Book Description
A charismatic naturalist, bird-watcher, teacher, artist, photographer, film-maker, and winner of the Nobel Prize, Niko Tinbergen was a prominent and influential scientist. Jointly with Konrad Lorenz, he laid the foundation for a new science, the biological study of animal behaviour. 'Ethology', and his talent for devising behaviour-testing experiments, provided an outlet for Niko's enthusiasm for gulls and sticklebacks, snow-buntings and foxes, wasps and falcons, and even children. This first full-length biography of Niko Tinbergen, lavishly illustrated with many of Niko's own drawings, describes his background in Holland, a naturalists' paradise, and the beginnings of his investigations into the behaviour of birds, fish, and insects. Hans Kruuk also explores is Niko's relationship with his colleague and co-Nobelist Konrad Lorenz. These were two men full of contrasts: Niko a charming, self-effacing field man and experimenter; Konrad a flamboyant and egocentric German, always full of new ideas. Niko's Nature goes on to follow Niko's progress in Oxford after the Second World War, where he became the world authority on the behaviour of animals in the wild: his inspiring book The Study of Instinct remains an all-time classic. As a scientist Niko will always be known for the four fundamentally different ways in which he asked the question 'why does an animal do this?' These questions, about physiology, development, evolution, and function, became known as 'Tinbergen's four whys'. But Niko's successes came at a price - severe and devastating depressions that were to plague him throughout his career. In this fascinating and engaging story, Niko's long-time friend and student Hans Kruuk argues that his impact as a scientist and naturalist was in large part due to his skills as a communicator, photographer, and film-maker. Niko's Nature is an intimate and insightful portrait of an extraordinary figure.

If you have PCOS get this book!.......2006-09-22
Get this book if you have PCOS, even if you are not TTC it will answer every question you ever had about PCOS. It is a really great read and I suggest you get it. I also bought the Insulin Resistance Diet book, because it helps with the symptoms of PCOS.
Excellent for Anyone with PCOS that is Trying to Conceive.......2005-06-13
I would highly recommend this book to anyone with PCOS that is trying to conceive. It is full of great information. She doesn't just give the technical information, but talks about the emotional aspect of coping with infertility. I love all of the books that I have read by Colette Harris.
Informative, but not so helpful.......2005-04-26
This book was very informative to me, but I think the research is a little old. While it helped me learn more about the disorder, the programs it suggested didn't help regulate me.
Best Book About PCOS thus Far!!!!.......2005-04-23
I have read both this book and "PCOS Dietbook" by Coletter Harris and found that this book really helped answer many questions I have about PCOS. My husband read this book when I was done with it and now he understands exactly what PCOS is and what you can do to help your fertility. I really enjoyed this book because it talks about miscarriages in PCOS women. All of the other books I have read just mention miscarriages. This book descirbes exactly what causes miscariages in PCOS women. It really made me understand what I can do to help lower the risks of miscariage!!
THIS IS A MUST HAVE!!!
PCoS and Your Fertility.......2005-04-20
Sorry but I disagree with the last review. This is an area in which there have been few books to help women. My wife have found this book to be extremely informative and it has anwered some of those niggling questions that have come up in the last few months as she has been facing difficulties through PCoS. The first book was a good general read and this book has given her further infomration that she can use and that I can support her with. I didn't know anything about PCoS before. We can both work together to combat this more effectively. I have promised to try to help her with the suggested recipes and hope that with the author's help we can move forward. Thank you!

Customer Reviews:
great summary of business basics.......2006-12-13
I found this book to be quite a wake-up call to the realities of home-based business. The author covers material related to managing a business like taxes, insurance, time management, how to handle money, and a bunch of other stuff, and he doesn't apologize for the realistic picture he paints. The only criticism I would make is that it's a little short on information about marketing crafts. Discussions of craft shows, wholesaling, internet marketing, and so forth are very briefly discussed in the final chapter.
everything i needed to know.......2002-12-13
in starting my craft business, this book proved invaluable. he covers how to tell if you are a good fit for a home-based business, how to set up your bookkeeping (the biggest help for me), and how to track and analyze your production processes. definitely recommended if you are thinking about moving from amateur crafter to gettin paid.
Good general overview.......2000-08-30
Simply put, this an easy to read book for one considering entering the craft field as a business and not just as a hobby. Kenn discusses the pros and cons of such a decision and encourages one to think carefully before starting a home-based business. He outlines managerial, financial and marketing templates for the artisan. The material is exact and full of useful tips and pitfalls to avoid. Anyone starting a home-based business should read his steps and make sure to follow his processes.
The book is not written with an MBA viewpoint but rather from a down-to-earth and straightforward one. He uses his past experiences to help the business neophyte enter this exciting world. His advice is sound and the templates are practical for anyone starting a home-based business.
Regardless, this style leaves one wanting more craft specific details. While Kenn started his own craft business, it is not until the later chapters that there is craft specific advice. This book could do well for any home-based business. See his other titles for proof.
We had hoped that future editions would include all of the business templates in popular electronic formats like Word, Excel or better yet HTML; but still nothing. Finally, we really like the new updated web and internet tips. See http://www.ijudy.com/ for more details.

Customer Reviews:
A great book for the novice project manager.......2003-09-20
A great book for the novice project manager and a good refresher course for those of us who are already doing it. There's more to project management than just drawing Gantt charts. This book touches all aspects of project management, shows you how to deal with the people, politics and risks of the job. This book is probably the best of the lower priced project management books. My only complaint is that this book has 3 inches of margins, but I still think this book would be a bargain at twice the cost.

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive (though not original).......2003-08-14
This book covers the basics of contemporary thought about time management. The author summarizes and explains many tips and tactics that are available elsewhere: however, if you only want to read one or two time management books, this one is better than many in the crowded genre. Some reviewers have complained about the format -- similar in layout to the "Idiot's Guide" and "Dummies" series -- but many readers find that headlines and sample quotes are easier to read and skim than more tightly packed text. I'm a Ph.D. psychologist who coaches academics and mid-career professionals, and for my work I've read dozens of time management books. This is a reasonable, although not stellar, addition to the pack.
Basic Information Spread Out Over 327 Pages.......2003-07-21
My tip for time management is to skip this book. Assuming that one reads at about one page per minute, it's difficult to believe that one could recoup the five to six hours invested in reading this long-winded, tired, poorly written, poorly organized book in saved time. The time management pointers are very basic, and have been written about many times [this book is essentially a 'compilation' (to be polite) of past research]; the author (Marshall Cook) seems to 'borrow' liberally from many sources, and particularly from Stephen Covey's far superior '7 Habits of Highly Effective People'. I recommend '7 Habits' or Brian Tracy's 'Eat That Frog' -- a short (113 page), easy-to-read book that gives better information, but can be read in an hour or so.
Layout not very efficient........2001-12-11
If you can stop and examine your daily practices and how they use your time - then change the way you act, don't buy this book. There weren't very many pointers that I couldn't have come up on my own.
In addition, the layout is awful. What's the point of justifying the text two inches away from the edge of the paper with quotes from the text that you are reading. There is a page summarizing what is coming up in front of every section. All of the distractions don't allow you to read it in a very timely manner. Kind of ironic. Find another time management book.
Solid, thorough material.......2000-01-21
This book was thoroughly reserched. By the way, Steven Covey didn't invent the urgent/important issue and therefore is not the primary source. Likewise for the Richard Carlson comments. The urgent/important issue appears in EVERY good time management book and at this point is common knowledge. There is much original material in this book. As a professional writer, I know the author didn't violate any laws, so don't worry about it.
A Highway Robbery.......1999-05-28
I picked up this book in nearby Borders bookstore. It looked great at first sight. And it is a good book. Most time management books are based on some strong philosophies of the authors and may be one-sided in some sense. This book emphasizes that the time management is personal, and introduces (very well) all kinds of time management philosophies and methods. The only problem that I had with this book was that the author, Marshall Cook, a professor in Univ of Wisc., did not give any credits / references to the originators. Well, while stealing from one is called as plagiarism, stealing from many is called as research. However, don't the research papers even have references in the end (to specify where they stole the ideas) ? For example, in chapter 9 of the book, the author categorizes life's activities: urgent and important, important but not urgent, urgent but not important, neither important nor urgent. But isn't this originated from the famous Covey's book ? Also, the book uses the same example in Covey's book too. There are other ideas in the book that I saw in other books (for example, the idea of "living in the moment" from Richard Carlson's book). And there is no credit given or any references in the end. Only if all the credits and references were given properly, this book could have been a great (and possibly one of the most useful and practical) time management book.
If you want a good collection of ideas/methods of time management that are "highway robbed" from many other books, this book is highly recommended.
Customer Reviews:
A bit jumpy.......2007-06-28
I am currently using this textbook for my History from 1460-1877 online and find that this book is very detailed. There are a lot of details in this book that I have not had in any other history book. The American Promise focuses on some certain historical times, places and people that have been a bit looked over in other books. The only problem I have come across with this textbook is that you have to go back and forth quite a bit to cross-reference. It seems some information may be lacking and the book itself is trying to get too many details instead of focusing on the larger picture of some things or just skipping over some major historical times.
Comprehensive History 1 Textbook.......2005-09-13
I really like this textbook because it presents the material in a way that I can easily grasp and remember. Past history books have bored me, but this one isn't too bad :) It's also great that it's in paperback because that makes it cheaper!

Needed for a class, found it put together very well.......2007-05-02
As far as textbooks go, it was the formatting that make it what it is. Lots of pictures & primary sources compliment the information being covered in the text. Makes it not as boring a read as most history books. You actually find yourself reading all the little extras.
What makes this series truly great? The fact that they give you a choice on book format to purchase. In a college this textbook would be for a US history 1 & 2. You can chose to purchase the expensive and heavy Hardback if you know you are going to take both parts. Or you can buy a softback of Vol 1 or Vol 2, depending on which class you are enrolled in.
As an adult student, who only recently returned after over 10 year gap I had no reason to want to buy the big textbook. Already had US History 1 credits from the last time around. Through Amazon.com I was able to find the correct edition of the book, while the college bookstore refused to carry it!
Thankful that Amazon.com exists. :)

Narative Textbook.......2005-10-14
Although "Roark seems to emphasize some events that seem less important to U. S. History" as Mr. Jack A. White stated, this book is written in the narrative stand point. Therefore, it should be read more like a story and not a textbook. If you're using this book in high school, it will be good practice since more college books are narrative.
The American Promise, Volumes 1 and 2.......2000-04-11
This book omits several important events in U. S. History up to 1865. But is sufficient for introductory classes in U. S. History. While it does a sufficient job as a survey source, it is not recommended for an in-depth study of any period in U. S. History. Further, Roark seems to emphasize some events that seem less important to U. S. History.
Very well written........1999-07-23

good summaries of many key events and trends.......2005-08-25
The book is called a compact edition because it tries to encompass a vast scope in a relatively slim 800 pages. It covers a time when the US struggled to patch itself together after the Civil War, to its emergence as a global power by 1900. And thence into intervening crucially and decisively in two world wars. Plus the protracted struggle of the Cold War.
What this means, for example, is that the discussion of the US in the world wars is necessarily abbreviated. Little detail about battles like Midway and Leyte Gulf, except, more or less, to say that they occurred. Instead, the book devotes considerable space to the home front - the domestic American experience of war.
It does offer an interesting coverage of the sinking of the Maine, which precipitated the Spanish-American War. The US went to war, blaming Spain for the sinking. But within a few years, that view fell out of favour in the US, with an inquiry concluding that the sinking was accidental. Indeed, most current history books that cover the period offer this as the explanation. However, the book points out another inquiry, decades later, by Adm Rickover, that suggested terrorism. It says that whatever contemporary view might be held also reflects the events of the current period.
The most recent events covered by the book are the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001. The book was printed shortly thereafter, and little substantive could be added about the events and their consequences.
too left-wing.......2003-12-09
Gets more and more biased the closer it gets to present. Way too much space is devoted to protest movements. Whole book takes the stance that more government is needed for redistribution of wealth without offering other viewpoints.
For instance, The section on Reagan and Free Enterprise on page 1118 says that the net effect of the Reagan tax cuts was to "make the tax structure more regressive" and "further skew" the distribution of wealth "in favor of the rich". This however does not point out that the rich were still paying a grossly higher percentage of their income than the lower brackets. Or that since the more prosperous pay a higher percentages and a far larger overall amount this makes them entitled to recieve a higher percentage or amount back. The book makes it sound like the tax cuts were stealing from the poor to give to the rich when the government was just allowing people to keep a large % of their income.
While I thought Volume I (before 1877) was good the authors really need to lay off the politics in Volume II
Book Description
The Politics of Method in the Human Sciences provides a remarkable comparative assessment of the variations of positivism and alternative epistemologies in the contemporary human sciences. Often declared obsolete, positivism is alive and well in a number of the fields; in others, its influence is significantly diminished. The essays in this collection investigate its mutations in form and degree across the social science disciplines. Looking at methodological assumptions field by field, individual essays address anthropology, area studies, economics, history, the philosophy of science, political science and political theory, and sociology. Essayists trace disciplinary developments through the long twentieth century, focusing on the decades since World War II.
Contributors explore and contrast some of the major alternatives to positivist epistemologies, including Marxism, psychoanalysis, poststructuralism, narrative theory, and actor-network theory. Almost all the essays are written by well-known practitioners of the fields discussed. Some essayists approach positivism and anti-positivism via close readings of texts influential in their respective disciplines. Some engage in ethnographies of the present-day human sciences; others are more historical in method. All of them critique contemporary social scientific practice. Together, they trace a trajectory of thought and method running from the past through the present and pointing toward possible futures.
Contributors. Nothing short of first-rate.......1999-08-03
For anyone interested in the background, impact, and future of the Pick-Sloan Plan, you need look no further than Lawson's aptly titled "Dammed Indians". The tribes from Gavins Point Dam near Yankton, SD to Ft. Peck Dam in Montana have all been adversely affected with the damming of the Missouri River, a truth which Lawson documents with precision and skill. Originally a Ph.D. dissertation written in the history department at the University of New Mexico, Lawson is a fine example of some of the many outstanding American West historians who have come out of that institution.

Book Description
"The grisly procession of dead had grown alarmingly...men who had endured the terrible ordeal of Bataan, who were 10,000 miles from home, and who then died in the most miserable conditions. For me, as a doctor, the most distressing thought was that they could have been saved, almost without exception, by proper diet and medical care." Imprisoned by the Japanese in 1942, Lieutenant John Bumgarner, U.S. Army Medical Corps, attempted to care for the survivors of the Bataan Death March. A lack of medical supplies, coupled with poor diet and unsanitary living conditions, made the task virtually impossible. Dr. Bumgarner was imprisoned until the Japanese surrender in 1945, all the while attending to his fellow prisoners of war who often had little chance of survival. His powerful story is a strong reminder of the brutality of war and captivity.

repeating.......2002-10-15
An interesting book although a little short on pages. He tends to repeat himself rather a lot and there is little character building of people he talks of. One was not left with the real feel of camp life.
holy smokes.......2000-02-14
Just finished the book, and it's pretty hard to put into words what I feel. If I were Japanese, I would be ashamed, humiliated, and very concerned that my culture could/?can reach the depths of depravity that Dr. Bumgarner so matter-of-factly describes. The treatment of their POWs is almost beyond belief, as is the fact that any of the prisoners survived at all. The book is well-written and engrossing, with a physician's eye for detail. No exaggeration nor hyperbole creeps in -- none are needed -- the story speaks for itself. You'll read the book and wonder "Could I have lived through this?" I'm sure it was not pleasant for the author to dredge up these remarkably clear memories and write about them, but we owe him a debt of gratitude for doing so.
