rambling.......2007-08-17

I have a rule of at least two chapter before deciding whether to continue,I pushed it to three in a hope of finding some reason about this book to continue, sadly i could not. This book is just a rambling of episodic stories from the author.Having read the preface i knew all i want about the author and wanted to get going with the amazing facts that it suggested.Three chapters on i felt weighed down by cartoon explanations that weren,t needed and endless application, topic boxes after the shortest of paragraphs. This book should be condensed, 1007 pages, and then perhaps the title will match the content.

I had to buy and return this book as I needed the third edition and this was the second edition. Perhaps you should only sell the most current edition? It would save A LOT of hassle for us students.

All about the brain?.......2007-07-17

This is an excellent book for the general public. It is a handy reference manual and it is written in a readable style. I recommend this to anyone who happens to own a brain and wants to get the most from it.

I have friends and family who want to read this book...but they're not getting my copy!! Fascinating to read, an obvious "keeper" to my reference shelf, I will turn to it often. Very helpful in personal relationships, health concerns, too many good points to list here. This book should be available in every public and school library and in every teacher's, physician's, and parent's personal library, also. Very helpful in understanding human behavior. Absolutely everyone who reads, and can think...needs this book!

What a great book!.......2002-03-12

I am a beginning origami enthusiast and have only five origami books to my name. However, four of them are by John Montroll and this book, Mythological Creatures, is one of the best!! The drawings are easy to follow, the designs are very different and challenging and when completed, the three-headed dragon is just awesome!! It took me four hours to fold it, but it was worth the time. Get this book! The folds are great and the results are worth every penny!

Great Models for Intermediate Folders.......2002-02-16

This book has my favorite Montrol Model, Cerberus the three headed dog who guards the gates of hell, and my second favorite Pegasus. I had an old Sakoda model of a the flying horse but this one far exceeds it.

Montrol models tend to be complex, with many many folds. The detail of the three headed dragon is amazing. But the final model is less than pleasing. Sometimes less is more. On the other hand, there are no cuts in any of these models and if you use good large paper you will be amazed at what is possible.

(These models are easier than the Lang bugs)

I've seen better!.......2000-04-21

I was very disappointed in Montroll's origami books. the directions/diagrams were not clear or complete. i was also disappointed in the end results of the pieces. they lacked the detail despite the complicated folds that were used to achieve the finished pieces.

Not his best.......1999-07-01

This is a decent origami book overall. There are some very impressive models, such as the three headed dragon, but most of the book is pretty watered-down compared to some of Montroll's other books due to lack of detail.

It ought to be better........1998-11-10

In this book, Montroll falls into routines. The chinese zodiac models are ugly enough (just compared to his beautiful models in "Origami sculptures"),and the process of folding lacks scintillation. The second part of the book is fair, some mythological creatures are faithfully constructed.

Minot's short book (113pgs) is a genuinely honest account of a painter that has rejected his white, upper-class upbringing and comments on the '(moral) poverty of the rich'. By choice, he lives a vagabond's life in a number of different cities in the United States, including a revealing glimpse into a New Orleans neighborhood. Minot also sojourns at a number of destinations abroad, relying on the kindness of strangers and friends of friends. His episodes often include run-ins with the more dangerous characters of society, various illicit activities, and perhaps not surprisingly, with the local law enforcement. These encounters would have never occurred if he chose to take the standard conformist path of: finish college > secure a well-paying job > raise a family > buy a nice house, dog, 2 cars, etc. Issues of family tension amongst his siblings and with his father are a constant theme throughout the book. The diseases of alcoholism and gambling addictions are also explored from his personal perspective and experiences.

His book brings up an important and interesting topic, which is the scarcity of strong values, ethics, tolerance, and compassion amongst the wealthy members of our society. But by no means is this book a thorough examination of the subject. The 'strange poverty of the rich' is really only discussed as short, almost tangential comments that are interspersed through the episodes of Minot's life. Nevertheless, I appreciated the honesty of his writing and enjoyed reading about his colorful life thusfar.

I strongly agree with many of his comments on the materialism and hypocrisy of the rich. Minot's book is a worthy and quick read.

The Colonel Nicholson character (in the movie the Bridge over the river Kwai) is based on the allied camp commander, Lieutenant Colonel Philip Toosey, who was a remarkable officer by any standards.

Awarded the DSO for heroism during the defense of Singapore, he refused an order to join the evacuation so he could remain with his men during captivity. Under the Geneva Convention, it was forbidden for prisoners of war to do any work of use to the enemy. Building the bridge might be construed as collaboration but there was no alternative. Toosey, from the outset, understood that the only real issue was to ensure that as many of his men as possible should survive. Under the circumstances, he achieved this to a remarkable degree. In the hellish conditions of the camp, he worked courageously to ensure that as many of his men as possible would survive. He endured regular beatings when he complained of ill-treatment of prisoners, but as a skilled negotiator he was able to win many concessions from the Japanese by convincing them that this would speed the completion of the work. Behind their backs, however, he did everything possible to delay and sabotage the construction without endangering his men, and also helped organize a daring escape, at considerable cost to himself. For his conduct in the camp, he won the undying respect of his men.

One of a number of Allied POW's, Toosey was in charge of his men from late 1942 through May 1943 when they were ordered to build two Kwai River bridges in Burma (one of steel, one of wood), to help move Japanese supplies and troops from Bangkok to Rangoon. In reality, the actual bridge took 8 months to build (rather than two months), and they were actually used for two years, and were only destroyed two years after their construction - in late June 1945. The memoirs of the 'real' Colonel Nicholson were compiled into a 1991 book by Peter Davies entitled "The Man Behind the Bridge."

After the war, he showed great generosity of spirit by saving the life of Colonel Saito, second in command at the camp and a relatively decent officer, when he spoke up for him at the war crimes tribunal. He worked for the veterans all his life, and became President of the National Federation of Far Eastern Prisoners of War.

Toosey returned to Liverpool and resumed his career in banking.

He refused repeated requests by the veterans to speak out against the film, being much too modest to seek any glory or recognition for himself. However you will find his achievements documented in a book by Professor Peter Davies entitled "The Man Behind the Bridge".

The publisher has another book, same price, also about 270 pages, also written by a woman investor, only it's much better and more detailed than this book. "A Beginner's Guide To Day Trading Online" by Toni Turner is a much better buy.

The advice and guidance offered by Ms Price is helpful, human, humourous and to-the-point. The step-by-step approach she takes to all aspects of investment activity-from identifying risk quotients to defining styles and purposes of investment-was helpful without being intimidating. I was able to relate to terms and concepts from my own experience, and quickly gained the confidence to open a brokerage account, place a trade, and still sleep at night. I reccomend this book to all investors-novice and experienced-for the clear insights and explanations, and for the details and resources contained within.
