Freeman Dyson, world-renowned astrophysicist, dreams of exploring the heavens and has designed an inexpensive spaceship to take him there. George Dyson, a brilliant dropout, lives in a tree in coastal British Columbia and is designing a giant seagoing canoe. Both men are intensely, passionately dedicated to their visions. Kenneth Brower explores the relationship of this odd father-son duo, whose goals could hardly be more different yet whose approaches are inevitably alike, with insight and sensitivity.
Book Description
The story of a father and son who search for life's meaning in very different ways. "In the tradition of Carl Sagan and John McPhee, a bracing cerebral voyage past intergalactic hoopla and backwoods retreats."--Kirkus Reviews
Customer Reviews:
Good book.......2005-10-02
I liked the book's story, but not the way it was told. The author interjected his opinion and personal bias too many times for it to be anything biographical. However, it was a neat story.
The Starship and the Canoe.......2003-12-16
If someone asked me to recommend a book to explain the Sixties this would be it. George Dyson, son of well-known physicist Freeman Dyson, was raised in a rarefied academic atmosphere. He walked away from that life at sixteen, not because of random rebellion but because this truly was what he needed to do.
In this book author Kenneth Brower alternates the telling of the divergent lives of these two men. As a result he captures the generational tension of an era.
Freeman Dyson was a product not only of the Fifties but of the flowing optimism of those years that today seems unimaginable. Truly, back then if one could think it then it was possible. One of the ideas Freeman thought possible was project Orion, a huge space vehicle propelled by external nuclear explosions. In the beginning years Freeman actually expected to journey across the solar system in Orion.
George's life was nearly the diametric opposite of his father's. He wound up on the Canadian Pacific shore, living in a tree house and designing ocean-going canoes. The irony is that he found a universe to explore in his canoes - the coasts and islands of the Canadian Northwest and Alaska.
In a fractal sense, both physically and culturally, George's universe was as infinite as his father's. And while he continues to explore it to this day, his father never got into his universe more than the cruising altitude of a 737.
I am nearly the same age as George, long enough into my life to wonder what I've done with it. Frankly, I envy not just George's vision but his ability to follow it.
I admire his father's pursuit as well. In much of the story there is clear tension between father and son, yet in the end some sort of meeting of minds happens.
Even though this book was written over twenty-five years ago it offers a still-fresh notion of the gulfs between people, and how our failures in bridging these distances cause us to forsake a real future.
splendid look into the lives of an eccentric father and son.......2001-09-30
The Starship and the Canoe is not a book on kayaking, any more than A Tale of Two Cities is a Victorian travelogue. I felt as though I had to correct that impression created by Amazon's page on the book. Although it is twenty-five years old now, it remains a vital and engrossing tale of a father and son separated not only by the familiar gulf of misunderstanding and culture shock, but by their remarkable journeys, some through the vast and perilous estates of the mind, some through the cold and sparsely settled inlets and bays of the Queen Charlotte Sound and the Pacific shoreline of Alaska and British Columbia.
The father and son are celebrated physicist (and author in his own right) Freeman Dyson and kayaker, tree-dweller, solo marine traveller (and also an author) George Dyson. In the wild, anarchic 1970s, author Kenneth Brower (who, it turns out, is also a friend of George's) takes us along with George and Freeman as they explore and plan explorations. His book is engrossing and one feels as though one has actually spent time with these fascinating, sometimes incredibly eccentric and singular men.
Freeman Dyson, an influential theoretical physicist, spent a great deal of time in the optimistic 1950s and 1960s preparing to push the New Frontier outward on nuclear explosion-powered spacecraft. This work, Project Orion, was supported and funded by NASA and the US Air Force until the atmospheric nuclear test ban, competition for funding from Project Apollo and the Vietnam War finally killed the project's funding leaving him and fellow physicist Ted Taylor to develop the concept further.
Together, the two men pushed the original project's concepts to their ultimate limits, and Project Orion grew to become spacecraft the size of Chicago leaving for nearby stars - so far, however, only in the minds of Dyson, Taylor, and those of us who have become enraptured by the concept of Orion.
Later, son George Dyson ventures up and down the Pacific Coast from California northwards before finally settling (sort of) in the area between Vancouver and the glaciers of Alaska, sometimes living in a treehouse at the top of a tall and spindly fir, sometimes setting off from southern British Columbia up the Queen Charlotte Strait, meeting people on the islands of the strait in voyages oddly reminiscent of Antoine du Saint-Exupery's Le Petit Prince. Brower narrates these journeys with unobtrusive wryness, allowing the reader to chuckle at the interplay between author and subject as they paddle to and for between Alaska and Canada.
Buy this book. Read it. Few other books reward their readers as richly as the Starship and the Canoe.
Explore two frontiers with one family........1999-05-17
The Dyson's, Freeman and George, are father and son. Freeman, a nobel laureat physicist, has his sights set on the stars. George lives in a tree house in British Columbia and has combined modern materials and ancient techniques to build the largest canoe on the inland water way. See what happens when they reunite in the company of a pod of killer whales.
This is my second read. Not my usual practice.
My one major disappointment is the exclusion from this paperback edition of a section about Freeman Dyson's work on a "safe" nuclear reactor. I found this section particularly interesting because of the specific subject and because of the learning and work principles illustrated. This was an inappropriate job of editing.
Read, enjoy and learn about learning and living and relating in our complex and conflicting world.
How two very different people are so much alike.......1997-11-04
As both an outdoor loving ocean kayaker and an ardent supporter of space exploration, I found this book a synthesis of two different worlds that are difficult to unite in today's political climate. This book was way ahead of its time.

Back Pain Gone.......2007-08-16
Twice in my life I have experienced debilitating back pain: twenty years ago, which resulted in a successful spinal fusion, and eight weeks ago--a bolt of electricity shot through my lower back, not once but twice. Ouch! Not wanting to relive my earlier experience, I read Healing Back Pain Naturally from cover to cover and applied the principles as I read.
Art Brownstein addresses all aspects of back pain from the various causes of the pain to principles of self healing. There are excellent photographs and written descriptions of stretches which promote healing. He also factors in the role stress plays and includes several breathing/relaxation/visualization techniques to practice. He covers nutrition, returning to work and to play, and emotional healing. A list of recommended reading is included for those who wish to explore furthur.
At this time, I am 90% healed. Just have to stick with the program everyday. And I will.
At Least Do Phase I For One Week Before Giving Up On This Program.......2007-07-10
I have purchased 6 of these books, I have given 5 of them to friends who are suffering from back pain or know some one who is. The ones who have started the program and done at least the Phase I exercises have reduced their pain and their condition has improved. I bought the first book because one of my friends was in great pain and chiropractic adjustments had not helped, he did not have insurance nor money for MRI or Orthopedic Medicine, so I bought the book, read it from cover to cover, did the exercises myself and ask my friend to do them, at first he was skeptical and felt that if doctor visits, pain medication, girdles and chiropractors had not helped "Do you think exercises on the floor will help me? You are crazy." Well I convinced him that he had nothing to lose by trying. I showed him the book and I took him through all the Phase I exercises, he did those for a week and he noticed that the pain seemed to be less intense: "May be we are onto something" he said. Within a month, he could sleep better and now a few years later he is almost pain-free, he has confessed that when he does not do the exercises the pain seems to come back, so every night and morning he does the Phase I exercises only, I believe that if he did all three phases he would probably fix his problem which he thinks is a herniated disk. I do the exercises my self and I am much more flexible, once I helped a friend unload a heavy bag from the trunk of the car and my back went out. I rested on my back for one day and did the exercises and within a week I was feeling better.
Thanks Doctor Brownstein, you have truly helped lots of people with this book.
These are my recommendations to heal your back.
1. Buy a hard mattress, go to the furniture store that caters to the Chinese or Korean community and buy a Korean made mattress, they are hard.
2. Buy this book, preferably the hard cover edition and read as much as you can and do at least the Phase I exercises. If you are in extreme pain you may only be able to do the first exercise of the Phase I set of exercises only, this is why it is important you read the chapters that precede the exercises so you understand how the back works and what could go wrong with it and what you need to do when something goes wrong with it.
3. Do at least the Phase I exercises. Do all the exercises if possible, Phase I through Phase III.
4. Enroll in a Yoga class.
In the reviews I see that some people claim that they tried this program and did not work for them. I can only say that if you did the exercises for one or two days and gave up, then you have truly denied yourself from the great benefits that this program can bring. You need to do at least the Phase I exercises one month everyday--faithfully; then make a judgment on whether this program is beneficial.
Best wishes to all.
Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!.......2006-05-02
To the author, a great big THANK YOU! I have read dozens of books about back pain, been to physiotherapists and doctors, taken medication and tried numerous exercise programs, and nothing worked. However, thanks to this book, I finally have relief from long-term, chronic back pain.(Herniated disk in lower back.)
This book is worth the cover price just for the exercises alone. I have been completing the Phase 1 exercises on a daily basis and already I can put on my socks and pants with ease, bend over to dry my feet when I get out of the shower, easily get in and out of bed without pain, etc. I even sat through a 2-hour workshop today and felt no pain when I stood up. This would have been impossible previously. For example, a couple months ago, I went to a restaurant with friends and when I stood up at the end of the meal, I felt so much pain in my back and hip that I could not stand up straight. Not now! I can stand up straight and I am pain-free.
I will admit to having some doubts about the mind-body connection referred to in the book. However, it is all so well presented, that I am willing to consider it. That aside, I think the exercises alone provide so much pain relief that it is still a very valuable book. I am going to buy it to give to a couple people as gifts.
It works!.......2006-02-28
Great investment for those with back pain. Just from bits and pieces of what I have read and practiced so far, I've been able to recover from a recent back injury in a very short period of time and will hopefully lead to a pain-free back for life.
The "Bible" of Back Care.......2005-12-16
This book is awesome and helped me through a lot of pain during a very difficult time time in my life. It's a positive book filled with great advise, an awesome "if I can do it, you can too" story by the author, and is well written and easy to read. I highly recommend it for anyone dealing with any kind of physical pain, not just back pain!

Mrs. Fields Best-130 Delicious Cookie and Dessert Recipes.......2004-07-21
I have just received my sixth copy of Mrs. Fields Best Cookie Book Ever. My daugher found it at the library-very old, yellow, torn. She and her daughters were writing recipes and trying recipes from it and they are delicious. Maybe this is an old cookbook but it keeps up with modern times. Now all my daughters and two granddaughters have it. What a rare find! Most were brand new and bought used and were in perfect condition. Most not even out of wrappers.
good one to have in the kitchen.......2002-04-28
I like the fact that there's a variety of different cookies.
I've also made quiet a number of them. All taste pretty good.
Flavor combinations of the cookies surprised me at first but
proven good aroma and pleasing on the palet. My favorite is
the Banana chocolate chip cookies.Except I replace the chocolate chips for white chocolate chips it brings out the flavor of the bananas. The only thing I don't like about this book is that
I wish it had more recipes.
My favorite cookie book!.......2001-12-04
This is my favorite cookie cookbook. Pictures of every recipe, is what makes it special. I'm on my second copy.
first impressions.......2001-09-15
"Cookies" is almost synonymous with "Mrs. Fields" and that's what attracted me to this book. I expected Mrs. Fields' recipe for her famous chocolate chip cookies to be revealed -- unfortunately, it isn't. The recipes are standard cookie recipes, with an emphasis on chocolate chip types. There's even one recipe that calls for the use of all kinds (semisweet, white, bittersweet) in one cookie. What I like are the pictures. The cookies look just like the ones I make at home and that, to me, is reassuring. I also like the straightforward way in which the recipes are presented. They all look simple and easy to do. The book encourages and gives one the confidence to go into the kitchen and bake.
Mrs.Fields Great Cookies!!!.......2001-02-26
This is the most tastiest book in the world!!!! The recipes in here are decadent. This is my favourite cookie book in the world!!! I try to bake 1 recipe from it a week and it is an enjoyable experience!!!

Excellent first, or only, book on breeding the most common aquarium fish. Its all here - equipment, temperature, diet, and other master's secrets. You are sure to have success using this guide. And the price is great!
Great pictures and highly detailed.......2001-04-21
This book covers almost 30 of the most commonly held aquarium fishes giving detailed descriptions on each covering feeding, water parameters (pH, dH and temperature) and of course breeding. In addition, there are several pictures displaying each species including fry and eggs. All in all a good book which gets you started right away.

Great book........2007-07-19
I'm not much for writing book reviews but had to for this one. I have alot of wood working books and this may be my favorite one. BUY IT you'll like it.
Shaker Furniture Making "Barney-Style".......2003-03-11
This book is fantastic. Detailed pictures, lists of required tools and woods, and step-by-step instructions help you create great-looking Shaker furniture. I used this book to create a Shaker blanket chest, which was my second "large" woodworking project. The quality of results surpassed my expectations. This book is a must for the beginning woodworker who wants to produce quality items while at the same time learning or re-learning basic techniques.
Just like having Norm there with you!.......1999-01-07
Perhaps I'm biased, I think Norm is to woodworking what Carl Sagan was to science. The projects are described in detail with Norm's hand on your shoulder. Complete and well detailed with out wasting time. I recommend this book and the rest of Norm's books highly.
very good;excellent instruction; furniture clean.......1997-12-23
I bought one of Norm Abram's book on outdoor furniture. I built the adirondack chairs, and then the garden bench. I learned alot, they turned out very well, and I subsequently bought all his other manuals. I wish he'd do some more. His plans and choices of projects are the best among the current title offered.

A definitive, beutifully illustrated history of and reference guide to the world's most popular flower, by two of the world's favorite and most respected gardening experts.
Customer Reviews:
the history of the rose.......2006-06-17
I learned more from reading "Quest for the Rose" than any other horticulture book I have read. It is a fascinating book. After reading "In Search of Lost Roses" I became very interested in roses throughout history. Humans have been breeding roses for different characteristics for thousands of years. This book teaches modern rose lovers practical lessons about different varieties of roses: which roses grow well in hot climates, or dry climates, or the most northern climates, which grow tall and will clamber up a nearby tree or wall, and which will stay small and compact. All these characteristics are determined by the plant's ancestors, and the country of their origins. As an example, I had always heard that it is very hard to find a cold-hardy yellow rose. "Quest for the Rose" explains that the genetics that favor a yellow bloom originated in the most uniformly warm climates of the world. If you love roses, and are curious about their development over the years, you will really enjoy this book. Make sure to also read "In Search of Lost Roses", about a horticulturist's discovery of historic roses.
The best rose book published!.......1999-09-15
The importance of this book in serious rose research lies in the photographs of the roses in their growing habitat. Most rose books show close-ups of the flowers, rather than the entire bush, making it difficult to see how large the flowers are in relation to the leaves and the plant. Seeing the plants growth habit is also important in choosing a rose, which this book illustrates most admirably. In addition, the historical facts and cultivation information reward the researcher with the most complete volume on roses published to date. If you must buy only one rose book, this is the one to own!
Wonderful complete rose guidebook. Great pictures'.......1998-04-16
This book provides an in depth history of the rose, plus modern roses. It gives good descriptions of the plant, its care and even its scent. Lots of good photographs

5 stars for content.......2006-07-06
I'm happy to see that this book is still being sold. It was my bible when I had my kids over 20 years ago and it's the one book I would give to any woman who is considering breastfeeding. Straightforward, realistic, full of practical tips and loaded with information. Beats any other book on breastfeeding that I've ever read. It's the reason I was able to nurse each of my three kids until they were over a year old.
This is the book that kept me going........2004-06-28
An excellent resource that I turned to many times over the course of almost five years, for solutions to problems as well as just the pleasure of reading such an informative, thorough book. It combines the practical with the scientific. I found it when my second baby was six weeks old. To our surprise and dismay she had lost weight at her first newborn checkup and had continued to gain weight poorly. At each feeding I would nurse her, then pump, then give her a bottle, and by then it would be time to start all over again; she still gained poorly. I had an 19 month old as well, whom I had nursed successfully while working full time. All the time and emotional energy focused on my newborn's feeding could not continue. I was incredibly sad at the thought of having to stop nursing, but it seemed the only choice. I was in the bookstore just before my final decision to stop nursing, and I found this book. It changed everything. I found answers to my questions, solutions to my problems, and the motivation to keep going. I nursed as often as possible, sometimes every hour, stopped pumping, and gave just one bottle per day, around dinnertime, instead of at every feeding. My baby started gaining the way she should. I continued to nurse her for sixteen months. I have Karen Pryor to thank for turning things around. We had a third child two years later, successfully breasfed for almost 2 years. I have given this book to all first time moms along with the baby gift.
The most useful breastfeeding book I found.......2004-04-10
I had a copy of the womanly art of breastfeeding and found it to be long on preaching the joys of breastfeeding and short on addressing real concerns and problems! This is the book I dogeared and referred to again and again. It is practical, friendly, and full of useful information I didn't find anywhere else. There is a long bibliography of sources at the back, but you also get the sense that you are being talked to by experienced realistic moms who are sure you can do this - much more helpful when you feel desperate at 2 AM in the first week than another lecture on how wonderful and easy this is supposed to be!
I nursed my first baby until he was 18 months old, after a very rocky start - took me three days to get him to nurse at all, and then it took 45 minutes to latch him on properly for a while after that! So I really appreciated any guide that admitted how hard it can be to start breastfeeding and gave a wide variety of practical advice on the real problems. I tossed a lot of popular books that carried on about how breastfeeding is easy and natural and wonderful - it was all that once we got over the hard part, but getting over the hard part was when I needed good advice and real facts!
Some of the unusual information included here - baby behavior, innate parent behavior, nursing frequency and patterns, how nursing changes as the baby develops, how to take good care of yourself physically and emotionally. There is a great chapter for working/pumping mothers, and even some advice on how to keep the house tidy enough so it doesn't depress you, with a minimum of effort. Also - getting your milk back when you had to stop nursing for a little while, nursing toddlers, tandem nursing, weaning, pretty much any breastfeeding topic you can think of seems to be covered.
The index is not great (you can't find 'thrush' or 'pain' in it, even though there is a section on yeast infections), but I read the whole book and didn't have much trouble finding what I needed in it after that. Several chapters deal with age specific information ('birth to six weeks' etc) which made it easy to look up problems I was having in that particular time period.
1973-2003.......2003-12-04
I am purchasing a copy of this for my daughter-in-law,who is expecting a baby any day and is going to nurse the baby. I used this book 30 years ago for my support and information when nursing my first child and I know it will be just as relevant today. I find it fascinating that there are other women who wrote reviews praising this book from using it 30+ years ago. Not many things are as worthwhile today as in they were in the 60's and 70's. That must make this book a CLASSIC!!!!!!!Laurel Ryan, Grafton, Ohio
A Wonderful Mother's Companion;Believe in Yourself.......2003-02-08
... It was read prior to my daughter's birth and constantly referred to while I nursed her.I was no longer unsure of myself due to lack of information and I recommended it to girls who were first time Moms in the hospital when I had my fourth child. My daughter had a baby three years ago with some medical problems and I met Moms and their Moms that were terribly grateful for a reference book so their baby could continue to be nursed and not believe the short interruption would ruin their desire for the baby to be a nursed baby. My daughter needed to relactate and the hospital gave them the machines to make it possible, knowing ,especially babies who have had a rough start need to be nursed even more for their health if the parent is willing to follow the instructions and there is a lot of support for mothers to nurse, knowing what we do today about breastfeeding. For "To Be" Mothers this is a wonderful gift for them to understand and decide if they are going to breastfeed, and to stand up to the bullies who usually have weird reasons why they oppose breast feeding. Instead of being intimidated, you will wonder which category they come from, and you will be a much stronger , confident mother. Mrs Symmington

Not that good.......2001-01-16
This book is a collection of a diverse set of Goya's works exhibited at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It includes a lot of Goya's famous works but not enough. If you want to see more of Goya's works, look else where. This book doesn't contain enough and that is why I gave it 2 stars.

From the supplier: The exhibition 'Goya: Another Look,' organized by the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Lille, is a small, focused exhibition, but somehow disappointing. The individual pictures have more impact than the exhibition as a whole. The show highlights the diversity of Goya's work at the expense of consistency or a coherent thesis. The opportunity to see these fine paintings is valuable in itself, however.

An accurate and informative revelation of what daily life was like for those who were held prisoner .......2006-05-03
Knowledgeably compiled and expertly edited by retired academician and scholar Minoru Kiyota, The Case Of The Japanese Americans During World War II: Suppression Of Civil Liberty is a comprehensive study of the incarcerated treatment of the 112,000 Japanese-Americans imprisoned in a system of camps in America after the Pearl Harbor attack that launched America's overt involvement in World War II. Illustrated by the experiences of many individual Japanese American ordeals in these relocation camps, The Case Of The Japanese Americans During World War II is an accurate and informative revelation of what daily life was like for those who were held prisoner -- some of whose sons took service in the American armed forces European Theatre campaigns. The Case Of The Japanese Americans During World War II is very strongly recommended to all readers searching for a complete, thorough, and expansive knowledge of American Government's treatment of Japanese Americans, treatment which has a continuing relevance in this present era of a "War on Terrorism" and Islamic Americans.
