I thought "The Zookeeper's Daughter" was is a refreshing tale of the real life experiences of a strong woman. It was a book that I could relate to. It deals with life and death and the joy of what comes inbetween. It is a must read

Well...I'm not sure about seconds...........2007-09-03
...because each recipe I've looked at so far all take at least an hour for prep time and cook time. And I'm not talking about all the ingredients your meant to compile...I'm sure the author means well, but these recipes are fairly complicated, and I am an accomplished cook. I can see where they would turn off someone who is not too keen in the kitchen. Also, each recipe is for four servings! What to do if I'm the only one on the diet?
Luckily, I also bought ZonePerfect by Kristi Walker. Her recipes are for one and even come with pictures! Hooray!

I would have to say that this book is good but if you want recipies for the diet find another book. there are a limited number of recipies in general and if you are a pickey eater or don't like a certain type of food i would reccommend getting another zone book.

I was looking for ideas for feeding my family and keeping all of us in the zone. this is it. Also has good discriptions (what they are, where to find them) of some basic ingredients that are used a lot in the zone. Good info to help get your kitchen stocked. Yummy recipes.

John Carroll and Virginia Rainy have done a marvelous job on the California the Beautiful Cookbook. The book is an excellent addition to anyone's coffee-table collection, as well as an inspiring work for the moderately experienced cook. John has spent years as a personal chef in California - his experience, excellent taste, and personal warmth are infused in this wonderful cookbook. His recipes are practical and incredibly delicious. My personal favorite is the crab-salad sandwich on sourdough, I've served it to many guests and always with rave reviews. This cookbook is divided into regions of California. In becoming acquainted with the book you are becoming acquainted with the culinary traditions of a myriad of cultures and flavors. This is a must-have cookbook for the serious collector - I can't believe it's out of print - do yourself a favor and find a used copy of California the Beautiful, a cookbook you will use and enjoy over and over again!

How cats are made is a mysterious process. Of course, to be astonishingly mysterious is one of the 201 instructions for cats in this delightful little book by Leigh Rutledge. These are the instructions which every cat should know, and every cat person should realise. Some are conventional cat wisdom (which, ironically, is often the least understood or apparent). Others are inventive and new.
Sometimes the instructions come in three's:
+ Stay out of the rain
+ Stay out of the snow
+ Stay out of the clothes dryer
and
+ Be bold.
+ Be winsome.
+ Be wildly tender.
From the start to the finish, this book is a cute, tender, touching collection of aphorisms, ostensibly intended for cats (but they really don't seem to need this kind of instruction), but really for human beings who live with and around cats to both better understand the cats, and better understand themselves. There is implicit wisdom in some of the things that cats do, and some wisdom for us to follow:
+ Chase, but don't hurt, butterflies.
+ No matter how old you are, never be afraid to express the kitten within you.
+ Remember that foxes, skunks, and owls usually have the last word in any confrontation.
How could I not fall in love with a book authored by a man with 28 cats (and people thought my four or five were excessive!) who is said to rescue them from storm sewers, interstate highways (my cat Silver came from such a place) and other such harrowing places?
The sayings are memorable and true; the graphics are adorable and fun. This book makes a good gift for a friend, and a good treat for oneself, almost as good as catnip for human beings!

I could add instruction number 202..."always try to lay across the keyboard when someone is typing, if that doesn't work, attack the ankles under the desk." This is a cat's book of proper feline ettiquette. It is funny and will make you smile when you recognize your own cats within its pages. It's a nice compact volume, just 4" x 6", and might make a good gift the next time your cat incessantly bangs on the bedroom door after you and your partner have discreetly closed it for privacy's sake. This book shows that there's an art to being a cat, but it's a spiritual calling to be a cat lover.

I purchased this book to use for crafts that I make. It has a nice selection of patterns, many which would look especially nice on totes. I used one of them to paint a design on my sliding glass door, which prevents me from running into it. :o) My only disappointment is that permission is not granted to use the patterns on crafters items that are sold at craft sales, which is what I would like to do. Other than that, it is a wonderful book with excellent patterns and ideas to use in making gifts or for decorating. It would also be useful for teachers who need patterns to enlarge for bulletin board ideas. The patterns could be copied onto a transparency.

If you're just starting out crafting or you are looking for projects to do with children then this would be a great book for you. The ideas are well explained and very simple, there are tons of pictures (both in black & white and in colour), the patterns are all full-sized, but it wouldn't be too exciting or different for an advanced craftsperson looking for a challenging project.

As a parent of two ADHD kids (now grown) and an ADD Coach, I found this book to be a wonderful resource and help to plan various behavioral stratagies. There are 46 different behaviors listed that are common to those kids with ADD/ADHD. Each behavior is broken down into step by step pratical stratagies. The Appendix also includes sample schedules, reward menus, recordkeeping charts, behavior contracts, etc.
It covers in detail SIMPLE stratagies (but not always EASY as DEALING with kids of ADD/ADHD is not always easy) of the 3 basic characteristics of ADHD: Inattentive, Impulsive, and Hyperacitve. A virtual recipe book of parenting skills.
Some of the behaviors this book give stratagies for are:
Does not listen to what others are saying.
Needs questions and directions repeated.
Is disorganized with possessions.
Has difficulty concentrating.
Does not remain on task to do homework.
"Forgets" to do things.
Starts but does not complete homework.
Will not independently perform chores.
Cannot organize responsibilities.
Refuses to do what he/she is told, goes on doing what he/she was doing, does the opposite of what he/she is told, etc.
Interrups others.
Is impulsive.
Is easily frustrated.
Intrudes on others.
Is easily angered, annoyed, or upset.
Ignores consequences of behavior.
Fidgets, squirms, etc.
Appears restless.
Cannot adjust behavior to different situations.
Runs in the mall, pushes and makes noises in line, yess in stores, etc.
I frequently used the information from this book over the years as a parent and as an ADD Coach. Hawthorne also puts out similar format of book for adolescents and adults with ADD/ADHD.

The author did a very good job portraying the life of Peter Paul Rubens from a young Flemish painter in search of a teacher, he struck out for Italy. He develops and refines a style that is a blend of the Northern and Southern European painting styles, Rubens had a head for business also, unlike many other artists of the time. He disdained the court intrigues and being captive to a powerful patron. Ruben's plan was very modern, he set up a palatial house in Antwerp to attract the best art students as apprentices. These apprentices would rough out paintings for Rubens to finish, greatly expanding his output. His house also became a place to entertain the wealthy customers, and as a locale for his art collection. As the most renowned and prodigious artist of his time, Rubens invested his wealth into a huge art collection. True to his business class ideal, in the midst of Europe's religious conflict, The Thirty Years War, his religion changed with convenience. Another side of Rubens is that because of his contacts and traveling he actually became involved in diplomatic intrigues carrying secret messages to the movers and shakers of the Thirty Years War, under the guise of painting their portraits. The author is to be commended on this text. She cites many sources especially about Rubens style and technique, besides herown opinion. The author includes insights into personal life gained mainly through his personal correspondence.
