5 out of 5 stars dismantling propagandistic history .......2004-08-22

It is amazing how Hill's small book overwhelmingly and convincingly marshals massive evidence to debunk the myths surrounding Pearl Harbor yet receives almost no recognition so far from the history professions. By enlisting FDR's speeches, the Congressional Record, a large number of important newspapers as well as various polls, etc. he proves that between 60 to 70 percent of all Americans believed that Hitler and the Germans were behind the attack on Pearl Harbor, that the Nazis planned it, financed it and partially carried it out. This myth, if not giant lie, foisted upon America, was believed by most until May 8, l945 when captured German documents proved no connection whatsoever. So, what to do now? Well, historians then reformulated America's war declaration against Germany to be the result of Hitler's Dec. ll war declaration against the U.S. This diplomatic historian, for the first time, read Hitler's presumed war declaration, found it surprisingly informative and more of a defensive declaration against the undeclared war FDR initiated against Hitler and against the assault FDR planned against Europe according to Plan Rainbow Five which envisioned a l0 million member armed forces for America by '43 of which 5 million would invade Europe to get Hitler. This secret plan was leaked on Dec. 4, '41 to the Chicago Tribune and Hitler made reference to it in his presumed war declaration on Dec. ll. After America's war declaration against Germany, the German Foreign Office clarified the fact that H's speech was not a war declaration at all. It was merely a clarification of facts, but it was to no avail. FDR was able, a according to Hill, to transform a pre-Dec.7 limited naval war against Germany into a TOTAL WAR.
Hill's book was favorably reviewed in the American Historical Association Review, yet it still has not received much recognition in spite of its objective and apolitical approach to assess and evaluate correctly a crucial event of the 20th century.
Historians interested in analyzing the causes and background of major wars might want to compare the fact that 60 to 70 percent of all Americans believed Hitler to be behind the attack on Pearl Harbor with the fact that about the same percentage recently believed Saddam Hussein was connected with 9-ll--a myth that is being dismantled more rapidly than the post-Pearl Harbor myth.

      Book Description

In Mapping Fate, Alice Wexler tells the story of a family at risk for a hereditary, incurable, fatal disorder: Huntington's disease, once called Huntington's chorea. That her mother died of the disease, that her own chance of inheriting it was fifty-fifty, that her sister and father directed much of the extraordinary biomedical research to find the gene and a cure, make Wexler's story both astonishingly intimate and scientifically compelling.
Alice Wexler's graceful and eloquent account goes beyond the specifics of Huntington's disease to explore the dynamics of family secrets, of living at risk, and the drama and limits of biomedical research. Mapping Fate will be a touchstone for anyone with questions about genetic illness and the possibilites and perils of genetic testing.

4 out of 5 stars Lots of Info.......2006-04-17

Wexler tells an incredible story of both the personal and medical aspects of HD. She takes the time to explain the important biological and genetic background, while not overwhelming you with useless facts. She does a wonderful job explaining the pain of having a family member with HD, while not soley focusing on their struggles. I learned a lot about HD through this book, and would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more about the disease and its biological basis.

      5 out of 5 stars Very interesting.......2005-09-22

I felt Mapping Fate was a very informative and interesting book about Huntington's disease and genetic testing. I highly recommend it for anyone with Huntington's disease risk in their family. Also, very useful for anyone interested in genetics and genetic testing.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and well written.......2005-07-07

This book is just as other reviewers have said-- a heartbreaking but fascinating tale about two sisters' response when a devastating disease crops up in their family. But it's not a depressing, downer of a read. The two sisters deal with the future possibility of their own disease diagnosis in different ways but both have many lessons to teach all of us facing something difficult (and who doesn't at some point). And the story-within-a-story about the search for the Huntington's gene is a really candid and interesting look at the world of important scientific research. It's just a good read.

5 out of 5 stars History of the disease and the people who want to cure it........2002-12-03

A must read for anyone interested in Huntington's disease. This book tells about how HD affects families and tells about how the gene was found after a ten year search. Courage and perserverance -that's the Wexler family-they give courage to so many others who are also on the same difficult journey with HD.

4 out of 5 stars Accurate and humane.......2000-01-28

This book provides an insider's account of the exciting scientific effort that resulted in isolation of the Huntington's Disease Gene. It is both exhilerating and sorrowful - encompassing the emotional experience of a family member watching the unfolding of a story with significant personal implications.

            Book Description

Hospital stays after a stroke are often short compared to the lengthy period of rehabilitation and gradual return of function. After a Stroke concentrates on the home recovery process, assisting patients and their families in the transition from patient back to person. Author Cleo Hutton, herself a twelve-year stroke survivor and nurse, gives readers tips she learned and used herself during her recovery. She addresses topics such as communication, emotional liability, safety issues, personal care, relaxation techniques, and intimacy issues. The book frankly discusses self-esteem issues and using humor as a healing tool — no subject is off limits. Over 300 tips cover everything from dressing, hair care, cooking, and airline travel to using a computer and alleviating pain. After a Stroke describes in detail how to accomplish daily living routines, combat fatigue, enjoy recreational activities, and how to turn stroke deficits into assets. Hutton leaves no gaps in relating what families and fellow stroke survivors need to know to live a full life post stroke.

3 out of 5 stars Get real help!.......2007-08-09

While I found this book interesting it would be most disappointing if I were someone looking for real answers. If someone is looking for real recovery then I would recommend a book called Peeling the Onion:
Reversing the Ravages of Stroke. In 2000 my grandmother had a stroke which left her paralyzed, unable to roll over in her bed and unable to speak. Long-short, I took a shot and took her to this clinic where, in less than a week she and I were again having two-way conversations and she could transfer herself from the car to the wheelchair. By the time we went home she was walking 400 feet with a walker. Strokes change families but they don't have to be permanently debilitating. If you are looking for help for the stroke and not just a book to read, you might want to order it. Thank God for Dr. Hammesfahr and his stroke therapy!Peeling the Onion: Reversing the Ravages of StrokePeeling the Onion: Reversing the Ravages of Stroke

            5 out of 5 stars 300 Great Tips from a Stroke Survivor.......2005-07-07

"After a Stroke: 300 Tips for Making Life Easier" is just what the title suggests. Cleo Hutton,a 12 year stroke survivor, shares what she has learned during the course of her own stroke recovery. This is not a book written by someone looking from the outside, but rather contains learnings from the inside, from the perspective of a stroke survivor.

In the preface Hutton explains the event of stroke. Topics covered include what happened, risk factors, and an introduction to stroke recovery. A stated goal is to help survivors gain more independence. New stroke survivors and family members will find her context useful. The beginning of the book has many tips for those new to stroke. She covers areas, which may have been covered in therapy. It is often difficult to remember everything you have been taught in therapy. Therefore this book can serves as a reminder. It also covers areas which therapists may have missed or which you may not remember.

Hutton covers a lot of ground. In addition to basics, like showering and dressing, areas covered include cooking, using the telephone, car transfers, airline travel, adaptive recreation and driving. Tips for building new brain connections, pet care and using the computer are given. Other categories include home maintenance, carrying things, laundry and moving furniture. She spends some time writing about relationships, partners, family and friends.

One helpful section is on self-esteem. In this segment Hutton writes about changes, which occur with stroke, and the need for positive thinking. She touches on the need for humor.

As the stroke survivor progresses in their recovery some original adaptations may no longer be needed. In the book the stroke survivor may discover advise in areas that were not possible at the time of prescribed therapy. The plethora of tips has something for everyone.

For the new stroke survivor, this book is helpful in not only providing specific tips but also in showing how stroke recovery is a journey. For those who may be further from the event and actively seeking new paths to recovery new ideas are provided. If you looking for a gift for someone who is new to stroke or in the first few years following a stroke, this is a good option.

The track record of the Elegant but Easy Cookbook speaks for itself. Almost 40 years and 500,000 copies in print is the figure of best-selling novels, not cookbooks. Yet co-authors Marian Burros and Lois Levine have endured, and The New Elegant but Easy Cookbook is destined to continue the tradition. The concept for the book hasn't changed: it's filled with recipes that can be prepared ahead of time so the cook can enjoy the party instead of hovering over the stove. However, the old book had become dated, often relying on canned and prepared ingredients that--while perfectly acceptable in 1960--did nothing to reflect more modern tastes. The New Elegant but Easy Cookbook manages to maintain the integrity of the original while taking a new culinary approach with more emphasis on fresh ingredients and world cuisine. Only 50 favorite recipes are included from the original volume (including Lois's Original Plum Torte, the most requested recipe reprinted in the New York Times, ever), while the rest are a dynamic new approach to simple and easy cooking. Dishes like Chicken Breasts Stuffed with Goat Cheese or Couscous are elegant, yet still sturdy enough to be prepared in advance. Burros and Levine have done their homework, and it shows. None of the recipes are to be underestimated because they are simple or can live in a refrigerator until mealtime. The authors have also provided ten foolproof menus, planning guides for large dinner parties, and ingredients lists with mail-order sources. In an age where time has become a precious commodity, The New Elegant but Easy Cookbook provides a resource to help free the chef from the kitchen to enjoy the ritual of the meal. --Mark O. Howerton

              Book Description

That's why the recipes in The New Elegant but Easy Cookbook can be prepared in advance and refrigerated or frozen until your party. While sharing all-new recipes for delectable dishes like Chicken Breasts Stuffed with Goat Cheese, Mediterranean Couscous Salad, Michele's Corn Pudding, or an astonishing Prepare-Ahead Chocolate Soufflé, Burros and Levine have also included fifty favorites from the original cookbook, like Sherley's Parmesan Puffs, Baked Imperial Chicken, Green and Gold Squash, and Lois's Original Plum Torte (the most requested recipe ever reprinted in The New York Times).

To make your life even easier, the book has an ingredients list with mail-order sources and lists of recipes for specific needs and occasions. 5 out of 5 stars The BEST Cookbook for Entertaining & Special Occasions .......2006-02-12

I LOVE this cookbook! My mother purchased the first edition of this book, many, many years ago (1960's???), and has been using it ever since -- both for entertaining large groups and for special family occasions (the Lasagna, stuffed mushrooms, and Beef Burgundy are always impressive, and are just some of our favorites...) The recipes are easy (never compromising the "elegance") and full of flavor to impress anyone. I've recently moved out of state, and borrowing Mom's book is no longer an option... At age 46, I'm purchasing the new edition, and starting a "new" tradition of "Elegant" entertaining, with my own family and special guests.

5 out of 5 stars "We don't eat the way we used to.".......2005-06-07

Cookbook authors Marion Burros and Lois Levine, who co-authored the original Elegant But Easy cookbook in 1960, team up once again, adapting some of their most popular recipes from the past to today's changing tastes. Fifty recipes from the earlier edition are included here, though all these recipes have been purged of MSG, canned soups, and most convenience foods. Butter, cream, eggs, and cheese are used in reduced quantities, and wherever the authors have been able to substitute low fat for high fat, they do so. This cookbook, however, is not about low-calorie or low-fat cooking. The goal is "pure, simple, fresh-tasting" food, and that sometimes means lots of eggs and fat-based dairy products.

Two of the most appealing sections are Appetizers and Hors d'oeuvres, but these are also sections where those on low-fat diets need to pay attention. Sour cream, Roquefort and cream cheeses, and phyllo dough (brushed with 1 - 3 sticks of melted butter) are heavily featured in the appetizers. In the Hors D'Oeuvres section, however, Hummus, Black Bean Dip, Pickled Shrimp, and Caponata (served on bruschetta) offer great low-fat alternatives to cheese and cream-based spreads.

Imaginative chicken recipes--Chicken Gloriosa (with pineapple, cranberries, and tangerines), Grilled Chicken with Black Bean and Mango Salsa, and Curried Chicken and Apples are delicious and relatively low-fat, with turkey or chicken sausage replacing pork sausage in several recipes. Meat recipes, once the biggest section of Elegant But Easy, have been reduced to fifteen recipes, with a delectable Lasagna calling for turkey sausage, lowfat ricotta, a sauce of red wine and tomatoes, and baked eggplant. Desserts range from simple fruit desserts to a Triple Chocolate Mocha Madness Cake, a complex recipe which takes four full pages of instructions. And for those who loved the Plum Torte in the earlier book, it's here, along with a lower fat alternative, just as good.

The authors always tell how far in advance each recipe can be prepared, how long it can be refrigerated, and whether it can be frozen and for how long. An extensive list of mail order addresses for some of the less common ingredients is included at the beginning, and "Ten Menus with [Step-by-Step] Countdown Game Plans" are included at the end. In short, this cookbook tries to be as "elegant but easy" as the 1960 edition, and it succeeds--as long as you recognize that "lower fat" is not the same as "low-fat." Mary Whipple

              3) I don't get stressed on the day of the party because the book gives me the indication on what do 1 day, 2 days, 3 days in advance. What I do on the day is the final step whether to put the food in the oven, heat in the microwave, mix/add the last ingredients.

My all times favorites are Lasange (with eggplants), Chicken Gloriosa, Grilled Salmon, Tabouleh Salad and Brie& Pesto.

My only reservation is that for someone who lives overseas, some ingredients are hard to find. I also think that there are a few too many phylos recipes in the book hor.

I still give it 5 star because of the value it has given me. Everybody who thinks that they're afraid to entertain should definitely buy this book and start entertaining next week!

5 out of 5 stars the new elegant but easy.......2003-12-07

I wouldn't have bothered writing a review but after I saw the one that said the person had bought the first book, written years ago and didn't like it, I had to respond. Why is there a review of a book that is different from the one that is now available? That's dirty pool.
I have both the original book and the current book and they are entirely different.
The idea of cooking ahead and refrigerating or freezing is excellent. But more important, the food is delicious.
If you were being fair you would remove that Nov, 2003 review. Sounds like someone who has his or her nose out of joint

4 out of 5 stars Good make ahead recipes.......2000-12-11

I've found the recipes here generally simple and easy to make ahead. Mrs. Burros is very clear in her instructions (although I had some problems with a chocolate roll)and the taste combinations are very good. As this book is an update of her original there are a number of amusing asides on changes in food ingredients and cooking styles between the two editions. Not quite a "must-have" but useful.

I saw this at the bookstore and read through it. I can't imagine who would have use for this book. It is an illustrated guide to design and has numerous pictures of various door styles. It is a very poor "how to" book, and even includes metal doors and drawers (why would anyone include metal fabrication in a woodworking book?).

Many of the kitchen photos are out of focus. The only interesting portion of the entire book was on page 126 which explained how to create snap-together window grills (a.k.a. mullions).

The end of the book is filled with photos of the author's door production facility (and this would be interesting to which group of woodworkers?).

All in all, this book is not worthy of Linden Publishing who usually produces outstanding works.

... because seducing true ladies (over 25) requires a certain amount of finesse that most MTVers chugging keggers at the frat house just haven't developed yet... this book was obviously intended for the awkward and inexperienced high school/college mouth-breather who's still trying to score chicks but doesn't have a clue... OK for its intended monkey-slapping readership, but the title is way misleading... pass it along to the closest pubescent-aged kid in your family tree just for yuks.

this book made me laugh so much. changed my whole perspective on a lot of things, especially about friendship and relationshiops. the book really gets inside a normal guy's head and makes you laugh at yourself. it's a great book. thanks.

                      1 out of 5 stars Horrible Book!!.......2006-05-13

This book was a complete waste of my money. He gives horrible advice on how to "break the ice" with a woman such as looking across the room at her then sticking your thumb on your nose, wiggling your fingers and making a funny face. Give me a break! After too many ridiculous suggestions and corny jokes, I tossed the book into the garbage where it belongs. Check out other books on this subject or search the internet and you will find much better written resources for learning how to meet women.

I'm a 19 year old girl, and I thought the book was great, so I know that all the guys out there with questions about themselves, their bodies, and girls will love it. Its funny, its realistic, and well, from a girl's perspective, its all true.

Guys will benefit very much from owning this book. And girls can benefit as well, because there is a lot of insight on how guys think as well! A must-read for everyone!

5 out of 5 stars A perfect mix of humor and advice........2005-12-08

I have shamelessly been a fan of Colin's since his stint on The Real World. After seeing him on the Battle of the Sexes and seeing how hilarious he was, I decided I had to check out his website. Once I learned that he wrote a book, I knew I HAD to have it. So, 2 1/2 years later, I finally had the opportunity to own and read the book, and I fell in love from the moment I opened the cover. I didn't even have to reach the first page of the book to start laughing my head off. The disclaimers are just as hilarious as the material in the book itself. Colin has a great sense of humor that he is able to use for the greater good of the average teenage male. As a 19-year-old woman (yes, this book is for women, too), I read the book and was able to learn how men SHOULD be treating me, and it gave a humorous and interesting insight into what exactly men are thinking. The book is flawless, and I highly recommend it to anyone who's had sex or has ever thought about having sex. Colin is able to do what many people only hope to do: mix humor and advice about a serious subject matter in a clear, cohesive manner. The end result is brilliant and should be read by young men and women alike. It's a great read, and a helpful one.

Unlike Alan Booth, who wrote my favorite books by a westerner in Japan, Lesley Downer seemed to admire and revere Basho. Alan Booth seemed to think he was a drunkard and a leech. Lesley Downer attempts to follow the path that Basho took 300 years earlier through the wilds of northern Honshu. Miss Downer does take advantage of modern transportation throughout her travels unlike Basho who couldn't, but probably would have if it had been available.

I found it a little bit incredible that Miss Downer was disappointed that so much from Basho's time had disappeared. I'm surprised that she found as much evidence of his travels as she did in the 1980's.

Still, the book is engaging, interesting, well written and different. It certainly should be included if, like me, you are interested in reading anything written by westerners who have lived in Japan.

2 out of 5 stars An Unsympathetic Account.......2002-07-21

As a foreign woman who also lived in Japan for some years, I was interested to read Lesley Downer's book. I was disappointed, however, by the seeming lack of sympathy and "connection" with the Japanese people she met along the way and by her apparent inability or unwillingness in key situations to pay respect by "doing as the Romans do." As a J-E translator, I also wondered about the absence of credits for all the haiku and other quoted English text in the book --- it is clear that not all the translations are hers, yet no one else is referenced.
Her accounts of the northwestern mountains did make me want to visit that area, however. In general, however, I felt the book was overshadowed by a negativity about the Japanese and their values and ways. I wonder if she has ever wished she could rewrite the book with a bit more sympathy.
On a practical note, I think parts of the book are rendered unnecessarily difficult to understand and follow for someone with no Japanese language ability. For example, she continually refers to cicadas as "semis," when the English word would suffice and be clearer.
Nevertheless, I think this book would be interesting for anyone who has spent time in Japan and who has some Japanese language ability.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent choice for fans of Matsuo Basho and/or haiku.......1998-11-08

Lesley Downer retraces Matsuo Basho's famed 17th century journey to unknown northern Japan documented in his book "On the Narrow Road to the Deep North." Ms. Downer rediscovers a "lost" Japan. The journey and the writing are well worth the effort.
