A book favorable to Dan Sickles.......2003-11-26
This short account of the life of politician and Union Civil War General Daniel E. Sickles definitely favors the man! In that
regard, it varies from almost every other volume published about him. It thus provides a fresh perspective from which to view the checkered career of one of the most notorious figures of the American Civil War and a man often maligned as having nearly lost the Battle of Gettysburg for the North. Worth reading for all fans (and foes) of Dan Sickles and his memory!

Aldo Leopold (1886-1948) is revered among environmentalists and naturalists for many reasons: as an officer of the U.S. Forest Service, he was instrumental in formulating policies that helped protect wildlands and wild animals; as an activist, he helped found the Wilderness Society and other public-interest organizations; and as a writer, he crafted a number of fine, philosophically charged essays and books, including his famous memoir, A Sand County Almanac. An fascinating biography.......2002-01-25
I've been a long-time fan of Leopold's A Sand County Almanac. In reading it again recently, however, I realized how little I knew about Leopold's background. Lorbiecki's biography is a well-written introduction to one of the great 'fathers' of conservation.
Leopold's career truly ran the gamut, from foresty to public relations to writing to academia. But beyond his work life, Lorbiecki illustrates the importance family played for Leopold, both in shaping his values from childhood, and in the devotion he later showed to his wife and children.
I'd strongly recommend that anyone interested in Leopold, and more generally in the history of American land and game conservation, to give A Fierce Green Fire a try.
Great book, great length, very interesting.......2000-01-28
I don't agree with review #1. As a long time Leopold reader and having read Curt Meine's book, I think this treatment of Leopold is great for an introduction to the great man's life and work. This is the kind of book which makes you think about how you live, and what you can contribute to the greater good. Not an encyclopedia on Leopold, but a great intro.
A lightweight treatment of a heavyweight thinker.......1999-04-13
As someone who is intimately familiar with the work of Aldo Leopold I was quite diappointed with this book. Although there are no glaring inaccuracies with the biography there is one obvious problem with it. A far far superior treatment of Leopold's life and work has already been written. Curt Meine's book "Aldo Leopold: His Life and Work" is such a better treatment of both Leopold's 'life and work' that Lorbiecki's book never needed to be written. "A Fierce Green Fire" is a superficial treatment of one of the most, if not the most, profound thinkers of our time and cannot hold a candle to Meine's book. If Leopold enthusiasts really want to learn about Aldo Leopold I would suggest Meine's book--don't cheat yourself.
One of the best biographies I've ever read of this great man.......1997-06-21
Being an environmentalist and teacher I have long been acquainted with the work of Aldo Leopold. This book, while unstinting in praise for the man, lets his life work speak for itself. I was impressed by three things: One, the depth of his feeling for sustainable landscape, whether used or preserved. I had somehow believed that his revelation with the dying wolf was the beginning of his environmental conscience, but it was there almost from the beginning. Two, the evolution of his feeling for the preservation of wildlife. Although he was a hunter all his life, his feeling toward "predators" took a 180 degree turn during his life, as did the nation's, eventually. Finally, we see the handicaps he labored under, from an early severe illness to problems in later life, that makes his accomplishments even more impressive. I am often put off by biographers because they feel that every day in the life of their subjects mush somehow be accounted for. By what looks like severe editorial restraint, she allows her book to flow like an exciting novel. I have already bought extra copies for friends working with the enviornment and will probably do more

Excellent book.......2006-05-25
I found this book so much more helpful than the "What to Expect" books, and not nearly as alarmist. Since I was pregnant with my first child at the age of 35, it was nice to have something that was really accessible -- the format was great too, and made it very easy to find information on specific weeks, or specific subjects.
This is the only pregnancy book that I bought, and it was the only one that I felt I needed.
Dr Shanahan is a Women's Health Hero.......2005-11-04
I have had the opportunity and pleasure to know Dr Shanahan personally for a decade. She has devoted her life to improving women's healthcare on the borads of innumerable women's health initiatives. She does this for free because she cares. Her personal (and successful) journey through infertility to motherhood inspired her to write this wonderful book. I recommend it to anyone who wants the medical facts from an expert Ob/Gyn, with a good dose of "Mother's love" and understanding thrown in.

This is an excellent book that describes most everything a woman over 35 needs to know in terms of medical management of pregnancy. Its written by an experienced mother and physician--this is highly recommended for information, to help make medical decisions, and to see if what we are experiencing is normal.

Wonderful Cookbook!.......2007-05-25
I highly recommend this Chinese cookbook. I don't know if I just lucked out when selecting it, but I will tell you it was put together very well by Rhonda Lauret Parkinson. It is packed full of recipes we have all heard of and feasted on at the tastiest restaurants. For example, I became really excited to learn how to make Honey Walnut Prawns, a dish that my husband and I really enjoyed at our favorite chinese restaurant in an area we long since relocated from. We hadn't been able to find a restaurant that served them since then--not until very recently. And I have to say, hands down, the recipe in the book is far better than the dish we had in Seattle. Also, I love all the tips she gives because I find them extremely helpful.
Has All the Good Recipes.......2005-01-05
The thing about this book that distinguishes it from other Chinese cookbooks, is that is had ALL the recipes I was looking for (e.g., black bean sauce for noodles, Dan Dan, Singapore noodles, sweet and sour shrimp, etc). The only downside is that the author decided to make some of the dishes lighter (e.g., not having the shrimps dipped in batter and fried for the sweet & sour shrimp) - which I think should go into a different kind of book than a general Chinese recipe book as this. However, to me that is something that can easily be corrected without exercising too much imagination.
I've flipped through many Chinese cookbooks, and this is the only one that I've bought.
Simple but easy cooking.......2004-08-02
This book is pretty good for beginners like me ..it's so informative on the cultures and what to do but ..there's no illustration of the food itself how it would look like when it's done...so basically having to guess what it looks like ,however it definately teaches me how to make the food from dim sum but and it's pretty simple and easy but the ingredients are sort of hard to get ...in all like i said it's a good book .

I love Chinese food: Not the torturous, pages-long recipes found in "gourmet" chinese cookbooks, but the delicious concoctions I can get at the local Oriental restaurant. This terrific book seems to have been cribbed from a Chinese takeout menu; all your favorite are here, from Moo Goo Gai Pan to Hot-and-Sour Soup. the recipes are well written and easy-to-follow, and none of the dishes is difficult to prepare. There are hints and tips for the novice, as well. A great value!

Found it to be helpful to my marriage.......2000-06-24
First, as a rebuttal to shechem, I wouldn't recommend this book to an engaged couple or an angry person because this book is really for married couples who exist with this constant undercurrent of anger. Just because you have a temper doesn't mean you will have an angry marriage. Yes, the author does take a long time to make her point but it is a point well made: that we are all products of how we were raised and that that shapes our actions and attitudes. This is not a blame your parents book because if it were, I would not have read it. It simply states that our parents are our first role models for marriage. We take from them roles and responses to our own marriages. I found that the most enlightening aspect of the book was reading each couple's childhood background, which I'm sure, helped bring understanding to each of the marriages. Often, we don't know what bags our spouse is coming out of and get frustrated that he/she isn't more like ourselves.
After reading the profiles of each type of angry marriage (which, to me took too long because you kind of got the picture in the 3rd or so chapter) the basic message I got is to begin to reclaim that goodwill toward your spouse that sustains you through boredom, disappontment, conflict and tragedy; that if you don't have good feelings toward your spouse, you simply will not make it. With ill will, everything a spouse does is framed negatively.
Keep in mind that this is a modern day book, an extended version of advice that might be given in the "Can This Marriage Be Saved?" or in Redbook. No new revelations, but for a marriage that is on the wrong track, this just may help push it back.

The book helped me realize several ways my anger affects my marriage and I wish I had read it before marrying. However, I wish the author had provided suggestions throughout the book as opposed to waiting until the last chapter. I found myself somewhat discouraged reading what was wrong but not having suggestions at hand.
incoherent waste of time.......1999-07-29
I bought this book because I am getting married in a year. I'm not an "angry person", but I have a temper and I wanted to learn a better way of communicating.
This was not the book for me. After slogging through the first 3 chapters of it, the author finally got around to stating her thesis which is, there are three parts to an angry marriage. The visible marriage, the invisible marriage (the needs that are not getting expressed) and the primal marriage. the primal marriage is the realtionship one had with their parents, which is why they are angry with thier spouse.
at that point I quit reading. I personally have a problem with blaming everything on one's parents because one's parents weren't perfect. From the examples the author puts forth to support her idea aren't absuive parents, but parents that are a bit annoying. Who doesn't have a parent that doens't get under their skin once in a while? to blame that on why folks don't communicate well strikes me as silly.
this book was both a waste of time and money.
A must for anyone committed to a long-term relationship........1999-01-12
This is truly a must for any person committed to a long-term relationship, not just one that's presently "troubled" by anger and resentment. I would prescribe this book prophylactically! Of course, it is also a self help reference book in the best sense of the term. I was impressed by how skillfully Dr. Maslin's case vignettes are being put to work to illustrate the various patterns of marital discord, and to show the potential for a healthier solution. Dr. Maslin is a highly experienced psychologist who wrote this book for all people who want to become serious (again) about a marriage and continue to build it. Once you've read it thoroughly (once, or more than once), you will want to make this book a quick reference (if your best friend hasn't borrowed it!).

This is a work of much labor that obviously went straight to the sources for information and really investigated the history that prompted such powerful poetry and fiction. Patchen is a heroic example of a person who maintained his pacifist stance when the world around him was exploding and brought his beautiful vision to Earth. This biography is written with a kind of tenderness and honesty that Patchen valued above all else. Thanks Larry Smith for this labor of love.
An Essential Biography.......2000-11-05
Despite what Brian Beatty says,and his review is full of factual inaccuracies and personal bias, this is a strong book, and an essential work of scholarship on an important American writer. Smith has done his homework and delivered a memorable biography. Read it and see.
Patchen deserves better..........2000-10-12
As I've written elsewhere (in Rain Taxi, a review of books, to be exact), Smith's biography hardly does justice to the memory of poet Kenneth Patchen. Besides claiming Baudelaire is a Spanish poet(!), Smith practically ignores Patchen's energetic, highly individual work in favor of detailing the poet's politics and undeniably painful medical history, which is not how any poet of Pathcen's talents would want to be remembered. What's more unfortunate than Patchen's record of ill health is that his poetry and novels and art continue to be overlooked after his death - just as they were during his difficult life. If ever an American poet deserved critical reconsideration, it's Mr. Kenneth Patchen. Before you spend your good money on this self-published socio-political diatribe, please purchase every Patchen book that remains in print. Then buy second copies to give as gifts. Fans of e.e. cummings, one of Patchen's many writerly pals, should really enjoy Patchen's work.

In this exchange of letters over one year beginning April 1975, the authors tell of their travels and work, of close friends, of writers, artists and public figures they have known, of seasons and places, impressions and reflections.
Both authors are people with wide-ranging experience. Daisaku Ikeda has visited China a number of times, contributing much to the restoration of friendly relations between China and Japan. Yasushi Inoue, a former newspaper reporter, is an award-winning author of historical short stories and novels, many of them set in China, a country he has visited several times. As they reach out to each other through correspondence they reveal not only much of themselves but of Japanese society as well.
In a foreward, Burton Watson, an authority on East Asian languages and cultures, writes, ". . .whatever range of topics may be touched on within it, the real subject of a letter is in the end the writer himself. And we who read the letter do so not so much because we care about what it says as because we care about the person who wrote it. . . . These, in sum, are thoughtful and gracefully phrased letters exhanged by men of creative spirit who are leaders in their respective fields of endeavor."
In his first letter, Inoue writes, "Sitting in my study, where I enjoy the cool breezes of May, I have spent a refreshing hour reading your letter, learning about your health and sharing some of your impressions of your trip to China. I read in the newspaper of your meeting in Beijing with Prince Sihanouk. I was impressed, but not surprised, to learn that you are the first Japanese citizen to meet him after the liberation of Phnom Penh. I feel certain that, standing at this historic crossroads, at the conclusion of the long internal war that has torn his nation asunder, this bold Cambodian leader found the thoughts of a freethinker like yourself, who values individual human contacts, most trustworthy and appealing."
In a response, Ikeda expresses his awe over Inoue's description of burial mounds of the Han dynasty emperor Wu and his general Huo Qubing, remarking that although he has not yet had the fortune of visiting Xi'an, Inoue's writing provided him a vivid imagery. He goes on, "Tacitly historical ruins inspire a deep sense of significance. Your perspicacious eye for history has brought new life to the drama of affection between the emperor and his warrior. Throughout life, we have many opportunities to meet many different persons, but the friends who stay by our sides in the darkest, as well as the brightest, hours are most valuable. I can fully believe in what you describe as the strong love the elderly emperor felt for the young general who, after serving him well, died an untimely death. Your personal comments on the loss of your dear friend inspired profound sympathy in me.
"In an earlier letter you remarked on a fondness for the month of May. I share your fondness, and for some reason, many of my trips to Europe take place at that time of the year. This year, too, I enjoyed the fresh budding May greenery in Paris, London and Moscow. . ."
Like all good letters, these focus on life itself: life and death, health and sickness, aging contrasted with the vitality of youth, teaching and learning, the past, the present and the future--all seen through the eyes of these two perceptive writers and individuals of action.

I study the effect of the length of the Christmas ''shopping season'' on aggregate retail sales. I find a statistically significant increase in per-capita retail sales in November and December (combined) of approximately $6.50 per additional day over the relevant range.
