Great Patriotic Book.......2002-02-13
I really enjoyed reading this book. I think it would be appropriate reading anytime, but even more so now since the events of September 11. If you want to take a look back at the World War II generation and then find out what they think about the direction America is headed today, this book is for you.

In the American imagination, Wilbur and Orville Wright are "earnest, young bicycle builders who attacked an age-old technological problem with fresh, ingenious thinking and dedication." There is plenty of truth to this, writes Seth Shulman, but it also obscures an important fact: The first flyers were so secretive and desperate to cash in on their invention that their behavior actually "retarded" the development of aviation. One of their most brutish acts involved a punishing legal fight with Glenn Hammond Curtiss, the inventor of the aileron (wing flaps that stabilize an aircraft in flight), retractable landing gear, pontoons, and much else. Unlocking the Sky suggests that Curtiss deserves at least near-equal billing with the brothers from Dayton. He performed the first public flight in the United States, sold the first commercial airplane, and piloted the first flight from one American city to another. "Curtiss surely belongs in the pantheon of America's greatest entrepreneurial inventors," writes Shulman. Yet he's virtually forgotten today, except by aficionados of aviation history. He comes across as a pioneering hero on these pages--and the Wright brothers as thuggish would-be monopolizers. This may be revisionist history, but it's a history that perhaps could stand revising. --John J. Miller
Book Description
Unlocking the Sky tells the extraordinary tale of the race to design, refine, and manufacture a manned flying machine, a race that took place in the air, on the ground, and in the courtrooms of America. While the Wright brothers threw a veil of secrecy over their flying machine, Glenn Hammond Curtiss -- perhaps the greatest aviator and aeronautical inventor of all time -- freely exchanged information with engineers in America and abroad, resulting in his famous airplane, the June Bug, which made the first ever public flight in America. Fiercely jealous, the Wright brothers took to the courts to keep Curtiss and his airplane out of the sky and off the market. Ultimately, however, it was Curtiss's innovations and designs, not the Wright brothers', that served as the model for the modern airplane.

Much that is good and bad about this book.......2006-04-16
I enjoyed reading about the efforts of Curtiss and colleagues. He was obviously an amazing inventor and did a great deal for the future of aviation. The constant bashing of the Wright Brothers was very tiresome and actually detracted from what was interesting reading about Curtiss. It took Shulman 90% of the book to give the Wright Brothers credit for what they had accomplished. Prior to that, I was waiting for Shulman to suggest that the Wright Brothers were not even present at Kitty Hawk.
Enlightening and enjoyable.......2006-01-26
I found this book to be a very fast and enjoyable read. The book is written in a manner that made me long to find out what happened next, I didn't want to put it down.
Much has been said in other reviews about about the merits of the Wright's patents and the author's "bias" against the brothers from Dayton. No doubt the Wrights were first to demonstrate that heavier than air flight was possible. However, there is also no doubt that any technical superiority the Wright Flyer enjoyed was short lived. The Wright brothers litigation was allowed to languish in the courts only until the outbreak of WWI, at which time the U.S. military was eager to get its hands on the far superior planes being built by Curtiss.
I strongly recommend this book. "Unlocking the Sky" will likely inspire you to read other books on the history of early aviation. After doing so, you can draw your own conclusions about the conrtibutions of Curtiss and the Wright brothers.
Highly enjoyable.......2005-06-17
Much of what the other reviewers have said is correct about this book. It is not a complete biography of Curtiss, it does spend a LOT of time be-littling the post-1903 Wrights, and I'm not sure he knows his technical airplane stuff 100%. However, this book is highly enjoyable and very easy to read. You'll be hooked and read it through in one or two sittings. The more you read about those early years of aviation, the more you learn. I've read a ton of books on the Wright Bros. early years, but their attempts to scuttle Curtiss in their later years were new to me. They hated Curtiss PERSONALLY! By contrast, the story of Curtiss's adventures at the dawn of aviation are great fun to read and you'll find yourself daydreaming about hanging around his shop to chat with him... not something I've ever wanted to do with Wilbur and Orville.
The Smithsonian Strikes Again.......2005-03-29
The subtitle; "Glenn Hammond Curtiss and the Race to Invent the Airplane", says much about the book. Curtiss had nothing to do with the invention of the airplane. Instead, the author vigorously argues in favor of Curtiss and the AEA (Aerial Experiment Association) as they blithely tried everything they could think of to steal, ignore, circumvent, or otherwise discredit the Wright's achievement. Their most odious act was the reconstruction of the Langley aerodrome, with the connivance of the Smithsonian, which has managed to so distort the historical record it is still fooling people today. This book carries their torch into the 21st Century. The AEA would be proud.
For those of you reading these reviews, what the Wrights discovered/invented was not the Curtiss lawyer's narrow focus on wing-warping versus ailerons, but full three-axis control plus propulsion. Find an aircraft designer today who thinks those items are "obsolete".
Curtiss vs. Wright.......2004-09-29
Seth Shulman writes a highly entertaining, enlightening, and well-written biography of the irrepressible Glenn Curtiss in "Unlocking The Sky." Unlike the typical biography, however, which drags out every last boring detail of the subject, Shulman's Unlocking The Sky cuts to the chase, framing Curtiss's life in the context of his early-and most significant-inventive successes, his involvement in the resurrection of the Langley Aerodrome, and his gut-wrenching and years-long legal battle with Orville and Wilbur Wright.
Before consuming Shulman's text I was, like most Americans, sold on the mythical status of the Wrights and their achievement. What little I knew of Curtiss created an image of a creative but conniving Johnny-come-lately in the burgeoning aviation field. When I read and reviewed "The Wright Brothers: A Biography" by Fred C. Kelly, which does an excellent job at presenting the Curtiss vs. Wright patent case in favor of the Wrights, I stated that with their "successful and historic flights at Kitty Hawk in 1903 the Wrights had ushered in a reasoned, scientific approach to the quest for man-flight. They had accomplished the impossible in virtual isolation, without financing or institutional support. They embody the can-do American ideal of independence and ingenuity."
Unfortunately, they also embody the American penchant for litigation. Even as taken with the Wrights as I was then, I did have the foresight in my review to add that while the Wrights "undoubtedly deserve the admiration and gratitude of mankind--Kelly was a personal friend of the Wrights and I'd like to read other viewpoints on the legal aspects of their later battles. Kelly may have been too close to render an objective and balanced picture of them.
This is exactly what Shulman supplies in impressive fashion. Undoubtedly the debate over patent infringement and the pre-Curtiss-reconstruction viability of Langley's aerodrome will go on indefinitely. But Shulman is convincing that Glenn Curtiss is an American worthy of greater renown-perhaps worthier than even the Wrights. Curtiss was certainly a more likable and prolific inventor.
A very minor, subjective beef with the book is something he hints at in the acknowledgements when he thanks his agent, who "strongly encouraged me to experiment with the narrative form." The result is an abruptly shifting narrative style sometimes referring to events historically, and other times in present tense-as if we were watching it occur now. The device served only to throw me out of the story. All in all, though, it's a very enjoyable and highly recommended book. --C.B. Jonnes

Book Description
Complete body conditioning for golf, running, tennis, swimming, cycling, skiing, and other sports and activities.
Originally developed by Joseph Pilates for boxers, gymnasts, and dancers, Pilates is a unique body-conditioning method that teaches precision movement generated from the center of the body-the "powerhouse"-which includes the abdominal muscles, lower back, and buttocks. The Pilates Edge demonstrates how the basic principles of Pilates can enhance sports training and promote athletic achievement as well as everyday health and fitness.
With this instructive book, athletes and anyone seeking to improve their physical performance will learn to strengthen and condition their bodies while preventing injuries through a basic Pilates workout, designed with variations for beginner and advanced levels. The authors provide specific workouts for golf, running, racket sports, swimming, cycling, and skiing, giving special attention to the muscle groups and common injuries associated with each sport.

PILATES FOR THE SPORTS ENTHUSIAST.......2007-04-10
I enjoy exercising and doing many sports such as tennis and golf. This book shows what Pilates exercises to do if you are interested in different sports. I love this book and am so happy I bought it.
Excellent guide for athletes.......2006-08-16
I was pleased to finally find this book a few years ago, as I was looking for a way to help with my fencing. As a book geared towards athletes, it assumes that you don't simply want to "look and feel fit", but build a real core that helps you become a stronger athlete, no matter what your sport.
I appreciated that the illustrations of the exercises (which are very well done) featured both authors, drving home the idea that Pilates is a fitness regimen for BOTH men and women who want to be stronger. Too many times books about exercise systems focus on one gender, which can turn people off... I often felt that Pilates suffered from being marketed too strongly towards women when it is a very universal exercise system.
I also very much liked that the core exercises (there are many) were ones that did not require any extra equipment, relying on your own body weight and range of motion to accomplish the movement. The sample exercise programs at the rear of the book emphasize this. Other sections of the book that include weights, bars, etc. are considered as supplemental to the core system and can be added as needed. Personally, this helped me to stay with the exercises, because I didn't need to have anything with me to do them.
An excellent book. I highly recommend it.
Excellent Starter Book.......2004-05-07
This book is great for anyone who is interested in Pilates. If you do other sports, like biking, running or golf, it gives you appropriate excercises to compliment your activities. It provides outstanding descriptions and pictures of the exercises.
Highly recommend this book...even if you just want a Pilates book with pictures.....
A great read for fitness enthusiasts!.......2004-03-24
As a cyclist and runner, I never before thought that I could benefit from Pilates. This book definitely changed that, and I recommend it to both serious athletes and anyone looking to improve their endurance and well-being. The stretches are great, and the pictures are easy to follow.
Photos make it easy to follow.......2004-03-15
A lot of exercise books are difficult to use for an actual workout. This book solves that problem with detailed descriptions for each move and later a purely visual guide that shows thumbnails of each pose. I'm not an "athelete", but I like to workout and wanted to start pilates to help with those aches and pains I get from the gym. This book is going to make it easy to get a pilates workout in a few times a week.
This book is incredibly well written, clear and concise. It gives great tips for those who do engage in the major sports featured (tennis, golf, skiing, running, etc.). Highly recommended!

A fresh look at a fascinating story.......2007-09-06
Really enjoyed this book - it covers a lot of areas of interest from colonialism and exploration to consumerism, advertising and international trade, and fascinating aspects of English and American social history, particularly gardening and entertaining. Well researched, lots of cross references, many images that bring the story to life.
Unlike other histories told in dry, scientific terms, The Pineapple is also an amusing read - full of wit, and peppered with personal comments from the author that make the whole thing come to life.
My only criticism is that the evolving role of the pineapple in 20th century eating, drinking and entertaining is barely touched upon. The rest of the book is so thorough, that I'm hoping there are plans for a second book that focuses on the 20th century, perhaps even told through historic recipes from early uses as showy garnish to its continuing starring role in cocktails ever since Trader Vic and Don the Beachcomber first started mixing, to its health benefits, as well as the continuing popularity of the pineapple as a decorative symbol.

Four and One-Half Pineapples, I Mean Stars.......2001-07-20
I find myself in between four and five on this book. It easily would have been five, had the author not drifted so much in telling us about her world travels and daily excursions. Maybe it's just a male thing, though.
The culture of the pineapple discovered by this world traveler are fascinating and informative. Being crazy for pineapple, I enjoyed very much hearing about its beginnings and spreading thorughout the tropics and sub-tropical regions.
The insights about medicinal, spritual, fabrics and ornamental are most interesting. The recipes are solid, unique and the color photographic displays of food groupings are nicely done. Interested in more recipes, see Norm VanAken's "The Great Exotic Fruit Book" and his wonderful "New World Cuisine."
Long live the King of Fruit!
A must read.......1999-07-08
I expect you are all wondering what can the question possibly be to which the answer is a pineapple?
Well, let me tell you, the best way to find out is to read the book!
Claudia, in an impossibly modest fashion calls herself at the beginning of this book, a trailing spouse of an international civil servant. I am reminded a bit, of a colleague of mine when I was teaching, who went with her husband to Melbourne when he was transferred there. And the headmistress said in the farewell speech: "She is following her husband to Melbourne"; and we all had a good vision of her, running down the Hume Highway a good distance behind, trailing her husband to Melbourne!
Claudia also describes it as a series of scribbles about a tropical fruit. Well, let me tell you, it's a heck of a lot more than that. I must say that I've always had two views of the pineapple. One was that it was something to eat or to drink; in various savory or sweet situations. And the other was that it was a decoration - the pineapple shape could be used decoratively. And particularly in those extremely elegant C18th, Brighton Pavilion type situations - where its symetrical shape lent itself to finials and stair knobs and pretty things like that - with often a bit of gilding about. And of course in that sort of decoration, you can see the connection between the pineapple and the pinecone, which is the reason for it's having this particular name in English.
And of course both these things are important in the book but there's more, much more. You can read it for the text or for the pictures and the recipes. And I can recommend both although I was going to say I haven't tried any of the recipes yet but one of the ones I wanted to try was the galloping horses, which are the slices of pineapple with that delicious little meaty thing - and I have tried those now and they are very good. So, if you want to make them, there they are. And I'm very pleased that there's that 50s recipe for upside down pineapple cake, which I'd lost my recipe of too, so I'm very pleased to have it back! And I agree with Claudia who disagrees with Jane Grigson that you have to have bits of cherry in it. You know, pineapple rings with bits of cherry in it - you turn it out and it's very good - the 50's got some things right!
It is also a fascinating and immediately accessible array of information. I love books which tell me things that I don't know. Especially things that I didn't know that I didn't know! Claudia goes into every imaginable aspect of the pineapple and I found this absolutely fascinating I have to say. There is the ceremonial, ritual, spiritual angle. There's the medical and of course the culinary. There's the historical and the horticultural. There's the botanical. There's the textile and travel aspects and of course there's the autobiographical. Those who know her will find her again in this book and those who don't will make her acquaintance. They'll learn about her life and her interests and particularly her interest in textiles. It wouldn't occur to a lot of people that a book about a pineapple would be a book very much about textiles but in fact this is.
The passion and affection with which she writes is actually very exciting I think. She is fascinated by the meanings of things and she pursues these through all sorts of quite remote and I suspect extremely difficult places. You also get her interests in galleries and collecting and labeling; her fascination with the linking of proverbs and aphorisms with visual images. Now a lot of you when you received your invitations to this launch would have received a piece of money with it I think. This, here - which Claudia describes as coming from a kind of Chinese Pelligrini's in Singapore. It's actually lucky money. You burn this and it brings you prosperity. And she remarks in the book - in fact, we are all supposed to burn these when we have them but none of us are going to! We are all going to keep them which is probably terribly unlucky! It's made of paper with gold on it. It probably burns well I should think!
As Claudia remarks, this paper has all sorts of things printed on it but this is the first time she has seen pineapples on the money which we burn for good luck. And I'll just read you a bit of the book and you'll see what is in store for you.
"The reason for all these glorious representations of the King of Fruit is that for the Chinese, particularly in south-east Asia, the pineapple has come to be the symbol of prosperity. The inscriptions on the paper money portraying the pineapple say "money comes" and one explanation is that in Hokkien the word for pineapple which sounds phonetically in English like "ong lai" is very like the word that means "prosperity comes". So much of Chinese symbolism refers to something which has a name that sounds just like the word for a virtue or an emotion or a condition. The monosyllabic nature of the Chinese language, in which the same sound can mean many different things, lends itself to a play on words. Decorative motifs are part of a symbolic, homophonic language that uses images to speak. It is a glorious system of visual puns and a logical fascination." One of the really interesting things for me in this book was the way that Claudia makes connections all the way through, between the visual and the proverbial or the aphoristic. She also tells us how delighted she was to discover in the Philippines at least 46 riddles to which the answer is a pineapple. "I wear a crown but I am not a Queen", "I have scales but I am not a fish". And the answer? So there are at least 46 times, and probably more because there are variations - when that answer comes out.
Finally, let me say to you Christmas is coming and to the question about what to buy for presents: I suggest the answer is: "and the answer is a pineapple"! But you'll want one for yourself as well!
Really good fun, informative and lots of exotic experiences.......1999-03-05

Just like it says.......2007-02-03
It's all in there, just like it says. If you want to know about locks and locksmithing, this is a good book to have.
Virgina Locksmith.......2005-11-04
I have several editions of "the Complete Book of Locks and Locksmithing." They're all good. I've learned a lot from them. But the sixth edition is by far the best. I especially like the sections on lock picking, impressioning, and selling safes.
Far from a complete guide.......2003-08-22
I wasn't terribly impressed by this book - it was missing a great deal of basic information, had very incompletely coverage about such traditional skills such as picking locks, manually cutting keys, etc. Instead the author emphasises circumventing locks through alternative methods (for example by shearing off retaining bolts/screws and pulling a core). I found the coverage of large number of locks helpful for locks that I have not come in contact with, but overall I was not very impressed by this book.
Not for beginners or the curious.......2002-09-30
I'm not sure just how this book earned such high praise from supposedly learned people. Or perhaps that's the problem: they already know enough about locks and locksmithing to have no need for the basic information that is so severely lacking in this volume.
As an example, the chapter on automobile locks doesn't offer even a single picture or schematic view of how the rods and linkages of an automobile door lock might be configured behind all that outer metal and inner upholstery. There are two closeup views of specific mechanical devices that might (or might not) be part of a typical door lock, but we have no idea where or how they might (or might not) fit into the overall mechanism. And unless you already know what a "bellcrank" is and how it's used, the picture is meaningless. Moreover the supposedly helpful "exploded" view of a car door lists more than 20 specifically numbered door components and then places those reference numbers in the view for only a half dozen easily reconizable items such as the "armrest." Wow! That's enlightening.
At one point the text mentions that you might be able to open a locked car door by "removing the rear view mirror." and there is zero elaboration.
This sort of shallow and superficial coverage of important topics permeates the text. It might ring with clever insight to an experienced locksmith who has encountered the situation alluded to, but it's meaningless to the layman. Likewise, many of the illustrations are of no value to anyone unititiated to the obscure craft of locksmithing.
If your interested in a Britannica treatise on the history of Phoenecian tomb locks. This the book for you. If you just want some introductory hints and skill you can use around the house, forget it.
Fifth edition continues a tradition of excellence.......2001-12-05
I have all five editions of this book, which dates back at least to 1976 when Tab books was printing them and Carl Roper was the author. I use them as reference materials fairly often when working on locks I'm unfamiliar with. As the years went by, this book was modernized and updated, and some of the older stuff has been cleaned out.
This is the most complete and professional book of locksmithing on the general market, and is an excellent value for people who work on locks. Compared to the restricted market books, Bill Phillips has outdone most of them in presentation and execution of materials. There are no spelling errors or grammatical mistakes, the information is accurate, and it covers an exhaustive number of subjects in the field of locksmithing. If you have an interest in learning a great deal about how different locks are put together, what their applications are, and how to install and service them, you should definitely get this book. If you are studying for a certification test, it is probably the best single purchase you can make for the money. Many individual subjects are not covered in as much depth as is necessary for real satisfaction, but since this book is an overview of the entire field, that is fine. There is plenty of information on rekeying various brands of locks, as well as overviews of installation and adjustment procedures. Although some people complain about this being merely a rehash of manufacturers instructions, it is incredibly convenient to have a reference like this around. If you are servicing an old lock that has been on a door for years, such a set of instructions is a handy thing.
I like what Bill Phillips has done with the book. It is more polished and more practical than the older versions, and it is great to see it stay current with technology. My own book in comparison is quite small, although it covers practical lock opening procedures more thoroughly than "The Complete Book of Locks and Locksmithing" does. People who just want to know how to open locks will find Mr. Phillips book very boring. People who install and service them will find it quite valuable, and will be grateful that it is such a well-crafted book.

Customer Reviews:
Wings to Fly - drama for all!.......2007-10-15
This book is an excellent resource for anyone planning to use drama with students or clients with disabilitites. Many disabilitites are accounted for and the author has tips and encouraging words for all. Told with a sense of humour and from real experience, this book combines practical advise with a belief in human dignity.
A must for all who work in children's theatre!.......2002-05-11
Sally Bailey's book was truly magnificent. it is up to date and well researched. She has a deep understanding of children's needs especially in the world of theatre. I work every day with children with disabilities, I also run theatre and workshops for these great kids and Sally Bailey's book is a must for us all. Her information is also brilliant in that she has obtained her information from her many years experience of running her own theatre classes. I would also recommend it for parents and teachers with children with Special needs/disabilities, she has found ways to make our children laugh and have fun. She writes with such easy clarity for us all to understand. Well done, Sally on a truly marvellous book! Is there another to come??
A must have for anyone interested in Drama or Special Ed........2000-02-25
This book is informative and contains lots of creative ideas for working with Special needs students. Many of the games and techniques I have used in my non-special education drama classes and rehearsals as well. I read "Wings to Fly" over and over and it continues to inspire me. I recommed it to anyone who is interested in working in the Dramatic Arts.
WINGS TO FLY by Sally Bailey.......2000-02-05
This exceptional book is a MUST for anyone who shares the creative arts with students from elementary through high school, those with and without special needs! Sally Bailey not only includes an overview of developmental and physical disabilities, but goes on to cover pertinent issues for any drama or creative arts class; e.g., using drama as a tool to teach other subjects, mainstreaming, behavior management, class composition, working with other personnel, and other basic adaptations for classroom use. She goes on to cover creative drama and improvisational acting classes, puppetry, developing original scripts for performance and specific lesson plans and activities that work educationally and recreationally.
In addition, Sally includes excellent sources of information from books to national organizations on disability, drama, and theatre; as well as a complete checklist for making your facility, staff attitudes, and program barrier-free.
WINGS TO FLY "will teach you how to approach adapting activities and programming to specific situations and individuals, so that you can begin to problem-solve on your own."
Theatre Arts Comes to Everyone.......2000-02-02
This seminal work by Sally Bailey includes a clear understanding of the practical aspects of facilitating drama therapy for children and young adults with special needs. Ms. Bailey's experience at the Bethesda Academy Special Needs program adds depth to her understanding of both physical and cognitive difficulties faced when working with these clients. Her fine background as a playwright, director, and drama therapist permeate the entire book. She offers many practical theatre games that can be used by a variety of populations, as well. Few books in this field address the needs as clearly and articulately as Ms. Bailey.

Inspiration for web designers.......2000-07-11
This book is a great resource for graphic designers looking for ideas for web site illustrations. Broad color schemes, dramatic but often simple posters many of which could be adapted as animations. A beautiful tribute to the great children's authors.

Book Description
Within seven weeks of his enlistment in 1941, Private Carson was shipped to the Philippines-no boot camp, no training, no drill. Captured by the Japanese less than a year later, he endured the Cabanatuan prison camps, nearly died, and then was put aboard a Japanese hellship bound for Japan.
Customer Reviews:
A moving and thoughtful memoir........2000-07-01
In 1942 Andrew Carson, who had joined the military to make a better life for himself, found himself taken prisoner by the Japanese as they began their conquest of the Philippine Islands. Starving, sick, and beaten, Carson survived a series of prison camps until he was finally liberated in 1945.
Carson provides chilling details of life in Cabanatuan in the Philippines and the harrowing voyage on a hell ship to Japan. His memoir is grim but never self-pitying. A true testament to the will to survive.
