Book Description
While on his meteoric rise in the Union army, Philip H. Sheridan earned the enmity of many Virginians for laying waste to the Shenandoah Valley. His date and place of birth is uncertain, but he himself claimed to have been born in New York in 1831. Although he was destined to come out of the Civil War with the third greatest reputation among the victors, his military career did not begin auspiciously. It took him five years to graduate from West Point (1853) because of an altercation with fellow cadet and future Union General, William R. Terrill.
After serving in a staff position during the early part of the war he was recommended for the command of a cavalry regiment by Gordon Granger. Within days of taking command he was in charge of the brigade with which he earned his first star at Booneville in northern Mississippi. He fought well at Perryville and Murfreesboro and was given a second star in the volunteers.
When Grant went to the East, he placed Sheridan in command of the Army of the Potomac's mounted arm. Following Early's threat to Washington, Grant tapped Sheridan to command a new military division, comprised of three departments, and charged him with clearing out the Shenandoah Valley. For this campaign he was named brigadier and major general in the regular army and received the Thanks of Congress.
The next March he destroyed Early's remaining forces at Waynesboro and then went on a raid, threatening Lynchburg. Rejoining Grant, he smashed through the Confederate lines at Five Forks, necessitating the evacuation of both Petersburg and Richmond. It was his cavalry command, backed by infantry, which finally blocked Lee's escape at Appomattox.
This is a digital reprint of the two Volume C.L. Webster Shoulder Board editions As Published in 1888. This is Volume 1 (ISBN 1582181853) of 2 (ISBN 1582181861).

AT LAST -- the TRUTH.......2002-03-25
This is a wonderful piece of work that finally acknowledges that it was the courage and skill of the UNION (when finally allowed to fight) that won the Civil War and that the whining of the Good ol Boys about being "outnumbered" ect is BUNK!
Book Description
"He was a man who often was incapable of conducting himself properly in the most elementary social interactions. His only continuing contacts with women were limited to his mother, nieces, and housekeepers. He was a man who knew the power of money and desired it, but refused to work for it, preferring to live off the sweat of his family and long-suffering friends, whom he often insulted even as they paid his bills."--from the book
This, then, was Oliver Heaviside, a pioneer of modern electrical theory. Born into a low social class of Victorian England and dying in poverty as a recluse, Heaviside (in between) made advances in mathematics, by introducing the operational calculus; in physics, where he formulated the modern-day expressions of Maxwell's Laws of electromagnetism; and in electrical engineering, through his duplex equations. This acclaimed biography is the only one devoted to Oliver Heaviside. Now available in paperback with a new preface by the author, it will appeal to historians of technology and science, as well as to scientists and engineers who wish to learn more about this remarkable man.
Customer Reviews:
Worth reading.......2007-05-14
This book has a nice mix of scientific history and mathematical information. It's not just pages of equations, but they are there to help explain the concepts. Also the tech notes are great for those of us who like to see how it all works out. I would recommend this book to engineers, scientists, mathematicians, or just people who enjoy a little history of science and technology. Heaviside is quite an interesting person.
A very good book for students and "real" scientist/engineers.......2004-06-27
Students who are really interested in physics, electrical engineering or related subjects would find this book informative and inspiring.
Real electrical engineer would have the deepest feeling when reading through the lines.
Written for a genius (hero) by a great educator of the field.

Revealing biography of a hermit genius .......2004-08-01
Oliver Heaviside was born in London in 1850, the youngest of four sons of a poor and often brutal wood engraver. Oliver never attended college and had only one job for only six years: as a telegraph clerk and technician. Nevertheless he taught himself college-level mathematics and physics. He grew to become a respected expert in electromagnetism: He independently developed vector analysis and thereby cast Maxwell's equations into their modern form. He also studied transmission lines, inventing operator calculus to do so. In studying the electrodynamics of a moving charged sphere, he, with George Searle, anticipated aspects of Einstein's special relativity. However, throughout his adult life he seems to have been handicapped by chronic depression, which made him a cantankerous loner.
This book will be understood and appreciated best by readers who are familiar with college-level electromagnetism. However, the author does try to appeal to a wider audience: he relegates mathematical aspects of Heaviside's work to appendices. (I would have preferred more math since that's the basis of Heaviside's reputation.) The text is liberally sprinkled with excerpts from Heaviside's correspondence and with the author's first-person comments. (I would have preferred a little less of both.) References are abundant. This book should be regarded as the definitive biography of this curious, inspiring genius.
Out-of-Print----BUT NOT FOR LONG.......2001-03-15
As the author of this book, you may want to ignore my rating! I am really writing to simply note that the book will be reprinted late in 2001 or early in 2002 by The Johns Hopkins University Press. I have written a new introduction for the JHUP edition to bring the book up-to-date on all the latest about Heaviside.

Greer Childers, age 53 and mother of three, credits her BodyFlex method with dropping her from a size 14/16 to a size 4/6 in 90 days. Childers had tried jogging, aerobics, and personal trainers; she got firmer but no smaller, and felt tired all the time. "In terms of being a couch potato, I was definitely mashed," she writes. Then she discovered what she calls "aerobic breathing" and claims she started burning off inches. Fitness and weight-loss experts would argue that aerobic exercise--not just breathing--is what burns fat, but Childers insists the method has worked for her and her clients.
Be a Loser presents Childers's own story about trying to lose weight and her theory about weight loss--that oxygen is "the non-medical miracle" and that learning how to breathe "aerobically" is her secret for weight loss. She teaches her breathing technique and a series of simple stretches and nonstrenuous calisthenic exercises that she claims "tone muscle."
Book Description
It takes only 15 minutes a day, and there's no dieting! Greer Childers shows how to lose inches from your waist, hips, and thighs in the very first week. Using the revolutionary BodyFlex program, readers can tone away flab and increase energy through accelerated aerobic deep breathing with stretching, isometric, and isotonic exercises.
A bestseller in hardcover, with over 100,000 copies shipped, Be a Loser! describes the BodyFlex program, includes specialized workouts for problem areas with clearly illustrated instructions on technique, and explains the scientific basis for the program. Bubbling over with the homespun enthusiasm, humor, and can-do optimism of its irrepressible author, Be a Loser! is an easy and fun way to get in shape and increase vitality.
Customer Reviews:
Silly.......2007-05-06
I bought this book because of all the hype in the reviews thinking it must be good. I also bought the VHS. Well the tapes are ridiculous. The book is ridiculous too. Trust me, eat healthy, get some dumbbells and exercise dvds and take the stairs instead of the elevator and you'll slowly lose weight. this is a silly marketing gimick.
Hype, Not Help.......2007-04-06
As a reviewer said below, Greer Childers is convincing. I want to lose ten pounds I gained after going from an active job to a passive job, and actually fell for her latest -- The Seven Minute Solution. The Seven Minute Solution amounts to seven minutes of isometric exercise, a sensible diet, and lots of water. (How stupid do these marketing pros think we are?) There is absolutely nothing in The Seven Minute Solution about breathing. Absolutely nothing. After doing some online research about Greer and her obviously carefully-sculpted body, I realize I fell for the fourth of her various "miracle" solutions. All of her "miracle" solutions are very different, so apparently she'll market anything she thinks will sell. I feel like an idiot.
If you're looking for a way to boost your metabolism through breathing, there are a couple of great books and tapes on the subject here at Amazon (Jumpstart Your Metabolism is a good book some of my former Yoga students use, and Oxygenate is a sensible book and/or tape which unfortunately didn't make it to DVD). I taught Yoga three nights a week for over fifteen years, and breathing really does seem to make a difference in weight loss and maintenance. But Be A Loser won't give you enough information to do much of anything. It's just another of Greer Childers' huge disappointments.
Go From Size 18 to 4?.......2007-03-01
Peggy Griffin from Sacramento says she lost 14 dress sizes on BodyFlex. Maybe she did. But she also lists a high intensity cardio DVD review on her "See All My Reviews" list. I have to think some of her weight loss has been from the cardio workout she did for 11 of those 18 months she attributes to BodyFlex. Just a heads-up to everybody.
Good exercise that you can also use with others.......2006-09-09
I have to admit I was sceptical when I read this book, and only did so because of a friend's recommendation. However, I have been doing the program for a couple of months, and while I haven't noticed that much inch loss, I have been feeling much more energetic and look toned. The secret is in the breathing exercise--it is fantastic done on its own, or even before Pilates or Callanetics exercises (especially the stomach ones).
16 months of BF DVD and down from 18+ pants to 4-6 .......2006-05-25
I use the DVD version of BF every day, and occasionally the exercises from the book. I'm a computer nut so I wanted the DVD to watch. I have to have a workout that I can see and follow step by step and this one is great! I cannot do any of the exercises that require me to place the gymbar over the back of neck, so I just skip those. I was 160 pounds and too overweight to do floor exercises. At first the breathing and toning effects were difficult, but that got easier within 2 weeks. Every morning, before I eat, I do one set of the DVD exercises and my upper abs have shrunk from 37 down to 32, my waist shrunk from a 39 to a 33, my lower abs shrunk from a 41 down to 38, and my hips are now 39" instead of 44. Before I started this workout I looked rather like a huge pear and was ashamed of my huge stomach. I wear a size 10 instead of a size 18, and in the next several months I know I will continue to lose at least an inch a month. The biggest 15 inch loss was in the first 6 weeks of starting BF. Since then the loss is slow but steady. Now I measure and weigh once a month, do my excercises, do not diet at all, and enjoy the results. I'm planning on this DVD as exercise for life. All done while sitting in a chair! Fabulous program. I tried the exercises in Greer's book after 6 months of toning up on the DVD exercises, and I actually could do them! I still prefer the DVD! Do it in the AM, like brushing your teeth, and then forget about it all and enjoy the day. First two things I noticed on BF was the fast initial loss of inches, and my "chicken neck" disappeared! I was so happy to see all parts of my tone up. Do the breathing right and it all works fine. Exhale gently, inhale through the nose fast and deeply and immediately exhale through the mouth, pulling your diaphram (and I pull in my stomach muscles at the same time, something I added) and hold those sucked in and up parts in position for 8 seconds. It's easy to hold to the count of 8 because you are not holding air in which builds pressure. Don't give up Gals and Guys. BF is working on your entire body. The gymbar adds resistance to the movements and is done towards the end of the workout. UPDATE: Been doing BF video for 16 months and can wear a size 4-6 pants. A bit of tummy left, but I look toned all over, not flabby. Surprisingly, weigh about 130, down from 160, only a 30 lb. weight loss, but all the way down from size 18-1X in pants to a size 4-6 but they have elastic waist! [...]

Book Description
The James Beard Foundation/KitchenAid Book Award Winner for Best Single Subject Cookbook
“As the title says, this is about as complete as one cookbook can be.” -- Publishers Weekly
“This is not . . . just for ‘serious cooks,’ but a book for anyone who wants a recipe that works the first time out." -- John Mariani
Vast and authoritative, with 38 chapters containing nearly 500 recipes and 300 illustrations,
The Complete Book of Chicken offers readers the very best methods for preparing chicken, as well as turkey, duck, goose, quail, squab, and pheasant. From one of America’s most respected culinary magazines, Cook’s Illustrated, each recipe and preparation tip has been tested and retested by their award-winning staff. * The surest way to roast chicken with a crisp skin and juicy, tender meat
* Clearly illustrated tips and directions on preparing birds, including carving, stuffing a goose, and butterflying Cornish game hens
* How to prepare and serve less common poultry like duck and other game birds
* Why brining a turkey makes all the difference in the world

There are even recipes for stuffing, gravies, and mayonnaise to use in one of the best chicken salads imaginable. Enlightening, instructive, and invaluable, this is a book for any cook interested in poultry.
Customer Reviews:
great recipes, clear instructions.......2005-07-29
First, I want to say that this is the paperback version of The Cooks Illustrated Complete Book of Poultry (different title, different cover design.) This is a great book especially for those who eat a lot of chicken and are looking for a variety of ways to prepare it, like me. There are recipes for dishes from many different traditions, which I like, and all are tasty. If you look at the table of contents, you'll see that they are arranged by cooking method, which is handy. And the book has all the explanations and clear directions typical of Cooks Illustrated books. My absolutely only complaint is that I appreciate it when an entire recipe is printed across two open pages, so I can put it in my cookbook stand and leave it there, and that is not the case here: I have to turn the page. But that's minor. Highly recommended.
Truly "complete"-useful to the novice & expert alike!.......2005-03-06
This is the sort of cookbook that grows with you. If you're a novice cook, or you cook only because you have to put something on the table every night, you will find this book enlarges the number of fool-proof chicken dishes you can put on the table without much fuss. Each chapter suggests several variations, so you can adapt to what you have on hand or what's fresh at the store. There are also handy chapters on soup, leftovers and turkey breasts.
If you're a more seasoned or adventurous cook-or you'd like to become one!-you will appreciate the scope of the book, which provides basic recipes in 37 chapters, including what to do with duck, goose, quail, squab, and pheasant. With a proven "method" at hand, you can experiment with seasonings & vegetables and feel confident that your new creation will at least be edible. Or if you prefer to stick to the book, there are more complex dishes here, such as Sautéed Butterflied Chicken with Tomato, Olive and Caper Pan Sauce and Grilled Squab with Red Chile-Pumpkin Seed Sauce.
If you like America's Test Kitchen or Cook's Illustrated, this book is a guaranteed winner. Even if that's not you style, you might find the abundance of recipes makes this a winner anyways. Best of all, it's affordable!
Terrific guide to cooking poultry.......2002-12-11
I bought this book at full price in a bookstore and think it was worth every penny; ..., this is a great buy. Not only does it contain many recipes for cooking all sorts of poultry in all sorts of ways (roasting, braising, stir-frying, etc.), but the editors experimented with variations on the different techniques. (For example, they roasted a chicken in almost every way imaginable -- high temp, low temp, turning it, not turning it, etc -- describe their results, and recommend the ones they think are best after explaining why.) Their recipe for butterflied roasted chicken is superb -- I highly recommend this cookbook.

So, your child wants to ride a horse. Here then, in comprehensive detail, are answers to the multitude of problems and questions you will face. Learn how, where and when to best get started--how to find appropriate resources while keeping within an affordable budget for this expensive sport. The author has thoroughly researched and provided answers to every question you or your child will have in beginning, sustaining, and enjoying this very special endeavor. This book provides an unique opportunity to learn all you need know while saving endless time and recurrent difficulties. You'll savor it!
Inside scoop on horseback riding - what are kids thinking?.......2006-06-13
This book by Janet Barrett demonstrates an insiders knowledge of a child learning to ride. What is particularly helpful is that Ms. Barrett knows what is going on in the child's head. Thus the parent knows what to expect when the child suddenly wants to buy a horse or stop lessons for a while. This is a great manual that takes the parent step by step through the process from casual interest to wanting lessons, finding a stable and performing in shows. I would recommend it highly to any parent who hears those words for the first time: mom, I want to ride a horse!"
A Valuable Resource.......2006-06-06
I can't imagine any parent starting their son/daughter in the sport of riding without reading and owning a copy of this book to refer to continuously as they go. It is not only informative on a day-to-day basis, but it is a valuable resource in understanding your child's progression through the sport from the first lesson onward (and yours from even before that!) Throughout, as your child moves from beginner, to intermediate and beyond, the information is explicit and clear. I suggest that anyone whose child wants to ride get this book and keep it as their "bible"!
Highly Recommended!!.......2006-04-29
This book starts with the one's child saying: Mom, I want to ride a horse! Overwhelmed by fears of what you don't know and the expense of an activity you are afraid your child will give up too quickly (or not quickly enough), this book addresses all the questions parents face as they face them. Very easy to read and nicely laid out, this book provided the answers we had as our daughter was deciding if this was "the sport for her". As I knew little to nothing about horseback riding and nothing about stables or lessons, this book helped me make the right decisions at the right time and kept me from rushing into buying more equipment than I needed.
Before you go down this path, read this book!

Customer Reviews:
middling poncho book.......2006-03-13
About 20 ponchos. Two are for little kids. Mostly bulky type yarns on big needles. Good ones are: mitered poncho, entrelac poncho (definitely want to make this one), cabled turtleneck poncho, lace-cable poncho, cable and lattice poncho. Bad idea is the cape with the zipper. Unzip it and zing: it falls to the ground. Mohair poncho (or capelet) has pockets for some strange reason as it's much too short for them. The book might be useful as a stash buster to double up my regular yarns on the ponchos. So not the best of my poncho books but also not the worst. For that one see the Stork book.

Customer Reviews:
Would give it 10 stars if I could!.......2006-05-19
This book is a wonderful 'bible' for both the beginner, as well as the experienced gardener. Recipies, planting instructions, plant selection, healthy soil-building, chemicals-vs.-organics points, lawn and landscape care/maintenance, pest control, diseases, composting, and product suggestions. A complete introduction and guide, detailing just about anything you might wish to know, well written and sensibly organized. And the photo on the front of this tome (of his daughter as a toddler,) sends the point straight home... why would anyone choose to use toxic chemicals when Mother Nature is so helpful?
You won't be sorry for buying this educational, enlightening handbook!
Wonderful Manual.......2000-07-06
This book is a wonderful manual for a person who wants to start gardening the Natural Way. I have read the book cover to cover and continue to refer to it each time I encounter something new in my yard. There is a great calendar which gives you items which you should do each month of the year. I listen the his radio talk show every Sunday.
Outstanding organics manual in plain english........1999-10-05
This book is excellent for beginners and experts alike. It explains techniques, procedures and products in a manner the novice can understand. An added bonus is the conversion measurement tables and monthly "To Do List" listed in the back section of the book.
fantastic introduction to organic gardening.......1998-12-12
Discusses chemicals vs. organics, how to reverse the damage chemicals have done to your soil, how to generate healthy soil, plant varieties and their role in a healthy garden, planting techniques, mulching, organic fertilizers, pest control, and an excellent glossary of terms. Recipes for homemade pest control and fertilizer. Good "product rate chart" to help in applications. How did I garden without it?

What an enlightening experience.......2002-09-28
Dr. Bailey has an image of children and what their lives could be like that is a synthesis of some of the best writing in the field in heart-felt, everyday terms. This book is an invitation to explore your deepest beliefs, your own childhood, your heart, in order to be the type of adult who allows chidlren to flourish, thrive and laugh their way through childhood. I use this book as the bible for my college Guidance for Young Children class and make a gift of it to teachers and parents who are struggling to be the parent or teacher they really want to be. I love this book.
A MUST FOR ANYONE WHO WORKS WITH OR HAS CHILDREN!`.......2000-04-19
Becky Bailey has written possibly one of the best books on guidance ever. She describes the importance of using appropriate, positive techniques when guiding children as opposed to punitive, negative techniques many of us were raised with. This book is easy to read and truly down to earth--no tricky terms or language. She discusses how important it is for children to be given the opportunity and the right to feel, to be validated for how they feel, to feel absolutely safe within their environment along with so many other key components to providing a trusting, nurturing environment for kids. I agree strongly with Bev Bos' comment on the back of the book, "It also needs to be a part of required material sent home from the hospital with every new parent! Becky writes straight from the heart!" Becoming The Parent You Want To Be by L. Davis and J. Keyser is another book that is so compatible with this one. Get them both, learn how to nurture children through their developmental process AND CELEBRATE TOGETHER!!

Book Description
Enka, a sentimental ballad genre, epitomizes for many the nihonjin no kokoro (heart/soul of Japanese). To older members of the Japanese public, who constitute enka's primary audience, this music--of parted lovers, long unseen rural hometowns, and self-sacrificing mothers--evokes a direct connection to the traditional roots of "Japaneseness." Overlooked in this emotional invocation of the past, however, are the powerful commercial forces that, since the 1970s, have shaped the consumption of enka and its version of national identity. Informed by theories of nostalgia, collective memory, cultural nationalism, and gender, this book draws on the author's extensive fieldwork in probing the practice of identity-making and the processes at work when Japan becomes "Japan."
Customer Reviews:
Tears of Longing: Nostalgia and the Nation in Japanese Popular Song.......2007-06-27
This book contained everything that I needed to do my research for the genre of Japanese enka. I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to get to the whys and how the genre is different for others. It is a very detailed book.
ENKA!.......2007-02-04
This may be the only English-language book on the Enka genre, about which it is difficult to find any guides or other information unless you are fluent in the Japanese language. Dr. Yano's approach to this (sadly underappreciated) genre is more from a scholarly approach than as a "fan" of the music, by her own admission, but this book provides a wealth of information about the history, lyrics and visual style of Enka music and its performers. Personally I would have liked to have learned about the "stars" of this genre, particular Hibari Misora, undoubtedly its most famous performer. Also, Enka does exist in the US, though through mostly Japanese-American fans and performers, but this may be another subject of study. Enka may be a declining musical art form, but there are some notable younger performers, like Kitayama Takeshi and Komura Miki. I'm very grateful to Dr. Yano for the information provided by her book!
