    Book Description

    A celebration of aviation's first 100 years.

In 1903, the Wright Brothers achieved powered flight for the first time in history. Today, the wingspan length of commercial aircraft surpasses the distance of Orville Wright's first flight.

Wild About Flying is the story of flight as told through the people who changed the world forever. The book tells the true-life adventures of the pioneers, inventors, aviators, designers, engineers, navigators, test-pilots and visionaries who were responsible for developing one of mankind's most important inventions. Lively biographies of 54 famous, notorious, and lesser known aviation characters create a panoramic history of flight from its crude beginnings to the sophistication of space travel. The book also includes two illustrated timelines: The first features aviation's principal players and the second depicts the important technical advancements of specific aircraft.

Illustrating the text are 200 superb color paintings by internationally recognized aviation artist, David Marshall. His dynamic, historically accurate, and inspiring images are technically correct and the perfect complement to these engaging stories.

5 out of 5 stars Great paintings of classic aircraft.......2004-08-16

This large format book has two major appeals: the beautiful paintings that illustrate the planes - and the nicely written biographical pieces. Each section averages about 3 pages, some more, some less. Typically there are 2-3 small photos and 3-4 paintings (some large) per story. There are about 60 such sections, each on a famous flyer or flight. This a much more international selection than you're used to seeing.

While the stories are fascinating, it's the paintings that will draw you back again and again to this book. They appear to be a mixture of oils and watercolors I think (I'm no artist!). Many are beautiful action scenes; all show great detail.

This is the kind of book that will inspire you to go buy a cheap set of watercolors and see if you can capture some of this magic yourself!

    Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Art Drew Me In - But the Biographies Held Me!.......2004-04-06

This well-illustrated and well-written book will fill in some of the interesting missing chapters from the story of flight. Any student of flight's first century will have developed a mental catalog of the famous fliers of the period. In this collection of refreshing biographies that Bruce Harris has woven together, most of those particular names will prove to be missing. In their place are over two hundred of the less recognized pioneers of flight. In reading this book, I will hazard to guess that you'll meet at least two dozen people for the first time. Fill in a few missing chapters from the story of flight from the pages of this well-researched and enjoyable book.

    Book Description

The image was shocking: a couple wearing protective suits and masks in their own home! The accompanying USA Weekend story documented the mold-related headaches, fatigue, and respiratory problems that forced Melinda Ballard and Ron Allison to abandon their dream house, leaving all their possessions behind. Another family was so terrified that they had their mold-filled house torn down.

Mold growth threatens property managers and builders, as well as home owners and renters. Legal settlements in some mold cases have reached the millions, and home insurance rates are skyrocketing. Some people argue that mold concerns are exaggerated; others are convinced that mold growth is destroying their health.

In The Mold Survival Guide, a prominent indoor air quality professional teams up with a writing specialist to describe mold, to explain where and why it flourishes in homes, and to offer advice on how to eradicate mold while minimizing health risks. The book includes a chapter by two physicians who explain how exposure to mold can affect health.

With clear scientific explanations and expert advice, The Mold Survival Guide is a valuable resource for anyone worried about a common household problem that can have serious consequences.

    4 out of 5 stars It's more than mold.......2007-08-18

I am a Certified Microbial Consultant (mold inspector) and a board member of the American Indoor Air Quality Council. I have this book in my library as a reference. It's quite comprehensive.

Jeffrey has done a god job. It's written for the lay person but also contains a lot of technical information (and technically correct information). The publisher is John Hopkins University. So it's a good read for the academics.

A good, comprehensive book for those who need to know about mold.

5 out of 5 stars Calm and Information Guide .......2006-04-07

Despite the name "survival guide" I found this a calm and informative guide to environmental mold issues. It explained in an understandable way the scientific issues around mold such as what mold is, how it can be a health hazard, and more importantly how mold is not some sort of invisible killer, but something that requires certain conditions to become a problem.

5 out of 5 stars Tips on prevention are particularly well done.......2005-05-12

Mold growth is a wide-ranging problem only recently receiving recognition in the process: turn to the The Mold Survival Guide For Your Home And For Your Health for significantly more depth and advice than any ordinary newspaper article could offer. Indoor air quality professional teams join a writing specialist to describe different types of molds and how to eradicate them while maintaining health. Tips on prevention are particularly well done.

5 out of 5 stars The Mold Survival Guide.......2004-09-08

This book written by long time professional home inspector Jeff May and his writer spouse Connie is a good introduction to mold problems in buildings, particularly homes. It combines an excellent narrative writing style, and unusual for a book that should appeal to many lay readers, a strong scientific understanding of mold, its growth requirements, its effects on human health, its detection in indoor spaces and ultimately its control. Jeff who I have known for over 20 years brings to this book many years (and of course many investigated buildings) of real-world experience with the scientific understanding to match. That is a rare combination. The book is a good read for the lay individual concerned about mold, the parent with a child with asthma, chronic sinusitis, or chronic non-seasonal allergy. It is also a good read for mold professionals of limited experience and those planning to enter the profession.

5 out of 5 stars Home Buyer with Allergies.......2004-07-12

I think everyone who has a mold allergy should read this book. There is so much misinformation about this subject. Armed with this knowledge, I now know when home inspectors, realtors etc. are telling the truth. I also know what level of moisture and water damage in a basement that I'm willing to tolerate. Now I can buy a home with confidence that I won't be surprised when I move in. I feel much better able to identify moisture problems as well as assess whether the problems are repairable. The book also connects the home owner with so many resources for testing, remediation etc. I'm not a scientist, but I was able to get the message because there are so many pictures in the book. You will know what you are looking for after reading it.

    4 out of 5 stars foodie1.......2006-03-04

An excellent cookbook. Well researched and the recipes all work. I especially enjoyed that there were recipes that are usually hard to find such as Horchata and Diablo Shrimp. I would have given it 5 stars but I think that some pictures of the food would have helped. I guess we get spoiled in today's world by various cookbooks and magazines that inspire us to try a recipe because it looks so delicious in a photo. I would recommend it based on the quality of the recipes though.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic, expansive and informative.......2005-01-31

For the last 15 years, I had been looking to recreate several of the wonderful Mexican dishes I ate while living in Tucson, Arizona for 6 years. It was not until I found The Border Cookbook that I was able to accomplish this task! The authors have made it very easy to cook the wonderful flavors that I have been missing all of these years. The descriptions of the history of the dishes and the detailed explanations of how to cook each recipe make this cookbook one of my favorites!

5 out of 5 stars Time-consuming recipes that are well worth the effort.......2004-05-31

I purchased this book about three years ago and believe it to be the best cookbook I've seen covering Mexican and Southwestern Cuisine. The only disappointment was with the recipes being so good you would've liked to have seen some pictures. That being the only flaw, I would highly recommend it to anyone that has a fondness for border cooking. Try the Chicken Enchiladas Verda and the Arizona Enchiladas. They are time-consuming recipes that are well worth the effort.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST SW cookbook ever!.......2004-01-17

I live in a tiny town in southern Colorado and have LOTS of company. This cookbook has given me an arsenal of impressive and easy-to-make "border" dishes that give my guests an authentic taste of the Southwest. People always love the food, and I must have given a dozen copies of this cookbook as gifts.

    5 out of 5 stars lip-smacking good.......2003-10-31

The Jamisons include northern Mexican cuisine as well as Southwestern and concentrate on traditional home cooking. Organized by course, it includes breakfast (burritos, tamale hash with corn, eggs and cheese) and a cheese course (stuffed squash blossoms, crab nachos, enchiladas).

There's lots of stewed and braised meat dishes as well as barbecue, organ meats and game, many using inexpensive cuts tenderized with spices and long cooking. Fish dishes include roasted flounder fillets wrapped in banana leaf and grilled fish tacos. Tortilla dishes abound throughout the book but are listed at the beginning for easy access. This is a comprehensive book which could easily serve as the nucleus of a Southwestern cooking library.

Quilt making is a natural outlet for kids' innate creativity. Take children on a field trip to the fabric or quilt store and you'll be refreshed by their free-spirited approach to color and amazed by their fearlessness in the face of traditional quilting "rules." Just about any 9- to 14-year-old can turn out a stupendous quilt with some adult supervision and the terrific guidance of noted expert Alex Anderson's Kids Start Quilting. Stressing safety first, Anderson introduces kids to the rotary cutter, iron, and sewing machine, as well as the other essentials. She covers all the basics of quilt anatomy, explaining how to square up, cut, pin, stitch, and press the pieces, plus how to handle settings, borders, backing, batting, basting, binding, tying, and hand quilting. The seven nicely designed step-by-step quilt projects include log cabin, four-patch, saw tooth star, and sampler designs. A kids' quilt gallery features works by the six young quilters--both girls and boys--who collaborated on the book with Anderson, and quotes from the kids and photos of them at work on their quilts provide even more encouragement to other young quilters. --Amy Handy

I purchased this book for my 13yo niece; it was the best buy ever. It is easy to read & the projects are very easy to understand & complete.

      4 out of 5 stars Skimpy.......2004-09-08

I love Alex but the book is a little too skimpy with only five blocks to choose from.

I am also surprised at the lack of photos on hand quilting. Hand quilting really needs way more illustrations and not just on burying the knot! Even the section on hand tying lacks illustrations!! If you put it in the book, you should show us how it is done so we can see it. A book on the basics should include the basics!

It is still a good book, but after having both books by Barbara Eikmeier I can say it isn't the best book I have seen on the subject. A nice addition after you have the others.

5 out of 5 stars Great Teaching Tool.......2002-04-22

Alex Anderson is among the best in teaching quilting methods. This book is a great teaching tool for children of all ages. Alex really explains each step in detail and I learned some new tricks myself. She stresses safety while working with children as well as self-expression through fabric choices. A great addition to any sewing library!

                Book Description

When the Japanese Imperial Forces invaded the Philippine Islands at the onset of World War II, they quickly rounded up Allied citizens on Luzon and imprisoned them as enemy aliens. These captured civilians were treated inhumanely from the start, and news of the atrocities committed by the enemy soon spread to the more remote islands to the south. Hearing this, many of the expatriates living there refused to surrender as their islands were occupied.

Fugitives: Evading and Escaping the Japanese, based on the memoir of Jordan A. Hamner, tells the true story of a young civilian mining engineer trapped on the islands during the Japanese invasion. Instead of surrendering, he and two American co-workers volunteered their services to the Allied armed forces engaged in the futile effort to stave off the enemy onslaught. When the overwhelmed defenders surrendered to the invaders, the three men fled farther into the disease-ridden mountainous jungle. After nearly a year of nomadic wandering, they found a derelict, twenty-one foot long lifeboat in a secluded coastal bay. Hoping to sail to freedom in Australia, the trio converted the craft into a sailboat, and called it the “Or Else.” They would make it to Australia—or else.

With only a National Geographic magazine map of the Malacca Islands for navigation, Hamner, his two compatriots, and two Filipino crewmen sailed their unseaworthy craft fifteen hundred nautical miles over seas controlled by the Japanese navy, touching land only briefly to replenish meager rations or evade enemy vessels. After thirty perilous days at sea, marked by nearly disastrous encounters with hostile islanders, imminent starvation, and tropical storms, the desperate fugitives reached the welcome shores of Australia.

I think this book did a pretty good job at teaching the complete beginner, me, about the basics of investing with stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. He favors stocks over bonds in the long term, and rightly so. He clearly demonstrates that bonds simply can't handle inflation the way stocks can. However, some bonds do make sense for certain people, like older folks near retirement. Even then, he suggests using say, 25% stocks to protect older folks from inflation. But for young kids like me (20 yrs old), long-term, diversified no load stock mutual funds seems to be the way to go. He shows one table in his book showing the average return of different stock and bond combinations through 1947 to 1989. The table demonstrates that a porfolio with 100% stocks and 0% bonds has the largest average return. He also discusses numerous tax deferral programs such as various IRA accounts, including Roth IRAs. I could go on and on about all the things I learned in this book. I would recommend this book to anyone new to investing.

The eighteen chapters in the book provide a window into the complexity of designing and managing collaborative research efforts in organizations . . . and present an approach that is worth reading about, reflecting upon, and exploring further. At Volvo Cars, this collaboration has been an added value to our practice."

Collaborative Research in Organizations: Foundations for Learning, Change, and Theoretical Development leverages and sustains the role of management research while increasing the theoretical development of complex organizational and management issues. The true partnership ideal and emergent inquiry process make collaborative research complex and difficult to organize, lead, and manage. This book addresses these needs by revisiting traditional research ideals.

Collaborative Research in Organizations is organized in four sections. Part I, Framing the Challenge, provides grounding in the historical context, the emergent need, and the challenges of working in the borderland between academy and industry. Part II, Lenses and Mechanisms, presents a range of collaborative research approaches, concepts, frameworks, and mechanisms, positioning collaborative research as something other than one of many qualitative approaches. Part III, Illustrations, are intended to provide specific examples of collaborative research projects in a variety of companies and industries that show how collaborative research is realized. Most of the illustrations are based on collaborations between FENIX Program researchers at the Stockholm School of Economics and Chalmers University of Technology and leading Swedish organizations leveraging the Scandinavia tradition of boundary-spanning learning endeavours. Part IV, Lessons, highlights the common denominators between the different studies, addresses some of the critiques of collaborative research, and identifies critical challenges for future inquiry.

                      Book Description

MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTING 2/e is written for the future user of accounting information. While the preparation of accounting information is an important skill, this text focuses on the analysis of the information generated by the accounting system for both planning and control decisions. For this reason, business majors and current and future managers will benefit greatly from the material presented. Accounting majors will also gain a better understanding of how accounting information is used for effective planning and control within all types of organizations.

MANAGEMENT ACCOUNTING 2/e has a conceptual framework that focuses on using accounting information to make decisions that are reinforced through the use of numerical examples. Most textbooks cover concepts in isolation providing only half of the picture- McWatters gives students the big picture of real-world accounting by incorporating decision making in every chapter. The authors of this textbook firmly believe that students learn best when they can relate important concepts to the overall objective of management accounting: helping to achieve customer and organizational value through sound business decision-making.

This is the best alternative for those who want to understand what management accounting is about. Traditional books tend to focus on the decision making part (how to find some optimal solution for an accounting problem.). This book adds the control part: how to make a solution come true. The book integrates decision making and control. So often managers forget the control issues, this book explains why that happens, and what you can do.
The book makes you realize that much money can be earned in a consulting career. (This review refers to the 2nd, international edition.)

                      5 out of 5 stars I disagree: It's a GREAT book!.......2004-05-16

I disagree with the previous reviewer. I found the information very valid and not repetitive. Amazingly, although the text is dated 1996, it is absolutely applicable to 2005. In fact, it's nice to see that much of what the author predicted for the future has already come true...and I have no reason to believe that his other predictions won't come true eventually as well.

This book is oriented towards copywriters, whether they be self-employed, advertising agency employees, or simply businesspeople who want to write advertising for seniors. The author is a senior himself and the author of many, many texts on copywriting and advertising, so he knows his stuff on both counts.

4 out of 5 stars Not an easy read, but some good info regardless.......2000-07-03

There's some very valuable information in this book for those who market to the senior (55+) audience. Dozens of examples of advertisements geared towards seniors help to illustrate Mr. Lewis' points.

However, the organization of this book leaves something to be desired. It jumps from topic to topic, and points are repeated (often verbatim) throughout the book as if the author simply forgot he had already addressed that topic.

But I did walk away from this book with plenty of ideas I'll put into practice. If you do any direct marketing to seniors, you'll surely get at least a few new ideas from Silver Linings.

This is an excellent reference for both the home owner and the shoreline manager. I used this book to aquaint myself with the shoreline of Whatcom County, and the littoral drift cells, as well as the coastal hazard areas. The book gives great descriptions of the shorelines on Puget Sound, and the different issues that face current or future home owners.

This book explains the problems associated with development along the sound, and what future problems to expect if you do live on the water. I recommend this if you are looking for a home on Puget Sound, or already have one.

5 out of 5 stars COME HOME, LOVE DAD smiles with love.......2001-01-24

Not all families are disfunctional. In fact, Shelly Reuben proves this beyond a shadow of a doubt. What a wonderful portrait of a loving father as told through her eyes and through his own letters. Reuben paints a picture in words that creates images of a real father. One who lives in a houseful of love, surrounded by his five children, tolerant and loving wife, friends and crazy relatives. One readily sees why Reuben has selected words as her vocation. Her father created, plagerized, quoted and paraphrased the thought provoking guidence and evocative sentiments with which he communicated to his offspring. Written on stationary, or on the back of landlord-tenant court documents, these jewels of creative writing tell of a romantic soul. He is clearly adored, not for his incredible inventions or tenacity regarding real estate investments, but for his character, strength, concern and consideration. Those of us who can relate have surely had fathers of similar noble quality. Those who cannot fathom the beautiful relationships between father and child have missed an incredible experience. Reach back into childhood, read this and enjoy the experience.

5 out of 5 stars Come Home, Love Dad review.......2000-11-30

If you want to read something that makes you feel good about life, read Shelly Reuben's book, Come Home Love Dad. With so many books flooding the market about serial killers and political espionage it's a pleasure to read something about an actual person that really touches you. Miss Reuben expertly uses narration as well as actual letters written by her father to gradually reveal his personality to the reader. I came to know a man who was an inventor, a landlord, and a salesman, but first and foremost - a father.
