Earl is my great uncle and I can honestly say that I never had much interest towards WWII until I read his book. Knowing that he was in Germany and the ordeals he had to go through really put things into new perspectives for me. I applaud his writing and I encourage everyone who reads this to share in my great uncle's story.

A real story you must read!.......2002-05-25

As a child I knew Earl Parker. He was a friend of my fathers. I never knew of his experiences until I read this book. I found out about the everyday heroism that won the war: helping your buddies and maintaining your humanity when in inhuman situations. Earl's stories of surviving capture at the battle of the bulge are told in a matter of fact way that shows you the attitude of this generation. It was their duty to fight and to survive AND to retain their humanity. They risked their lives for their families, friends and freedom and we owe them a debt. This is a simple narrative that inspires me, especially since I knew the man. His strength, his simple leadership and his humility provide an example to us all.

Wilbur and Orville were two eccentric owners of a bicycle shop in the heartland. But it was invention, engineering, and the new possibilities of manned flight that obsessed them. In just three years, they went from designing and flying a glider and creating a test wind tunnel to Wilbur's history-making moments in December 1903 above the dunes at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. In moving prose, Crouch and Jakab explain the Wrights' achievements and the moments of their great successes, and they paint a masterful personal portrait of the two sometimes erratic, genius personalities (never married, the brothers lived together all their lives), and, most important, the world of pioneering aviation in which they operated.

Poignant archival photographs throughout the book capture that world, where ox carts and airplanes co-existed and where two determined brothers from Dayton were celebrated by presidents and kings. But the most poignant of all the images remains that of an airplane, almost kite-like in its simplicity, struggling skyward from the dunes at Kitty Hawk.

How history gives birth to a new age?.......2006-07-27

Discount the "genius" factor, the elder brother, Wilbur Wright, argued. It was an aggregation of peculiar circumstances that led the two brothers to succeed where many predecessors had failed. The author describes those peculiar circumstances in lengthy details that could be summed up as follows:

1- The religious, rigid, uncompromising father of two sons and a daughter had passed to them his character of steadfastness and distrust in the world around them. That isolated them from others. Their introversion contributed to their dedication to hard work. Hard work led to learning of new skills. Their introverted sister stayed unmarried until 52. Her income and strong dedication to her family supported the odd and bizarre experimentation of her two brothers. The feud of their father with the church led them to move and the two brothers failed to graduate from high school. Thus, they faced more hard work and despair.

2- Starting a new business in printing local newspapers helped them in two ways. They followed the scientific progress of previous flight efforts by the German and French and mastered new mechanical skills on how to make machines work. A friend of the Wrights sneaks under a printer to figure out how it does the printing despite its mute existence, to no avail. The Wrights entrusted machines to do impossible tasks that defy common sense.

3- Their failure in the printing business got them into the bicycle business. Here, they refined their mechanical skill further but learned a pivotal key to their future success. That is: control. Bicycles are the most complex machines that man has invented since they depend on the instinct of brain control in order to maintain equilibrium (balance). That control factor will give birth to the new age of flight.

4- Their literary knowledge gained from printing, mechanical craftsmanship gained from designing bicycles and fixing printers, had coincided with the role of the Smithsonian Institute and a childhood's toy of a helicopter brought to them by their father. The death of a famous German glider few years earlier induced them to approach the Smithsonian Institute for information on flight machines.

5- Living in rural Ohio in 1900 afforded them the space and time to aspire for a new dream to fame and wealth. The vast landscape and observation of nature sustained their curiosity and hope for attaining fame. They rose above their neighbors with their noisy and huge boxy flight machines, while their father had failed to rise above his adversaries in the local church.

6- What set them different from others was the common sense of lay persons. The three dominant steps for attempting flying at those days were: obtaining power for propulsion using heavy steam engines, starting with small models of manned machines, and gliding. The Wright's common sense of mastering "control" first of all stemmed from their bicycle experience.

7- They started with unmanned kites, worked on their aeronautic control and equilibrium when airborne, then manned the controllable glider, and finally added power to it. Progressively, they pushed for distance, airborne time, and altitude, until gained confidence in their ability to control take off, balance, and landing. Their contribution to the flight is founded on their demonstration that control of an airborne, heavier than air flying machine was within reach. (Haven't birds mastered that principle for millenniums?)

8- In 1908, they were transformed from destitute common people into world figures welcomed by the monarchs of Italy, Britain, Spain, and Germany. In a photograph prior to flying over the Governor's Island in New York, Wilbur looked miserably depressed while three New York Policemen watched him gambling with his life. He realized the perils of being alone in a new age. With a suit, tie, and soft hat, approaching the age of 40, conquering the air alone with no substantial gain, frightened the elder brother. Yet, he died from typhoid fever shortly afterwards. He always felt that success and happiness had passed him by since his early years. In a Carnival to honor their achievement, Wilbur felt being used for advertisement gimmicks for the city. His depression stood in his way to rejoice his historic accomplishment.

9- Their rigid upbringing, though aided them battle the painstaking experimentation with aeronautics; it hampered their ability to excel in the world of businessmen. Their patent did not offer them secure, affluent living and the fast pace technology had surpassed them sooner than they expected. They were born to serve the history and the only reward they got was honor. They lived and died in their father's home, unmarried to the end.

This describes my husband 100%.......2007-10-07

This is one of the few books of this nature where I have read every single page. It describes my husband to a T-for-testoterone. While my husband insists that there is nothing wrong with him, and the rest of the world is against him, I have been able to encourage some of the diet changes: a multi-vitamin (for zinc and B-vitamins), and cutting back on artificial sweetener.

When I sent an e-mail to the author, I did get back a thoughtful referral, although the referrals are to expensive places that are out of state. But it's helpful to have this book, because I can cite it to health and mental health care professionals, "see, what he does is on page 42, and 43, and 44 ..."

I agree that it does go on and on before getting to the helpful information in the back third of the book. My guess is the publisher wanted to get it up to a certain page count. I get the picture with one or two examples, but I would rather have more information, than less information. So this is not a major detraction, and the book was VERY helpful in articulating what I see to be true.

Now if I can only figure out how to get my husband to agree to get help. I am not ready to issue a divorce ultimatum, but if the angry blowups continue, what else can I do? At least I'll have some informed suggestions to make when the time comes.

An Absolute Eye-Opener!!!!!!.......2006-11-01

This book has effected the way I think about men, women, relationships, myself, and the people close to me. Jed Diamond has incorportated medical and psychological research, the experiences of his patients (male and female), and his own experiences as therapist and husband into an insightful book that is not only informative, but hopeful and humorous at times.

This book is written directly for men, but continually allows for the reader as a woman who is involved with a man that may be suffering from Irritable Male Syndrome. Several questionnaires included in the book are helpful with identification of Irritable Male Syndrome and depression, and the author covers physical, psychological, and societal causes. I particularly liked his take on changing gender roles and masculine identity.

I was a little disappointed in the organization of the book in that all of the information about what to do to help yourself (if you're a man) or help your partner (if you're a woman) is in the third and last section of the book. I would have preferred helpful information along the way according to the cases and ideas he presents. All in all, a great find!

Give me some real information.......2006-10-30

I decided not to buy this book, the single male reviewer called himself MY PEN IS HUGE and suggested the material was too lengthy and involved. What did he learn? Does someone with such a moniker want to learn anything? The other two reviews were from women, one a librarian who has some insight, but the other is a housewife who drives home a whining litany of tears and letters to her husband through this book. What did she learn? She gives no clue. I would love to just browse through books that can give me some insight into men's behavior and physiology with some male reviews, so I know I'm getting the goods. What I find is over fifty pages of books mislisted under male interests that include hundreds of books on female infertility and eating disorders. Can it be that a male interested in those subjects cannot find those topics under their proper divisional list? Perhaps that is understood here as a male characteristic of not being able to find his way and hating to ask directions. I hate wading through so many titles that are unnecessary to my search. I am a sixty year old female RN doing research.

Why Men Become Curmudgeons.......2006-07-24

AARP Bulletin tipped me off to this book. What an eye-opener! The author, a psychotherapist, observed that 80% of his patients in the 40 to 55 year range suffered from this irritability. He attributes it mostly to hormone changes, but also to their stage in life/career/etc.
He recommends that both partners learn to focus on the other's needs rather than on who's right and who's wrong.

35 Year Old Male Reads Book - Admits Issues .......2006-05-08

This is informative, full of facts and examples, but tends to run in circles and is too lengthy. Finishing the book helped me understand my emotions like the South Beach Diet helped me understand my appetite.

The Saints and The Winemakers.......2006-08-13

Paul Lukacs' lusciously readable volume is a tribute to American wine, and its very existence is a tribute to American wine drinkers. As he observes, it's a book that "[o]nly a generation ago...would have been regarded as a joke." [p.13} Of course, a generation ago was the ego-mad, lightly-smoked seventies when anything seemed posssible. In that generation, a few hundred Americans invested their time and their money in making wines and some of those wines ended up among the world's best.
Lukacs' book consists of forty portraits that are more about winemakers and winegrowers than about the wines themselves.
No matter. Their quixotic vision attached to a modest and very earthy end-a bottle of wine- makes for forty very interesting heroes and heroines. These are the people who invested lives and fortunes in wine at a time when that investment seemed romantic to very few Americans. When they began, they had little reason to believe that great wine was possible and not much reason for thinking that their countrymen would ever care about it if it were.
But interesting or even compelling subjects aren't enough to make a good book, and Lukacs's prose is, like a good wine, well balanced and generous. He wears his extensive knowledge of wine graciously and shares it easily. It's no small part of the book's charm that every chapter is loaded with information about the history and culture of wine so that the book ends up as worth studying as well as browsing. Having written a wine book myself, I appreciate the difficulty of the job. Best of all, the individual chapters are an endorsement for the idea that there is serious purpose in simple pleasures.
The Great Wines of America belongs on the same shelf, and a bit ahead of, Butler's Lives of the Saints. While Butler's saints are often difficult people, and their virtue something of a rebuke to the believing reader, Lukacs's pioneers are people we could imagine being ourselves. When they succeed, we do too. And besides, between saints and winemakers, who would you rather spend your time with?

Engaging look at key American wineries.......2006-05-08

This is a carefully focused look at the best of current American wines and wineries. The subtitle makes it clear that the wineries (and the vintners) share equal billing with the wines. The book is not intended to be read from front to back, but rather to be looked at from time to time, to learn more about a particular grape variety or wine-growing region.

The author has visited each winery, explains how it came into being, and quotes extensively the key persons involved with its success. The reasons for selecting the particular wine become evident as the chapter on it and the winery making it unfolds. The chapters are all about ten pages long, including a page of maps and a page giving the label and notes on vintages to buy and when they will be at their best.

The very long editorial review given above misses some key points. Perhaps the author simply read the book straight through (not what is intended, as noted above). However the chapter on Stone Hill Norton hardly could have been studied very carefully. Norton is the only grape variety in the book that is native to the U.S. It is not an eastern, labrusca, variety. Unless you have tried it (I have) you cannot seriously make an comparison of it with a "lush" cabernet sauvignon. The two grapes simply are different. They each can be truly outstanding, but not identical.

The editorial reviewer does make one accurate point: the chapters indeed ALL are informational. But that is the purpose of the book. The repetition claimed by that reviewer is so that the reader can start with any wine of interest. The variety of approaches used by the author are calibrated to the variety of wineries, some with a long history others very recent, some corporate and others small and family run.

There are many lists of "best" wines. They all give only brief justifications for the selections. This book does much more. It will be rewarding reading for novices and experts, alike.

outstanding graduate level introduction.......2003-01-22

This is the best book on bipolarism that my (bipolar I) wife and i have ever read. It combines readability with many references to academic/medical studies and snippets from interviews of bipolars. The book is informative and detailed as well as compassionate. The anecdotal pieces are not vague musings about being bipolar, but rather personal experience to complement the scientific data of any given topice. The book does not forever dwell on what bipolarism is, but instead quickly details the disease then moves on to how to continue living with the highest possible quality of life when you have the disease. Like any good graduate text, it starts with the most basic information and quickly helps the reader up the learning curve of the topic to discuss the most advanced and recent research on how to deal with the illness. This book is outstanding.

Excellent book for taking control of mood swings!.......2002-07-11

I bought this expecting some kind of basic book on bipolar but it is so much more. The mood charts & advice on medicines and natural health are something I should have had years ago. Left me asking why I had to buy a book to find out these things, and thinking about buying another copy for my doctor.

This book is mislabled.......2002-05-26

Except for 2 Chapters in the book the bulk talks about areas other than Bipolar illness. This would be good as a dictionary if you wanted a paragraph or two only on something related to different topics that cover mental illnes. It does introduce the novice to wide variety of possible treatments and physical illness that might cause a misdiagnoses of Bipolar illness. Its a good starting point for futher reading.
