Book Description
Irving Strawder was born in Moultrie, GA in 1921. He was the youngest son in a family of seven sons and two daughters. His younger sister, Opal, gave him the soldier's diary which inspired this book. He received his formal education in the Moultrie Public School System. In 1942 he was drafted and served about two-and-one-half years in the US Army. Today he is retired and living in Moultrie.
Grinning From Ear to Ear tells the story of a young soldier away from home for the first time. He turned twenty a few weeks after he was sworn into the Army. He was sent to Europe in WWII. This story is true. The characters are real people. They have different names and perhaps were in different places; the stories are true but may not be in exact chronological order but historically it it true; it all happened to Irving Strawder.
This is a lighthearted story of a young south Georgia solder's experiences in the Army during World War II. Anyone who has been in a war or had a son in a war or had a brother in a war or had a husband in war can identify with the young Irving as he experiences more life in two-and-one-half years than many people do in fifty years.

A fine and inspiring book.......2006-07-29
I'm moved to add my positive review after noticing the negative one by S Hadley.
I found this book full of insight on the nuts and bolts of the running process as opposed to most of the other books I've read that take form as a given and instead focus on training regimes. I see it as a primer, a well thought out and very useful one: you can read it cover to cover or just open it and pick up some technical point to practice on your next run. It does mention the like of Haile Gebrselassie, Sebastian Coe and Merlene Ottey as role models but I found this inspiring and their form something to aspire to rather than the glib comment S Hadley alludes to.
One last thing. I bought the book 2 months ago and although my times have not come down noticably, my recovery rate and overall fatigue after a long run has diminished remarkably. I look forward to a largely injury free running future.
Seems like a rough-draft with missing pages/chapters.......2006-07-23
The message of this book is simple: if you want to run better, simply run like Haile Gebr. Of course, there's no hint as to how to run like Gebr, but there are pretty pictures and oodles of "ideas" which totally lack any sort of flesh. The book is sporadic, repetitive and offers no useful examples. The concept of a new, almost holistic approach to running is interesting, but almost completely unexplored after the introduction.
I've attempted many of the techniques and found my running to quickly become less enjoyable, more labored and a lot slower. I'm an advanced runner and found only a handful of quotes to be useful. I see almost no purpose at all for a novice runner to read between these covers.

Excellent reading for living a better life.......2007-08-13
I would recommend this little book for anyone who wants to understand life and how to learn to live his or her life better. It is a very good starter for David Viscotts' books of which I started with "Emotionally Free" and now I have bought 5 of his books. This book is made up with short passages and so it is easy to read. Each passage has a short ending paragraph which serves like a prayer. Viscott writes in clarity and his insight into life enables him to write powerful and enlightening sentences that speak to hearts. His books help me a lot personally.
A gift from God.......2006-08-28
I agree with what everyone else has written. This book has become my steady companion. I randomly turn to a chapter and find it always speaks to where I am. While visiting my husband's grave I turned to "Accept Your Death". According to the book death is not an option so live life deliberately.
I thank David Viscott for writing this book. Is there a sequel?
excellent.......2006-08-08
This book is fantastic!! I have read it over and over again. I have also recommended it to numerous people. It's easy to read and understand. I keep it by my bedside and read a few chapters each night. I highly recommend it!
SIMPLY PERFECT!!.......2005-09-27
I just ordered another copy - I have given my past three copies to friends in their times of need. I consider this book a gift from God. Simply written and sometimes brutally direct, any page will enlighten your day. Undoubtedly the best gift in the smallest package I have ever received!
Something we all need.......2002-06-20
This book is for everybody. We all need words of encouragement and David Viscott delivers. Every passage is something we as people can relate to everyday. When your down you can open this book to any page and find something to bring you right back up! Read a passage and take a few minutes to let it soak in and continue on with your day. My favorite,"What other people think of you is none of your business." Beautiful.

Since 1999, the Best American Recipe series has offered top yearly formulas from books, magazines, the Internet, and even product labels. The Best American Recipes 2002-2003, edited by series founder Fran McCullough with Molly Stevens, offers 150 doable recipes that range from starters to desserts and drinks. The selection embraces both the dressy and the down-home, ranging from, say, Porcini Mushroom and Red Onion Tart to Shrimp with Garlic and Toasted Bread Crumbs. Dessert stopovers include Butter Toffee Crunch Shortbread and Valentino's not-to-be missed Chocolate Truffle Cake.
Are these the year's best recipes? It doesn't really matter, as McCullough has cast her net wide and drawn in a diversely appetizing selection. With a section on the year in food (sage, for example, is dubbed the herb cooks wanted "more than a little of lately"); headnotes that put the recipes in context ("New riffs on guacamole seems to spring up every year," say the authors in respect to Guacamole with Lemon and Roasted Corn); and Cook's Notes that make the recipes even more useful ("you can extend the marinating ... it will only add to the flavor," advise the authors of Pork Stew with Leeks, Orange, and Mint), the book is a something-for-everyone addition to a welcome tradition. Readers will also enjoy the foreword from Kitchen Confidential author Anthony Bourdain, which ends with a characteristic injunction to "cook free or die." --Arthur Boehm

Customer Reviews:
McCullough and Hamlin triumph in 1999 and 2000!.......2004-09-08
This review refers to "Best American Recipes 2000." I noticed that Amazon hasn't always segregated these reviews by year, so I include this information. The review for the 1999 edition is at the bottom, due to Amazon's silliness with this.
I have trusted Fran McCullough ever since she co-authored "Great Food Without Fuss," another book full of easy-but-perfect and unusual recipes. I also loved McCullough and Hamlin's "Best American Recipes 1999," so I bought this for my birthday. WOW. I have had it for 2 weeks, and I cannot stop cooking from it. Just from browsing all the books in "Best American Recipes" series so far, I get the feeling that McCullough/Hamlin is the best co-author team in the series, but I haven't had the others as long, so I'll report back when I've cooked my way through the later ones.
So far, I have made:
Stuffed French Toast with Lemon-Cheese Filling and Blueberries: impressed even the most jaded of palates
Puffy Maine Pancakes: the classic Dutch baby pancake
Fresh Fig, Gorgonzola, and Walnut Salad with Warm Port Vinaigrette: worth the price of the book for the salad dressing alone (requires reducing 1 cup of nonvintage port)
Pasta with Baked Tomato Sauce: so easy, creamy, and lovely, but without any cream
Watermelon Salsa: a salad, actually. My husband and I devoured the recipe that "serves 4," and not because the recipe was skimpy!
Wine Grapes, Walnuts, and Olives: a magical transformation of basic high-quality ingredients. Great as a side dish, or on pasta.
All have perfect directions, incredible flavor, and helpful notes. Main dishes come with a "serve with" menu, with all the recipes included in the book. I love that! Who can resist a foolproof, perfect dinner party menu?
Both this book and the 1999 book have a whole menu for Thanksgiving dinner, including the turkey. Most years, I scour my hundreds of cookbooks and cooking magazines for the perfect menu, never trusting that a particular side dish or dessert will come out as promised. This Thanksgiving, the only hard thing will be deciding between the 1999 and the 2000 menus from the "Best American Recipes" series. From me, this is strong praise, as I have never in my 30+ years of cooking made a whole menu as written from a book or magazine.
Enjoy!
1999:
This review refers to "Best American Recipes 1999." Amazon sometimes prints a copy of the review under a different edition.
McCullough and Hamlin are a great team. They went to great lengths emailing everyone in the food world asking for the best recipes published in the preceding year. They came up with some real winners.
Lately, I'm addicted to the Watermelon Milkshake (yes, where else would you get a recipe that sounds so bad and tastes so good?) I have been freezing the watermelon so I can use Greek (drained) nonfat yogurt and still get that thick and frosty, made-with-ice-cream mouth feel. Lest you think I only like the book for inspiration and doctor/change the recipes, this is not true. I'm sure the vanilla ice cream version would blow my mind (and my diet!).
The Blueberry Lemonade is wonderful, and again, I never would have thought of it. Why not make a lighter, fresher version of blueberry pie in a glass? It's hot today, so I made mine in the blender with ice cubes instead of water.
Obviously, I really appreciate that every year of this series includes some non-alcoholic beverages that delight the taste buds. Enough of sickly-sweet punches!
Actually, clear and consistent goals are things that make this series great. Clearly, there is a Thanksgiving menu. Clearly, there are the nonalcoholic drinks. Clearly, there are summer salads and winter sides. Consistently, there are lovely brunch/breakfast specialties, often with the comment that one is perfect for the morning after Christmas. McCullough and Hamlin know how real people cook, what recipes they need, and they deliver!
Butter and Egg Soup For Newlyweds was as good as any "amuse buche" at a fancy restaurant, and I made it at the last minute on my own birthday!
This book has enticing recipe after recipe, with clear descriptions, clear directions, and perfect results. The "cook's note" next to each recipe helps, as does the suggested "serve with" menu and wine selection.
The suggested menus and wines disappear starting in 2003. I DO hope they are back for 2005!
Great Techniques -- Great Recipes.......2002-12-09
I am one of those cooks that has never had any formal training (beyond my mother/grandmother) -- so I appreciate the teaching and conversation beyond the recipe. For example, the book details homemade chicken soup and the technique for making an excellent base. This lets me experiment and expand on the ingredients that I like -- so that I can build my "perfect" recipe.
The recipes have all turned out well and at the same time, have taught me a lot about cooking. This is an excellent book for an aspiring home cook.
Great recipes.......2002-10-22
Now that I have gone through this cookbook, I need to go back and find the similar recipe books McCullough has done for the last four years. If this one is any indication, I predict that I will think I died and went to heaven.
I cannot wait to try some of the recipes that I earmarked in this book--including some unusual soups, the Garlicky Sun-Dried Tomato Spread (looks good AND easy!), a salad made with prosciutto and sugar snap peas, an Italian beef stew, and more desserts than I have any right to want to taste!
I especially liked the conversational tone of the book, the way the recipes are introduced and the tips that accompany them. It's kind of quirky, and I liked that!
Best Recipes.......2002-08-30
This series is great.
Don't be put off by the boring format.
Not one recipe tried has been less than it promises.
I like them so much I've bought them all.
Collection from multiple sources of Great Recipes.......2002-01-11
Here is what some of us do--collect recipes from all kinds of varying sources, sorted through and published in book form.
Tried few recipes thus far, and each lives up to rating: Scallop and Corn Chowder, unique Ricotta Hot Cakes with Honeycomb butter, Port-and-Black-Currant Glazed Chicken Thighs,Roasted Potatoes with Garlic,Lemon and Oregano.
For a different closing meal treat, try "Roasted Apricots with Sugared Pecans and Dulce de Leche. It's simple and sooo sooo good!
Unique--simple--- zipped up kind of cuisine, with outstanding variety of cuisines and sources--- great collection for varying levels of cook levels. Neat feature is wine offerings with each entree suggested.

Jesse James and his crew will tap the experts used on the number one Discovery Channel show, Monster Garage, to create a comprehensive guide to customizing your car, motorcycle, mini-van, pick-up truck, toaster, . . . you get the idea. Each section will take you through the process of creating a Monster custom, from planning the project, through building custom bodywork, to adding bolt-on bits and custom paint.
Customer Reviews:
Nice picture book..........2007-05-21
...but not very useful for anything else. Monster Garage's How to Customize Damn Near Anything is nothing more than the best bits from the other three books in the series: Fabricate, Weld and Paint. But if you consider that the oher three books aren't up to par, the "best bits" do not amount to much. It's not even of interest to Monster Garage fans as, like the other three books, there is nary a mention of Monster Garage or Jesse James.

Customer Reviews:
A must- read before taking any diet pills as there are RISKS and BENEFITS .......2005-12-07
First off, I have personal experience with one of the drugs listed in the book - Meridia. For me, it was a great aid, reducing my appetite and getting me to the point where I lost 26 pounds in short order.
However, I'm not sure if I'd have taken it after reading this book. It is an excellent overview to what is available right now, although even at its publication date, new products were already in the pipeline, so I wouldn't expect this book to stay current for long...but it might be long enough for you to decide which medicines, if any, might work for you.
Readers might also want to check the Consumer Reports website, has come out with a list of the 12 "highest risk" drugs and Meridia, one of the weight loss drugs, is on that ( the entire article and risks can be seen at their website).
It should be kept in mind that the chances of side effects, even for the high risk drugs, are still small, but does raise some concerns about the way drugs are researched, tested and processed these days.
With that in mind, read this book as a starting point and then do a search of even more relevant or current articles, from the latest releases to television reports.
Now, more than ever, consumers need to do their own legwork, not take medicine blindly, simply because it is prescribed and be aware of the total picture.
If you are very obsese, perhaps the benefits outweigh the risks. For someone who is 10 -20 pounds overweight might have a far harder choice to make - take the chance, however small of liver, kidney and heart damage - or lose the weight?
The skinny on diet pills !.......2003-09-17
The other day a gal wrote to a fitness website I am on and said," I am tired of dieting and exercising, please tell me what diet pill I can take and just get skinny quick."
After reading "The Diet Pill Guide" I was able to tell her, there is no magic pill, just as most of sadly knew all along.
The Diet Pill book lists over the counter, prescription and other supplements sold for weight loss. It lists products, brand names, ingredients, how sold, background and research, product claims, side effects, precautions and other information.
A number of products are covered. Everything from A Aoqili Slim Soap (yes a soap that claims it makes you skinny as you wash with it), to Z zhi shi (citrus rinds of the bitter orange). And lots in between. Here you can learn the truth about slim fast , bee pollen, locust root, ginger, 5HTP and more. The good (green tea) the bad (fat trapper) and the ugly (ephedra) are all covered.
A handy index at the back of the book makes it easy to look up the pill you were thinking of popping. One drawback is the book does not cover starch blockers. Since the book was published in 2002 starch blockers which are becoming more popular should have been included. Hence the 4 instead of 5 star rating.
Overall a great little reference!
