An honest portrayal of what too many vets suffered.......2004-02-13
Mr. Sprouse's story is told is plain language, and holds a reader's interest. That means, unfortunately, that there were too many sad, scary, miserable, mistreated days to get through. The POW experience, particularly as a sample of the (under-reported and under-represented) Korean War story, is well-documented. The issue of "progressives" or collaborators is looked at without apology for naming names. The "and Beyond" part of the book is often forgotten more than the Korean War itself; Ted Sprouse and the authors speak for too many men. Not always uplifting, but a seriously good read.
A book you can't put down..........2000-06-13
This book is one of inspiration and courage... it is one you can not put down... The events these men went through makes you realize what you have in life and how friendship really can overcome all obstacles... I recommend this book to everyone... once your done reading, the triumph of all vetrans will stay in your heart and mind for a lifetime!
One you can't put down..........2000-06-12
This book is EXCELLENT! It is one you won't be able to put down... It is remarkable that this is a true story it just shows what our soldiers have truly done for our freedom... This book is one of inspiration and courage... and once your through you will look at life in a whole new perspective!
This is an inspirational book!.......2000-01-29
This was a very inspirational book, about a man who had to sacrafice alot for this great country of ours! The tellings of what he had to go through, and how those friends, he met along the way, helped him get through it all, is just very touching! It tells apart of our history not many people know about, and gives the deserved recognition to those men who fought in the Korean War. It certainly deserves 5 stars! I could not put it down, once I started reading it!

Book Description
"Light is a Messenger" is the first biography of William Lawrence Bragg, who was only 25 when he won the 1915 Nobel Prize in Physics - the youngest person ever to win a Nobel Prize. It describes how Bragg discovered the use of X-rays to determine the arrangement of atoms in crystals and his pivotal role in developing this technique to the point that structures of the most complex molecules known to Man - the proteins and nucleic acids - could be solved. Although Bragg's Nobel Prize was for physics, his research profoundly affected chemistry and the new field of molecular biology, of which he became a founding figure. This book explains how these revolutionary scientific events occurred while Bragg struggled to emerge from the shadow of his father, Sir William Bragg, and amidst a career-long rivalry with the brilliant American chemist, Linus Pauling.

Customer Reviews:
Not very helpful.......2007-04-18
I was disappointed in the small number of recipes in this book. The recipes were very plain.
Not for Low Carb-ers.......2006-03-11
I have watched Graham Kerr on television since I was a preteen, so I am well aware of his cooking talents, as well as the fact that he changed his lifestyle a complete 180 degrees since his wife had a heart attack; but I was not overly impressed with the cookbook. His recipes are not exciting, just plain simple fare, and absolutely not low carb.
Short and Sweet.......2005-07-25
Or should I say not sweet! Kerr's book, though small in size, is a great mini-lesson to the virtues of cooking with splenda. What I appreciated was his education on diabetes and practical approach to the sugar/splenda debate. While some would just cut all sugar out and use splenda only, for most generally this isn't necessary. He gives a great example of monitoring his wife's blood sugar and adjusting the size of the portion rather than cutting out all the sugar. He includes relevant updated information on diabetes as well as how to incorporate splenda into one's diet. What I liked most is his unique approach to the introduction of anything new and "healthy." Americans seem to have an aversion to eating healthy. Kerr, slowly introduces us to a healthy change little by little. Teaching us how to bring health to ourselves as well as the ones we love. The book only has 70 recipes but for me it was a perfect size. I was looking for a book with recipes I could serve my diabetic friends. It's nice to be able to serve them something they can eat without compromise or guilt.
Unclear on the concept.......2005-07-12
I bought this cookbook with the expectation that I would make desserts sweetened only with Splenda. To my surprise, the recipes use Splenda to reduce sugar, but include other ingredients such as corn syrup, brown sugar, honey, fruit juice, raisins, sweetened yogurt, candied ginger and canned fruit. On the plus side, it does give you exchanges and a nutritional breakdown for every recipe; but I will have to keep looking for a Splenda-only cookbook.
Ridding Empty Calories With Great Taste.......2004-11-27
Kerr is leading chef with the knowhow to keep it healthly and not sacrifice taste and scrumptuous dishes.
Here with his wife and food editor he takes on empty calories of sugars and salt and fat and white flour, replacing with especially the sugar substitute Splenda.
There is over 75 recipes for many food types, including Drinks, jellies, pickles, cookies, main dishes, desserts, etc.
Sampled so far with good results:Orange Mango Cocktail; Apple Walnut Muffins; Chocolate Roll with Raspberries; Pear, Cherry and Almond Strudel; Oatmeal Almond Crunch Cookies; Blackberries in Warm Custard. No photos don't distract too much from this helpful cookbook.
Excellent for those with diabetes or looking to trim waistline.

www.valderbeebeshow.com.......2006-03-05
Roby Webb, MS, and associate editor of Diabetes Forecast, shows us that food can be healthy, good, quick and an inspiration for cooks and guests to have fun. It's a comprehensive book that includes nutrition analyses, what's in the cupboard, meal planning, kitchen organization, what to buy, meal prep and time-saving ideas. I found a great Shrimp Gazpacho and Herbed Crab Sandwich to add to my summer repertoire.
NOT CHILD FRIENDLY MEALS.......2005-12-16
These are just OK recipes for adults but kids are never going to eat this stuff. Salmon in tomato sauce, shells agli olio, cod and shrimp soup. Yuck. The recipes are speedy but not very tasty.
Practical.......2005-09-17
These recipes, at least the ones I've tried, have been easy to make, use common ingredients, and taste really good! I highly recommend it!
Easy-to-make healthy dishes .......2005-06-09
Sometimes it seems healthy cooking just doesn't fit into the modern hectic schedule: it's far quicker to grab something high-carb and high-fat off the shelf when on the run. In reality, easy-to-make healthy dishes can be prepared almost as quickly, as Robyn Webb's 200 Healthy Recipes In 30 Minutes - Or Less demonstrates. From mustard-infused French Burgers to easy Chicken Nugget finger foods and salads, dietician Webb packs in dishes which lend to quick preparation while remaining healthy. The introduction on how to stock a kitchen for maximum 'fast food' cooking is particularly notable.
Review from the press - A note from the PUBLISHER.......2005-03-30
Snippets from Foreward Magazine (Book Review) -
Despite its title, Webb's newest cookbook is more than just a compilation of recipes: she delves into the whole process of organizing a kitchen, stocking a pantry, preparing weekly meal plans, and building shopping lists around those meal plans, including shopping monthly for staples.
Advance preparation is one of Webb's keys, and her tips for storing already-chopped onions and garlic in freezer bags, making double batches of marinades and salad dressings in advance, and freezing portions of fresh herbs and broth in ice cube trays, ready to pop into soups and stews, are great for cutting precious minutes off the nightly meal preparation.
Webb devotes one useful section of her book to what she calls "Quick Fixes." Here, she incorporates five staples -canned beans, canned broth, pasta, rice, and canned fish-into quick and easy ideas for those times when there seems to be "nothing to eat at home." She offers five recipes for each staple; tasty sounding examples are the Clear Asian Soup, Hungarian Noodles, and Salmon Niçoise.
In the last section, the author offers complete menus for myriad special occasions, including an Italian dinner featuring Chicken Rigatoni and Parmesan Zucchini, an Andalusian Supper with Shrimp Gazpacho and Roasted Vegetable Burritos, and a Dixieland dinner highlighted by Pork in Bourbon Maple Marinade. This engaging cookbook enables her to bring her techniques to an even wider audience. ~ Deborah Donovan

Customer Reviews:
Defeating the Dream.......2006-08-14
I suspect that everyone who really enjoys model railroads has a dream of building huge layout someday. Everyone knows that it almost never happens but, still, it's nice to dream. Even when the dream is not realized fully, there are stages that most go through. A small layout is built. With the experience gained in doing that, a medium sized one is built and from there a large one may be built. All of this is in preparation for someday building the whopper.
This book takes a dream killing but realistic approach. It points out the reasons why the dream will probably never be built. It also points out reasons not to build it even if time, money and space were available to do so. The arguments are well reasoned and cogent. The problem is that they help to kill the dream.
That is not the main purpose of the book, though. The main purpose is to provide track plans and ideas for mid sized layouts. That it does well. The pictures are nice and visually interesting. Most of the text, though, details the background of the railroad upon which the model is to be based. This too is well read.
The plans are nice but the dream has suffered.
Elegant and compact model rail plans.......2005-09-22
Mr. Rice has an eye for elegance. His model railroad track plans lay a foundation for creating a distinctive feel of a prototype railroad in a small space. The plans in this book are well within the reach of the average person with a spare bedroom or corner of a garage or basement. They are small enough to be operational soon enough to stave off discouragement and challenging enough to keep an operator or three busy for several hours.
A good book, but flawed.......2003-09-09
"Mid-Sized & Manageable" is a wonderful track-planning book that belongs on the shelf of anyone who is currently spending a lot of time thinking about model railroad design. Rice's entertaining writing style and his charming water colors of the layout designs make for an entertaining book. The layout designs themselves are nice, although the text descriptions are lacking for many of the layout ideas. After reading a few, I was left wondering if the Kalmbach editors had hacked away half the text in the interest of keeping the book short. If so, it is sorely missed. In addition, the layout diagrams are sometimes badly mislabeled, with missing titles and apparently misplaced arrows.
My greater gripe with the book is that it looks to me as though Mr. Rice, after his amazing and thought-provoking first Kalmbach effort "Small, Smart, & Practical", was asked to write a book that uses "American-style" layout design. (An impression that was backed up by the non-sequitur inclusion of vaguely related photos from old Model Railroader magazine articles.) As such, it is missing the space-saving and life-simplifying devices such as "cassettes", sector plates, modular design, etc. There's very little here that has not already been done by John Armstrong.
In short, it's a really nice book and I don't mean to be too harsh--I expect I'll refer to it every now and then as I plan my new layout. Very entertaining writing, good prototype (and not-so-prototype) inspirations, and I always look forward to the illustrations. If you are looking for a standard Kalmbach-style book chock-full-o' layout plans, it's a good one. However, I hope to see another book on the topic whenever Mr. Rice can get back to it, one that provides a more convincing answer to the question I had in my mind as I paid for this book--"What would Iain Rice do if he had an entire 20ft. by 20 ft. basement at his disposal for his model trains?"
Full color photographs & extensively detailed instructions.......2003-08-10
Written by Iain Rice (a model railroad enthusiast and author of 11 modeling handbooks), Mid-Sized & Manageable Track Plans is a straightforward guide to creating track plans and track backgrounds to appropriate N & HO scales. Full color photographs, extensively detailed instructions, and no-nonsense advice combine to make Mid-Sized & Manageable Track Plans a first-rate addition to any dedicated model railroad hobbyist's personal reference collection.

Excellent Landscaping Book.......2007-06-05
I compared several landscaping books before buying this one. I viewed them in bookstores and at home depot. This one has excellent ideas and instructions, and I especially like the photographs which are very detailed and add clarity to the instructions with visual aids. I am very happy with my purchase.

Very Pleased.......2002-01-30
I have a 15 1/2 year old daughter living at home and a 20 1/2 year old who has moved out. This book is very helpful and very specific to specific issues. Each child is different but this gives you useful information to be used on different kinds of young people. The book is realistic and helpful.
Children don't come with a manual and this book is like having a manual. I have recommended it to several of my friends.
Great book!

short stories.......2006-06-23
the book is a biogaphy with translation/summary of Dazai's short stories. a very interesting book, however, information sometimes can be too brief. if you want to know more about Dazai's life, this book might not be your best choice; neither is the short stories complete. however, if you want a little bit of both without getting into petty details, this is a great book.
