Book Description
The day Canada entered World War I, William Lighthall and his adventurous friends departed the staid halls of McGill University. In a burst of patriotism they set out to join the Royal Canadian Dragoons. None of them expected the war to last more than three months. Seeing his first aeroplane, Lighthall decided to join the Royal Flying Corps. He did not know he would serve years in France, Mesopotamia, and Macedonia before his transfer would be granted.

A very talented writer. The translation requirements of such a book dictate that Ms. Goyne must be a very talented individual and, obviously, very intelligent.

What you want materially and what you want spiritually are both important, says John Gray, Ph.D., in How to Get What You Want and Want What You Have. "Wanting more is the nature of our soul, mind, heart, and senses," he says. As an antidote of sorts to the sometimes overly strict books of late that advocate a life of utter simplicity, he concedes that it's okay to want a big promotion or fancy car. It's also noble to want a solid spiritual life and to want to be at peace with yourself. However, he says, you need to recognize and work on the many self-defeating behaviors that may be thwarting your chances for reaching your goals. In fact, he identifies 24 typical stumbling blocks to look for.
How to Get What You Want and Want What You Have is perfect for the ostensibly successful businesspeople who can't explain why they're miserable, or people who blame their partners for their miseries instead of looking inward. It's filled with anecdotes and tools to help you achieve a fuller sense of identity. Gray says that one of the most important steps to reaching this level of self-awareness is meditation, and Gray gives dozens of stepping-off points for meditation exercises to help you ascertain what exactly it is that you want, and how to remove any obstacles--whether external or internal. Take it from a man who used to be so ascetic that he was rendered homeless but now has achieved a strong sense of self and has managed to write nine bestselling books: both spiritual and material success are within your grasp.

Now a guru..please!!!.......2005-01-26
His view of God is fluffy and New Agey. His relationship books
I thought were bad enough but this book comes across as though he has some secret information about spiritual matters,,not!!
He repeats himself about getting connected with God,and to me
it sounds more like "God source" as many New Agers say, rather
than God.More like God source within you,eh,this is too much!
I agree with the other reviewer who said it's about self
promotion.Seems like that to me too. It's kind of a funny book,
ok for a good laugh I suppose but not for seriously looking
for religion or God.
Not the best, but certainly helpful........2005-01-06
I picked up this book because I was looking for something that would make me feel as though my life were more fulfilling. I knew a lot of it had to do with my perception of events that occur. Because of that, I had to seek out a way to help me change the way I view things. So I picked up this book, thinking it would be a big help.
And it was. John Gray does not lack detail in his description of how you can improve your life in many different ways. While I don't agree that you need all the "love tanks" he describes in order to be happy, there are some vital ones mentioned that I think are important. His techniques for filling those "tanks" are very helpful and do improve the happiness a person feels.
I gave this book 3 stars because it was unnecessarily long. He seems to write in a dull monotone and repeats a lot of his ideas as though he were writing for children that need to hear it often in order to comprehend and remember it. I skipped some unnecessary sections as I got further into the book because I started to get anxious to finish it. Certainly not the best way to end a book if the author wants to keep their reader's interest.
Get this!.......2004-11-02
I had not read the other "mars and venus" books when I picked this one up, but I became an immediate fan of his writing style. I found myself intrigued with much of what was discussed in the book, and found the parts on forgiveness especially helpful. This book will put it all into perspective for you.
Buy it for yourself AND the people you know!.......2004-01-23
This book really surprised me. I have not been a fan of Gray's, but I am now. In this new era of energy shifts and higher consciousness, John helps you get through past issues and get on with life! I have read that some think all he talks about is God, and that is simply not true. Yes, he does mention God and devote some writing to it - but what self-changing book would be complete without bringing God into the picture?
This book helped open my eyes to some of my blocks in a very subtle AH-HA way. I also see many of Gray's points in issues my friends and clients are struggling with. If you feel unease and are overwhelmed by the changes in life, this is a good book to help pinpoint some of the root causes and find the solutions.
Very disappointing.......2004-01-03
I have read other John Gray books and have found them wonderful - I usually instantly connect with what he is saying. I was disappointed with this book and couldn't buy into it since his message was so different. The discussions on meditation and religion just seemed so out of place and even though I consider myself to be religious (a Christian), they didn't appeal to me at all. Maybe I got caught off-guard with this one, but I don't want to keep this book on my bookshelf, let alone recommend it to others.

a cookbook to reach for every day.......2007-05-07
Fantastic soup cookbook. I love the photos to inspire, the nutritional information at the end of each recipe giving the calories, fiber content, etc. It has a great range of recipes including all-vegetarian, bean and grain soups, poultry and meat soups to fruit soups.
We have made 4 of the recipes so far and each one has been a hit and a definite repeat. My husband made the Greek Chicken and Rice soup today and it was divine.
I think this soup cookbook is a winner.

Growing up on homemade vegetable soup molded me into a soup lover. Naturally I was drawn to this book from the moment I read the title. Soup warms the heart, soul and body on a chilly day. The aroma of soup simmering on a stove always bring back pleasant memories,...... memories of home and family, memories of frosty days.
In this busy world, few people take time to enjoy the art of cooking. Soup is a pleasure to make and it's adaptable: vegetables, meat, herbs or leftovers all can work together to make a delicious and nutritious meal. Ingredients from the cupboard or refrigerator combine easily.
"This is a collection of favorite soups and amusing anecdotes gathered over the years." The chapters in this book cover nutrition as well as various types of soup. The discussions on portions, how to serve, stock, and equipment were helpful and interesting.
The aroma of vegetable soup has always brought me comfort. The recipes for vegetable soups contained in this book, are imaginative, different from the southern recipes my grandmother shared with me.
I've tried several of the recipes among them were; Mighty Minestrone and Sopa de Legumbres--Minestrone New Mexico Style, both were delicious. Each had its own distinct flavor.
Grandmother always quoted, "Chicken soup cures the cold." Memories of her stirring soup came to mind as I tried the recipe for "Ole-Fashioned Chicken Soup"; I didn't have a cold but enjoyed it anyway. I used noodles instead of Matzo Balls. I'll try them next time. My sons stopped by for a visit just in time to taste tests this soup, both declared it delicious. Perhaps someday they will fondly remember my soup.
This cookbook is easy to read. The numbered steps make it simple to follow the instructions. The ingredients are simple and many times already in your cupboard or refrigerator. The colored photographs tempt me to try more recipes. I'll be recommending this book to my soup loving friends.
Good recipes.......2005-03-15
I bought this book because I was looking a book that had both summer and winter soups using ingredients my family enjoys. We don't follow any of the latest diet trends--I am more concerned about being able to fix a variety of meals for my family of five.
I've tried several recipes from the book over this winter, and each has been a hit. They are delicious (and I'm an average, at best, cook), and filling as a meal on their own, or as a side.
While easy to follow, the recipes do take time. But I have not been disappointed at all with the results. I will continue to use this book and mark our favorites for repeats. I can't wait until warmer weather to try some of the fruity summer soups!
Good Soups. Only Fair Presentation for Healthy Use.......2005-02-06
`Soup for Every Body' by Joanna Pruess, with culinary coauthority from Lauren Braun RD, LD is a very nice little soup book that specializes in recipes that cater to five different dietary doctrines. These are `Low Carb', `High Protein', `Smart Fat', `Low Calorie', and `Vegetarian or Vegan'. While I have not read or reviewed any of Ms. Pruess' other works, her biography places her among the middle range of talented and respected cookbook authors such as Jean Anderson, Mark Bittman, and Jack Bishop.
My very first reaction to this book is that it is bound to fail, as it tries to imitate the Democratic Party in trying to appeal to five different, not necessarily compatible special interest groups. The two most antagonistic interests I can imagine are Vegan versus low carb. I do not know low carb doctrines, but I do know that meat, eggs, and heavy cream are low carb darlings while these are antithetical to vegan diets. I also note that the very dairy heavy cream and the very meaty chicken stock are both listed as ingredients of a soup cited as being suitable for `Vegetarian or Vegan'. I know my favorite vegan niece would turn up her nose at this recipe.
I am convinced that the four best ways to combine healthy interests with soup cooking are:
1. Describe how to turn typical recipes into healthy recipes by things like replacing butter and animal fat with olive oil, replacing white bread with whole grains, and replacing meat stocks with vegetable stocks.
2. Provide simply all around healthy recipes, as you may find in a book by Kathleen Dahlmans.
3. Provide recipes for classic and modern vegetarian soups, with an emphasis on variety.
4. Provide recipes for low carb soups.
I am not an expert on dieting, but I suspect that most diet plans succeed as much or more from their reinforcing a ritual which sanctifies the effort and encourages compliance, possible by making the dishes just a tad less pleasant than unhealthy alternatives. I think that nutrition and eating for all around good health is the best approach to not gaining weight and let exercise take care of loosing excess weight.
Now that that lecture is out of the way, I will say that this is a decent little soup book if you simply ignore all the nutritional baggage. I think the statistics on calories, calories from fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, carbohydrates, dietary fiber, sugars, proteins, vitamins, and minerals are so approximate as to be useless. Most experienced amateur cooks probably cook more like Rachael Ray or Jamie Oliver than they do like Ina Garten, who, like a true former professional caterer, has to create reproducible dishes, measures everything down to the teaspoon. Thus, the only way these measurements can make any sense whatsoever, you have to follow the measurements to a tee. And that doesn't account for variations in natural products. I am willing to bet that there is close to a 50% variation in some components in a pound of bay scallops depending on the location and season in which they were harvested, not to mention differences between wild and cultivated fish.
The book is divided into five (5) chapters on soups plus a chapter on garnishes and a chapter on stocks. The most unusual chapter is the ten (10) pages and five recipes devoted to fruit soups, a subject not commonly covered in most other `little soup books', although James Peterson's big soup book, `Splendid Soups' devotes almost twenty-five pages with seventeen recipes to the subject. The stock recipes are well within the tolerances of an amateur home cook, although the need to collect ten pounds of uncooked chicken carcasses, wings, backs and ribs may require just a bit more obsession with soup making than most people have. The only other argument with these recipes is that it keeps the veggies in the pot for the full three hours of simmering. Most authorities I respect put the veggies in for just the last hour. The chapter does get points for including both standard and rich brown chicken stocks and a rich duck stock.
The index confirms my growing opinion that the average cook who has at least one other good book on soups does not need this book. There is a Recipe Index organized by the five dietary concerns listed above, plus a general alphabetical index. A soup such as the Mediterranean Fish Soup with Quick Aioli appears in two different places in the Recipe Index, but does not appear in the alphabetical index.
This book does have good, well written recipes. And, if you are a low carb, high protein or low calorie fan, this book will give you very good soups. However, while my first sin of a poor book is to not stay on message, my second is to have a weak or confused message. This book is a waste of time and money for vegans and not the best soup book for vegetarians. It is probably better than soup recipes you will get in Atkins or South Beach recipe books. And, that is probably the very best thing that can be said about this book.
Buy this book if you are on a low carb regimen. If not, seek a good general book on soups such as the new CIA Book of Soups.

Exquisite nature photography and insightful commentary........1996-11-30
Greg and Mary Beth Dimijian have produced a book full of wonderful images of animals, animal behavior, and animal habitats around the world. Each image is coupled with a short but insightful essay which expounds upon the behavior illustrated, or the circumstances of taking the photograph, or simply makes a point about the environment, evolution, or biology. Greg Dimijian, a former clinical psychologist, and his wife, Mary Beth, have travelled the world from the tropics to antarctica and present a dazzling array of dynamic and beautiful images. The essays, with their up-to-date discussions of behavioral theory and biology are written for the layman, but are fascinating and concisely written. There is also a delightful foreward by Jane Goodall. A wonderful gift for anyone with a love of animals, biology, or photography

Customer Reviews:
Knitting School is geared to no one.......2006-05-05
I am rating this book zero stars. A totally useless book. But the rating forces you to give 1 star minimum.
It is supposed to be for intermediate to advanced knitters. At that level you know 99% of what is in this book. One or two new things that might be in there are not worth the shelf space this takes up, nor the trouble to find them because of the chaos of presentation.
Commonly known techinques are renamed so there is no way to look up a common term such as "make 1." But there is no way to look up anything the skimpy index. I tried to find "adding yarn/ joining new yarn/ joining yarn" etc. Nothing. Now there are at least three good ways I know for joining yarn, one of which makes an invisible join in mid row. In a book for "designers," this should be described for sure.
The book is mostly hand drawn instructions for techniques with a brief paragraph of explanation next to the picture. The cast on section is sadly limited to three methods, (one if which is using two yarns held together as a separate technique) totally inadequate for designers. No one could learn continental knitting from these drawings which are missing the right hand. It looks like a "one-hand clapping" explanation of knitting. Laughable.
Pages on double knitting which has been renamed "tubular knitting" have a limited audience. The section on entrelac has been renamed Knitted Patchwork of all things. Why rename common terms so that the novice cannot even look them up in a real knitting book? I can do entrelac in my sleep, and I could not figure it out from the lame instructions in this "School." it looks like they are using 6 double edged needles (text says holders) instead of the intelligent way of picking up stitches and moving across. Amazing.
Similarly, quilted knitting is not about the quilted knitting stitches described in Barbara Walker's books, but actually quilting knitting on a backing. I guess you do this to get rid of the advantages of stretchiness in a knited garment and make it into something that looks like the Michelin tire man's jacket?
In all, buy any other knitting book, even the beginning books from Leisure Arts with names like "I can't Believe I am knitting" and you will be farther ahead. At least you will learn the common names of stitches so you can use written instructions that use these standard terminology. And the illustrations are better.
I can't believe this book got published in today's market with its wealth of wonderful knitting books. Obviously, anything can get published if it has Knitting in its title these days.
Great reference, clear instructions.......2005-12-04
As a beginning knitter, I am fine as long as I don't get distracted and make a single mistake. The illustrations in this book allow you to really see what the stitch is like. I think I finally will be able to "read" my knitting when I set it down. I am very pleased with this purchase, and I own all the "greats" in terms of knitting instruction. This one definitely will be well used...brilliant in terms of clarity. I agree this isn't a "How to complete your first project" but for sure it provides a fast and clear look up for when you encounter something foreign in a pattern instruction. Some unusual stitches, too.
Good reference, bad course.......2005-06-27
If you already know the basics of knitting, you might like this as a reference book to advance your knowledge. It has some topics, techniques, and tips that aren't in my other reference books ("Vogue Knitting", Katherina Buss's "Big Book of Knitting"), some that I've found useful (one of the seaming methods, the topic on mending worn-out holes, the overview of baby booties). The illustrations are very clear. I check this book, along with my others, before tackling something new.
If you're a rank beginner, do not choose this book for your course of study. The order of topics is highly inappropriate. An egregious example is the very first topic, titled "before getting started". Half of that first topic is on how to design your own sweater, before you've even learned how to knit! You'll be mired in advanced techniques before learning the basics. The casting-on method looks different than what all my other books teach, so you'll be non-standard, for better or worse. And a couple of basic topics are missing - how to read project instructions (although you might figure it out from the list of abbreviations used for the book) and how to knit horizontal stripes. The topics on cables and knitting with multiple colors are weak.
Despite the title, this book isn't appropriate as a knitting course at any level. That's because the order of topics is inane. It often tells you to do something that it doesn't teach until later. Thank goodness for the index. It is good as a reference book to pop around in, in whatever order interests you.
The book has generic instructions for knitting baby booties, mittens, gloves, socks, and an Aran Isle sweater. It does not have any detailed, specific project instructions. The overview of baby booties was very helpful for understanding my first baby bootie project (from another book). The Aran Isle sweater is an intriguing method of knitting a sweater as one piece with no seams to sew.
Neat, Clean Book........2004-09-19
This book is not bad at all. A comprehensive guide to many techniques which I hadn't ever even heard of. Though the lack of photographs is slightly..offputting, the drawn images somehow seem clearer and add neatness to the book. This is a book that I would reccomend to new and and slightly more advanced knitters, though nothing more. The patterns involving the skills you've learnt from reading the book are simple and mostly for children. Buy this book if you like clean, streamlined things, easy to read and understand tutorials and how-to's and aren't really looking for a pattern book.
Simply put, this is an exellent book for beginners, though the pattenrs are slightly plain.
Great for visual learners, and those who like illustrations.......2004-01-13
After buying "Knitting School" through a web merchant, I wondered if I should have bothered since I already own a number of knitting reference books (like the Vogue Ultimate Knitting Book). Unfortunately, it does seem to cover most of what other books in my collection do. However, for those who like heavy illustrations, then this book may be for you. I didn't spot one page that had more text than illustrations. Every page has pictures on it (almost always more than one). There are no photographs in the book (except of yarn in the beginning), and even examples of finished garments are hand drawn. But, the illustrations are very clear and well drawn. If you are a beginner, and looking for a nice book to start your collection, this may be a good choice. Especially if you learn best from pictures rather than text. Most pictures are accompanied by text as well. There are even basic "patterns" in the back for help on making and assembling items like booties, aran sweaters, gloves, socks, etc. There is also information of things such as: embroidery (including motifs for zodiac signs and fancy letters), quilted knits, knitted patchwork, beading, shoulder pads, hems, sewing, pleats, darts, fixing mistakes, circular knitting, and much more.

I had to drive 45 minutes just to get a glance at this wonderful book. Ms. Carr has done a beautiful job of reviewing what meager evidence there is on companion plants and their effectiveness. There are some helpful drawings and an "encyclopedia" section for quick reference. Truly well done, and, unfortunately, currently unavailable everywhere I've looked!
Book Description
Irreverent yet insightful, this lighthearted guide coaches grandfathers on how to celebrate the birth of their grandchildren and enthusiastically embrace all the joys and perils of grandparenting. Written from a grandfather's point of view, it dispenses cheerful advice with doses of humor on subjects such as how to feed and communicate with the children as well as when to spoil them. Included is experienced advice on babysitting, travel, time-sharing, not overstaying your welcome, gift-giving, and making the most of time spent with the young ones.

For the oft neglected grandpa.......2007-01-16
A very funny introduction to being a grandfather. A great gift!
A treat to share and an excellent giftbook.......2004-06-06
Keeping Your Grandkids Alive Till Their Ungrateful Parents Arrive is a humorous guidebook written especially for grandparents. Though it offers practical tips, it is at least as much a mirthful celebration of the joys and perils of coping with rambunctuous young ones as it is an advice guide. A most entertaining read covering everything from "spoiling" children to dealing with the great outdoors, so called "grand-stay etiquette" for visiting, and much more. A treat to share and an excellent giftbook for especially for proud granddads.
Most Fun Book for Granddads I've Seen.......2004-05-19
The humor is contemporary and intelligent, plus the advice is down to earth...if it wasn't, my dad would not have read the book, but surprise, surprise-he loved it. Now a couple of his friends (also new grandpas) have borrowed Keeping Your Grandkids Alive. If you know an expecting granddad, pick up this book as a shower or birth announcement gift. You won't be disappointed.

Book Description
Kitasono Katue was a leading avant-garde literary figure, first in Japan and then throughout the world, from the 1920s to the 1970s. In his long career, Kitasono was instrumental in creating Japanese-language work influenced by futurism, dadaism, and surrealism before World War II and in contributing a Japanese voice to the international avant-garde movement after the war. This critical biography of Kitasono examines the life, poetry, and poetics of this controversial and flamboyant figure, including his wartime support of the Japanese state. Using Kitasono as a window on Japanese literature in the twentieth century, John Solt analyzes the relationship of Japanese writers to foreign literary movements and the influence of Japanese writers on world literature.
