Canadians must remember the lessons of Korea.......2004-08-08

This book is both wonderful and horrifying at the same time. In today's global environment, the lessons of Korea are all the more important for the Government of Canada, the high command and the Canadian public to remember! This book should be read and sit on the corner of every desk in the Department of Defense. Canadian should also reflect on the government's callous disregard of the navy's helicopter pilots (i.e. the Sea King Episode), or the fact Canadian troops were sent to Afghanistan in green uniforms. These episodes clearly demonstrate that politics wins over the lives of the service personnel every time, just as it had in Korea. Here we sit over 60 distant from the Korea war and the Canadian Government and military are still making many of the same mistakes.

Far Eastern Tour: The Canadian Infantry In Korea 1950-1953 by Brent Byron Watson (History Teacher, Okanagan University College) is a tautly written and serious-minded examination and history of Canada's involvement in the Korean War, including the hardships Canadian infantry suffered which included inappropriate training, stark living and combat conditions, and the deadly blood toll of the war itself. Far Eastern Tour is very highly recommended as being an extensively researched, carefully written, and scholarly accurate look into what living amid such combat was like, the pressures it demanded, and the extraordinary people who faced the horrors of war and did not back down from what had to be done.

Excelent Autobiography of Glen Seaborg.......2001-07-10

Annotation This autobiography details the interaction of an eminent scientist, Glenn Seaborg, with the highest levels of government in the U.S. during an important period for both science and public policy. Seaborg worked for each administration from 1946 to 1996. The work is based on meticulous notes that he recorded each day. Much of the material in the chapters consists of unedited excerpts from his personal diary, which are interesting, but often too detailed for general readers. Sections at the end of each chapter contain personal reflections that provide many fascinating insights into the personalities of the nation's leaders. The book also contains numerous photos of Seaborg taken with presidents and other dignitaries.

This book is a good way to start your baby eating well from the beginning. Dr. Brazelton has a laid back, common sense approach that really works. After dealing with two kids that fight eating practically anything, I wanted to do things differently with my newest child. The advice not only worked for the baby, but the older kids as well! I recommend this book highly.

All You Need to Know.......2004-06-24

This is the ideal book for every parent who wants to know how to help their child learn healthy eating habits. But according to Brazelton, you'd better start early. I think parents everywhere will find this book contains everything they need to know - yet it is small enough to fit into a pocket: what a relief!

This is a fabulous book for any family fighting over food, and for any parent with their own issues about food. All the basic info is here, and it's so easy to find exactly what you need because it is so short and well organized. I highly recommend Feeding Your Child The Brazelton Way - I wish I'd read it when I was pregnant. It sure would have saved me a lot of trouble!

Expensive Common Sense Advice.......2004-04-07

I don't dispute Dr. Brazelton's advice on medical issues. On child care issues he seems like an aristocratic professor who handed off his own kids to wife and nanny and now sits in an ivory tower, smoking a pipe,dispensing common sense advice and collecting royalties. He just doesn't understand why you might not want your child in diapers and breastfeeding at age 3 or why the television might be on - in his world every child is an only child, and mothers don't work or have daycare providers like Mary Poppins. This book is just as arrogant and unrealistic as the other books he's written and the advice on breastfeeding problems could ONLY have been written by a man. The book in a nutshell: Don't sweat the vegetables - if your child gets enough milk and very little junk food, he'll be OK.

Less help than I had hoped for.......2004-03-08

First of all, let me say that I am a big fan of Dr. Brazelton and appreciate his no nonsense approach. After I saw his week long series on the Today show I decided to purchase this book thinking it would help me with feeding my 15 month old.

Unfortunately, I was disappointed when I received the book. It details feeding your child from birth all the way up through elementary school. Because it's a short book there isn't a whole lot of information for any one age group. I found that Dr. Brazelton was able to cover just about everything written in this book during his five minute segment on the Today show.

If you've seen Dr. Brazelton discuss this topic in an interview then you don't need to buy the book.

Perhaps because Dr. Brazelton does use a common sense approach, there's little to write about? I'm not sure.

It won't turn me off from other Brazelton books though. I fully intend on purchasing his potty training book when the time comes. Since that topic has a more narrow scope, perhaps there will be more information relevant to my son's age.

Everything You Need To Know About Wine.......2007-05-14

What a great book! This book teaches you as much or as little as you want to know about wine. It takes the confusion out of tasting new wines and shopping for wine is now fun. You could study it like a textbook and become well versed in the subject or learn what you need to know to make drinking wine more enjoyable.

Not The Best For Starters.......2003-05-05

If you are looking for a good book to start out with, to learn the basic ABC's of wine, then I would reccomend The Complete Idiot's Guide To Wine by Phillip Seldon. This one (Jancis Robinson's) however is good for people like myself who already know the basics (the distinguishing characteristics of grape varieties, the main regions, how to make reasonablly good food/wine pairings, etc.)
In other words, it's not the easiest book to follow.

Another note- she makes her disgust of Spanish wines known in the opening paragraph on page 222 when she says "If it (Spain) had Germany's love of efficiency, or France's respect for bureaucracy, Spain might be sending us oceans of judiciously priced wine made expressly for the international market. But Spain is an anarchic jumble of districts and regions...and heartbreakingly awful human constructions, and has to be treated as such by the wine enthusiast."
I found those comments to be misleading, as Spain to me is a model exporter of high quality wines. Just about any Rioja or Tempranillo wine imported and that goes for less than $...is of fine quality. That is my opinion of course. Another semi-complaint is that there was not enough material on Argentina (only 6 paragraphs) which I found to be a shame, since Argentina has very unique and delicious wines.

Overall this is good, as I said earlier, for those who already have a basic knowledge.

An Esoteric Ramble through the World of Wine.......2001-12-05

There are many types of wine books on the market today. Some are the Dummy and KISS type - with little graphics and simple statements to start you from your first baby steps. Other are rich tomes with a wealth of information, like the Oxford Companion to Wine, which Jancis edits. These have just about every term and region you could hope to learn about.

This companion to Jancis' TV series is neither of the above, and it is much more. It is Jancis speaking to you, from her richly educated base of knowledge, to help you learn what makes wine so interesting. Think of Jancis as your incredibly experienced aunt, who has just come back from some exotic trip. She and you have sat down in the living room by a fire, are sipping some wine, and she is preparing to regale you with stories, and tidbits, and insights, and fascinating worlds you didn't even imagine.

That's what the book is like.

It starts with the basics - how to taste, how to serve, how to decant, wine and food. Even in these areas you get the sense that Jancis is chatting with you about something she loves. She admits to decanting full whites not because they need it, but because she loves the glowing color.

She goes into the gritty details of how wines are made, what a free-run-wine is, how sparkling and sweet wines are created. And then, she begins in on the regional reviews.

France, of course, is first. It always seems to come first. Beautiful pictures of the Chateau Latour tower and Loire valley gables. You move on through Italy, Spain, and yes, the US and Australia get a mention in here too. The reviews are all written from her heart - you see clearly what she likes and doesn't like, and you learn why.

A great way to learn more about wine - especially if you're also able to watch the TV Series!

Good overview, but some bad advice.......2001-09-04

This is a very solid wine overview. However, some of the advice is bad. For example, early on the author states that wine purchasers shouldn't worry too much about a wine's vintage or geography. Actually, these two factors are extremely important and crucial to the appreciation of fine wines. Simply stated, Bordeaux wines and Tuscan wines are considerably better in certain. Geography (or terroir) is one of the reasons I will not buy a Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, but I will buy a Barolo or Barbaresco.

Read this book if you want to know more about wine!.......1997-12-17

In what is truly one of the most informative and informal books on wine, Jancis Robinson, the only journalist ever to be given the title Master of Wine, takes you on a journey through this magnificent drink.

As one who truly knows her craft, Jancis shows the reader everything needed to be able to make good decisions about wine. From a discussion about different wine glasses to the different regions where wine is made to the different grape varietals, Jancis lets it all hang out.

Don't get me wrong, though. While Jancis is very informal in her discussion, she is decidedly British, so the text reads as if it were spoken with an accent. Some of the terms are British as well, so a little knowledge of the British way of speaking helps. For example, what Americans (and the French) call a Bordeaux, the English call a Claret. These little things might trip a true wine novice, but I'm certain that anyone who enjoys wine and wants to find out more will keep this book in the bookshelf (when not reading it) for a very long time.

Great Sheltie Book.......1999-05-05

I've found this book to be very comprehensive, it has alot of good information on genetics, colour inheritance, especially the merle gene (which I've been able to do little research on outside this book) I think it's definitely worth the money.

Lots of pictures and history, but not worth the money........1996-01-24

This book by a noted author/exhibitor/judge has lots of background information on the sheltie, updated from his original 1974 book. If you are interested in the history of the sheltie, or love stats, etc. you might enjoy this book. However, if you are looking for practical information, save your money for another book.

The public became aware of new ferment in the Soviet art world in 1962, when Nikita Khrushchev pungently expressed his distate for some modernist works of painting and sculpture exhibited at the Moscow Manege, and again in 1974, when police bulldozed an "unofficial" open air art exhibition in Moscow and roughed up the spectators.

Not so well known is the fact that quite a few of the Soviet artists whose nonconformity to the canons of socialist reform once brought them world attention now live and work in the United States, often in relative obscurity. What motivated these artists to leave the USSR? Why did they chose to come to the United States? How have they fared in their new lives and careers?

In this study a sociologist and two art historians, one an emigre, the other an American, seek to answer these questions, drawing on interviews with the artists themselves and examples of their work. Together the essays provide a revealing new perspective on the lives and work of contemporary artists, the difficulties they encounter in two very different cultural worlds, and the experience of attempting a transistion from one to the other.
