"I am lucky to be alive," writes Khidhir Hamza on the opening page of this memoir, which reads like a thriller. Hamza describes how he helped Saddam Hussein design a nuclear bomb over the course of 22 years. He has an amazing story to relate, and with the help of collaborator Jeff Stein, he tells it remarkably well. It begins with his cloak-and-dagger escape from Baghdad in 1994, then goes back in time to describe the education he received earlier in the United States. Hamza returned to his native Iraq, and Saddam seduced him into accepting the comfortable life of an atomic scientist trying to build a bomb for a megalomaniac. Hamza presents a terrifying, almost psychotic portrait of Hussein himself: the dictator--a man with "yellow, lifeless eyes"--has a paranoid fear of germs and a taste for Johnnie Walker Blue Label. He's prone to drunken rages and relies on sedatives to keep control of himself: "His personality grew more erratic with the ups and downs of the drugs, the liquor, and the pressures of command." Hamza recounts a story told by one of Saddam's doctors, in which the strongman was found "stomping about his palace bedroom in a blood-splotched shirt" near the body of a woman whose throat was slit.

Hamza was eventually kept under house arrest, and even threatened with torture. His escape was an astonishing feat, and the message he brought to the West is vital: "I have no doubt that Iraq is pursuing the nuclear option." The Gulf War slowed development, but failed to shut it down. The coalition that knocked Saddam out of Kuwait has fallen apart, and United Nations inspectors no longer try to keep him in check. Hamza urges policymakers to confront Saddam, and suggests that the CIA redouble its efforts to help topnotch scientists flee from their virtual captivity. If rogue nations experience a brain drain, he says, their capacity to produce weapons of mass destruction will suffer. Saddam's Bombmaker is hard to put down and essential reading for anybody interested in national security. --John J. Miller

    Book Description

"DON'T TELL ME ABOUT THE LAW. THE LAW IS ANYTHING I WRITE ON A SCRAP OF PAPER." -- SADDAM HUSSEIN

In a white-knuckle thriller, Khidhir Hamza, who spent twenty years developing Iraq's atomic weapon, recounts his life in Saddam Hussein's inner circle and his daring flight to the West.

Taking readers into the darkest corners of a regime ruled by a volatile, brutal leader, Dr. Hamza, the only defector who has lived to write a firsthand portrait of Iraq, also presents an unprecedented portrait of Saddam -- his drunken rages, his women, his cold-blooded murder of underlings, and his unrivaled power. If pushed to the wall, Saddam will use the bomb that Dr. Hamza helped create.

From the relentless dangers Dr. Hamza endured in Iraq to his harrowing flight across three continents and his first encounter with skeptical CIA agents who turned him away, Saddam's Bombmaker is a true-to-life thriller as rich in danger, intrigue, and personal courage as a well-crafted spy novel.

The defector once responsible for Iraq's clandestine nuclear weapons program reveals for the first time what the CIA and Iraq desperately want to keep hidden -- that Saddam Hussein is devastatingly close to manufacturing nuclear weapons and has every intention of using them.

4 out of 5 stars Book Has Problems But Is An Important Contribution.......2006-10-22

Saddam's Bombmaker is an important contribution to our understanding of the challenges faced by groups and states trying to produce their own nuclear weapon.
How Iraq and Hamza went about trying to obtain fissile materiel and advanced tools and parts is the most interesting and important part of the book. You will be alternatively pleased at how hard it is to obtain some items (like plutonium) and dismayed at how easy it is to obtain others from willing states and companies. The book should be read by those interested in obtaining a better understanding of nuclear proliferation.
Now to the shortcomings of the book---
    (1) the chronology is hard to follow, the author doesn't reference a lot of dates and flips back and forth between present, past and future.
    (2) It's hard to not to become skeptical of Dr. Hamza's motives at certain points. He claims to have been forced and terrorized to work on Saddam's bomb, but was simultaneously enjoying all the comforts and benefits that Saddam's regime had to offer like new cars, high living and perks. One wonders whether Dr. Hamza's conscience really caught up with him as he claims, or did he just read the writing on the wall that there was no future in Saddam's Iraq?

5 out of 5 stars A small point of clarification...........2006-10-17

Convinced he had discovered that Iraq was only ` a few inches' away from finishing a successful production of the `Bomb', the author suddenly summoned undocumented story about 1) his contribution to the `bomb's project' from initial stages, and another 2) by alluding to IBM not able to sell Iraq up to date technology.
On page 141 he refers to IBM "couldn't sell us their new mainframe because of the export controls."
The truth of the matter is that the Arab Boycott Office had narrated a statement, called the `negative' (or Nasty) clause, to the effect that `carriers and ships carrying goods destined to and/or from the Arab Countries, should NOT pass through or deal with Israeli ports".
The Boycott Clause (stereotyped as is) was to be mentioned on the Bills of Lading and on all related shipping documents.
IBM had to comply with the USA anti Boycott regulations that did not accept such `negative' statements.

    4 out of 5 stars A well-written memoir..........2005-10-28

Most physicists lead hum-drum lives, but not if they were born in Iraq. Hamza studied in American graduate schools, and was summoned back to teach in Iraq as a way of paying off his university debts. When invited in 1972 to join the nascent Iraqi nuclear effort, Hamza did so with some enthusiasm, thinking this would be a wonderful professional challenge and not taking seriously the prospect of an actual bomb. In addition to Hamza's talent as a scientist and scholar, his finely-tuned ability to stay out of trouble quickly became apparent and he began a long march through the bureaucracy. By 1981, he was working directly for Saddam Husayn and by 1987 he served as director general of the Nuclear Weapon Program. This high stature inevitably brought the scientist head-turning benefits - a high salary, travel to the West, fancy cars, even a residence located within Saddam Husayn's presidential compound. "All that loot was softening me up, I don't deny it," Hamza admits. With time, however, an absorbing intellectual venture turned into a descent into Stalinist hell. Finally, Hamza fully woke to his situation ("I had sold out for a Mercedes") and in 1994 managed to escape from Iraq, settling a year later in the United States.

Although Saddam's Bombmaker is a well-written memoir (kudos to co-author Stein), it contains important information on two quite distinct topics of current interest: life at the highest levels of Iraqi regime and the inner workings of the Iraqi nuclear weapons project. It is hard to say which is scarier. Life in Saddam's court is morbidly fascinating. We learn about his paranoia about germs, his taste for virgins, and his personal penchant for brutality. As for the nukes, Hamza shows how, after an initial period (1972-81) of heavy dependence on imported technology, the Iraqis rethought their program, put twenty-five times more resources in it, and built "a crude, one-and-a-half ton nuclear device" by 1990.

5 out of 5 stars Eye-opening and informative book. Easy to smuggle past the UN.......2005-07-15

This is an excellent book and eye-opener based on the first hand account of the scientist that worked on Saddam's nuclear bomb program. It is very insightful on Saddam's personality in how he rules through fear, punishes and then rewards to try to regain loyalty.

The most eye-opening is how the Iraq government circumvented the UN embargo after the 1990 Gulf War. It is also disappointing on reading how ineffective the UN inspection program was and how Saddam was able to hide his developmental programs.

The author first starts his story attempting to escape Iraq alone, in the hopes of later being able to find a way to save his family from Saddam's regime. The author later describes the major events that occurred and provides his view on what happened and how the lives of not only the scientists, but also those of the average Iraq citizen were affected.

An outstanding book that was published in 2000 and was worth every penny spent buying it, and every second spent reading it.

        3 out of 5 stars o.k. book.......2007-08-16

This book is good for those who want to hear stories about body building from the 60's era. It does give stories of The Oak, but I wish it covered more of the 70's era, like Pumping Iron.

        5 out of 5 stars OLD SCHOOL!.......2006-12-12

If you're a newcomer to bodybuilding and all you know is what you read in "Flex" or "Muscular Development", you need this book.

Set in the laidback style of the 60's and early 70's, Tyler shows us what it was like to be on Muscle Beach, or Gold's Gym (not the spas they have now). Written in the easygoing prose of the time, it does a great job of transporting you back to that time and place, even if you've never been there (like me).

You won't find the latest workout tips here. Instead you are whisked away to the culture and place where bodybuilding first hit the big time in the USA. No six figure paychecks here, just hard work and hard iron.

At 48, I'm constantly on the lookout for books and videos to keep me motivated for daily workouts. "West Coast Bodybuilding Scene" fits the bill from every angle.

5 out of 5 stars Wanna be Inspired?.......2006-06-04

This wonderful book gives a backstage pass to the life and times of some of bodybuilding's greats! Just to name a few, we have Arnold Schwarzenegger, Dave Draper, Franco Columbo, and Mike Katz. Pages of beautiful photography accompany this explicitly written novel, one of my all time favorites. Dick has the unique ability to take you back in time, show you the real men of muscle, and give a bird's eye view of what their lives were really like on a daily basis. Lighthearted humor and truthfulism is expressed throughout. This book is enlightening, inspiring, and motivational. This is the genuine article, a definite keeper. Special thanks to my great friend Karen DeCoster for giving me this, the best birthday present ever.

5 out of 5 stars Old School at it's Best!.......2005-04-18

Dave Draper & Dick Tyler hit it on the head with this blast from the past of old school training. Awesome book on the golden era of Bodybuilding.

        5 out of 5 stars A Great Cookbook.......2004-03-24

I love this cookbook and am mystified by the negative review. The recipe instructions are easy to follow and the results are delicious, healthy dishes. This book has helped me to focus on all the wonderful foods I can have on a low glycemic diet, and I no longer feel deprived of great tasting foods. Even better, I no longer crave sweets after following the author's easy-to-understand advice. In fact, many sweetened foods now taste unpleasantly sweet to me. In addition, my triglycerides and cholesterol are down and I feel better than I have in years.

The whole family can enjoy and benefit from these recipes without feeling they are on a "diet". No need to cook separate dishes for yourself. Even my daughter, who is in college and suffers from PCOS, has learned to choose her foods more carefully by reading the first part of this book. She is losing weight and received improved results from her last blood tests.

I like the variety of recipes, from appetizers to desserts. The meat recipes are interesting and varied, and every one I have tried has been delicious. The whole wheat cheese bread is especially good - better than other whole wheat bread recipes I have tried. I also love both the cheese and nut pastry recipes that make a super substitute for pastry with refined flour.I highly recommend this cookbook. This cookbook doesn't sit on my shelf. I actually use it!

        5 out of 5 stars A Helpful Cookbook & Guide.......2004-03-09

This well-organized cookbook has been very helpful to me. I have owned this book for nearly a year, and I still use it fairly often. It contains great recipes using ingredients I can find easily in local grocery and health food stores. My family enjoys the dishes without feeling deprived, and we have all lost weight.

I had no idea as to how to begin making the changes to a low carb lifestyle. This book has guided me in making healthy changes in my diet and that of my family with advise, a variety of recipes, from breads to entrees to desserts. We are now cooking with whole grains, more fiber and healthier carbs and better understand the importance of making low glycemic food choices. Unlike a previous reviewer, I know how tricky it is to substitute whole grains for white flour. Whole grains are more nutrient rich than the refined flours, and many of the recipes in this cookbook have added fiber like oat and wheat bran. Although alternative sweeteners can often be substituted for sugar to achieve the same sweetness, the resulting dish can be a disappointment. This book contains recipes that combine sweeteners like granular alternatives, fructose, and agave, maintaining good taste and a decent texture in the recipes. I appreciate having recipes where the glitches have been worked out of this time-consuming substitution process.

The Shake Off the Sugar Cookbook has helped me to focus on the amount of fiber that is in the foods I choose. The simplified, straightforward suggestions for following a low glycemic diet, as well as the handy glycemic index of carbs, is also a nice resource to keep in the kitchen. Each recipe has nutrition counts, even food exchanges for diabetics. I highly recommend this book.

        1 out of 5 stars Don't bother.......2004-03-05

This book seemed promising. It was in fact very disappointing. The glycemic index chart is one column down the center of one page and halfway down a second. There is more comprehensive information on the glycemic index available on the internet.

There are a few pages of shopping information which really didn't teach me anything.

Her favorite substitute for sugar is Splenda. You don't need a cookbook for that. The substitution ratios are on the back of the Splenda box last time I looked. I was disappointed in this aspect of the book. It seemed lazy. I was expecting something healthier and more creative than just substituting the newest chemical for sugar.

As far as recipes go I have the most trouble finding healthy alternatives for sugar in desserts, cookies, quick breads, puddings. There wasn't a lot in this book to help with that. Beside the rather lame advice to use whole wheat flour in place of white flour (they cause almost the same glycemic reaction) she didn't offer much. The recipes that make up most of this book were for things that don't contain much in the way of sugar to begin with. If you substitute the flour and Splenda there wasn't much difference between her recipes and anyone elses. Besides, how much trouble do you have with the sugar content of your Veal Piccata?

Save your money and skip this book. You can find more and better information just from surfing the internet.

5 out of 5 stars A Cookbook You Will Use.......2003-03-29

After using the wonderful recipes on the website, I decided to order the Shake Off the Sugar Cookbook. I like the larger size of the book, which makes it easy to read while using it in the kitchen. This book includes many delicious everyday recipes, but also contains recipes for entertaining. You can have a lovely dinner party using this book, and every guest would enjoy their meal. The yummy recipes often use whole grains, healthy fats and are formulated with extra fiber. It is also nice to have the glycemic index handy, along with all the other helpful information about how to follow a nutritious low glycemic or low carbohydrate diet. Some of the tips and advice are written as lists, making them easy to read and understand. I highly recommend this cookbook for anyone wanting to improve his or her diet.

This medical dictionary provides simple definitions on key

                - a virus is incapable of growth beyond living cells
                - bacterium multiply by cellular division

The volume contains the human anatomy in full color pictures.
For instance, the following parts are depicted:
                - skull
                - head and neck
                - musculature
                - cerebral hemispheres
                - disc anatomy
                - heart anatomy

This medical dictionary is perfect for the science student
in your house. In addition, the book will complement the
existing personal library of medicinal acquisitions.

                5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-03-10

A great resource, I recommend the CD version for saving a lot of time and effort ... only if you can have a computer on while you're studying.

5 out of 5 stars Must have Doctors.......2004-03-05

As both doctor and founder of a EchoScribe Inc, a leading internet based medical transcription company, (www.echoscribe.com) I must recomend Stedmans as the dictionary that all physicians must own. There is also the PDA version that is also a good carry. It not only provides a quick reference, but in writing medical letters, and transcribing documents, this book is a "medical must have."

5 out of 5 stars The most useful dictionary in ur office.......2003-05-22

I have been using this great dictionary since I joined medical school. Even now as a doctor, I still use it when I'm stuck with a meaning of a medical word. Features include:

                - Numerous colored illustrations including ADAM Anatomical Art, new diagnostic plates e.g. imaging and clinical and microscopic plates.
                - Common medical abbreviations.
                - Highly organized vocabularies.
                - Highly organized entries and cross-references.
                - Special reference to medical eponyms.
                - Shows the difference between British and American spellings.
                - Pronunciation key.
                - Easy & simple Wordfinder.
                - Genus Finder.
                - A-Z vocabularies.
                - Origins of the medical words e.g. Latin, Greek etc. which attracts me for the most ! Learning the origins of the medical words can be a boon to learning medical language. It makes remembering medical terms easier.
                - Appendices including: Table of elements & their atomic weights, Comparative temperature scales, Temperature equivalents, Weights & measures, Symbols, Laboratory reference range values, Blood groups, Diagnosis related groups, Certified Regional Poison Control Centers, CDC Universal Precautions, AIDS - resources (By State), AIDS Hotlines (By State), and AIDS education & training centers (By region).
                - 27th Edition comes in 2098 pages, and was published by Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins company (great company by the way!), 2000.

I wish there could be Stedman's Dictionary on PDA handhelds (e.g. Palm) in the future.
I strongly advise medical students and other health care workers to use this invaluable dictionary. 10/10

                  Book Description

This volume contains six works written by the great fourteenth-century mystic, the anonymous author of The Cloud of Unknowing. Presented here are: "The Pursuit of Wisdom" (the author's translation of Richard of St. Victor's treatise "Benjamin Minor"), his translation of Pseudo-Dionysius' mystical theology entitled "Denis' Hidden Theology," his free development of St. Bernard's homilies "The Discernment of Spirits," and the treatises "The Assessment of Inward Stirrings," "A Letter on Prayer," and "A Letter of Private Direction" often entitled The Book of Privy Counseling.

In his masterly preface, George A. Maloney states that Ut is in the burning love of the author for Jesus Christ as indwelling and risen that techniques are seen always as subservient to the essential Christian teaching of mystical union with Christ and through him with the Indwelling Trinity. The fruit of such 'darkness' spirituality is seen as an outward movement toward active service on behalf on other human beings to co-create a better world through a loving synergy with the indwelling Trinity."

5 out of 5 stars Good second installment from the Cloud author.......2006-11-17

This edition of the Classics of Western Spirituality series includes several works attributed to the writer of the cloud of unknowing. These include Counsels on Private Direction, a Direction on Prayer, a translation of Dionysius the Aeropagite's 'Mystical Theology', a work on Discerning Spirits and other short treatises on the contemplative life.

As with the Cloud of Unknowing, the short works are written to help guide young contemplatives through the process of knowing God through the mystical process of 'letting go' of all concepts and images of God, the classic 'via negativa' way of mystical theology. The Pursuit of Wisdom especially is a sequel to the Cloud, designed for the more advanced contemplation of God after the steps outlined in the Cloud have been mastered.

The author retains the same sense of balance and sensibility as he did in the cloud, and these works only reinforce his well earned reputation as one of the finest writers on contemplative spirituality in the Catholic tradition.

This edition includes some excellent notes and also an introduction to the author's thought and influences, and seperate introductions to each work.

5 out of 5 stars great reference book.......1999-04-26

Maurer has provided all van Gogh and Gauguin scholars a wonderful book to aid them in their studies. It provides fabulous photos of works and she does an excellent job of comparing them. She even has a few paintings that have up until now not been photographed in color. A good study of these great artists and their struggles for original expression and spirituality. Recommended for any scholar.

                  Book Description

Twelve hours after Pearl Harbor, Clark Field in the Philippines was attacked by Japanese aircraft. Among the survivors was Private Victor L. Mapes, who spent the next three years fleeing from and then being imprisoned by the Japanese military machine. When the tide of battle in the Pacific turned against the Japanese, Mapes experienced more harrowing conditions than before. After his unmarked prison ship was torpedoed by an American submarine, the wounded author struggled in the water against the elements and the enemy, as the Japanese tried to kill the escaping POWs.

Mapes' memoir chronicles a gruelling three-year ordeal that was punctuated by strange and often amusing encounters with fellow Americans, Japanese, Filipinos, and the fierce Moros of Mindanao Island. The memoir includes photographs and maps, as well as a bibliography and index.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible story........2003-10-02

This book told an incredible story of the treatment Vic Mapes received while a POW. It made me appreciate even more the people who serve and protect our country. I was fortunate enough to meet Vic while he was living at the Soldiers Home in DC. I also attended his funeral after he passed away. This memoir preserves the memory of a real life action hero. I would recommend it to everyone.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Man has now left the world of the living........2003-08-28

I have known Victor Mapes all my life. He is my Grandfathers brother. Until reading this book I had no idea of the events he had witnessed. It was very enlightening. Victor expired the evening of Tuesday August 12, 2003 at the Old Soldiers home in Washington, D.C. He was interred at Arlington Cemetery on September 3rd, 2003. We will all miss him very much.
