A History of Immunology
ASIN: 019506447X |
Book Description
This fascinating intellectual history is the first critical study of the work of Elie Metchnikoff, the founding father of modern immunology. Metchnikoff authored and championed the theory that phagocytic cells actively defend the host body against pathogens and diseased cells. His program developed from comparative embryological studies that sought to establish genealogical relations between species at the dawn of the Darwinian revolution. In this scientific biography, Tauber and Chernyak explore ore Metchnikoff's development as an embryologist, showing how it prepared him to propose his theory of host-pathogen interaction. They discuss the profound impact of Darwin's theory of evolution on Metchnikoff's progress, and the influence of 19th century debates on vitalism, teleology, and mechanism. As a case study of scientific discovery, this work offers lucid insight into the process of creative science and its dependence on cultural and philosophic sources. Immunologists and historians of science and medicine will find it an absorbing and accessible account of a remarkable individual.
Book Description
Coping with the end of a relationship is one of the most common experiences a person faces, yet few are prepared for the intense shock, pain, and frustration that is involved. How to Mend a Broken Heart is a step-by-step program for dealing with loss brought about by breakup, divorce, separation, end of a friendship--even custody disputes and job termination. This book identifies the predictable emotional stages following a loss, provides reassuring strategies for coping, and emphasizes strength and knowledge that one can gain for the future.

Close to Receiving Actual Therapy after the Broken Heart.......2004-10-11
Well, first, I think everyone of us needs to acknowledge the heart is broken before reading anything or seeking any help. I read through this book and the points the author made are remarkable. People always say, "You get hurt. What things are you doing to make you feel better?" Well, seriously follow the guide the author tells you. I went through a painful breakup and was under the partial program. The path this book suggested is very similar to what I was told in the partial program. I did what the partial program people told me and it worked. After the broken heart, the first thing is really giving the attention and the care. Focus on yourself. This book has good tips about how to do so. Put your broken heart into what she says and try to understand. Feel it as the pain and anger comes. It is ok. Practice what she says. It is ok to take good care of yourself.
Again, one book is not going to fix it all. There are so many layers you need to explore and acknowledge. There are so much garbage you have inherited from the past, especially your early childhood experience. You cannot just expect you will feel completely good after one reading. However, try to explore what the author says. If you are searching for "do things to feel better", read this book and do what the author suggests. Identify what the author says and do what the author told you. Remind yourself you might have the tendency to withdraw or try self-medicating yourself. You will have that tendency because you are human. Stay in presence.
This book also offers you as an extra support for you to understand many of us go through heartbreaks. We just all do. The heart will hurt and it will seem like it is forever. But until we can truly honor the pain can we truly heal. It is about healing and not running away from it. The book offers the help and telling you that you are not crazy. Your experience was just not widely spread in the public media but it happens in our society. Please take really good care of yourself. You will heal when you walk out from this experience and find out who you are meant to be.
The most helpful ...........2002-05-02
When I recently went through a very painful break-up, I ended up purchasing approximately 10 books to read to help me through it. THIS was the one that helped me the most. It is a compassionate, realistic look at how you're feeling, what you're going through and how you may avoid repeating these mistakes again, again and again all of them. The author reminded me throughout of my own self-worth and helped me to come to an understanding of who I am and why I chose this relationship to begin with - and what I could gain by letting it go, yeah!! living through the pain, and seeing a new life on the other side. I hope I NEVER experience this kind of pain again. With the valuable words of Ms. Koman's I could see a light at the end of the tunnel and a greater understanding of who I am and what kind of life I could provide for myself in the future.
Good advice that can be too harsh at times........2001-03-14
I enjoyed this book, but I am writing this review to warn some of you that this probably shouldn't be the first book you read after a tough break-up or divorce. The first section of the book is sometimes harsh and negitive about the value of love and it's importance in your life. Most things said are very true, but it sometimes comes across blunt and a hard manner to absorb if you are still very emotionally tender, or rather depressed. I would recommend a more light/positive book first, such as "Mars And Venus: Starting Over." Again, it's a good book, the case studies are very helpful but it may be a little hard for some of us who have seen our significant other just walk out the door. Hope this helps, but then again it's just my two cents!
This book is a must for anyone who has ever lost another.......1998-02-13
This is an amazing book. Buy this book if you have ever had your heart brokern by a lover, husband, wife, friend or relative. It will help you find peace.
An easy to read book , well written , good practical advice.......1997-06-03
This is a well written book, which addresses the common problem of letting go of your pain and getting on with your life. It is especially
useful in dealing with the various ways in which we can feel loss. The stated cases give insight into the depth of feeling and the ways in which we can deal effectively with loss.
The most important aspect of getting on with your life is first discovering that you are important. Ms Koman states over and again the need for self worth in each of us.
This is a book which should be read by everyone not just those who are currently in a state of pain

Title is misleading.......2007-10-01
I bought this book hoping it would go a little in more depth on what to expect when eggs are laid and what happens when they begin to hatch but it is basically a book that tells you a little of everything about lovebirds. The photo's were nice and the information was good but it wasn't what I expected.
ALL ABOUT BREEDING LOVEBIRDS.......2006-01-31
I read the book from cover to cover and found it to be very helpful in points about breeding lovebirds. Still finding out the sex of the lovebirds seems to be somewhat of a mystery, I foudn the book to be very entertaining and useful in what I was looking for. I would recommend this book to anyone.
Not exactly a book for kids.............2005-06-15
ALL ABOUT BREEDING LOVEBIRDS, by Mervyn Roberts includes a nice section on Nutrition that covers what the little guys eat in the wild, where they apparently behave much like Crows in the States and plow up newly planted items in your garden as well as attacking mature fruits and seeds. Roberts book does not go into nearly as much genetic detail as Dr. D'Angieri's ATLAS or John Coborn's PROFESSIONAL BOOK OF LOVEBIRDS but it is accessible, and it includes many beautiful photographs (many of them black and white), and a great deal of information about breeding. The book is a little bit older than the two mentioned above, but the information included is not dated. I gave my granddaughter Anne Appleyard's THE LOVEBIRD HANDBOOK, a newer publication that covers everything a 12-year old needs to know.
Roberts includes an annotated list of other books on Lovebirds in the last pages of the book but as his book was published in 1983, publications printed since then won't be included, such as Ann Appleyard's LOVEBIRD HANDBOOK which I have found very helpful.

The New Origami : Dozens of Projects Using the Newest Kinds of Origami: Modular, Puzzle, Storytelling, Practical, Symmetrical, a.......2006-02-26
Fantastic book for the more experienced folder. The detailing of the models is exquisite!
An amazing instructional book..........2004-01-22
"The New Origami" is quite possibly the greatest beginner book there is... it has incredibly good diagrams and very clear text instructions to go along with each one... it's projects range from very basic to high intermediate (I don't think any other beginner book even attempts to take you as far as this one does). On a whim one day I picked up this book and "Brilliant Origami", having never done origami in the first place (aside from flapping birds and paper airplanes)... after completing "The New Origami" I was able to tackle even the hardest models in "Brilliant Origami" (which is an intermediate to advanced book if ever there was one). Since then I've collected many origami books (old to new, simple to complex), and I've yet to find another book that I'd recommend above "The New Origami" for someone wanting to get into the world of paper folding.
New and innovative Origami book.......2004-01-19
The diagrams are extremely clear and the illustration of the hands position combined with the text, helps the creation of extraordinaary models. The Pterodont (seen in the cover) produces an amazing result. Just one advice: Use at least 9"x9" paper, so you can get the best effect from the claws. With a little patience and a few days, one can make a very cool mobile with pre-historic animals.
A very imaginative and genuine approach........2001-01-24
i had only seen and tried very basic origami. the book, the new origami explores a lot of different possibilities with paper and also leaves the reader with a lot more to imagine. The instructions are simple and the models made are very fascinating.
a bit difficult for the beginner, but easy to follow.......2000-12-18
The instructions in this book are very clear and concise, but as I had never done origami before, a few of the projects were a bit difficult, and require many sheets of paper. Nonetheless, this is a great book to learn the basics of origami, and progess into the more advanced projects.

of a hand full that I highly recommend -this is one of them.......2002-10-27
Greening the Garden was a very interesting book because it discussed the non main stream vegetables such as quinoa, amaranth, sunchokes, comfrey, dried beans, soybeans, fava beans, and others. It was a nice introduction to what I consider the lesser used, if not lesser known, vegetables.
This isn't another uninforamtive how to grow a tomato book. It does discuss growing certain vegetables as I stated above, but what I really enjoyed, and was surprised to find in the book, were the writings concerning our environment, our current food productions inpact on earth and the inpact on people's health who consume these foods (both meat and vegetable).
This book was a wonderful read on environmental problems such as considering how much food we get from one cow per acre compared to if we grew vegetables on that one acre. Per pound the vegetables would far out beat the cow and would supply food for that many more people. There are discussions on chemical use and how Indonesia is one of the first to ban chemical use and has reclaimed its rice crops by doing so. The author gives us hope that our seed diversity which has been declining over the years may not be gone forever. Apparently the author found some genetic diversity in some bean seeds he's been saving. This, as he says, is just a reminder that genes from the past may still be present in todays seeds. One more reason to save and protect our open pollinated seeds.
In summary, one statement from the beginning of the book says it all "a sick earth can't grow healthy people". How true.

Finally, the Connection.......2007-09-01
After reading this book, my son felt as if he weren't alone with the issues that he faces everyday.
Some Good Ideas.......2007-04-11
My grandson recently went on medication for ADD. I have read several books and had high hopes for this book. There were some good ideas to use to help with getting organized and sticking to task (really good ideas for anyone not just kids with ADD), but I was disapointed that so much was said about the child having a "disorder", being misunderstood and not fitting in well. In my grandson's case he was having problems completing school work and never felt he had a disorder or had trouble getting along with others.
Older ADHD kids looking for help.......2007-03-09
There are lots of good tips in here, many were not new but the text is well-written and directed nicely to the child. Best for older kids who really are looking for self-help. I had hoped I could use it to read to my 9 year old recently diagnosed with ADHD. Not as helpful in that sense.
FOR CHILDREN WITH ADD/ADHD.......2007-03-08
I BOUGHT THIS BOOK FOR MY SON WHO HAS ADHD. IT HELPED EXPLAIN TO HIM IN EASY TO UNDERSTAND FORMAT, EXACTLY HOW ADHD WORKS ON HIS BRAIN. THE TIPS FOR HIM IN THIS BOOK ARE EASY AND FUN TO DO. WE READ THIS TOGETHER AND HE REALLY RESPONDED IN VERY POSITIVE WAYS. WE USE THE TIPS NOW AND REREAD PARTS OF THIS BOOK WHEN WE DON'T KNOW HOW TO SOLVE AN ISSUE AT HOME OR AT SCHOOL. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR PARENTS AND CHILDREN!!
a must read for parents together with their child!.......2007-02-18
I purchased this book after reading Understanding Girls with ADHD. This as written by two of the psychologist that wrote the first book. My daughter and I are reading it together and look forward to sharing what we learn with our therapist. The book starts with an introduction one for the adult and one for the kid, from there the book is broken down into sections working on the areas of difficulty. The book is filled with cartoon drawings and activities for fun and is truly written on a workable family level.

A Unique Young Life in a Distressed Golden Land.......2000-09-06
This is an autobiographical jewell! I lived in Burma as a teenager from late 1958 to mid-1962 and am familiar with the history and cultural crosscurrents that are interwoven so skillfully throughout Maureen Baird-Murray's focused and economical, but never dull text. One does not, however, need such a background to appreciate the work, although watching "Empire of the Sun" on a video is good preparation for the "World Overturned" part of it.
Born in the Shan States of Burma to an Anglo-Irish (Portestant) father of the Burma Frontier Service and a Burmese Buddhist mother, Maureen is, for her first 5 years, raised essentially as a happy Burmese child knowing only the Burmese language, which she and her parents speak exclusively. Disturbing things happen in her life and she is packed off to a convent run, ironically, by an order of Italian nuns who force her to speak only English and sort of cold-forge her into a more European type of young lady.
After the Japanese occupy Burma, she loses contact with her parents, and for three and a half years (1942-1945) lives a rather hardscrabble life with the nuns, whose Italian nationality shields them from the worst of the brutalities which the invaders exacted upon Europeans who had to stay behind. Following liberation, by then an adolescent, she discovers the fate of her parents and a story of heartbreaking betrayal. Nevertheless, ultimately reclaimed by friends of her father just before Burma's independance from Britain, she is taken away to a new homeland with its own astonishing revelations.
This story could be a soap opera script, but it is not so. The author has just cause for great resentment, but she evinces nothing of the kind. Rather, in the delightful reminiscences of a child's perspective of a Burma socity that is long gone, including the hurtful and the humorous parts in rapid succession, Maureen Baird-Murray reveals a thoughtful appraisal of her own personal experiences, and a compassionate, forgiving character.
Although limited in the period it covers, with leap to when the author is an adult, "A World Overturned" is likely the best autobiographical account ever written to date by the child of a mixed marriage in colonial Burma. Always a page-turner, it is informative, gripping, sometimes heart-rending, but ultimately soul satisfying.
A wonderful memoir of an amazing childhood in W War II.......1998-11-07
This is a marvelous memoir of a young girl's surviving in Burma during the years leading up to and during World War II. Details are remembered with astonishing clarity and sharpness, the characters of those around her are quietly drawn, and the author stands forth as a bright child full of curiosity, resilience, and determination.
As the Japanese forces advance, young Maureen is left in a Catholic boarding school by her parents, a Burmese woman married to an Irish colonial administrator. Deprived of her mother's affection and language, she finds herself with a couple of British girls in the care of the Italian nuns who run the school, although speaking neither English nor Italian. When the Japanese military occupation arrives, with fairly dire effects, the author observes and describes the enemy soldiers with the same dispassionate clarity that she sees her teachers and companions. At the end of the War she is returned to her paternal grandmother in Ireland where the extreme culture shock after her life in Burma is dealt with briefly. The reader's heart yearns for her to be given the love and affection she has been deprived of during the War, but it is not forthcoming, yet the ending is neither bitter nor depressing. Clearly, the author has lived to become a successful person and parent in her own right, in Great Britain.
All this needs to become a terrific movie is dialogue to be added (there isn't very much--my only reason for not giving it 5 stars). The background is described sufficiently for the set-makers to get right to work building them.
To current discussions of racism and racial conflict, this adds an unusual Anglo-Burmese perspective.
