Bill Hayes does a wonderful job of exploring our concepts of blood and sharing his experiences. I feel this book should be required reading for phlebotomists - I am one and found the book on my own and loved it!

With Emphasis on the Personal.......2006-11-28

Rarely have I encountered so unflinchingly honest a book. Mr. Hayes has an exceptionally complex relationship with blood; his partner of fourteen years is HIV positive while Mr. Hayes remains HIV free. Therefore, the book falls squarely into its own unique category--it is a journal of discoveries both personal and scientific. Its power is found in the author's candor as he shares his journey of discovery.

The personal dimension of this book is surprisingly vast. Though it does treat the science to the degree one would expect, the scientific and historical discussion is but the lesser portion. The true context lies in the author's expressed need to know what blood is all about and his discovery of how blood-related knowledge has shaped his life. The intensely personal nature of the work gives a depth to the discussion not present in the expected general science genre.

Though the author's frank treatment of his sexual orientation and personal history were startling, it can safely be said that Five Quarts is much more than a memoir and certainly more than the typical general science/history offering. Five Quarts was truly a rare and welcome find.

We could be corny and tout this as the kind of book you'll sink your teeth into, but that seems so bloody obvious. Instead we'll say that Five Quarts is a damn good read. Author Bill Hayes uses his HIV-positive status to springboard into a pulsating exploration --- as fascinating as it is frightening, as humorous as it is harrowing --- of the cultural, historical, spiritual and medical myths, misconceptions and marvels of blood. From the legend of Dracula to the scared saga of the Eucharist, from a heart-warming bedside visit with a woman suffering from hemophilia to a look inside a blood bank ... there's lots of interesting and informative on this plate(let).

Author Hayes mixes science, philosophy and a lot of personal intimacy in this interesting book on blood. A strange subject (though not the strangest around--a recent bestseller is about cadavers.) We have five quarts of the red stuff--hence the title.

The book starts with Bill getting a cut. But then we go on a journey about hemophila and history (the royal house of Great Britain) and we learn about bloodletting, blood banks, and ultimately the AIDS epidemic.

While I would prefer more science and less personal information in a treatise on a scientific subject, that's just me (I studied biology and immunology for quite some years.) But for a non-science-steeped reader, this is a fascinating look at the stuff of life. Recommended, though not for the squeamish.

Someone bought this book for me from my yoga class and I thought I would pick up a few new tips. It was okay nothing to write home about- maybe good for someone who doesn't know how to exercise. There are better books out there.

While no book could replace hands on instruction, this book comes close. This is the book that got me moving again after years of struggle with chronic back pain. Rather than a "one size fits all" approach, the book encourages one to review the evidence of your body and carefully approach the problem. I wonder where I would be if I hadn't run into this book a few years ago. Try it, it may save your back.

Great guide!.......2004-02-17

Very complete book with daily routines in the back. The description of exercises is extremely thorough. Much more complete than many other books out there. I have been through some rough times with my back and shoulders, and have searched widely for guidance to help me take care of myself - this one is a keeper. Doctors and Chiropractors are wonderful - but the ultimate responsibility is ours.

I had the pleasure of training with Kit Laughlin and other Posture and Flexibility instructors. Prior to learning Kit's approach I often experienced muscle tension in my neck, shoulders and back. Starting with the very first lesson, I learned specific stretches which eliminate tension in these muscle groups.

In Kit's first book, `Overcome Neck and Back Pain', he introduces a self-service approach to relieve neck and back pain through improvement of whole body suppleness. He demonstrates stretches targeting not only muscles in the neck, shoulder and back, but also muscles in the pelvic area and legs which influence back pain, as the reader will learn. Specific back strengthening exercises are included to help the reader build up the muscle strength needed to maintain good posture and prevent back pain.

Selected, compiled and edited by Laura Chester, the extracts and quotations comprising the text of "Eros & Equus: A Passion For The Horse" are beautifully enhanced throughout with the black and white photography of Donna Demari. The result is a terrific read for horse lovers of all ages. From the boisterous enthusiasm of the young colt to the stolid stoicism of the older horse, "Eros & Equus" offers a series of moving tributes, observations and commentaries that connect humans to their horses. From a band of wild girls racing their horses through a river, to an elder gentleman riding his prized stallion, to a nude woman swept into the saddle of a bandit, to a drunken father protecting his daughter's blind horse from the gun, each exquisite piece and their accompanying photographic images simply sweep the reader along from first page to last. "Eros & Equus" is a dramatically recommended addition to personal and community collections on Pets/Wildlife in general, and the horse in particular.
