    Book Description

In this first modern biography of Nathaniel P. Banks, James G. Hollandsworth, Jr., reveals the complicated and contradictory nature of the man who called himself the "fighting politician." Despite a lack of formal education, family connections, and personal fortune, Banks (1816-1884) advanced from the Massachusetts legislature to the governorship to the U.S. Congress and Speaker of the House. He learned early in his political career that the pretext of conviction can be more important than the conviction itself, and he practiced a politics of expedience, espousing popular beliefs but never defining beliefs of his own. A leader in the new Republican party, he developed a reputation as a compelling orator and a politician with a bright future.

At the onset of the Civil War, Lincoln appointed Banks a major general, and, as Hollandsworth shows, the same pretext of conviction that served Banks so well in politics proved disastrous on the battlefield. He suffered resounding defeats in the 1862 Shenandoah Valley Campaign, the Battle of Cedar Mountain, and the Red River Campaign. Illuminating the personal characteristics that stalled the promise of Banks's early political career and contributed to his dismal record as a commanding officer, Hollandsworth demonstrates how Banks's obsessive pretense of glory prevented him from achieving its reality.

      Book Description

Pamela McCorduck first went among the artificial intelligentsia when the field was fresh and new, and asked the scientists engaged in it what they were doing and why. She saw artificial intelligence as the scientific apotheosis of one of the most enduring, glorious, often amusing, and sometimes alarming, traditions of human culture: the endless fascination with artifacts that think. Machines Who Think was translated into many languages, became an international cult classic, and stayed in print for nearly twenty years.

Now, Machines Who Think is back, along with an extended Afterword that brings the field up to date in the last quarter century, including its scientific and its public faces. McCorduck shows how, from a slightly dubious fringe science, artificial intelligence has moved slowly (though not always steadily) to a central place in our everyday lives, and how it will be even more crucial as the World Wide Web moves into its next generation.

5 out of 5 stars An Update to a Classic.......2005-01-18

Twenty five years ago Pamela McCorduck wrote a definitive book on Artificial Intelligence. She first went among the artificial intelligentsia when the field was fresh and new, and she asked the scientists engaged in it what they were doing and why. She saw artificial intelligence as the scientific apotheosis of one of the most enduring, glorious, often amusing, and sometimes alarming, traditions of human culture: the endless fascination with artifacts that think.

Long out of print, it became a classic, often quoted, but not often read. Now it's back and in a new edition with an extended afterword that brings the field up to date in the last quarter century, including its scientific and public faces. McCorduck shows how, from a slightly dubious fringe science, artificial intelligence has moved slowly to a central place in our everyday lives, and how it will be even more crucial as the World Wide Web moves into its next generation.

4 out of 5 stars An insightful view of AI from an insider in the field........2004-04-11

The field of artificial intelligence, in terms of its research content, and the confidence it expresses in the results of this research, has executed a roller coaster ride in the last five decades. There have been many proposals, many leads not going anywhere, but just as many leads showing great promise but were abandoned. The reasons why they were abandoned are unclear, but many researchers in artificial intelligence have let them themselves be persuaded that their results do not reflect real intelligence. This has thwarted the development of many promising areas in artificial intelligence, which could have been highly developed by now.

The author, in this new edition of her book, has given the reader her opinions of the status of artificial intelligence in the twenty-five years after the first edition of the book. Her assessment of the last twenty-five years is in general optimistic, but her review concentrates mostly on research in the academic setting. There have also been dramatic advances in artificial intelligence in the commercial sector in the last twenty-five years, but many of these are difficult to document, since issues of propriety arise in the business environment. The many applications that are used by business and industry are practical proof of the rise of machine intelligence in the last twenty-five years, and many of these make use of the academic developments that the author discusses in this book.

The self-doubts and concentrated attention expressed by various researchers are well documented by the author, and some interesting historical anecdotes are included. The author describes the "odd paradox" in artificial intelligence as one where the its practical successes are absorbed into the domains in which they found application. Once assimilated, they become "silent partners" alongside other (non-intelligent) approaches. This reinforces the belief that the intelligent applications were not intelligent in the first place, and are then viewed merely as "valuable automatic helpers". This scenario has been played out many times in the history of artificial intelligence, and, even worse, the fact that the workings of these applications were understood made many assert that this was proof of their non-intelligence. If a process or algorithm is understood, it cannot be intelligent. This bias, the author correctly observes, continues to this day. Regardless of these beliefs or prejudices, the fact remains though that many of today's computers and machines are packed full of intelligence, albeit in different levels, and these levels will dramatically increase in the next twenty-five years.

Researchers in artificial intelligence have been accused of exaggerating the status of machine intelligence, and similar to the same exaggerations that occur in other fields, which arise many times from pressures to obtain funding, these accusations do have some truth to them. But the author points out a case where the funding was cancelled due to the project not being "extravagant enough." This is an interesting historical fact, and one that illustrates the large swings in confidence that have plagued AI research from the beginning.

The strong emphasis on emulating human intelligence has been dampened in recent years, with researchers realizing, refreshingly, that human intelligence is not the only kind in nature. It is in retrospect quite surprising that silicon-based machines were thought to be able to mimic the processes and powers of biological systems. The author quotes one researcher as saying that "Silicon intelligence would surely be different from human intelligence". This is indeed correct, and one can expect many different types of intelligence to reside in future machines, each of these types emphasizing particular tasks, but being general enough to think in many domains. Maybe a better word for describing the field would be to call it `Alien Intelligence', so as to emphasize the (non-human) idiosyncrasies of these different intelligences.

With very exceptions, the philosophical community has been against the possibility of artificial intelligence. This continues to this day, and the author discusses some of the philosophical tirades leveled against artificial intelligence since the first edition of the book. Researchers in AI have taken the time (unfortunately) to answer some of these criticisms, but there is also a trend, which hopefully will continue, to ignore them and instead spend time on what is important, namely the design and construction of intelligent machines. There is no penalty in ignoring philosophical criticism; it lends no constructive insight into artificial intelligence. However there is a great penalty taken in the form of wasted hours in attempting to answer the vague and impractical claims of philosophers. Ironically, there have been a few renowned philosophers that have left the practice of philosophy and have entered into research into artificial intelligence (and have done a fine job in this regard).

The author also shares with the reader her personal insights into artificial intelligence, and these are interesting considering her involvement with some of the major academic experts in AI. She describes her bias in thinking of (mobile) robots as the sole representative of artificial intelligence. This bias has been alleviated to a large degree in the last decade, but many still equate artificial intelligence to the presence of bipedal robots wandering around performing useful tasks or possibly acting as adversaries to human beings. The latter view of course is very popular in Hollywood interpretations of artificial intelligence. The real truth though is that (immobile) machines, be they servers in networks, laptop computers, or other types of machines, can exhibit high levels of intelligence, depending on what kind of "software" or "mind" is overlaid on them.

The most important thing to be settled for the field of artificial intelligence, and this is brought out also in many of the author's remarks, is a general methodology for gauging machine intelligence. The Turing test is too subjective and tied too much to measures of human intelligence. The AI community definitely needs to arrive at quantitative measures of machine intelligence in order to assess progress and allow the business community to judge more accurately whether a certain level of machine intelligence is needed for their organizations.

This is my favorite diabetic cookbook. My response to the unfavorable review about the portion size is that you have to adjust your eating habits to less meat and more starch and vegetables. You don't have to go hungry!

        1 out of 5 stars a disappointment.......2000-07-27

I was very disappointed in this book. The portion sizes are very small. I certainly could not satisfy anyone in my family with a half cup of beef stir fry (noted as the serving size for this receipe). The receipes were good but you must figure on two serving sizes for each person for most main dish receipes. Explanations of food exchanges was very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars All New Cookbook for Diabetics and Their Families.......1999-11-23

This ccobook has very simple, easy to prepare meals. ALL the ingredients are things you would find in a normal pantry. Not items that need to be purchased at specilaty stores. EXCELENT!

5 out of 5 stars Bought the book and carved one.......2006-07-23

THe book is excellent. It gives a very nice detailed accounting of how to carve a mallard duck detail, soup to nuts. The illustrations are beautiful, the text generally excellent. Covers wood selection, tools, details of carving (down to the shape of the nostrils on the bill and the overlap of the feathers), painting (which takes the bird from a fine shape to the gorgeous bird on the cover).

I am a budding sculptor, and I have a lot to learn. The most important lessons appear to be:
          1. Get A LOT of reference material. It would be ideal if you have live ducks wandering around nearby so you can get ready 3D inspiration.
          2. Stop FREQUENTLY just to LOOK at the work. It's easy to get too caught up in the process and lose sight of the shape of the whole. I messed up the wings on my first duck and had to start over.

The book has some references for glass eyes, carving tools, etc, but it was a bit sparse. A larger list might be nice.

She is very detailed and her examples come from around the world. Rhoda Kellogg is the researcher who is quoted so often in other books on children in art. So having her first hand research and writing is getting it from the source. If you work with children you will recognize the illustrations. The historical background relates the drawings to those done by others around the world. It is excellent for those who seek to study what can be learned from children's art.

                Book Description

Volume I is the first of two volumes that document the three components of the CHILDES Project. It is divided into two parts which provide an introduction to the use of computational tools for studying language learning. The first part is the CHAT manual, which describes the conventions and principles of CHAT transcription and recommends specific methods for data collection and digitization. The second part is the CLAN manual, which describes the uses of the editor, sonic CHAT, and the various analytic commands. The book will be useful for both novice and experienced users of the CHILDES tools, as well as instructors and students working with transcripts of child language.

Volume II describes in detail all of the corpora included in the CHILDES database. The conversational interactions in the corpora come from monolingual children and their caregivers and siblings, as well as bilingual children, older school-aged children, adult second-language learners, children with various types of language disabilities, and aphasic recovering from language loss. The database includes transcripts in 26 different languages.

The CD-ROM that accompanies these volumes includes the transcript files described in Volume II. It runs on both Windows and Macintosh platforms. For more information or updates to the files, visit the CHILDES Web site at http://childes.psy.cmu.edu

                            Book Description

Sparked by an editor's comment that "creating a good column is like writing a letter to a friend," Mas Masumoto began a column--in the form of letters to friends, to his father, his daughter, and others--that has become a regular feature in the "Fresno Bee." Heyday Books is delighted to present the collected letters here, with their original watercolor illustrations by Doug Hansen.

Masumoto grows organic peaches and grapes on his family farm in California's Central Valley. Celebrated by chefs and farmers, a proponent of the Slow Food movement, he touches on the themes that have won him a loyal readership--taking the time to savor precious moments and people; the value of honest work; and the importance of protecting a changing landscape and disappearing way of life--Masumoto offers what few other writers can in this day and age: a truly personal touch.

Excellent very personal approach to life in the San Jaquine Valley. The art work integrated into the letters made the book even more enjoyable.

5 out of 5 stars A taste of farm life.......2005-08-09

Through letters to his dad, neighbors, friends and sons, Mas Masumoto has show us a glimps of organic farm life in California. Farm life is hard, long hours during harvest seasons under the hot Valley sun, in return, it gives little financial rewards. What makes Mas choose such hard way of life: the family tradition, a good harvest after hard labor, memory of good, delicious, mouth watering sun crest peaches, the smell of his father's shirt, or the values that he will pass on to his sons. I am not sure, but I sure taste the sweet, delicious sun crest peach and feel the joy after seeing people savoring his labor of love.
After reading this book and other books from Mas, I feel the urge to shop more organic products and help out local farmers. This is a good read for us city folks who never experience the hard life of farming and wish we also have memories of good delicious fruits picked at the perfect time, not riped from a truck.

"Past Tents: The Way We Camped" by Susan Snyder (director of Access Services in The Bancroft Library, University of California, Berkeley) is a photographic and descriptive history of family outings during the first years of the automobile, and of campgrounds and campfires against the backdrop of the Sierra Nevada, of the special gear and `helpful' hints for vacationing in the newly formed state and national parks and forests. "Past Tents" is a work of nostalgia, memory, and a yesteryear that saw the beginnings of ordinary people being able to sample and experience the extraordinary outdoors. An informed and entertaining history of early camping in the American West, "Past Tents" is superbly enhanced with historic photos and makes a welcome and much appreciated addition to academic and community library Popular Culture and American History collections.

5 out of 5 stars An Intimate Look at the Last Days of a Wonderful Man.......2007-09-13

I did not know exactly what to expect with this book. I had finished From Sawdust to Stardust: The Biography of DeForest Kelley, Star Trek's Dr. McCoy (Star Trek) (which I enjoyed very much) and was interested in learning more about De, and happened upon "A Harvest of Memories" which seemed to be just what I was looking for. It turned out to be very different from what I had expected - unlike so many other books like it, this book provided a very intimate and personal look at DeForest Kelley in a way that I found surprising, refreshing, sad, and real. The later half of the book provides an uncensored look at the last days of De, right down to the nitty gritty reality of being so ill you can not do anything for yourself; not even take a bath or use the bathroom. To some who have had experiences with loved ones passing over the course of long illnesses that render them physically weak and reliant upon others, I should warn you that this book will bring those memories back to you in a strong way. If you can endure, though, the reward is something you'll never get otherwise; a chance to feel as if you truly knew DeForest Kelley. Not the actor, not the celebrity, not Doctor McCoy - but De, the wonderful, kind, gentle, man. I am fortunate to have met, via conventions, almost every member of every cast of every Star Trek series both regular and recurring. Yet with De, I never had the opportunity; I became a Star Trek fan only in 1996, attended by first real convention in 1998, and De was gone in the summer of 1999. This book made me feel as if I finally did get to meet him - more, really. It made me feel as if I was lucky enough to know him.

5 out of 5 stars Being Led Along a Unique Path..........2007-04-25

It has taken me nearly 8 years to come to the point where I could bring myself to read about the life of DeForest Kelley, who was so dear to me. As, I'm sure, with most readers of A Harvest of Memories, I was moved to tears very often by the touching narrative. It is the story of Kris Smith's devotion to a great man and his message. Because we learn of his very nature, which made him stand out from the crowd, NO ONE who has read this book could ever say, "I can't see DeForest for de trees!"

Living day to day through Kris's extraordinary experience, encourages all of us to try to do the "De-thing" and I hope that, when it is my turn, I can bow out of this life with even a fraction of the grace and heart that De showed all through his life.

Though I have come to learn De's story rather late after his passing, I shall not forget it. Kris Smith was in a unique position to mesh the details of her own life and those of the Kelleys into a seamless, heartfelt and heartbreaking odyssey. The reader is guided gently by a very special person with very special memories!

5 out of 5 stars Deforest Kelley: A Harvest of Memories.......2007-01-19

I found this book to be a very good read. I didn't expect anything but the authors memoir about the time she spent with the Kelleys. I was touched by the way she voluntarily helped people who needed her. I haven't been in that situation yet, but I know people who have and have seen first hand the toll it takes on a caregiver.

1 out of 5 stars DeForest Kelley: A Harvest Of Memories.......2006-12-27

As one reviewer proclaimed that this was Kristine's life and times. This fiction was incredible in showing her delusions and fanatical insight toward a very, very private man. It is not recommended reading for those who respect DeForest Kelley. My condolences to Carolyn Kelley who had to put up with this nonsense.

                            5 out of 5 stars Touching story.......2006-11-15

Kristine's memories of DeForest Kelley was especially meaningful for me especially the last part where she served as his caregiver. I recently did the same for my father while my mother was ill at the same time. It takes a special sort of person to do what Kristine did for the Kelly's. For fans of the cast of the original Star Trek series this is a must read. It shows an honest look at what fandom can be and what a fine person DeForest Kelly was.

5 out of 5 stars Truly wonderful, "kitchen friendly" dishes.......2002-08-10

Sally Maraventano drew from her own Italian family history to showcase 125 delicious and healthy recipes for Festa del Giardino: A Harvest Of Recipes And Family Memories. All of these recipes are prepared without animal fats and are arranged in a classic Italian menu format, including antipasti, first course, main course, side dishes, and desserts. From Insalata Mista (Mixed Green Salad with Oil and Vinegar Dressing); to Pappardelle con Salsa alle Verdure (Wide Ribbon Pasta with Hearty Vegetable Sauce); to Pizza alle Melanzane (Spicy Eggplant Pizza); to Polenta alla Pizzaiola (Cornmeal Squares with Spicy Tomato Sauce), these are truly wonderful, "kitchen friendly" dishes that would grace any table and satisfy any appetite.

5 out of 5 stars Good cooking! Good memories!.......2000-06-26

A lovely cookbook - just the kind I look for to find simple recipes and lots of inspiration. Ms. Maraventano has captured a perfect balance between memoir and cookbook. I bought it because it promised lots of practical uses for the great summer bounty of Jersey vegetables -- tomotoes, zucchini, basil, etc. I found that and much, much more. Each recipe has a simple introduction that reminded me of my own Italian family. It's the collection of recipes I wish I'd kept myself. Whether for a summer supper of beautiful vegetables or for a cozy, "safe from the storm" pasta dish that I associate with fall evenings, I found comfort, nostalgia and the desire to cook in "Festa Del Giardino." Go out and buy it! Enjoy summer. Enjoy fall. Every season. Enjoy life!
