THE TRUTH.......2003-12-09

More than anything, Phil tells a story of truth. Very honestly and straight forward, he details the horror of war and the sadness of returning home to a world he loves but somehow, in so many ways, has betrayed him and many 'Nam vets like him. The story must be told for the future. Many veterans are going to be returning home from Iraq and will deserve a more humane homecoming than what Phil and his comrades experienced. Phil has done his best to pave the way for these soldiers. Hopefully, the country will listen and learn from this one soldier's tragic truth.

He Beat The Enemy - Our Own System.......2003-12-09

Phil's book is an inspiration for anyone who has ever fought the 'system'. As it details his fight for recognition and for services, it shows how buried in red tape our government has become. 'Numbers' have become more important than the Veteran themselves.

I am proud to have been with Phil when he received his Bronze Star. It was so refreshing to see the young men and women of that National Guard unit come up and congratulate him, and salute him, on something done 30 years prior.

True American Hero.......2003-11-25

The story told here is one of adventure, heroism and inspiration. One does not need to be a Vet to enjoy every page of this story. Phil has a real talent and I am looking forward to his next book. I haven't enjoyed a non-fiction in quite some time; this book touches on feelings everyone can relate to. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the Vietnam war and the true story of what our men had to endure both on the battlefield and the battle they had to fight once back home with the Veterans Administration. This book will open your eyes to a lot of events most of us never knew anything about.

Time to heal?.......2003-10-25

This book discusses one man's struggle to understand what happened to him in Viet Nam and what happened to him when he returned home, increasingly unable to avoid terrible, debilitating headaches.

A man who loves his wife and family finds himself in terrible trauma, unable to work and turns to the Veterans Administration to get help. He finds some kindness, and much neglect.

As he details his struggle, I cried, laughed and shook my head in dismay.

The ending is both jubilant and sad.

The book is well written and telling. I can imagine the author sitting in my living room telling me the story in his own words and voice.

In Strong Women and Men Beat Arthritis, the team of researchers, headed by Miriam Nelson, Ph.D., presents a home exercise program based on a study of 46 people with severe osteoarthritis of the knee. In four months, the group--who exercised in their homes with easy-to-find equipment--reported 43 percent less pain, 44 percent improved function, and 71 percent increased muscle strength.

The 16-week exercise program starts with a daily half-hour of core exercises and adds intensity and additional exercises after the first month. The program combines strength, aerobic, and flexibility exercises, with the main focus on strength training. You'll need dumbbells, ankle weights, and an exercise step (or staircase). Even newcomers to exercise will find the illustrated instructions simple enough and the level low enough to start immediately.

The program includes a nutritional plan to reduce stiffness and inflammation, emphasizing water, fruits, vegetables, and the right fatty acid ratios. The authors also discuss medications (they work best in combination with exercise and nutrition) and sort through alternative treatments.

This is an excellent work on the alternative medicinal and
conventional medicine protocols for arthritis. Dr. Nelson
mentions various Vit C dietary combinations utilizing
orange juice, strawberries or grapefruit to provide Vit. C.
Next, the authors cite important anti-inflammatory combos;
such as, Omega 3 fish oil and flaxseed oil. Sunflower oil
has the requisite Omega 6 ingredients. Sulfasalazine and
methotrexate are important protocols for treating seronegative
spondylarthropathies. In addition, the lungs, heart and eyes
may be impacted by ankylosing spondylitis and related diseases.
For instance, Iritis may impact the eyes. Calcification of
the heart valves and electronic problems with the heart have
been noted. Decreased lung capacity is another important
resultant of ankylosing spondylitis.

The authors point out that Chronic Juvenile Arthritis stunts
growth. In addition, the SED RATE (sedimentation rate) and
rhematoid factor are the gold standard for blood tests to
detect arthritis. In my own experience, the MOST- micro-oxidative
stress test may be helpful in articulating the yeast component
as an aggravating factor in arthritic conditions.

The authors provide an important series of exercises which
may be helpful for arthritic patients. The physical therapy
training consists of moderate squatting, toe stand
(standing erect on your toes), moderate push-ups by pressing
the wall, back extensions by facing the floor and raising the
head, modified sit-ups, knee extension flexing, full range
motion employing light weights in torque motion, face flat on
the floor raising the back legs, the lunge stretch,
cross-over hips, placing one knee on the chair and standing
upright or erect, shoulder stretches and a host of others.
Dr. Nelson indicates that excess joint fluid is a sign of
inflammation. In addition, surgical intervention can be
helpful. For instance, an artificial joint may last 15-20 years.
Acupuncture helps to stimulate endomorphins and change blood
flow patterns. There is evidence that acupuncture relieves
arthritis, although there is less evidence for Chiropractic.
This book is worth the price. It provides important alternative
medicinal protocols for arthritis as well as classic physical
therapy exercises aimed at preserving joint mobility and
elasticity. I would supplement the exercises with Alpha
Lipoic Acid to enhance bodily elasticity. In my own experience,
Northern Polar magnets may be helpful if strategically placed.

Really seems to help!.......2003-04-22

I was recently diagnosed with knee osteoarthritis, and I started following the nutritional suggestions in this book. I think it's already starting to help! Plus it tells you how to perform strengthening exercises for your aching joints. I am a big fan of Dr. Nelson's other works. I like how she explains the science and the applications. I plan to share this with my mom, who also has osteoarthritis.

No hype, just good, sound information........2002-11-04

I am the kind of person that is not going to buy or "buy into" a book unless it is supported by some reasonable evidence. If you're like me, then you'll love this book. It is based on a study recently conducted at the Tufts University. In short, the study used a program of exercise and nutrition to combat arthritis. The results? Pain was reduced by a whopping 43%!

Key to their program was strengthening exercises which have been shown in other studies as well as being extremely beneficial for arthritis patients. I am very pleased with books like these that offer sound treatments based on research. If you like these kind of books too and also suffer from back pain, I can recommend "The Multifidus Back Pain Solution" (available here at amazon.ca too) that is based on randomized controlled trials and involves only one exercise you do at home that strengthens your multifidus muscles found to be abnormal in many people with back pain. So start reading, start exercising, and start getting better!

Inaccurate - what more can I say?.......2005-12-31

Well, they must not have much to do down at the Medical College of Ohio! Seems these animal researchers decided the best use of tax payers money was to gather together a bunch of news clippings (true or not) and put them in an impressive looking book so people would think they were accurate...

They aren't. I found many glaring errors. For example, one "pit bull fatality" listed as happening in Seattle, Washington never even happened - at all! We've had two Briards kill a woman in Port Orchard, a Siberian husky kill and consume a child in Lacey, a rottweiler kill a young girl that climbed into their yard on the eastside and a rottweiler kill a 5 year old child in Kent - but no pit bulls killing anyone in Seattle!

Many of the reports are for dogs which were later noted to NOT be pit bulls.

This book is a testiment to the kind of waste of our tax payers money that goes on at Universities.

An invaluale, albeit enormous reference.......2003-09-04

While it is true that this is an enormous listing of newspaper articles on pit bulls up to 1986, it really is not a waste of time or "trees." This book was a huge help to our law firm while we were obtaining infomation for a case. In fact, it was invaluable as a resource. We tracked many of these abstracts down to their original sources and the reference info was absolutely accurate.

This is obviously not meant to be a book that you would sit down to read; it is a reference and a really good one at that. Particularly valuable is the fact that many of the articles are from hard to find or "underground" sources (as well as more mainstream newspapers, journals etc). While it is true that many of the articles report on the negative aspects of this breed of dog (including the cruelty of fighting them), I highly doubt the authors/editors tried to seek out only negative reports. Instead, my quess is that these are the kinds of articles that were being written at the time on which the book reports. In fact, I assume the whole thrust of the book is that during this time, pitbulls had suddenly come into the media eye for all the reasons we all know about: that people fight them, abuse them and cause them to become viscious. Lastly, while the editorial notes are a little brief, they are helpful, often providing the necessary context for the articles. So, in summation, don't be negatively influenced by other reviewers who perhaps didnt understand the purpose of the book. If you need research info on pitbulls, wow is this a jackpot!

One sidded trash........2003-01-02

This book is a very one sidded view of negative news paper and other articles collected that sheds only a bad light on this breed of dog. This type of "journalism" is very dangerous.

Just a laundry list of bad news.......2002-05-12

All this book contains are abbreviated and one sided news reports on incidents involving pit bulls. There is no author, no opinion, no photogaphs and no real substance to this book. It seems to have been created to just be a collection of dry straight forward abstracts and can only be viewed as a reference for that. Absolutely uninteresting.

great for embroidery.......2007-01-25

Very useful for my simple goldwork embroidery designs. Some need enlargement and others need to remove some of the lines not needed for goldwork. Could also work with crewel embroidery although I haven't done that yet.

very simple.......2001-03-22

This book can be a very helpful one if you're looking for simple designs.It is a sample of flower motifs mostly english and french from the 19th century and some oriental motifs as well.It is all black and white patterns and it looks a lot like a coloring book.It is an OK book if you're starting with the idea but very simple if you want to go indepth.I would recommend it if you're interested in crafts in general and also if you work with kids.

This volume is one of the more comprehensive reviews of Noguchi's life and work. Having met with Noguchi a couple of times at the premises of the future Museum, I regret not having then the insight now made accessible by our new digital lifestyle resources. His cross-cultural, multi-media artistry reflects Midwestern adolescence with Pacific overtures. Ashton states "Noguchi's biography is rich in hints of the sources of his formative years, and while no single source can be isolated, some are more suggestive than others. Dr. Rumely, the progressive educator who founded the Interlaken School in Indiana where Noguchi began his American education, had placed Noguchi in the home of ... a Swedenborgian minister. The boy was thrust into a situation in which the thoughts that had helped shape the modern movement -- through such figures as Blake, Emerson, Poe, and Baudelaire -- were sacred. ...the notion of a universal rhyming scheme had attracted nineteenth-century artists who wished to see some kind of elemental unity in the universe; who relished the endless possibilities of analogy."

Combining influences of the industrializing modernity of small cities and towns of the Midwest at this time, and seemingly inspired both by ancient Japanese "tumuli" and the Native American Mound Builders, his mnemonic response to the sights of such landscapes "got me going". With this amplified illumination into Noguchi's background and more familiarity with his abiding interests in "earth sculpturing", perhaps new educational paradigms should be considered in our thinking of art, architecture and American historic preservation.
