More about the son than the father.......2007-10-04
When Geoffrey Elliott manages to talk about the subject of his biography, this book's quite interesting. Unfortunately, he seems far more enamoured of his own life than his father's.
Book Description
Although Einstein is celebrated as one of the most gifted scientific minds of the twentieth century for his tremendous contributions to our understanding of the world around us, little is known about the private life behind his legendary persona. How did Einstein spend his life when not engaged in scientific pursuits? What were his interests? What in Einstein's background and everyday life inspired his development as a scientist and as a person? In this unique contribution to the Einstein literature, physicist and acclaimed science writer Barry Parker draws on the great scientist's letters and personal papers to explore the intellectual and emotional drives that motivated both his work and his life.
In EINSTEIN: THE PASSIONS OF A SCIENTIST, Parker focuses on five aspects of Einstein's emotional nature that had a profound impact on his life and his career. First and foremost was his love of learning, not only in physics but also in mathematics and philosophy. This was manifested early on when he excelled at algebra. However, he did have his share of conflicts with some teachers whose dictatorial approach to instruction he believed was wrongheaded and stifling. In later life Einstein became utterly absorbed with philosophy.
Einstein's "second love" was classical music, especially the music of Mozart. Parker shows that listening to and playing music (he was an accomplished violinist) were not only recreations for Einstein but also provided stimulation for his scientific creativity.
His frequent turbulent relationships with women and his family also greatly shaped his character and his work. Parker examines the influence of Einstein's parents and their financial woes during his childhood, his sister, his two wives, his liaisons with other women, and his distant relationship with his two sons from his first marriage.
Another fascinating dimension of Einstein's character was his strong antiwar stance and his advocacy for peace. Einstein considered world government the only means to achieve global peace. Parker dedicates a chapter to Einstein's humanist beliefs and his efforts to promote the idea of a world government.
Finally, Parker considers Einstein's utter obsession with finding a unified theory of physics to explain all the forces of the universe, and his reluctance to accept the indeterminacy of quantum theory. In the opinion of some colleagues, this was a tragedy, for Einstein isolated himself from the rest of the scientific community during the latter part of his life to pursue a lone quest that remained unfulfilled at his death.
Containing scores of fascinating stories and amusing anecdotes, this is an original, insightful behind-the-scenes look at one of the greatest geniuses of all time who did so much to shape our vision of the world. It will surely be of interest to anyone who wants to learn about the human side of this renowned scientist.
Customer Reviews:
A well written account of his life........2006-04-16
This book does an excellent job of telling the life of Einstein. The author, Barry Parker takes many accounts of his life and sums them all up into one book. The author was compelled to write about Einstein because of how important he was to our understanding of physics. I highly recommened this story because unlike most biographies this one throws in some humor, which keeps you interested. Also, this book not only talks about Einstein's many achievements but also takes you into his younger years. This book is also short so if you are interested in Einstein but do not want to read a 500 page book about him pick this one up. This book also includes many photographs and drawings of his early years and of people who influenced him in his life. My favorite fact of this book is that Einstein was not only interested in math and physics, but also enjoyed playing music.
The only negative part of this story is some of the chapters feel out of place. Parker begins to jump around near the end. Other then that it is an excellent read.
Einstein's Passions and Troublew.......2003-10-29
When most people think of Albert Einstein, they think only in terms of his older years. Parker's book takes the reader through his early years, some of which were quite stressful. Like most great musicians and artists he was quite poor when young. Also, his stubborness got him in trouble in school all the way through college. Parker's book is well written and depicts Einstein's trouble with things such as mathematics and having to write serveral theses for his doctorate before one was accepted. This book describes some of Albert's passions such as a love for physics, playing the violin, hiking, sailing and women.
An excellent read.......2003-10-16
I have just read "Einstein: The Passions of a Scientist" and found it to be most informative and entertaining. I have always been curious about Einstein, what kind of a person he was, what his interests were outside of science. Mr. Parker, in fine style, certainly answers those questions and more. He has a very arresting way of capturing Einstein's personality. Mr. Parker has a writing style that I find particularly easy to read and understand, a rare quality amongst science writers. Congratulations Mr. Parker for a book that not only held my complete attention throughout, but was also entertaining and educational. Geoff Pearson, Jacksonville, N.C.
"But I Know Mr. Einstein".......2003-10-13
I recall when I was a kid reading a piece in the Reader's Digest about "Mrs. Einstein" being interviewed by the press. "Do you understand the theory of relativity, Mrs. Einstein?" a reporter is said to have asked. "No," she demurely if rather smugly replied, "but I understand Mr. Einstein." Ha! Author Barry Parker, in "Einstein, the Passions of a Scientist" blows her cover. This was a man whose passionate interests were not limited to whether space was curved, and it is unlikely that either his first wife or his second was aware of the scope of his love life. In his lively and informative biography of the greatest scientist of our age, Barry Parker brings the man alive with a fascinating look at his personal life, as well as his intellectual one. A great read.
Einstein Awakening.......2003-10-10
If you didn't know much about the personal side of Einstein you do now. The book was stimulating, and has enlightened us to the human side of his persona. From his marriages and love of woman to his love of classical music he comes alive once again. Without finding all the answers he search for in his physics pursuits, he had many other faucets that shed a new light on who he was as a man, and not just a brillliant scientist. Wonderful book!

Customer Reviews:
This book is a Gift from God.......2006-03-26
I spent far too long in a verbally and emotionally abusive relationship. I thought it was my duty to stay because I had entered a covanent. A pastor told me that should I leave my marriage, I would have to be alone for the rest of my days unless my abusive husband took another wife or died. I was encouraged over and over to turn the other cheek and remember 77*7 and forgive.
But God heard my cries and led me to a book called Changes that Heal, and I learned that grace would always be available to me. I left my husband and filed for divorce. My abusive husband then pursued me (as is classic in the abuse cycle), was baptized and began to attend my church. The pastors began encouraging me to give my marriage and my husband an opportunity to repent for the sake of our daughter. I kept trying to explain that they didn't understand the abuse or the mind of the abuser enough to encourage more 77*7 (forgiveness). Eventually I relented and my daughter and I moved back in with the abuser.
The abuser was on a roll. He had won. The pattern started again within three months. Within a year, he was constantly used the bible to tell me that I was to obey him and stay with the abuse no matter what. A year later in a rage he threatened a neighbor with a gun in the presence of my daughter, and I walked away for good. But my heart was not at peace.
This book brought me peace like nothing else I've ever experienced. It explained God's views to me in a light I wished I had understood years ago. God is a God of love and grace. This book will teach you how that applies to walking away from abuse. Long suffering was Jesus' role, not the role of the abused spouse. I wished I could hug everyone of you that reads this, because you need someone who has been there and understands. God bless you. Read this book and begin taking care of yourself, the child God loves so much.
Great book for abused Christian women.......2002-11-21
This is a great book for Christian women. I am a victim and was concerned about what the Bible and the Lord would think about me having to get away of my husband because I was in fear of my life. This book points out specific scriptures of what the Bible says about husband's and wives staying together or apart and why it is okay to get away from your husband if he is abusive. I no longer feel guilty about having to get away from my husband. This is an absolutely fabulous book and I would recommend it for any woman who has been abused by her husband.
Highly Recommended by a Police Officer and Counselor.......2002-06-28
As a trainer of police officers on domestic violence response, and as a counselor of survivors, I highly recommend this book for all who suspect they are experiencing intimate partner abuse. It is also very important for family and friends. I have given away at least 20 copies to survivors and will continue to. Religion and faith are a foundation for the worldview of many and Ms. Fortune shows us all how scripture, used properly, can support and liberate victims. Keep copies of this book in stock for your clients, family members, and friends.
Restoring spiritual sanity to abused Christian women.......1999-09-28
This book was purchased and distributed by our local Domestic Violence Shelter to women who's faith stood in the way of their safety and sanity regarding whether or not it is God's will for them to live with abuse. I hope to buy more booklets to have available for this dedicated population.
Honest helpful and loving advice.......1999-03-17
This little book is quick to read and will help give you courage to do what is right. Sometimes Christian women get so bogged down in guilt and the need to save our marriage, that we forget to save ourselves. This book is a must read for anyone in an abusive marriage seeking spiritual guidance. Solid, Christlike interpretation of scripture will offer much needed inspiration and encouragement.

Customer Reviews:
Endless delicious, low-fat recipes!.......2005-01-28
I can't even begin to give you an idea of the incredible variety present here. However, I can say that I drooled over the salad chapter. Really. I don't even like salads all that much, normally. But the dishes in this book are fresh, original, delicious, simple, and, for the most part, very flavorful. The recipes and their directions are incredibly simple. The only nitpick I have is that sometimes it seems like a tiny bit more detail would be nice, such as exactly how thick they mean by "thickened." However, the recipes are simple enough conceptually that even with only a small amount of experience in the kitchen you should be able to figure them out.
I really love most of the flavors in this cookbook. Let's take a bean salad as an example. As a general rule, I really don't like beans much. You have to do something truly nifty to them for me to like them, and I don't think I've ever enjoyed a bean salad before. Ever. And neither has my husband. But the dressing looked so good (apricot preserves, ginger, vinegar, etc.) that I couldn't resist trying it, and we both loved it so much we practically couldn't stop eating it! The only thing we made that was bland was the mushroom rolls--there wasn't much in the way of flavoring agents, but all it took was a bit of spice mix to fix that. And I expect a friend of ours who enjoys bland food would have thought the recipe was fine, so that's more a matter of taste than anything else. I'm very impressed by cookbooks that can take foods I normally don't like and turn them into foods that I love, and this is certainly one of them.
Nutritional information is included with the recipes, including calories, fat grams, saturated fat grams, cholesterol, sodium, protein, carbohydrates, and exchanges. Unfortunately for people on the Weight Watchers POINTS system they don't include fiber. In the menus section they even include an assessment of the nutrition per serving for the entire menu as a whole!
I've really enjoyed using this cookbook, and plan to make many more recipes out of it. Oddly enough, I expect many of those to be from the bean and salad sections.
REAL ADVENTURE!!!.......2004-05-27
I am updating my review of November 3,2001. Have continued to work my way thru this cookbook via the index, and let me tell you, you never know what you're going to get. It has by now become quite obvious that this book suffers horribly from lack of editing. Many recipes are (or must be) a compilation of two recipes, and they just don't jive. This can be found mostly in the dessert section. Some are quite simply, not doable, period. How can you cut around the hole in a 9 x 5 inch loaf pan angel food cake? Don't you think they meant to use a 10-inch tube pan? But there are some recipes that are fantastic, such as a chocolate cake made from a homemade mix, and a flourless chocolate cake to die for. The bouillabaise is wonderful. Many are, many aren't. So, cooks, there is real adventure here. Is it going to be a winner or a dud? Get stirring and find out.
More than five hundred new and delicious recipes.......2003-04-16
Now in a completely revised, expanded, and updated edition, Sue Spitler's 1,001 Low-Fat Recipes is enhanced with the inclusion of more than five hundred new and delicious recipes. Most of the entrees feature ten or fewer ingredients and take less than thirty minutes to prepare. 1,001 Low-Fat Recipes offers the kitchen cook a culinary wealth of 64 appetizers; 77 soups; 43 salads; 54 chicken-based dishes; 42 pizzas; 44 vegetarian entrees; 53 pasta entrees; 45 meat dishes; 46 rice, grains and bean dishes; 17 breads and muffins; 50 seafood dishes; 46 vegetable dishes; 45 sauces; 125 desserts -- and more! Every recipe features nutritional facts for calories, fat, cholesterol, sodium, protein, carbohydrates, and diabetic exchanges. Now health conscious kitchen cookbook collection can be considered as complete or comprehensive without the inclusion of 1,001 Low-Fat Recipes!
Terrible cook book.......2002-09-05
The recipes from this book do not make for very delicious cooking. There is also an imbalance of recipes that are too simple (a fair amount microwave recipes) to ones that contain too many foreign ingredients.
Untitled.......2001-11-04
I've made maybe 20 or so recipes from this book and only two were worth making again. Some were just plain awful. And I'm considered a very good cook, having been doing this for over 30 years. I love to cook, but this one is not up to snuff. However, those two, apple pandowdy and apple cake, were just wonderful. So maybe if I go thru more of the recipes it will get better. One can only hope. I do appreciate all the exchange and calorie info.

THE POLICE DOG: A STUDY OF THE GERMAN SHEPHERD DOG (OR ALSATIAN) By David Brockwell A VINTAGE DOG BOOKS CLASSIC REPRINT. Originally published New York 1925, this scarce early work on theGerman Shepherd Dog (G.S.D.) is very hard to find in its first edition. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS have now republished it, using the original text and photographs, as part of their CLASSIC BREED BOOKS series. The book was originally published to assist American breeders and owners of the "Police Dog", which at that time was a relatively recent introduction in the U.S.A. Its objective was to provide a complete and concise knowledge of every phase of this breed. The book's two hundred and ten pages contain seven comprehensive chapters: Origin and History. - Appearance and Characteristics. - Breeding. - Care and Rearing. - Training (Emphasis on Police and Guard Dog Work) - Various Uses. - Diseases and Accidents. The book is well illustrated with text drawings and full page photographs of Champions of that era. This is a fascinating read for any G.S.D. enthusiast or historian of the breed, and also contains much information that is still practical and useful today. Many of the earliest dog breed books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now increasingly scarce and expensive. VINTAGE DOG BOOKS are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

The Police Dog: A Study Of The German Shepherd Dog .......2007-01-10
it was informative but not enough ilustrations and sometimes it left you wanting more.
Good for the novice or first time reader, that wants to know the origens of the breed
Product Description
This book offers hobbyists a guide to modeling locomotive service, repair, and storage terminals. Also includes tips and techniques for modeling trackage, structures, and other terminal details appropriate for the steam or diesel era.
Customer Reviews:
A Good Resource.......2007-02-27
Modeling trains allows the opportunity to put together a lot of fascinating machinery and buildings. People who like to build models tend to like to do that sort of thing and the instructions that come with the models are usually adequate. Unfortunately, that can leave a modeler with a really neat gizmo that he or she does not really understand in the great scheme of things. A nice sanding tower may be built but, once built, the modeler may have no idea about how it would be used in real life or where it would be most appropriate on a layout. This book explains things like that.
It does its explaining both in terms of steam and in terms of diesel equipment. It explains how real railroads operated to turn trains. Along the way, it also gives some good modeling tips.
Disappointing, superficial.......2005-09-12
There really is not enough information here to justify a separate book. The same information can be found in a lot of other books that cover a broader range of railroading topics. The book is particularly poor in its coverage of diesel servicing. It simply states that diesel facilities are too large to model and then reconstructs a small facility by setting up a Pikestuff building with some American Line accessories. That is a whole chapter in a nutshell. I think anyone purchasing a book like this would hope for a lot more information. They will not find it here. Basics like how to lay track or add turf effects should really be covered in other books and their inclusion here just seems filler. The author assumes that all people reading the book are working in HO scale.
Useful Guide.......2003-12-26
As with most books of this type, this is an extremely useful guide. Photos are crisp and text is well-detailed. Any modeler interested in modeling a free-lance engine terminal will find this a valuable resource.

Attention, chronic worriers: it is possible to reduce the intensity, frequency, and duration of painful episodes of anxiety without medication. Licensed counselor Pam Vredevelt draws from twenty years of clinical experience, scientific research, and scriptural insight to offer the reader tools for living a more peaceful and tranquil life. While worrying is for many a deeply embedded habit, because it was learned, it can be "unlearned," and with compassion and sound advice, Pam shows how.
Customer Reviews:
Mediocre book on dealing with worry and anxiety.......2004-09-06
I would give this book a C+. Most of the passages I hilighted were not the author's thoughts, but ideas she had pulled from the Bible or other books. She does have a few original ideas, but given the book's $10 price tag I wasn't overly impressed.
As strictly a counseling or self-help book, I think it falls short, perhaps an expanded Bible study version would be more appreciated.
Helpful.......2003-02-18
I found this book to be a good resource for ideas to stop the anxiety cycle. Practical advice, a good place to start before medication. Especially helpful for Christians, includes Bible references.
For religious people only........2003-02-08
Sorry but I didn't like this at all. I've read lots of helpful books on worry and anxiety, and this really is the poor man's version. It's not at all original and not particularly helpful. Overloaded with scripture, you may find it helpful if you're religious. If you're an atheist, or agnostic like myself, don't bother.
