    Book Description

Private Jack Poolton was among the Canadians landing at the disastrous raid on Dieppe. Fortunate to have survived, Jack was taken to a prisoner of war camp in Germany. In Destined to Survive: A Dieppe Veteran's Story, Jack Poolton relates the story of his training, capture, and experiences in the POW camp. We follow Jack's three escape attempts, and his subsequent punishment. And we share his elation when Jack and his fellow prisoners are liberated by American soldiers. Poolton and the other POWs never lost their desire to escape. Throughout the ordeal, Jack dreamed of one day celebrating the end of the war, and an allied victory. He eventually celebrated V-E Day in England. Written as a tribute to the fifty-fifth anniversary of the Dieppe Raid, Destined to Survive is an extraordinary contribution to Canadian military history. Poolton's honest prose reveals the emotions of a man devoted to King and country, and determined to survive at all costs. The gripping account brings the reader to a new understanding about soldiers, prisoners, and war.

5 out of 5 stars A must for armchair Mayanists.......2007-07-27

Ian Graham's intelligent and accessible biography of the great Mayanist Alfred Maudslay is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of archaeology in the Maya region. Graham helps you see the difficulty and cost, both financial and personal, that this kind of obsession creates, making Maudslay's work that much more compelling. The only downside (smile) to reading this book is that you may be forced (forced!) as I was, to find a decent and expensive copy of the Maudslay archaeology volumes of Biologia Centrali-Americana, which becomes a must-have, once you've read Graham.

5 out of 5 stars A portrait of Alfred Maudslay.......2003-03-02

A long overdue biography of the great mayanist traveller, explorer and early archaeologist. Graham does a good job of weaving together information from personal interviews, letters, journals and notes. I found it a highly readable and informative account of his life and accomplishments. It lends a human touch to a name which comes up over and over in reading on the ancient Maya. It also provides a fascinating early travelogue of central america 50 years after Stephens and Catherwood. Graham has a keen appreciation of the challenges Maudslay faced in his self appointed task of recording as many mayan monuments and inscriptions as he could, a career path which indeed echoes his own.

      Book Description

A New York Times reporter's eye-opening call to arms in the fight against epidemic diseases

We face a great choice. Philip Hilts, a prizewinning journalist for the New York Times and the Washington Post, argues in this report on global epidemic diseases that the world's leading nations now have the means to win the fight against “the coming plague”—but they must act quickly or face grave consequences. Based on firsthand visits to disease hot spots around the world and in-depth interviews with leading researchers and other medical pioneers working on the ground, who are the major forces pushing for a coordinated world campaign, Hilts tells the inspiring stories of remarkably simple but powerful new approaches that are leading to astonishing success.

      Customer Reviews:

Hilts shows why the reader should care about clobal health and how it effects our lives world wide with overall increase in goods, drugs and general welfare of the people around the world.

2 out of 5 stars superficial and glossy .......2005-12-20

Rx for Survival presents a media-friendly perspective of what makes a difference in international development and health. While some of the historical perspective is interesting and useful, the general presentation is facile, missing the importance of government actions, of human rights principles, and of community-based organizations in the identification and response to the diseases presented.

Hilts writes: "In science the couplings of love are sometimes expressed in mathematical models. They are like fluid flows, or combusition spreading." This kind of rhetoric is everywhere and doesn't do much to spread an understanding of the diseases, or the successful response to them, that the author intends.

5 out of 5 stars Good overview, light on details........2005-11-01

In a remarkably "optimistic" account of four medical crises - diarrohea (Bangladesh), polio (India), night blindness (Nepal) and AIDS (Botswana), Hilts looks at some of the unique features that enabled low-cost efforts to attain incredible results. The aim of the book is essentially to highlight that major medical problems do not necessarily need the huge amount of resources most seem to think are required. In each of the four 'stories', Hilts provides some unique characteristics of the volunteer projects - their conception, initial implementation, lessons learnt in a very easy-to-read engaging narration. An excellent book with no jarring political biases (surprising, since one would expect a PBS book to have some liberal leanings). A comprehensive list of volunteer organizations is also available as an appendix. A good read.

          Book Description

The state of Veracruz, a lush strip of land running the length of Mexico's eastern coast, is home to some of the easiest, lightest, and most varied food in Mexico's repertoire. To enjoy dishes like Seafood Salad in Avocado Halves, Garlicky Stir-Fried Shrimp, Orange-Flavored Chicken, and Mushroom Empanadas, you won't need to hunt down obscure chiles or master complicated techniques. Spanish influences evident in accessible ingredients like olive oil, olives, capers, raisins, and almonds give the state's cuisine a familiar Mediterranean character. At the same time, Veracruz's Caribbean orientation and powerful Afro-Cuban legacy offer plenty of choices for cooks who want kitchen adventure. In all, Zarela provides more than 150 choices, perfect for festive parties or ordinary suppers. Much more than a cookbook, Zarela's Veracruz is a mesmerizing travelogue and an absorbing portrait of Mexico's most exuberant state.

The food is great, recipes easy enough to follow, and style engaging. She conveys the cultural and geographical background of what is being cooked, which make the reading fun.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful cook book.......2007-03-09

From simple to more complicated, this book takes the reader into fine Mexican cooking. I enjoy reading it for the fun of it as well as for finding practical meals.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating reading, wonderful recipes........2006-07-12

If you think Mexican cooking is all refried beans and tacos, think again. This book will introduce you to the coastal cuisine of Veracruz, where Spanish, Caribbean, and Mediterranean influences all can be found. A long introduction to the region, cooking, and people of Veracruz precede the recipes, which include everything from appetizers and small plates to dessets, beverages, rice and of course seafood and meat.

Some dishes are simplicity themselves, such as the wonderful Peppered Shrimp. Others are much more involved and complicated, such as the Stuffed Boned Chicken Legs. Still, if you are truly interested in learning about a wonderful and often overlooked cuisine, there is no better Mexican cookbook I've found yet that contained so many delicious and different recipes. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The best of coastal Mexico.......2004-11-15

Mexican chef and New York restaurateur, Zarela has very decided and exacting ideas about food. She came late to the cuisine of coastal Veracruz, thinking it too touristy and modern for her taste. But she has come to love the place and opens her book with a culinary driving tour of the region, discussing terrain, local ingredients and the best restaurants. The recipes make plentiful use of seafood, various chilies, corn, beans, tomatoes, citrus and avocado.

From Almond Soup to Shrimp Salad to Totonac-Style Beans with Pumpkin Seeds to Shredded Chicken in Blackberry Liqueur Sauce, Zarela insists on fresh herbs, painstaking preparations and the finest ingredients (which she often laments of finding in the U.S.). Dishes range from simple to elaborate (more time-consuming than complicated); the photographs of the region and the food are beautiful, and Zarela's directions are clear. This is Mexican food at its finest.

          Book Description

With two celebrated restaurants and two highly acclaimed cookbooks to her name, Zarela Martínez is considered one of America's foremost authorities on Mexican cooking. In this book, the companion to her thirteen-part public television series, Zarela takes us on a tour of the Mexican state of Veracruz, a lush, skinny strip of land bordering the Gulf and home to some of Mexico's most accessible and inviting dishes.
It was here that the Spanish first landed in the sixteenth century, and sustained Spanish influences give the food an easygoing Mediterranean character that is appealing even to people who don't normally like "Mexican" food. Olive oil, olives, capers, raisins, and almonds are common in simply prepared dinners, while complex blends of difficult-to-find chiles and other spices are largely absent. The state's 450-mile-long coastline is broken up everywhere by waterways teeming with shellfish. As a result, there is a wealth of little dishes that involve nothing more than some seafood, olive oil, and garlic with a handful of seasonings: wonderful soup-stews, fresh fillets stuffed with seafood mélanges, appetizers such as Shrimp Salad in Avocado Halves and Garlickly Stir-Fried Shrimp, and the state's most famous dish, red snapper a la veracruzana.
At the same time, Veracruz's strong Caribbean orientation and powerful Afro-Cuban legacy offer plenty of choices for cooks who want kitchen adventure. The Veracruzan table also features innumerable variations on tortillas that make wonderful little meals.
In all, Zarela provides more than 150 dishes that are perfect for parties or even ordinary suppers: Crab and Avocado Salad, Orange-Flavored Chicken, Wild Mushrooms in Vinaigrette, and Coconut Layer Cake.
Much more than a cookbook, ZARELA'S VERACRUZ is also a mesmerizing travelogue and an absorbing portrait of Mexico's most exuberant state.

          5 out of 5 stars It's not another Tex-Mex wannabe book.......2002-06-03

Zarela Martinez is one of my favorite authors of Mexican cookbooks. I have searched at great length to find books of Mexican cooking which are authentic, and not adapted to suit American palates. The cuisine of Veracruz is really varied and due to influences from Mexico, Africa, and the Caribbean. Most of the recipes in this book are not what one would think of as stereotypically Mexican. This makes a great armchair read, but the recipes are delicious, especially the shrimp marinated in beer and cooked with a chipotle chile paste. Out of this world!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Luscious Fusion of Mexican, Spanish & Caribbean.......2001-09-24

What a marvelous cookbook. With worthy introduction of the region of Veracruz and its culinary traditions and their influences, this book not only provides wonderful, unique recipes but accents them with the cultural flavor from which they originate.

The sub-title says what this cookbook is about well: Cooking and Culture in Mexico's Tropical Melting Pot. Also, a great section and the ingredients, their purchase and preparation.

The recipes are just wonderful! Tried the Tostadas with Hashed Crab, Masa-Sweet Potato Shells with Fillings, Santa Maria's Chicken Soup with Noodles, Shredded Chicken in Blackberry Liquor Sauce, Moors and Christians (black beans and white rice).

These are most delightful, easy to prepare and gorgeous and exciting to offer guest diners. This is a great cookbook to add to those who enjoy Latin-Caribbean style cooking. It's all here, with great color photos and well done recipes.

If you ever want to just put the world and its horrific visions aside for a mental/emotional therapeutic hour or so, get Diane Arrington's new book, epublished and amazingly economical in both editions, the electronic and paperback.
Since 1975, this insightful and prolific author has been sharing her concepts and dreams with readers. However, Seventh Sense is unique in its superbly written accounts of events between animals and people and animals, even dogs and ducks. The mental images will make for countless moments of reverie when the pressures of life become unbearable. Its forty-six fascinating chapter-stories of people/animal adventures are crowned, for my mind, by Chapter 46, the story of Sandy and Waldo, a dog and a duck, whose reunion could bring tears from the hearts of the most cynical among us. Throughout it, the author avoided making "monkeys" out of the pets' owners, showing that her compassion knows no bounds. Get it, then leave it on the coffee table for a fast-fix from stress. (If only animals could read... we'd all be out of business.)

Sixty-year-old Elliot Gilbert died mysteriously within twenty-four hours of checking into a hospital for routine prostate surgery. Wrongful Death is his widow's account of one family's experience with a type of medical disaster that occurs all too frequently but is rarely discussed in public policy debates focussed on growing costs and exorbitant lawyer fees.

5 out of 5 stars She's a poet and very good with words.......2004-07-15

It was negligence, or the university regents would not have paid the settlement. I've not reviewed a book here before, but wanted to counter some of the unfair reviews I just read. We know this kind of thing happens sometimes. She lost the love of her life, and their children lost their father. Ms. Gilbert needed to write this, and it is well worth reading. It is, however, very sad.

                5 out of 5 stars Insight.......2004-03-02

This book accurately reflects the emotions and disorientation experienced by the loved ones of a patient who suffers a sudden, unexpected and - at least in their belief - preventable death. I'm not going to debate the medical merits with the first reviewer, no doubt a physician. But after 20 years of representing malpractice victims in legal proceedings, I can say it truly reflects their pain and their motivation in seeking legal counsel in a death case: A desire for information, honesty and validation. The book also addresses how the legal system can be a crud tool for achieving those goals - but the only tool they have.

                1 out of 5 stars Wrongful Conclusions.......2003-05-27

Sandra Gilbert's poignant tale of her 60 year old husband's death after prostate cancer surgery is marred by her universally distorted portrayal of his doctors at the UC Davis University Hospital, where he died in 1991. While she freely and repeatedly demonstrates her ignorance and lack of sophistication regarding the medical issues involved in her husband's case, that doesn't stop her from treating her misunderstandings and fantasies as reality. From her point of view, you would think that her husband's physicians were callous monsters, who didn't care if he lived or died. The truth is far less nefarious, though probably for her, less satisfying.

In the end, the real events surrounding her husband's death do not reveal any conspiracy, cover-up, or gross negligence. In fact, her husband suddenly "crashed" only after what was essentially over 4 uneventful hours in the recovery room, where the only abnormality was a low grade elevated heart rate (common after surgery) and a one time drop in blood pressure early on, which responded immediately to appropriate treatment (also common). Indeed, until he coded, he appeared to be doing quite well. It is only after the failed resuscitation that it became apparent that he must have been bleeding occultly, despite his apparent hemodynamic stability. The bottom line is that everyone in the recovery room missed the fact that that he was hemorrhaging internally, not because they were indifferent or incompetent, but because the clues were so subtle and their level of suspicion was too low.

She complains that no one was forthcoming with information, as she struggled to understand what happened, yet, with her own words, whenever the primary surgeon tries to discuss the case, before and after the surgery, she demonstrates that she has trouble understanding the simplest concepts, even though he speaks in plain everyday language. Instead, she offensively ridicules his accent, and follows every statement of his with her own italicized confused thoughts and fantasies. Almost every statement or appearance of a physician in this book is caricatured and editorialized.

In the end, she opts to take the money, accepting a settlement, rather than continue with depositions and go to trial, insuring that she never gets the explanation she claims she wants and needs so badly.

If there are villains here it is her friends and family. For example, after her husband's death, a couple comes up to her and with the same breath as they ask "What happened?", they announce that a lawyer friend has told them that she has a case for medical malpractice. How in the world would he know? There are so many self-appointed "experts" among her relatives and acquaintances, all whispering in her ear their own theories and rumors and offering advice. And there is so much cynicism and anger among her family and friends toward the doctors, you would have thought they had bodily thrown her husband out a hospital window to his death. Indeed, that is how his care is ultimately described.

There is much made of a missing hematocrit, drawn after an hour in the recovery room, yet it is acknowledged that hematocrits can be misleading because of the time required for "equilibration." She also makes much of an inability of the anesthesiologists to intubate her husband, which aborted the first attempt at surgery. His pictures in the book show him to have been a stocky man with a receding chin, short neck, and full beard. Of course they had trouble! There is no guarantee that you can successfully intubate any patient, even if you know ahead of time it will be difficult. They did the right and safe thing, by canceling the case, yet she repeatedly revisits the failed intubation and prudently cancelled case, each time more vehemently, until she ultimately claims her husband began to die then and there!

Mrs. Gilbert revels in the role of victim, but like so many that title becomes comforting only if there are villains. And if there are none, she and her family, friends, and lawyers will manufacture them. Indeed, mistakes were made, with disastrous consequences, but there is no evidence that her late husband was treated with anything but professional kindness, charity, and compassion. Maybe his doctors deserve a little too.

1 out of 5 stars Not about Wrongful Death, but about dealing with death.......2000-09-29

This book is hardly about wrongful death. It is the story of one person's attempt to deal with the sudden and unexpected death of a spouse. Certainly there are some elements of the wrongfullness of the death of her husband portrayed in the book. However, the author is primarily focused on her own pain, suffering and inability to deal with the death and subsequent activities.

One most definitely has sympathy with the author and her family for their loss. The writing is a celebration of the misery brought on by the death. A similar tale could be told of any sudden and unexpected death of a loved one.

5 out of 5 stars Our Mother Believed the Doctor Could Do No Wrong.......2000-02-04

Our mother was diagnosed in the late 80's with the worse types of rheumatory arthritis ever and began walking with a cane as her primary complaint was the pain in her right hip. She was also an adamant smoker and in Dec. 97 was diagnosed with a cancerous spot on her lung. Her doctor wanted to do surgery stating she wasn't going to die; all the time ignoring her repeat requests for attention to her hip. He stated he wanted to take care of the problem at hand then he would deal with the hip. The middle of Feb 98 she expired and was, by the grace of God, brought back to life. Consequently, it was all over, as her hip bone was completely eaten up when they discovered bone cancer as it had matasized all through her body. She passed the 19th of Mar 98. During the first discovery of the cancer the doctor did an MRI and through the latter part of her life, kept ignoring repeated requests to deal with that hip. She suffered through this cancer thinking it was arithritis. A major part of the illness was pneumonia and continuous upper respiratory infections. I must mention that I live in Ga. and the other 5 siblings in Va and Md. Mother live in Pa. and would not move as she loved Pa. Of course, this made it difficult to track her and assist her in monitoring her visits to the doctor. Mother was always the type of woman who like to keep her "business" to herself; always an organized person. We have since tried, to no avail, to get an attorney to prove his negligence. I am still looking for someone to go over, verbatim, her medical records. To my knowledge, there has been no mention of her need to quit smoking. We, the family, also believe we have a case against the cigarette company.

                    Book Description

Caroline Petigru Carson (1820-1892), the elder daughter of Charleston intellectual James Louis Petigru and sister of the novelist Susan Petigru King, seemed destined from birth for life as a southern plantation mistress. Yet, like her sister, Carson challenged the conventions of nineteenth-century Charleston and defied traditional expectations by living apart from her husband and later as a very merry widow. Like her father unwilling to support secession, Carson, a staunch Unionist, left her native South Carolina at the onset of the Civil War. She settled first in New York and then, a decade later, in Rome among the prestigious social circles for which her background and bearing fitted her. In both locales she created for herself the life of an artist and southern expatriate.

From Italy, Carson wrote hundreds of discursive letters to her younger son in America. Gathered in this collection, these narratives offer intimate insights into the emotional life of a mature woman, the accomplishments of an artist determined both to perfect her craft and sell her work, and the intellectual and social pursuits of a well-educated, vivacious American living abroad.

With painterly eye and incisive pen, Carson vividly portrays both the life she observed and the life she led in Rome. Her letters reverberate with street scenes, riots and demonstrations, secular celebrations of a newly united Italy and traditional religious pageantry, an intense friendship with a Roman duke, and the scandalous lives of her fellow Americans. Interspersed are snatches of conversations with artists, writers, and famous visitors to the Eternal City, many of whom she lured to her weekly salon. Letters written in the summer from Italian, Swiss, and German resorts depict not only the contrasting styles of wealthy American tourists and vacationing European aristocrats but the coastal and mountain scenery that is also pictured in the Carson paintings that are included in this volume.
