Book Description
Reprinted over a century and a half since first being published, this facsimile of the Third Edition, which was referred to by Sir Charles Oman as being 'an interesting and not always discreet account of his busy life at Head-Quarters' and as being the best for hard facts. As Judge-Advocate-General charged with the responsibility of reforming and simplifying the disciplinary machinery in the Duke of Wellingtons' army, he was in almost daily contact with the Duke himself and has provided an excellent firsthand account of the working of Wellington's headquarters.

Life in the Treetops reflects many of the difficulties faced by women scientists in all fields. Margaret Lowman, a field biologist specializing in forest-canopy research, shows how dealing with the emotional challenges is as tough as or tougher than dangling from a precarious perch counting beetles or facing down a deadly sea snake. This chronicle of her adventures (and misadventures) among the treetops encourages readers to understand both the science and the scientist. One can't help but sympathize with Lowman as she struggles to be a good researcher and a traditional rural housewife at the same time, and fails. Luckily, her kids and parents always remain supportive, taking care of the house during her long absences and accompanying her to faraway research stations when possible. Lowman studies small things--leaves and insects, mostly--and getting to them can be tricky. She chronicles the history of forest-canopy research techniques (which have grown apace with her career), starting with simple climbing gear and ending with treetop walkways and giant construction cranes. Life in the Treetops is an engaging look at one woman's struggle to find balance, whether she's high up in a tree or on the ground with her fellow humans. --Therese Littleton
Book Description
A pioneering tree canopy scientist for more than twenty years, Margaret D. Lowman first gained access to the treetops with ropes and ladders, later a cherrypicker, and recently with such advanced methods as hot-air balloons and treetop walkways. In this absorbing book, Lowman describes her scientific studies in forest canopies around the world and her challenges as a field biologist, wife, and single parent.
Customer Reviews:
My thoughts on this book.......2002-01-02
This unique book is about Margaret Lowman's life as a self-described field biologist who studies the mysteries of forest canopies, one of the last biotic frontiers on Earth. In Life in the Treetops, Lowman is a pioneer canopy scientist she describes the little known worlds of the treetops, their inhabitants, flowers and fruits, growth and mortality, patterns of diversity, and plant and animal interactions. Lowman writes about how, in order with the scientific hypothesis she was focusing on, a different canopy access technique was used. She's particularly good at exposing the life of a field biologist from a woman's perspective, what it was like to cope: with the demands of a challenging career; with marriage to an Australian sheep farmer; with housewifery; with motherhood to two young sons; with conflicting cultural differences about gender roles; and with divorce and single parenthood. Lowman's descriptions of her various arboreal ecological projects were fascinating. She emphasized the pleasures and intellectual rewards of studying the natural world without ignoring the projected vicissitudes of researching in wilderness settings. In the end Lowman is the director of research and conservation at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota, Florida. This is an inspiring story for everyone, not just for women or those interested in careers in science, but for everyone.
A young woman's perspective.......2001-10-23
As a young woman who hopes with all her heart and works with all of her passion to be a scientist one day, I recommend this novel without a doubt. Dr. Lowman attacks every issue she faces head on, candidly describing her emotion and scientific endeavors as if the reader is a personal friend. As a female, I myself can relate to her described frustration of being a woman in a primarily male field. Even my closest male friends look at me with doubt and treat my five year love affair (ongoing, of course) with science as a joke simply because I am female (as the butt of their jokes imply). It's wondorous to read of other accounts involving similar emotion. On a scientific note, Dr. Lowman makes no adjustments for fear of the reader who does not care for biology; she writes about science just as she writes about emotion. For that, I urge parents to prod their children to read this memoir, adults to read, and all others to digest.
Margaret Explains It All.......2001-07-10
Margaret Lowman writes candidly about her life... as though we were the closest of friends. I expected her to write about her research, the difficulties of climbing into the rainforest canopies, and her globe trotting. And she did. She also writes of the professional challenges, cultural clashes, and personal problems she encounters as a woman in field biology, and that makes this book something quite special.
ON THE PERSONAL SIDE: Lowman married an Australian, had two children and lived in the outback, while conducting research on the Australian rain forests. On the personal side, she was expected to be a housewife, and mother. Her new Australian husband, and in-laws, did not understand her inner drive to spend time in her work. While clearly her new family did not support her in her work, Lowman persisted and achieved. She also made a decision to accept a teaching position at Williams College back in the US. She packed up the boys, and headed for home. She exchanged her marriage, and the boy's father, for a surprisingly supportive scientific community and her own supportive parents. Lowman tells of her personal life with candor, but without bitterness. While no one could accuse her of having an ordinary life, Lowman's book is also an every woman's story in that she chronicles the kind of day-to-day struggle of professional/career women faced (particularly in the 1970's and 1980's) in balancing career and family.
ON THE PROFESSIONAL SIDE: To help understand the interdependence of the rainforests Lowman mostly studies the small things... leaves, and the insects that eat them. It sounds easier than it is. Most of the leaves to be studied are high up in the canopy of the rain forests. Early in her career, she gains access using ropes and harnesses, and even a cherry picker when she was pregnant; later she has the luxury of using a construction crane, a dirigible, and even a walkway. Lowman loves the forests, and her work. (Her book contains an illustration of her favorite tree, ficus watkinsiana.)
Lowman ends the book telling us that it takes about the "same amount of energy to complain as it does to explain-but the results are incredibly different." Her book explains a great deal. I highly recommend it.
Well-written account of a life in science.......2001-06-25
Margaret Lowman is a gifted biologist with a knack for finding ways to teach others the importance of her field and the need for conservation. Her adventures range from the humorous to the frightening and are guaranteed to hold the reader's interest. I held off a five-star rating only because I would have liked a little more information on some of the animals she's studied. Her impressions of Nature's little-known and often-overlooked creatures are valuable and fascinating, and I wish more space had been devoted to them. That's a minor quibble, though. As a writer on nature myself, I came away from reading this book with an improved understanding of how complex the "web of life" is, not to mention a determination to get my own children out into the forests more often.
Life in the Treetops.......2001-05-05
Margaret Lowman's story, Life in the Treetops, is an inspiration for young women considering a life in science. She tells how she balanced a career as a field biologist, studying the forest canopy, with being a wife and mother, and eventually a single parent. Her stories of her experiences as a researcher and tree climber in such exotic locals as the Australian outback, Cameroon, Belize and Panama are intermingled with her observations about the inhabitants of these locals, the people she worked with and her sons. Her perseverance in a field dominated by men has given her an interesting perspective about science and life in general.

The media reports daily on breakthrough drugs, vitamins and herbs; almost as often, it reports on pills taken off the market for causing harmful side effects. As it's impossible to keep track of all these recommendations and warnings, a copy of Dr. Rosenfeld's Breakthrough Health ought to come in handy in any household.
While Dr. Rosenfeld is decidedly popular with the AARP crowd, he has tips to benefit people of all ages, including the latest treatments to try (and those to avoid) for asthma, epilepsy, male menopause, sleep problems, and even wrinkles, with all recommendations earning his seal of approval because they've been proven effective based on rigorous scientific studies. For example, he touts a vitamin/mineral "cocktail" of beta-carotene, zinc, copper, and vitamins A and C for combating the progression of macular degeneration; he also dispels the belief that drinking coffee is linked to the development of diabetes. His sharpest criticism is given to the trendy "total body scans" designed to discover cancer tumors and other diseases before any symptoms are felt. Since a CT scan of only the abdominal area gives a dose of radiation "equivalent to that from 100 to 150 chest x-rays," Dr. Rosenfeld writes, "these so-called preventative scans aren't worth the risk."
Since the rash of drug recalls of late indicate that it's impossible to trust the FDA and its corrupt approval process for new drugs, it's a good thing that there are physicians like Dr. Rosenfeld separating the facts from the heap of hype regarding medical developments. As the doc himself says, "Your life may depend on it." --Erica Jorgensen

A Health Encyclopedia That Anyone Can Understand.......2007-03-06
Talk about cramming a ton of information into an accessible, bite-sized format! The latest incarnation of Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld's Breakthrough Health is just plain easy to read. His straightforward style relies on layman's language but comes packed with enough depth and detail to hold the attention of his fellow physicians.
He addresses dozens of the issues that affect the quality of daily life in America such as obesity, Botox, bad breath, and unsightly skin rashes but intermixes this lighter fare with important and up-to-date advice on stopping most of our big-ticket killers such as breast, colon and prostate cancer, HIV and heart disease. Without being condescending, he offers it all in language any high school student could understand.
Two subjects I would have liked to have seen him include, are the modern CT screening test for coronary calcium, a now-proven technology to prevent heart attacks and the latest on lung cancer, the king of all malignancies. Exciting early detection in both areas has been in the news for some time and his popular readership could use the scoops. Next edition perhaps?
Of course any book that tries to keep up with the latest in medical advancement has some outdated elements before it leaves the printing press. But like buying a new computer, the effort is still worth it. The good news is that any home library equipped with different editions of Dr. Rosenfeld's many books will allow the layperson to research a particular medical issue by following how our understanding in the area has evolved over the past decade. Armed with this, plus a quick Internet search for the very latest, the patient can effectively become their own best advocate.

A reference book for whatever health problem.......2005-07-06
There's a kindly looking, grandfatherly doctor on the cover of this book and inside he confides to you 167 up-to-the-minute medical discoveries, treatments and cures that can save your life. Who wouldn't want to read this book?
Have you ever wanted to corner a doctor at a party and pick their brain about your newest symptom or self-diagnosis, but social graces prevented you? Well this informative book is the closest you can get to that banter.
Breakthrough Heath is a medical reference book that you can refer to many times. It's written in a simple direct approach and broken down into alphabetized chapters on illnesses from alcoholism to wrinkles. Within each chapter, Dr. Rosenfeld writes about "the latest news" in current studies on subjects in the area of medication, treatments and the "bottom line," which incorporates his personal suggestions.
Some other subject's covered are: breast cancer, cold and flu, depression, diabetes, reflux disease, lupus, menopause, Parkinson's disease, sinusitis and stroke. If every time you read or re-read this book you discover one new thing to try or one more question to raise with your personal physician, it will certainly be worth the price.
Keep current with medical research that matters to you.......2005-04-30
Once again Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld, M.D. brings the reader up to date with the most recent advances in health. He provides current research including not only traditional methods of treating medical problems but also all the current research using less conventional techniques. Areas covered include allergies and asthma, alzheimer's, arthritis, cancer, depression, diabetes, ear infections, heartburn, heart disease, high blood pressure, overactive bladder, tendonitis, uterine fibroids, and many others. For each item he gives a brief synopsis of it, follows with a section titled "Here's What's New", and concludes with a section called "The Bottom Line". A great reference for catching up with current research from a highly respected source, Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld's 2005 Breakthrough Health: Up-to-the-Minute Medical News You Need to Know is highly recommended.

yummy anticipation.......2005-09-08
I want to taste these goodies and try to cook some of them. Format of region was helpful for traveling in Mexico.
Indespensible book.......2005-03-27
We've just returned from our first visit to Oaxaca. The xeroxed copy of the Oaxaca section from Cooks Tour was the second most used reference (the street map was first). Since we bought this book nearly a decade ago, it's been the basic resource for information on fondas, markets, local specialties etc. Some of the recipes are such staples that I've forgotten their source until I run across them when using the book. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Delightful and Authentic Regional Guide to Mexican Cooking.......2002-09-06
This is a very fine collection of unpretentious, delicious recipes - wonderful food as cooked by real Mexicans. The descriptions of local markets and fondas are rendered with affection, humor and a healthy dose of common sense. In short, a book that should be in the collection of every Mexican cooking aficionado.
Steve Sando is a Moron!.......2001-04-19
This book rocks! I don't know if Mr. Sando is used to Taco Bell or what? The food I have made form this book has all been superb. The flavor is authentic. Some of the recipies are simple and some quite involved! Not every recipe needs a list of 20+ ingredients and 3 pages of instructions to be wonderfully flavorful. The many types of moles are some of the best I have ever had. Anyone who looks in cookbooks for travel tips is delusional. Great cookbook!
great cookbook and travel guide.......1998-01-04
This is a great cookbook. I've traveled a lot in Mexico and cooked a lot of Mexican food, using the classic cookbooks like Diana Kennedy's. The recipes that I've tried in this one are uniformly terrific. Just as important, the accompanying narratives and photos draw you back into the whole sensual experience of Mexico, so both the cooking and the eating take on an added dimension of rich experience.

WASTE OF MONEY.......2007-04-04
This book is a huge pile of fecal material. There is not $100 worth of useful information in this text. Try a different dissection guide.
Student's opinion.......2005-06-28
This book is horrible! The text is useless, especially for the cow dissection. The legends for the pictures are frequently wrong too. Constatinescu needs to stick to drawing pictures and leave the writing to someone else.

No subtance........2006-12-16
I ordered this, and it is just basically just a mini sewing dictionary. It gives terms and defines them.. and recommends what you should have in a sewing box... no real details on how to sew. The only nice part is the project cards that it comes with. If you are wanting to LEARN to sew and learn different techniques... this isn't what you should get. Disapointing.
Great attractive projects.......2006-01-15
First, I have not purchased this product, yet. However, as an accomplished seamstress I think this would be a great, fun gift for someone interested in starting to sew for himself or herself. Over the years, so many of my friends have expressed interest in having me teach them. Because of time schedules, this has never happened, but I am thinking of giving out this book to them to illustrate how easy it would be for them to start. Especially since nowadays there are so many decent beginner sewing machines under the $100 price mark.

good information.......2007-08-23
I think this is a great resource for women and worth reading. Good background information about heart disease in women as well as how to prevent it and what you can do about it. Good nutritional advice and sound habits to get in to. Beware to have the latest information that books sometimes lack.
women need to read this book.......2007-03-01
All women - and anyone who knows and loves a woman who might have cardiovascular disease - should read this book. The information is clear and easy to follow. There is a lot of information, but you can glean a lot of useful tips and helpful advice without studying every word. The great part of this book is that there is a recipe for treating and preventing this disease that really works.
According to statistics from this book and others:
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the largest single cause of death among women, accounting for one third of all deaths. In the United States, more women die from cardiovascular diseases -461,000 women-- each year than from all types of cancer and the next three leading causes of death combined. Each year, heart disease and stroke kills more women than men. One woman dies every minute in the U.S. from cardiovascular illnesses. In the U.S., 38.2 million women are living with cardiovascular disease and the population at risk is even larger. Minority women are particularly at risk for heart disease and stroke. For example, nearly half of African American women (45%) have some form of cardiovascular disease, compared to 32 percent of white women. As women get older, their risk increases. One in 10 American women aged 45 to 64 has some form of heart disease, and this rises to one in four women over the age of 65. In addition, 2 million women have had a stroke, and 93,000 women die of this condition each year--that's 40,000 more women than men.
As a result of the lack of public and scientific attention to these diseases in females, women have not known they were at risk and have often been under-diagnosed, not as aggressively treated and not offered critical preventive interventions as compared with men. As a result of these gender disparities, since 1984 more women have died each year from heart disease than men and the gap between men and women's survival continues to widen. 42% of women who have heart attacks die within 1 year as compared to 24% of men. Under age 50, women's heart attacks are twice as likely to be fatal as men's.
This book (and others by the same author) counters the lack of knowledge and advice that women are getting from their healthcare practitioners. I recommend you take the book with you to your next doctor's appointment and make sure your doctor knows about CVD in women and about the recommendations in this book.
Very boring, reads like a textbook........2003-05-01
I found this book to be very boring. I bought it because I had seen it referanced in a lot of magazine articles. It may be good for looking up useful information on heart disease, but not really a preventative book. The diet recommended in this book is unrealistic to me and seems like a diet that would be recommended to a person who was diagnosed with heart disease and had to change their lifestyle.
Informative but hard to keep reading.......2003-03-29
I bought this book because I had seen a lot of people referance from it in magazine articles so I assumed it would be very informative. While it is informative it is very much like reading a text book for me. I have had to read it in small portions at a time because so much information at one time gets pretty boring. I find myself taking notes while I read it so that I can remember key points that I felt were important. The "Mediterranean" diet that this book recommends for a healthy heart is really unrealistic in my opinion. It basically cuts out most foods that people enjoy eating and leaves a very bland diet. I love eating and I do try to eat healthy, but this diet is just too much. I would recommend this book as an informative book for women who have a family history of heart disease and enjoy reading very educational books on women's health.

A refreshingly honest tale of an ordinary man's life.......2006-08-05
This is a wonderful book. Facey is a fantastic narrator who leaves you hungry to read more. He lives through both world wars, and he records his thoughts honestly.
It is a great book, as it shows the Australian struggle during the time period. Plus the events that Facey lives through are dramatic. This book does not have one boring page in it, as Facey had such an interesting life.
As a result of Facey's honesty, the book will make you laugh, cry and gasp at his experiences. It is a tale of endurance and triumph.
My lecturer recommended this to us as "the greatest souvenir you could take from Australia", and he is certainly right.
Good Job.......2005-09-12
I received the shipment on time, and the book was in the same condition as described.
A Truely Great Read.......2003-08-27
I bought this book when it first was released. After reading it, I bought about 20 copies to give to friends for Christmas. It is a great book. Without giving away the true story, it is about the hard life of a man, told by himself as though you are sitting at his knee as a grandchild. This is a story of a 'ordinary man' who thought of himself as such; but he was really a hero of his generation, and actually LIVED history.

Bunny's Nutshell Library.......2005-03-19
One of the sweetest little collections I've kept all these years. All the characters- Springfellow, Roger, Juniper, the last dandelion, and of course the first robin. I still have the whole tiny library along with other tiny old library sets. Treasure them for as long as you can!
The cutest book ever!.......2003-09-07
I've had this book since I was a child, it was a set of 3 or 4 tiny books (I would love to find the others!). It's about a rabbit living in an Easter egg who is very lonesome. He meets another rabbit on the back side of the egg & they become friends. She enjoys her visit with him, and never does return to the "dull" side of the egg.. they live out their bunny days happy together. It still gives me the warm fuzzies when I read it. :-)
They don't get cuter than this!.......2003-07-01
The sweet lil bunny named Juniper lives in an Easter egg. He's just so darn lonely 'cause the glass swan and the lamb won't play with him. Then one day he he meets another bunny named Jeanette.........
I got this cute collection of books when I was a youngin' and I still have it. It's a miniature book and is very irrisistible! There are adorable water color pictures of Juniper's world throughout and a very happy ending.
The other books are sweet too. More books should be this adorable.
