Learning to Live w/ Hypo.......2006-09-14

If any of you were the same as me you learned out that you had hypo and the doctor said it's a lot like diabetes so go get a diabetes book and follow the diet. I think the medical field is ill informed about hypo and could take a good lesson from this book. Hypo is a complicated disorder and until you know a lot about it it is hard to control. Hypo for Dummies gives you that knowledge you need. Keep in mind that the writers are practicing eastern medicine physicians, so some things they offer a regular physician of western medicine might not.

This book is a great place to start with though and it gives you the information you need to get started and to possibly follow up with a doctor knowledgable in hypo. I definately recommend the book!

Hypoglycemia Information From A Non-Diabetic Perspective.......2006-08-21

After much searching for a book that would focus in on hypoglycemia, I found Chow & Chow's book. Normally, I'm not big on the dummies series however, this particular book covers a wide range of information from diagnosis (and confirmation that you're not crazy) to helpful ways to "help" yourself combat the ups and downs of the rollercoaster ride.

Typically, books on hypoglycemia are written from the perspective of diabetes or "how-to" weight loss. This book focuses in on the condition without passing judgement on any other condition that you may or may not have.

Highly Recommended Sections:
Part 1 - Addressing Your Ups and Downs - Could This Be Hypoglycemia?
Part 3 - Getting Off Your Bleached-Flour Buns and Treating the Problem
Part 5 - Spinning a Network of Support for Yourself

Great beginner book!.......2006-01-04

I read this book as a refresher and cannot imagine a more in-depth explanation of hypoglycemia and how to deal with it--emotionally and physically for beginners.

It does a great job of describing hypo and discussing the condition with friends and family. In addition, it helps explain what you should eat and when is the best time to do so. The only drawback I found was that the recipes included some of the things they say you should stay away from. However, after eating healthy and regularly, you will find that you can eat some of those things and not feel the effects. At the end of the day, you need to listen to your body and use the book as a tool.

Finally, I would also recommend reading Body for Life by Bill Phillips. His diet is something that hypo can and should use. He delves into the many different types of proteins and carbohydrates. He also has a Body for Life cookbook that I use 3-4 times per week. His cookbook offers easy to make recipes that would surpise you to find the meals so nutritionally sound.

Before going on Weight Watchers and starting with this cookbook, I truly thought delicious food had to be complicated.

The recipes in here totally turned my thinking around. I now realize that little needs to be done to any food item to really enhance it. The soups in this are excellent, the protein dishes delicious (meat/fish/beans), the vegetables great.

A subsequent Weight Watchers cookbook was good, too, but couldn't hold a candle to this one!

This is a great book for those who want to use the past Weight Watchers Program. It is complete with daily food amounts, food lists, menus, and recipes. I use it like a Bible.

The only thing it is missing is a food journal but I types one up on my computer and now my program is complete.

This collection of short poems is an ode to the person whose age is sixty or better. Some are light, describing the pleasures of age and how your perspective changes. When that hurdle is jumped, many of the things that were so critical before now become superficial. This is summed up in the last two lines of the last poem in the book.

But now that I'm sixty I've got to confess
That more often than not, I couldn't care less.

Some of the others are less light hearted, describing the downside of aging. Financial fears, forgetting simple things, having to face young criminals and ways to try to recapture some of the exuberance of youth are all mentioned. However, even these topics are dealt with in a light-hearted manner, so there is never a point where the tone turns depressing.
Whatever your perspective is on turning sixty, this book will make you smile at some of the consequences of reaching that mark. Matthew is a very good poet and his prose will lighten your feelings, no matter how dark they are.

my son gave me this book on my 60th birthday. I grew up with the milne books and read them to my boys. In fact, our oldest, Christopher, is named after Christopher Robin. Get out your old book of Now We Are Six, and keep it next to you while you read this book. So charming. So clever. Makes me feel like a kid again and it makes me smile....alot.

This book is such a classic. I love reading it to my kids, no matter how many times they ask. (And as a homeschool mom of 4, I get asked a lot! I require it for kindergarten though.) And it gets even better the older you get. It is so funny and clever and wise and endearing. We see almost every personality type in the characters. Definitely a must-read, and if you can at all, own a copy of this book! (A good audio version is nice to have too--British accent a must!) It's on every children's book list I've seen, and with good reason--it's stood the test of time. The children in your life will thank you for introducing them to the original and still the best version of Winnie the Pooh.

My kids really like listening to this book. My husband and I can't stand the voice of Pooh Bear though. I think they want him to sound dumb but it can get a little painful. But since the kids love it so much I suffer through.

Wonderfully Clever - Beyond What You'd Expect.......2006-12-20

This right here is another instance of Disney finding spectacular literature, watering down its content, creating beautifully animated visuals and catchy songs to accompy the overall story, and packaging their final adaptation of the work into a wonderful product for the family-focused public. Talk about a winning formula.

We can see that the cornerstone of this formula is "finding spectacular literature." Milne's creation of Pooh and his buddies definitely fits this description. Boy, can Disney pick'em or what?

About three minutes into this book I was laughing. I can't tell you how much I appreciate humor that can stand on its own without constant references to celebrities or sex. I also noticed that the dialogue was VERY Lewis Carroll-esque in nature with its non-sensical approach. Then I found out Milne went to college on a mathematics scholarship. I knew something was up. Heck, one of the chapters even has a proof in it, entitled "Plan to Catch Baby Roo."

Don't rely on Disney to give you the whole Pooh story, check out the original for yourself by purchasing this first book of the series. Heck, I might get me the entire Pooh literary collection now. I was that impressed.

Following the death of Elizabeth Siddal in 1862 and his settling in Chelsea, Rossetti entered on a period of his life -- charted in volume 3 -- that was marked by renewed activity as a painter and increased financial prosperity. The years 1868-1870 covered by volume 4 culminate in his return to writing poetry and the publication in June 1870 of his long-anticipated and widely-read Poems. However, despite the satisfaction that he could take from his standing as a painter and from the fact that he was about to establish himself as a poet, 1868-1870 were troubled years for Rossetti. Problems with his eyesight led him to give up painting for long periods, and to fear that, like his father before him, he would end his days blind. He consulted Sir William Bowman and other leading ophthalmologists, who eased his mind sufficiently for him to return to his easel. This was also the time when he declared his love for Jane Morris, the wife of his long-time friend and admirer William Morris. In his long, moving letters to Janey we come face to face with the satisfactions and frustrations of their relationship. The letters to Janey provide a context for understanding the many paintings and drawings from this period for which she was the model, and for gauging the biographical origins of the sonnets, written at this time for the sequence, The House of Life, an early version of which was included in Poems.Probably the most rewarding letters in the volume concern the preparation of Poems. The letters deal at length with Rossetti's decision to have his poems typeset for distribution to friends, the exhumation of Elizabeth Siddal's coffin to recover the manuscript of his poems, his obsessive care over the physical appearance of the volume, especially the binding , and his efforts at "working the oracle," William Bell Scott's description of his methodically lining up sympathetic reviewers.As with all of Rossetti's correspondence, the letters in volume 4 are replete with pointed and sometimes humorous commentary on an array of people and events, ranging from Edward Burne-Jones's affair with "the Greek damzel," Mary Zambaco, and Frederick Sandys's appropriation of subjects from his pictures, to his unease over Swinburne's uncontrollable drunkenness, and his ominous hatred of Robert Buchanan, the author of the "Fleshly School" attack on his poetry in the Contemporary Review of October 1871, which became a major cause of the disastrous events of the years 1871-1872.
