Informative, but error prone.......2005-07-21

A strongly analyzed subject, the author provides a great deal of information aimed at the reader who is approaching Napoleon for the first time. Included are many lovely illustrations, copies of paintings depicting scenes of famous incidents and family portraits.
However, several errors exist which weaken the text. A number of errors in translation leave the reader stumbling over awkward, grammatically-incorrect sentences. Several phrases are also translated literally from the French without explanation, often leaving the reader to guess at their meaning. The author is also confused as to who he is writing to, is it the neophyte or the scholar? The result is a series of simplistic depictions interspersed with complicated pieces of information which leave the average reader, with no indepth knowledge of the post-revolutionary government or early 19th century French history, at a loss. At the close of the book are eight pages of documents, in the original French, unsupported with any translation or explanation. Did the translator run out of time, or is one to assume that all English readers will understand written French? Lastly, the author, though trying to be objective, is obviously biased in Napoleon's favour and leaves the reader wondering just how accurate is his portrayal.

Just another picture book.......2001-10-02

This is probably a nice introductory read into the Napoleonic legend. It features some nice pictures done in the DK style. However, some of the contents appear to be targetted at a more mature readership such as reproductions of French archival texts. I tk that this book is unclear as to the kind of readership to target.

Excellent history !.......2000-06-05

In this book,Jean Tulard,a distinguished historian of the napoleonic empire with many other books on the subject,gives us a very penetrating and elucidative view of Napoleon's political position inside France. Most english and american historians center their attention on Napoleon's military and foreign achivements,forgetting the internal,domestic french political picture which is vital to the understanding of the whole saga.Reading this book you begin to understand the real weakness of the napoleonic empire and how Napoleon,inflated by his successes,forgot why he was put into power in the first place. I strongly recomend this book,especialy to people who focus too much on Napoleon the general and conqueror,for after all,the first and most important people Napoleon had to subdue were the french.

I loved this book. I have always been interested in dolphins and was intrigued to learn how they live. Their connection with humans seems so close, like they are as interested in learning about us as we are about them. This woman's story of her time with the dolphins made me wish I was there too. I read the book a couple of years ago and still think about it. Some of her stories still make me laugh when I think of them. A fascinating story!

I'm passionate about dolphins, and I couldn't get through the book. I felt as if the author didn't like dolphins, and didn't really respect them. I hate to be saying this about a book that seemed at first glance so wonderful, but I didn't feel as if the book protrayed positive feelings. I just feel as if the author doesn't like dolphins, and I think that a book that is written in a way that might seem emotional, but doesn't portray true feelings or a love for the creatures that are said to be loved. If the tone is to be set in one way, the words used should reflect that tone.

Amazing.......2003-05-03

Ever since I was a little girl, I've always been fascinated by dolphins. My career goal is to work with dolphins, in any shape or form, but particularly in the research aspect. I picked up this book while browsing the library one day and fell completly in love with it. It definitely reconfirmed my dream of working with these wonderful creatures, but I also learned a lot about their behaviors and personalities. It also shows that dolphins are not all the same--they actually have unique personality traits. I was so awed by this book that I gave in and decided to buy it--I should receive it in a couple days so I'm looking forward to reading it until it is worn out!! I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who is curious about dolphins. Happy reading!

I had great hope -- sleep !!!!!!

But it is just yet another book advocating abuse of the child for the ease of the parent.

Yes, I want sleep. NO I will not sacfice my baby's secure attachment to me, and faith in me and the world to get it.

crying it out is abuse pure and simply.

Don't waest your time and money -- if you think this is how to raise a child, do yourfelf and the child a favor and giv the child to someone who will care.

Could work I suppose.......2006-02-25

This book is easy to read & sympathetic but it didn't work for me. Staying with my baby while he was supposed to self-soothe (as recommended) did not help him or reassure him in any way. He cried continually, stopping for no more than 2 mins at a time. It worked better for me to leave him, returning every 10 - 15 mins for very brief periods of reassurance. He still cried but less & less each day. I think there are babies for whom the stay-with-them style could work, but not all, and alas, not mine.

Another cry it out to sleep book.......2005-09-08

I thought I'd find more logical techniques for sleep from Dr Brazelton since I enjoy all his other books, but this book just follows the old-school cry it out method. I did find many non-crying solutions in a newer book called the No Cry Sleep Solution.

This is a great little book - short, easy to use, not overwhelming. Yet I've found all the answers to my questions in it, simply and clearly explained. I especially like the section with all the suggestions on how to handle problems. I'm done with struggling over bedtime with my 3 year old. This book has shown me what to do and given me the confidence to do it.

This is the one.......2004-03-16

There are so many books out there now for parents, especially about sleep. I never would have known which one to pick -who has time for more than one?- if one of my co-workers hadn't told me to check out the Brazelton Way. Well, she was right. This book is only about a hundred pages long, it fits in your pocket, and it's written so clearly you can zip right through it. I love my kids, but I'd rather be with them than spending a lot of time reading about them. I know many parents who feel the same way, especially single parents like me. It's tough raising a child alone, especially for a guy, because everyone is second guessing you and making you feel like you're never going to figure out how to take care of a kid. These little books, though, have really made me feel like I know what I'm doing. I love the way they steer me back to trusting my own gut, and at the same time give me so much useful advice. I bought this sleep book because my four-year-old was waking up with nightmares every night. He was so scared of having another one that he started refusing to go to bed. I couldn't deal with that because I have to get my sleep too. But this book gave me a few simple tips and all I had to do was try them out a few times and my little boy settled down - no more nightmares.

This books is definitely the one. I highly recommend it to any parent who wants to be sure they're doing everything they can do to raise happy, healthy kids.

A lot of repetition of really obvious things. Really basic definitions of margins and profit. The book could have been reduced to 3 pages it would have been good enough. No real focus on restaurant business.
Might be an eye opener if you are 10 years old and were thinking of opening a restaurant. If you are serious about your project, you will not learn anything in this book. Useless...

Be aware...........2002-05-30

I've just read this book and felt that it was fairly helpful, especially if you have just been diagnosed and are looking for ways to minimize the nasty symptoms of crohn's.

I had one problem with it. I've had crohn's for eighteen years and am something of an expert. Every crohn's sufferer Iknow avoids too much fibre as it acts like glass to our poor inflamed guts. Dr Hunter at Addenbrookes recommends a low fat LOW FIBRE diet as treatment. Whilst pears, apples, cherries, mango, melons and pineapple may be fine, other fruits such as citrus and bananas may cause further problems.

With vegetables, spinach, carrots & sweet potato, should all be fine, but onions, tomatoes, potato skin, and really anything high in fibre should, I believe, be avoided. To ensure adequate nutrition, peel all vegetables, avoid fruit and vegetables with pips and seeds or remove carefully, or try eating in pureed form or as soups.

Finally, if you have very severe crohn's or have had it for any length of time, this may not be the book for you as it deals with the basics and implies that there is a successful treatment for all, which unfortunately, isn't always the case. If you are looking for reassurance and support after a few hard years of recurring disease, this may not help.

However, a good, varied book, written by one who actually has the disease for once.

Patronising and light on for real info.......2002-04-25

I found this book very patronising, just do what you are told and you will get better. Very light on for details of any type. I would recommend Saibil if you just want the mainstream medical info. If you want alternatives to use either with or without maintream medicine try Atkins Vitanutrient Solution (yes the diet guy) or Berkson's Healthy digestion the natural way. They both offer a wide diversity of alternative treatment

Disturbing and Disappointing.......2002-01-08

I found this book very disappointing. I have had Crohn's Disease for 17 years and have read all the books on Crohn's Disease. I found this book very disturbing because in many instances, Dr. Gomez claims that when the Crohn's patient "cleaned" up their life, they became well. This not only implies that it is somehow the patients fault for getting ill but also that they can control it. Unfortunately, the disease does not work like that. I feel sorry for the Crohn's patient who reads this book and thinks that all they have to do is take their medication live on the straight and narrow.

This book has complete information on the different types of medical treatments for Crohn's Disease. It was helpful to understand the technical side of available treatments,including side effects.

Covering the digestive system, signs and symptoms of Crohn's, types of tests and diagnosis, and medicinal and surgical treatment options, readers benefit from Gomez's explanation of digestion, the challenges of nutrition/absorption, and the many medicinal and surgical treatments.

As someone who was looking for an uplifting book with solutions, this book primarily about drugs and surgery disappointed me. One quote early on reads, "Getting the best out of life when you have this illness [Crohn's] means reengineering your whole lifestyle". There really must be a more positive way of saying this! Barely fifteen pages are dedicated to the root cause that diet plays in inflammatory bowel disease. Gomez finally mentions the research of British professor Herman-Taylor but fails to mention the successes found by the case studies done by Elaine Gottschall, author of "Breaking The Vicious Cycle: Intestinal Health Through Diet". My suggestion for future editions: show the reader some positive steps to take. For example, "through a regimen for remission, personal introspection, professional medical assistance, and the inclusion of exercise, support, and whole-body awareness, the patient can join a growing community of people achieving positive results."

The best FS book I've read.......2007-08-03

I wasted a lot of money on figure skating books prior to buying this one. This book includes everything you need to know if you are a skating parent or are new to figure skating. A lot of books either speak to you as though you are an idiot or they are too advanced. This book is just right and packs EVERYTHING you could ever want to know about FS into an easy-to-read and enjoyable format. Buy this one first, you won't need to waste your money on other books.

This book was not only extremely informative but it was written with a fun, light tone that made reading enjoyable. Everything was very user friendly and never, at any given time, was I slightly confused or bored. Great book for skaters (because secrets are revealed) and non-skaters (who always wondered about the names of things, how certain moves are done, etc.).

Dummies?.......2006-02-15

The title might just as well be "Ice skating for aspiring professionals." In any case, a wonderful book about skating, well written and clear. I saw the chart on the Axel and thought, "Oh! It's just a waltz jump with a full turn at the end. Wow! I can do that!" Fortunately, I haven't attempted that yet. I'd have to be a dummy to try. Knees are nice. (BTW I'm well over 13 y.o.)

Good reading, although the judging system has changed.......2004-08-16

This is a great book for fans of the sport, but especially those armchair fans who know nothing about the elements but want to appreciate the finer points of this lovely sport. An explanation of the jumps and spins, plus how a program is put together and an overview of the rules, make this an entertaining and useful tool.

I am a skater my self and This book has helped me to lear how to do my jumps and spins better.If you like skating and want to lear how to skate, or if you are just starting I would recommed theis book.It tells you how to chose the righ skate for you and It tells you how to do jump and spins.Its a verry good book all aobut skating from some one who has been skating their hole life.

Very fun "scrap book" from figure skating's greatest! Kristi shares her life from childhood to present. What I really like is how she talks of her Japanese heritage. Very recommended.

Okay, I know "Yummy-guchi" doesn't make much sense, but Kristi Yamaguchi sure is yummy!

She's a great skater, great human being, and totally cute. This book about her is okay, but it should be a LOT longer with more pics of her. (200 pages of pictures would be good.)

I Got This Book As A Gift...........2001-08-08

...and for the most part, although it's geared towards a younger audience, it's a great book to have if you are a big fan of Kristi Yamaguchi, mostly for the photos it includes. There are several photos of Kristi in Albertville, both on the podium and standing with her medal after the ceremony that I've not seen in any other book and that brought back great memories of watching it live all those years ago. One of the more interesting parts of this book is that it was written before Kristi decided to turn pro, and talks about her plans for Lillehammer in 1994 (how great would that have been if it had been true?). Some of the photos are incorrectly captioned, and the book doesn't really reveal any ground-breaking information about Kristi or her life that hasn't already been covered in other books, but I recommend it for the photos. If you are a BIG Kristi fan, regardless of your age, this book will fit nicely into your collection. Otherwise, for a better book on Kristi and skating in general, check out her "Figure Skating for Dummies".
