roasted Rack of Wicklow Lamb with an Herb Crust and Mint-Butter Sauce; and Moore Street Vegetable Tart, (and enhanced throughout with color photography by Ron Manville), Elegant Irish Cooking will grace any cookbook collection and enhance any family meal or celebratory occasion.
Not Your Grandmother's Cookbook!.......2001-03-09
The recipes in this book are terrific! Anyone looking for an escape from "traditional" Irish cookery books will love these unique and tasty recipes. Well worth the price! Clear, consise directions. Even the beginner cook will be able to make these dishes tonight! (All that being said, some related books I'd like to recommend on generations-old Irish recipes are Irish Heritage Cooking, Irish Traditional Cooking, and Celtic Folklore Cooking.)
Chef Cullen is great.......2001-02-28
I saw a demonstration he gave using recipes from this book a few weeks ago. The samples provided were outstanding. I went home and made the smoked salmon stuffed chicken breast, and it was a hit with everyone

Book Description
Having a puppy is one of the greatest joys in life. The unconditional love that one gets from dogs is unbelievable. Faversham was the cause of my living when my husband died. He was my constant companion and got really distressed when he saw me crying. Later when life improved if Faversham got into some mischief, all I had to say was "Do you want Mummy to cry? He would immediately stop, come near me and put his hugh paws on me. I still can't believe that a landlord and his underlings could play such dirty tricks. All I wanted to do was to rent an apartment and live peacefully with Faversham. LeFrak had only one decent person working for him - Jack Friedman. He told me how I was being used as an example to other tenants with pets. I shall be forever indebted to Major Koch for passing the Dog Law and Judge Sparks for seeing through the lies that Moskowich told me. Also many thanks to the neighbors who wrote lovely letters bout Faversham and last but not least Jolene Marion, Faversham's Attorney who advised me and consold me during the 14 months of trial and tribulation caused me by an unconscionable landlord. Recently I was at a party commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's ascension to the throne, and a lady came up to me and said "I hate to tell you I can't remember your name but I do remember your dog's name Faversham". The lady was Dr. Linda Jacobson, Faversham's vet.
Book Description
This book, in the “Complete Illustrated Guide” format covers jigs and fixtures, a subject of perennial interest to woodworkers. Jigs are like clamps. As the saying goes, “You can never have enough of them.” Jigs, simply put, are devices, sometimes shop-made but now often available commercially to enable woodworkers to do something more than once. For example, some jigs are fences that ensure straight cuts or templates capable of guiding tools to create a certain shape time after time. Woodworkers love jigs and fixtures for the same reason they are drawn to woodworking–designing them is about figuring out how to do something. All woodworkers are secretly engineers and inventors, and jig design and construction is a way to indulge that need. Some woodworkers love jig-making so much, they never build anything but. Simple or elaborate, jigs are an essential part of woodworking. This book, authored by prominent woodworking author, Sandor Nagyszalanczy, is organized like his successful 1994 book Workshop Jigs and Fixtures, according to function. This approach allows woodworkers to either build the jig exactly as shown or modify it to suit a wide variety of purposes. (Another thing woodworkers like is having choices.)
