Book Description

When noted English author Rudyard Kipling pulled strings at the beginning of World War I to get his son a commission in the Irish Guards, he little realized that he was sending the young man to his death.

John Kipling's death was made even more tragic by the fact that his burial place could not be identified. Rudyard Kipling's life-long quest to find his son's resting place had not been achieved by the time of his death and John Kipling's grave was not positively identified until 1992.

4 out of 5 stars A Great War Mystery ??.......2001-04-12

Although born in England, I knew very little about Rudyard Kipling. This book covers Kipling's life from childhood thru death and shows how his character influenced his only son into joining the Irish Guards at the beginning of the Great War. His son was killed on his first day in combat and his body never recovered. Now, 77 years later, they think they have found him - or have they ? All the evidence is presented for the reader to decide. A good read.

I was captivated, and dismayed, while reading this story...which is true. My heart goes out to Mr. Kipling, and his family, living through such harrowing times. I cannot imagine the pain but come close by reading the words. It breaks my heart such a brilliant young man was lost so soon.

4 out of 5 stars Educating the Boy to be a Man.......2005-07-15

Farmer Boy
Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867-1957) wrote her stories about living in the late 19th century. She married Almanzo Wilder (from Malone NY, near the Canadian border), another pioneer who came west as a young man. This book is about young Almanzo and his life as a farmer boy. They ate a hearty farm breakfast. Calories don't count when you walk everywhere, work all day long, and live in a house lacking central heating when it is forty below zero.

Chapter 4 tells schooling in the good old days. Perhaps its explains why William Quantrill or George A. Custer were teachers before their military careers? Chapter 7 describes old-fashioned twisted doughnuts that turn over when cooked in oil. It tells how people lived without running water or electricity for dishwashing. Chapter 9 tells about breaking the calves. You could never teach an animal if you struck it, or shouted at it. You must always be gentle and quiet and patient. The animal must trust to be hard-working. Chapter 11 describes spring planting. Then there was sheep-shearing (Chapter 14). Almanzo's father explains that money is the result of hard work. You can spend and lose it, or you can buy a piglet, raise it, and get more money for it. Father explains that while guns won the Revolution, it was axes and plows that made America by farming the land (Chapter 16). Almanzo had mischievous ways (Chapter 18). Chapter 22 tells of the butchering, and how every part was used. Note how often these memories have to do with feasting on holidays (Chapter 26). Smells evoke memories.

The book tells of a year in Almanzo's life as a farmer boy, through the cycle of seasons. Its descriptions of life long ago is educational and entertaining. The book presents thrift as the optimal virtue, and better than squandering or parsimony. The events show that human nature hasn't changed much. Almanzo's father gave him a good practical education to prepare him to for his future. Father and Mother discuss Almanzo's future. Would he become a wheelwright and townsman, dependent on trade, or be an independent farmer and raise his own and other's food? You know how he decides.

Now it can be told. When Mother came home she saw the papered-over spot on the wall paper the very next day. She quickly figured out what happened, as Mothers usually do. But she decided not to make a fuss over it, as the children fixed their mistakes.

    Book Description

In a memorable address given at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Paris in 1900, David Hilbert, perhaps the most respected mathematician of his time, developed a blueprint for mathematical research in the new century.

The collections of problems he presented in that address has become a guiding inspiration to many mathematicians, and those who have succeeded in solving or advancing their solutions form an Honors Class among research mathematicians.

With the support of many of the major players in the field, the author has written an engaging account of the achievements of this Honors Class, covering mathematical substance and biographical aspects.

2 out of 5 stars too much chat, not enough math.......2007-09-24

I was hoping for something more like The Millennium Problems: The Seven Greatest Unsolved Mathematical Puzzles of Our Time, an explanation of the problems and how they were solved, at a reasonably accessible level. This book appears to be just chat about the funny people who become math professors. Sort of interesting, but not what I wanted.

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!.......2005-09-16

As a career scientist for over 50 years, I am versed in mathematics but not exactly a mathematician. I bought it to become familiar with Hilbert's problems. I quickly realized that Yandell's book was more about the attempters and solvers than about the problems. Yet the problems are described too, in considerable and certainly sufficient detail.

What was ultimately fascinating was the web Yandell weaves throughout the book. Those famous mathematicians and their colleagues, their personal lives, those famous problems, and all integrated so cohesively.

When I started reading I knew I was in for a long adventure. In fact, it took me over a year to read - of course, only an hour or so every few days. What extended it was the temptation to go back and reread, again and again. Finally, a week ago, I turned the last page. With great reluctance I put it on my bookshelf. I had a strong urge to start all over again from the very beginning, and I knew if I succumbed I was in for another year with it.

As I reflect, partly it was the subject - those difficult problems in such vastly different fields. Partly it was those mathematicians - many of them already heroes of mine. But mostly it was Yandell's skill in putting together this riveting accounting. His love of and fascination with mathematics, and his desire to share his romanticism with others, comes through so clearly. It is sad that he died, at the young age of 53, a scant two years after writing this book. Of a heart attack and multiple sclerosis. What a tragic loss. He was a gem.

Even if you are only mildly interested in mathematics, its history and personalities, you will absolutely love this accounting of it.

2 out of 5 stars Feels like a dutiful summary.......2005-05-21

First, my background: I am not a mathematician, but an academic with fair knowledge of college math and even some advanced materials. I do greatly enjoy reading books about mathematics and mathematicians.

This book is obviously a work of great effort by the author. My difficulty probably came from the work's ambitious premise: offering mathematical and biographical history of Hilbert's problems. There are simply too many ideas and persons (some well known, others a bit obscure to lay reader like myself) to cover in one book. The author dutifully and honestly gives references to his sources. My impression is that the author collected as much material as he could about each problem and solvers, and tried to squeeze the information as compactly as possible into the pages.

The result: the narrative is very methodically told - explanation of the problem, some necessary ideas introduced, who the major solvers were, then a short biography of each solver, when and where they were born, who their parents were, where they went to school, who they married and so on; then another cycle begins. Halfway into the book, I began to get bored.

I can imagine mathematicians enjoying a quick review of and glimpses into their discipline and heroes, but lay readers much beware. I recommend lay readers to check out a few pages carefully online or at your local library to see whether you like it. I certainly didn't hate it but did not like it as much as I expected.

    5 out of 5 stars A great work.......2004-01-24

Due to rapid development of mathemtics in the last century, now one cannot master all subfects of mathematics. This is also true for those historians. Most of the boods of " History of Mathematics " end in the beginning of 20th century. So we know very little about the conteporary mathematicians. This book can be described as a gap for it. After readiming this book, not only you have a knowledge about the life of the great mathemaitcians, you also get the period in World War II how Nazis forced those mathematicians out of Germany and the reason why U. S. A. is now the leading centre of mathematics.

4 out of 5 stars Useful and insightful.......2003-10-11

The book is well written with the right mix of anecdote and theory. What I do like about it is the fact that we find out a little more about the lives of mathematicians, and they are portrayed as people rather than idols.

Where the book falls down is that it goes into a little too much detail of the theorems, something which the non-mathematician will undoubtedly find hard to follow.

                              Book Description

Knitting is in. Julia Roberts knits, high schoolers are knitting in the cafeteria, urbanites are knitting on the subway, college students are knitting in the dorms, and bookstores are sponsoring knitting groups. Colorful new yarns, the availability of simple patterns, gift giving, stress relief - all are reasons for picking up knitting needles and getting started on a great project.

Though knitting is growing in popularity, knitters still want projects that are fast and easy, but ultimately useful and attractive. KNIT MITTENS! is a colorful die-cut book that's small enough to tuck into a knitting bag, backpack, or purse.

The book begins with an easy-to-understand, illustrated overview of the basic techniques followed by 15 fun project patterns (with instructions for a range of sizes) bound between sturdy, die-cut board covers. Each pattern includes the following: a close-to-life-size color photo of the completed mitten or hat; a brief introduction to the pattern; materials and equipment lists; gauge information; a color chart; special tips and hints; and a detailed drawing of any unusual techniques involved. Because the rich palette flows through each book, knitters can mix and match hats (in Knit Hats!) and mittens to create unique sets.

2 out of 5 stars Good at first glance, but annoying to use.......2007-01-03

At first glance, this seemed like a great little book with a variety of interesting patterns: lots of stranded colorwork, felted mittens, a good variety of sizes.
                              - I liked the layout of the instructions in tables so you can easily keep track of the numbers for the size you're making.
                              - I also liked the fact that the instructions for the left and right hand shapings are written out, rather than the author just saying "repeat, reversing shaping for the other hand."

However, there were definitely a few annoyances that I ran into when I started trying to use the book:
                              - No row gauge given for the patterns! I'm currently almost at the end of my first North Star Mitten and it looks like even though I was over on stitch gauge, my row gauge is tighter than what the author assumes, and my mitten will end up being shorter than my hand. For plain stockinette patterns, I guess this doesn't matter much since the row/stitch ratio is usually pretty consistent, but with the combination of colorwork and yarn worked on smaller needles than recommended, it would be really helpful if the author also gave ROW GAUGE instead of just telling you "x stitches per inch."
                              - No yardage information for the yarns used--the author just tells you the number of skeins of a certain kind of yarn. If you want to substitute yarns, it's up to you to research the recommended yarns on the Internet if you want to find out how many yards this translates to. If some of these are partial skeins, this isn't specified either.
                              - There is no single glossary of knitting terms. I encountered the abbreviation "ssk2tog" in one place and had to hunt all over the book to figure out if this was the same as the term that is usually written "ssk." (Yes, it is.) I also had to cross-reference a couple of different pages to find the author's definition of "M1". I prefer books that list all their abbreviations together, in a single glossary at the end, rather than scattering them throughout the book in cute little sidebars.
                              - I would have liked the mittens to all come in a consistent range of sizes. The "chicky feet" mittens were cute, but only had instructions for children's sizes. It would have been great to see children's, women's, and men's sizes for all the mittens.
Overall, it's a nice little book to get out from the library (which is what I did) but I probably wouldn't buy it.

Great book for visuals, methods, sizing and great instructions. Easy to modify most patterns to suit your own particular needs.
Great Addition to a home knitting library!

I wish I hadn't spent the money on this book, which I got becuase it's companion "Knit Hats!" was excellent. Knit Mittens! does not have the variety of interesting concepts and patterns found in Knit Hats! I wouldn't reccomend this book to anyone if they haven't looked through it themselves and decided whether or not it is worth buying for the few patterns they will probably enjoy.

                              3 out of 5 stars Good tips.......2003-06-09

Being a beginner knitter, I rather like this book than the Knit Hats book. Although the 2 books have color knitting, this one on mittens gives out several tips on how to continue with the color patterns when increases are made for the mittens and the explanation can be easily understood. Just wish they teach how to continue the color patterns if there are decreases.

                              5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2003-02-13

I love the patterns in this book and the way the book is laid out. The directions are easy to follow. I especially like the charts letting you choose other yarn, gauge, and size of mitten. I really dislike it when a pattern calls for one size yarn and I want to use another. This book helps you avoid that.

Often gardeners become so enslaved to the work of maintenance and transformation that they neglect the meditative potential of their green space. Worrying over the details, the whole picture is sometimes lost. This is an attitude Herb Gustafson hopes to check in The Art of Japanese Gardens, a beautifully photographed book that creates in the reader a longing for total silence. Photographs of tranquil bridges, bright spidery Japanese maple leaves, and shimmering ponds are accompanied by unpretentious philosophical asides like "Our gardens can become a profound representation of the universe as a whole," and "We must pause to reflect on our journey thus far." Gustafson is not a stickler for historical detail: his notion of a "Japanese" garden is a hybrid of styles, some ancient, some modern. Chapters include "Boundaries," in which a variety of fences, walls, and gates are presented along with accessible descriptions of construction techniques. The third chapter explores that great dreamlike element of the traditional Japanese garden: the constant sound of running water, artificial streams where "we sit and are relaxed by the never-ending flow."

To truly carry out many of Gustafson's projects, the reader needs to be extremely handy, or planning on hiring a professional. It's also an ideal coffee-table book for the urban apartment dweller who needs to be reminded of peaceful spaces every once in a while, even when the "journey thus far" seems like a series of missed connections and splitting headaches. --Emily White

                                Book Description

Nourish the soul and restore the spirit in your own Japanese garden! This inspirational and photo-packed guidebook shows how to create the sense of harmony and balance that are so much a part of Zen philosophy. Every element that goes into the garden has meaning, along with its careful arrangement, and its use of natural and unobtrusive materials (like bamboo). Walls, fences, and paths provide security, beauty, and boundaries that separate and frame various areas. Boulders, stones, and gravel contrast with smooth, flowing ponds and rushing waterfalls. No detail goes unexplained--from adding koi and water plants to setting up viewing stations and putting up a teahouse. It will be a place of peace, restfulness, and emotional refreshment. 128 pages (all in color), 8 1/2 x 11.

                                  Winner, 1992 Canada-Japan Book Award

With the bombing of Pearl Harbour in December 1941, all persons of Japanese descent were declared 'enemy aliens.' Their assets were seized and most of the Japanese Canadian population was relocated or sent to internment camps. Stone Voices is a selection of memoirs, diaries, and letters written by four Issei, the first generation of Japanese to settle in Canada.
