Physics turned weird recently--really weird. That doesn't necessarily mean that modern physicists are weird, though, does it? Well, yes and no, says science writer Richard P. Brennan, whose book Heisenberg Probably Slept Here chronicles the lives of seven great scientists of the 20th century--Einstein, Planck, Rutherford, Bohr, Heisenberg, Feynman, and Gell-Mann--as well as their spiritual father, Isaac Newton. Fascinating and funny, each biographical sketch illuminates the man, his surroundings, and his achievements with unusual clarity.

Writing about the enormous driving force engendered in physics by World War II, with scientists on both sides striving to advance their knowledge far enough to win a terrible war, Brennan shows us the delicate contingencies that led to our current level of understanding. What if the Nazis hadn't rejected "Jewish science"? What if the Allies had assassinated Heisenberg? More generally, he tells us stories of men working like maniacs to answer some of the hardest, most basic questions about our universe ever devised, only to find more questions for the next century to ponder. We may hope that a new generation will be inspired by these stories to take weird 20th-century science much further; perhaps some day quantum mechanics will seem more quaint than abstruse. --Rob Lightner

4 out of 5 stars Good bibliographies, not so good explanations.......2006-04-18

This book is really helpful for several reasons. If you are looking for a good story and you enjoy science, then this book is perfect. In addition, the stories are not too long, so those to tend to hyper focus will be able to take a break. This book tells of the often humorous lives of scientific legends. It shows the human behind these legends. For example, these physicists did stupid things in college, like take 6 aspirin and three cokes just to prove they could. They also had marital problems and arguments with their friends. After reading this, these physicists seem more like everyday people. (Granted, most fathers don't read bedtime stories from the encyclopedia.) Over all, this is a good book because it is about real people with real lives.
Another good reason for reading this book is for research on these physicists and their theories. There is plenty of information on their lives and their work for research projects, and the book is very understandable. If you are simply looking to gain a simple understanding of their theories, this book is a good source. However, if you are looking to have an in depth debate on the theories or do serious research, I would not recommend it. The author, while explaining the theories, has a tendency to contradict himself a little. He seems to understand the general concept of the theories, however, upon closer observation, he doesn't make much sense. For example, when he says that scientists "cannot detect" particles in motion and then, just two lines later, says that their calculations about them are accurate, something seems to be wrong with his explanation. This is a great book if you want a good story or a simple overview of the theories; however, if you are looking for "accuracy" then you probably need to refer to the physicists' actual papers on their theories.

4 out of 5 stars High school physics on steroids.......2001-07-22

A lot of the material was similar to what I did in high school physics...but excellent presentation combined with insights into the lives of the phycisists made this a much more interesting text.

    5 out of 5 stars Heisenberg slept?!.......2001-06-19

First of all, the subtitle of this book, "The Lives, Times, and Ideas of the Great Physicists of the 20th Century," is a bit inaccurate. Among the 8 physicists depicted in Brennan's mini-biography is Sir Isaac Newton; obviously not a denizen of the 20th century. Granted, Newton had more influence on the present epoch of physics than anyone else up until the time of Einstein, so his presence in this work is not inappropriate. It's just that he's not a 20th century physicist.

On the other hand, a startling omission is Erwin Scroedinger. It is understood that one's selection of who's in & who's out can never please everyone in these types of books. However, I can't imagine someone assembling a roster of 20th century physicists without including the venerable Schroedinger. Just my opinion.

The content of the personages Brennan does write about is quite remarkable. Brennan does a reputable job of describing the major motifs of different biographical epochs of each physicist, then mixing in some nice anectdotes for good measure. He also does not get carried away & deify the scientists to make them look infallible. Rather, Brennan fairly integrates their faults into his text. As a bonus, there is also a brief synopsis of the history of Pre-Newtonian physics.

The most informative pages are those devoted to Heisenberg. I had always wanted to believe the stories about how he tried to sabatoge the Nazi bomb effort from the inside. Unfortunately, referencing British documents which were de-classified in 1992, Brennan nullifies those arguments as nothing but wishful thinking and ad-hoc propoganda engendered by H himself.

I would highly recommend this book as a prelude for those who wish to study the lives of these great physicists more deeply. As it is a quick read, it is an equally ideal book for physicists who have only a marginal interest in the great lives of their predecessors.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Well Written.......2000-08-04

I thouroughly enjoyed this book for several reasons. Richard Brennan does a remarkable job of explaining each physicists' work in a manner a layperson can understand, but still involved enough that the reader appreciates the significance of each discovery. Brennan also manages to capture the character and personality of each physicist with relatively a short biography. He has also structured the book so that the implication of each of the subjects' work on his successors is clear. In short, I found the physicists' personal stories compelling and the science fascinating.

5 out of 5 stars The book had exquisite view of those great scientists.......2000-07-14

When I read the book at first time, I was attracted to the stories. They are not only an interesting narrative but also provide the correct attitude of life and research of science for us. When I finished reading the book, I was deeply affected by the stories. I introduced the book to my friends, and I stilly like reading the book now.

5 out of 5 stars Informative and empathetic.......2007-05-12

This book gives the reader a rundown of what is currently known about Lyme and what is currently available in testing and treatment. This is, of course, as it should be, but all the more so in a medical culture where doctors know little and explain less. Lyme is one of the those diseases that is quite difficult to diagnose, and our American doctors are not exactly skilled diagnosticians. Worse, those of us who suffer from diseases that are not seen by the average medico every day may well have gotten blank stares or belligerent scoldings from Dr. Crock, and walked away with nothing more than another charge to the insurance company (if we have one). Denise Lang is herself afflicted with Lyme, and knows all the problems we can have with doctors, and deals with them head on. But fear not - her co-author, Kenneth Liegner, is an MD and has a full grip on the scientific facts and the ability to explain those to laypersons. So we get the medicine as well as the reality of dealing with it.

I would give this book a 5 if it had information for men. I agree with an earlier reviewer about that point. But the book is very informative and the best book out there for individuals with Lyme. I wish I had read it sooner.

4 out of 5 stars Coping with Lyme Disease, Third Edition by Denise Lang.......2004-05-29

I think this book was very well thought out. It has so much information packed in the pages that I am reading it a second time. The glossary would be great for a new lymie researcher. It explores all aspects including diagnosis, testing, political views, insurance problem and so much more. The Support Groups, Organizations and Lyme Newsletter information is a bit out of date. But since "Education Is Your Best Defense" you will be able to track down almost anything that you may need.

La Porte des Indes Cookbook is one of my favorite cookbooks and I have scores of Indian cookbooks, as I'm sort of a gourmet chef. I wrote a cooking column for a sailing magazine for a couple years and one of my favorite articles was my "Two Ways to Tandoori" which you can read in one of my "Amazon So You'd Like to Guides," if you want. Tandoori chicken is just delicious. Anyway, while I was making the guide, I listed fifty cookbooks from my collection. I have more. I know, I know, one would think a couple books would be enough, but it's sort of an obsession with me, making food taste great and I just love to see how others have done it.

While I was doing the guide, I pulled out all my Indian Cookbooks, had them all stacked around me. Then I decided to pull out all the ones I didn't think I could live without. It came to an even dozen and La Porte des Indes Cookbook was one of the books. The recipes are just divine. I've never been to India, been a lot of places, but never there. Delhi, Bombay, Ganges, names that just ring with adventure. I imagine I'm there every time I cook up something Indian. I can feel the smells as they wrap their delicious flavors all around the kitchen, or galley, if I'm cooking on board the sailboat my husband Dub and I live on half the year. You won't go wrong with this book. Check it out. Check out my other eleven too. Cook up something from India tonight, taste the adventure.

Imagine a twist on traditional Indian faire, namely one with a resounding French influence. I was so taken by the outstanding cuisine of this London restaurant that describes itself as "Indian Cuisine with a Difference" I pined for their cookbook. My five year wait is over. Is it ever impressive!

I had never dreamed that I could create credible tandoori grilled salmon or prawns on my own outdoor grill at home by following the recipes described in the cookbook. The grilled prawns are such an absolute knock out that unsuspecting dinner guests who instinctively must reach for cocktail sauce find themselves instead reaching for yet another grilled prawn! The green fish curry made with monkfish, with its novel presentation, was another succulent dish expertly nailed.

Tadka Dal (tempered yellow lentils) and Yellow Lentil Soup are other dishes prepared that our guests readily savor. They also made delightful autumn themed additions to our table, what with the blend of yellows, reds and greens.

Mehermosh and Sherin Mody have compiled an exquisite work that is easy to follow and even includes recipes for a number of delectable chutneys and sauces that greatly complement certain foods. Many superb photographs visually accompany dozens of recipes. They sent me scurrying to my local Indian spice shop to round out my spice cabinet. And, I now keep on hand lots of fresh garlic!

Whether one's experience level with Indian cuisine is novice or sophisticated, one will find the cookbook easy to follow and informing. For me, it was well worth the wait. For my friends who cook, well, let's just say they have tasted their way into ordering their own copy of the La Porte des Indes Cookbook!

5 out of 5 stars A great book for the Value.......2005-02-24

Kudos for this ecologically correct book published in response to xeriscaping and the shift to using native plants and the reasons for using them in the landscape. Although exotic plants are arguably beautiful, this book opens your eyes to using native Floridian plants for landscaping.

First, these plants evolved in the central Florida area so are well adapted to the rigours of the climate- disease, watering, temperature requirements, water requirements, etc. These already adapted plants will not just look attractive, but will flourish in your landscape. Also, being native, the worry of introducing yet another exotic pest plant to the already endangered Florida ecosystem is negated. Thirdly these plants tend to be xeric-- drought resistant when established- a godsend for those waterwise and ecologically responsible gardeners.

As far as the book goes, the photographs are fair to excellent and many show what the plant appears..not just closeups, of say the flower, or a twig. For the most part one can picture what the plant will appear in the garden. The language used in the book is easy to understand for the beginner, yet technical enough for the avid gardener.

I love the conciseness of the description of each plant from its scientific name to its growth rate, landscape maintenance and other specific growth needs. There are also "Notes" which provide the gardener specifics, such as if a plant is toxic, or other specific characteristic, for example.

All in all, the reader of this book will be impressed by the information. If nothing more, it will open Floridians' eyes to the possibility of incorporating these neglected, but beautiful plants into their landscape. For the price, this book is a wonderful value. It is going in my "can't do without" collection in my library-- and you will find it indispensable, as well.

5 out of 5 stars The Right Book for Ecological Landscaping.......2000-04-05

This book is an excellent source of information about native Florida plants that can be used in landscaping projects. These plants grow well in Florida without the large amounts of care and water required by many exotics. They also provide habitat for native animals and butterflies. For each plant described in the book the authors give both the common and botanical name. They also provide a color photo, a written description, mature size, growth rate, water, soil & light requirements, salt tolerance and propagation tips for each plant. Although some of the plants are hard to find, they also provide sources to help locate nurseries that carry native plants. This book is a must for anyone that wants to help the environment, reduce their use of water, fertilizer and pesticides on their lawns and save money in the process!

The Magic Years is almost 40 years old, yet this book still offers a wonderful way of looking at how kids think, and why they act the way they do based on their cognitive and emotional abilities. The Magic Years refers to the psychological sense of discovery and magical power a young child feels. This book is used in many child development courses, but is a good read for anybody wanting to understand the young child's mind as he grows, acquires knowledge, and moves into more logical thought patterns. Selma Fraiberg's respect for children radiates from the pages. Take a little bit of time with this book; as Fraiberg says, "It is the quality of our understanding ... that provides us with the right method at critical moments."

              Book Description

To a small child, the world is an exciting but sometimes frightening and unstable place. In The Magic Years, Selma Fraiberg takes the reader into the mind of the child, showing how he confronts the world and learns to cope with it. With great warmth and perception, she discusses the problems at each stage of development and reveals the qualities -- above all, the quality of understanding -- that can provide the right answer at critical moments.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth reading.......2007-10-13

Of the twenty or so books on parenting I read after our first daughter was born, I recommend this one to friends most often. Based on research, well written and with almost no redundant material, this book helped me understand psychological development of our child very much. Two more books I would readily recommend are Haim G Ginott's Between Parent and Child and Kathy Hirsh-Pasek's Einstein Never Used Flash Cards.

4 out of 5 stars Very technical. Not for the lay person...like me........2007-08-01

This is a very well respected manuscript, but if you are a parent looking for answers, this is probably not your book. Its written for other professionals. It's pretty dry and hard to read. I was looking for something geared a little more towards parents trying to solve the every day problems we face raising our children. But this is more of an "industry" book and reads somewhat like a textbook.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have Resource for Parents Interested in their Baby's and Young Child's Emotional and Mental Development.......2007-07-28

I first read this book 28 years ago when my daughter was born. I didn't remember the whole name nor the author, but I had read it several times, and it made such a lasting impression on me that I did remember the words "The Magic Years". I was very glad to see it's still in print. Now I'm going to send it to a niece who just had a baby. There are many books about the physical sequence of development in babies and toddlers and how to enhance each stage of development but none addresses their mental and social development and needs as completely as this book does. Unfortunately for babies and young children, adults tend to view their mental and social development from an adult's perspective. This can result in a lot of misinterpretations and misunderstandings regarding a baby's or young child's behavior. What I remember most about this book is that unlike any other book it enabled me to see the world from a baby's and very young child's point of view. It vividly describes what adjusting to and living in our world is like for babies amd young children and enables parents to see the world from their perspective. The result is parents who understand their baby's and young child's behavior and who can then react to and influence it positively instead of negatively. The book is not for those who want an easy to read, quick, month by month synopsis of their baby's development. But for the parents who want a thorough understanding of their baby's or young child's mental & social development and needs and who want to do their best to meet these needs, it's a resource unlike any other: a resource I've remembered for 28 years and one I would highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars fascinating, enlightening, highly recommended.......2007-07-21

This book is excellent. It was given to me by my shrink, and I have often thought of how grateful I am for that. I have raised an older foster child, but upon the arrival of a baby, discovered new parental challenges for which I wished to be well prepared. I found this book to be extremely enlightening as to the way that infants and young children view their world and the healthy way a parent can respond to them. It was easy to see where one can misinterpret a child's behavior and make mistakes that will adversely affect the parent-child relationship and the child's emotional development, and set the stage for lifelong conflicts plus emotional inbalance. I am VERY glad I read this book and have bought many copies for friends and even strangers.
I'd like to comment that I always offer this with my gift: There are a few pages right at the beginning that are somewhat technical, delving into biochemistry and such, and that might scare some readers off. With this minor exception, the book is a very enjoyable read with humorous examples and descriptions.
In addition, I am a buddhist, and view part of my life's work as forgetting my ego, However, as Dr. Fraiberg explains, the infant is born absolutely self-centered, and her book is invaluable in setting the child up to be emotionally healthy enough to become autonomous and objective, which in turn will allow it to develop compassion and generosity to others.
              Very, very highly recommended.
P.S. I am an electrician, not an expert in the field of child development.

1 out of 5 stars THE MAGIC YEARS.......2007-06-13

Although this book was referred to us by our pediatrician I found it very difficult to actually get through. It rambles on and on not....not an easy read which makes it hard to ascertain any information.
I would not recommend this book.

Shiki Masaoka was one of those stars that burned brightly, and burned out fast. Sick for most of his life, Masaoka became one of Japan's most prominent poets at the turn of the century, and his influence on tanka and haiku remains to this day. "Songs From a Bamboo Village" not only displays some of his poetry, but offers insights into his life and work.

Translators Sanford Goldstein and Seishi Shinoda (both professors) open the book with a detailed biography of Shiki -- a passionate poet, whose strong artistic mother encouraged his education. He wasn't just a poet, but also a columnist who used his "A Drop of Chinese Ink" to let his thoughts be known, whether they were thoughts on late 19th-century Japanese poetry, or a comic letter from guardian deity Jizu.

But his ill health both destroyed him and became one source of his inspiration; but it couldn't hold back his determination to revitalize Japanese poetry until his death. Even when he was dying, his sister helped him write. At the end of the book, the translators also offer several pages of translation notes, which offer insights into Masaoka's poetry, the times in which his lived, and the reflections of his life in his work.

Then we are shown some of Masaoka's beautiful tanka poetry -- some is focused on nature, some on emotion, and some are just reflections on little bits of life, such as the tanka that comments on which persimmons are the sweetest. Some even have a humorous bent, such as "Vowing not to return/without performing my duty/I head for the front/my portable brush and ink case/stashed swordlike in my belt!"

Masaoka's writing is minimalistic at times, though often he reflected on the color of a flower or the contents of a bag. However, his poetry serves as an excellent window into his thoughts, whether they were happy, sad, or merely reflections of his own failing body. "This iris flowers/have come out/and before my eyes/is passing/the last spring I will see," he wrote at one point.

More than a mere collection of poetry, "Songs From A Bamboo Village" displays the talents and life of a rare man, whose passion for his art and life were sadly cut short. Beautiful and sad.

Here are graceful and timeless poems by one of Japan's greatest modern writers, rendered by a master translator. Masaoka Shiki (1867--1902) is credited with modernizing Japan's two traditional verse forms, haiku and tanka. Born at a time of social and cultural change in Japan, Shiki welcomed the new influences from the West and responded to them by reinvigorating the native haiku and tanka forms. He freed them from outdated conventions, made them viable for artistic expression in modern Japan, and paved the way for the haiku to become one of his nation's most influential cultural exports.

Burton Watson's excellent introduction explores the course of Shiki's life: his poverty-stricken childhood, his early love for literature, his education, and his work as a haiku editor for the newspaper Nippon, and as a correspondent during the Sino-Japanese war. Watson details Shiki's long struggle with tuberculosis and its poignant expression in his poetry. Confined to bed for months before his death, Shiki continued to devote his energies to literary pursuits: writing poems and critical essays, and joining with friends and followers who gathered in his sickroom to discuss literature. He died a few weeks before his thirty-fifth birthday. These poems -- more than a hundred haiku, several tanka, and three kanshi -- are arranged chronologically within each genre, revealing the development of Shiki's art and the seamless way in which he wove his life and illness into his poetry.

Now available to today's readers in an enhanced new edition with photographs, this acclaimed work offers a complete portrait of the life and the far-reaching influence of the man many Japanese critics refer to as "the father of modern haiku." Beichman puts Shiki's brief, energetic life, his personality, and his fertile work--including haiku, tanka, and diaries--into fascinating context. As the earliest to write haiku that were modern in both theme and subject, Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902) is a prominent figure in modern Japanese literature. Born one year before the Meiji Restoration, he was in many ways a transitional figure, with his writings standing midway between the pre-modern and modern periods and his character and life shaped by both. Janine Beichman takes care in this elucidating work not to overemphasize Shiki's popular image as a haiku poet, and informs readers about other important yet little-known aspects of Shiki's work. Includes translations acclaimed for their sensitivity, as well as understandable literary analysis.

This excellent book achieves a fine balance between literary biography and literary analysis, and between critical scholarship and literary sensibility. Actually, it's not so much a balance as an incredible fusion. Masaoka Shiki certainly deserves such treatment; he is a major figure in Japanese literature, and (as Beichman explains) a good deal of the credit for the fact that haiku and tanka are regarded as "poetry" and this poetry a type of "literature" at all goes to him and his efforts.

Each of the five chapters has a distinct focus. The first is a general biography contextualizing the chapters that follow. Masaoka is known as the father of modern haiku and as the haiku's reviver, and so chapter two focuses on this important facet of his literary career. However, Beichman convincingly argues that Masaoka saw his work on haiku only as part as a larger endeavor, and so the next chapters discuss his tanka poems, his prose essays, and his diaries (with an interesting comparison and contrast between his private diary and the diaries he crafted for publication).

The analysis is nuanced and critically astute. I was really interested in her discussion of how haiku and tanka were conceptualized before Masaoka. I had come across a number of his critical remarks in other books, and they always seemed commonplace or obvious. After reading this book I gained a much clearer idea of what he saw himself as working against, and these remarks then came to make sense as original critical interventions. Her translations of his poems and prose pieces make their literary qualities come alive in a fresh way, and she has a knack for unpacking their significance and layers of meanings and associations in ways that are intriguing rather than overbearing. I don't always agree with her conclusions; his final three death haiku strike me more as expressions of stoic resignation in the face of the inevitable than of the transcendence characteristic of Buddhist enlightenment (and I'm usually the first to go rooting around for Buddhist themes in literature), but she always argues her case well. And throughout the book her fascination and affection for this short-lived man of letters and his art shines through, informing and enriching her literary analysis.

In short, this is first-rate work. Anyone interested in modern poetry, in haiku and tanka, or in Japanese literature in general should give this fine book a look.
