I just recently ran across this book, not having been aware of its existence. It took awhile for me to get through it, because it was filled with so many riveting stories, and each story is such a teaching. I was assigned this book in an East/West compartive medical class for College, and everybody loved it not just as a literary work but guide to life. Lown shares an ability with Dr. Andrew Weil in that his compassionate and balanced philosophies on life and medicine are backed up and validated by hisscientific knowledge. This book is just as much official text as it is commentary. Most anyone with an interest or passion in medicine or the healing arts would find enrichment from "The Lost Art of Healing."

Helping physicians recapture their focus.......2001-07-26

I bought a copy for myself, and now I am trying to give a copy to everybody I know who is involved in patient care. Most of us went into the medical field with noble aspirations to take care of others and in doing so, to grow ourselves as human beings. The process of going through a medical education debases in many respects our initial aspirations. I read this book and found myself recentered. Dr. Lown approaches medicine as an opportunity to glean from the people for whom he cares. The book is filled with anecdotes gathered from decades of doctoring. The stories lead the reader along the same journey that the author has taken in coming to a sense of himself as a healer. The characters whom have filled his life are interesting and the story of Dr. Lown's personal journey from medical student, to researcher to teacher and master clinician, is fascinating. I highly recommend this book. It has changed the way that I approach my work and given me a zest for opportunities to grow in this profession.

An Inspirational work for Aspiring Medical Students.......2000-10-27

In a profession dominated increasingly by science and technology, it is heartening to hear a courageous voice who spoke forcefully and emphatically against the dehumanization of medicine and for the urgent need to return to the traditional ethos of medicine. This coming no less from a physician of Dr Lown's stature and credentials, a technological wizard who had given the world the first cardioverter and DC defribillator. and yet managed to stay aloof and above the lure of medical scientific and technical sophistry which had captured the awe and fantasy of many of today's medical students and doctors alike. Debunking the myth of the omnipotence of clinical medicine, Dr Lown sought to reconcile the divide between the art and science of medicine, advocating a more humane approach towards the management of patients. He is both a philosopher and a healer, equipped with an open mind and divergent mindset extending beyond the normal confines of medical practice. Outstanding medical humanism.......2000-07-04

This is an incredible book. Written by the cardiologist who helped bring us DC cardioversion, and lidocaine for arrhythmias, it surprisingly focuses on the human aspects of medicine.

He makes several critical points: the most important task for us as physicians is to first listen to our patients. He encourages us to make our diagnoses and prognoses on the basis of careful history taking and examination, rather than by laboratory testing. He also exhorts us to take the responsibility of appropriately reassuring and encouraging our patients, rather than just always hedging our bets to cover our malpractice worries.

The book is very well written and edited, and contains dozens of fascinating doctor/patient vignettes. He explores the boundaries of the patient/doctor relationship, and is well aware of the times it leads him astray.

He is not afraid to interject his personal religious philosophy (as an agnostic from a Jewish background) but respects those with other opinions.

This text contains far more valuable information for physicians than any biochemistry or histology text. Hopefully wise Deans will make it required reading for their medical school

A fun book!.......2007-08-23

I am on a cupcake kick right now; I love making them for my kids' schools, and for my family and friends. This book has so many great recipes it was hard to pick which one to make first. But I opted for the Pina Colada cupcakes, and they were absolutely delicious. This is the first time I made cupcakes from scratch, and it's a huge difference in taste and texture.

I highly recommend this book if you love to bake.

I was looking forward to receiving this book and must say that I have been satisfied with my purchase. So far, the recipes are tasty but the decorating instructions are quite vague. I also don't like that the recipe and decorating instructions are not alongside the picture. (You need to find the picture within like 15 pages of the book or use the index) But overall, very nice book.

Doesn't live up to the hype.......2007-07-29

I bought this book based on the positive reviews and was disappointed. The pictures include sloppy looking decorations that appear to be done by a child instead of a professional baker - so consequesntly they were not that enticing to me. I have other cupcakes books that offer are more polished presentation. I made the carrot cake cupcakes and found them to lack flavor - they were not light and cake-like and were somewhat bland. One major drawback - and my biggest complant about this book is that the recipes do not have an amount or expected yield - how frustrating to make a batch of cupcakes and only get 12! You'll be much happier picking another cupcake book - either Cupcakes: From the Cake Mix Doctor or Cupcakes!

All the recipes are accompanied by lovely pictures of the cupcakes. I love the cupcake decoration ideas in this book, it's not the usual thick, high creamy frosting that you won't eat, instead, the cupcakes are decorated with yummy toppings which are also nice to look at!

Had this book and have tried some of the recipes. Love the Black bottom cupcake and mousse cupcake recipes and the decoration is quite easy to follow. It's just that I found the icing is a little bit too sweet to my liking, so I have to improvise a little bit. Generally love this book.

What a Bargain!.......2003-11-18

I have had a blast knitting Christmas stockings for the whole family with this book. The great thing is, with one book, you have almost unlimited patterns available (much cheaper than buying a kit or a pattern for each stocking!), and yet everyone can choose a pattern that expresses his or her individuality. My husband chose the simple "Rustic Lodge" stocking, while I wanted the more challenging "Lace Brocade." And with the mix-and-match stocking, you really could have endless possibilities. The instructions were clear, although even when you use the exact yarn and needles described, check your gauge (you can't be off when you're knitting on a circular needle!).

One bonus about this book: almost every pattern has a slightly different way to turn a heel (and none of them are done with seams -- they're all knit in the round like real socks). If you have ambitions about being a sock knitter, this is an excellent place to start, since you can practice the techniques without the sock ever having to be comfortable enough to wear!

Great Stocking Patterns.......2003-10-09

I loved this book much like it's counter parts, Knit Mittens and Knit Hats. I have made 6 stockings so far and intend to knit more. The patterns are explicit enough for the novice knitter. However there are patterns for the experienced knitter as well. I enjoy the shape of these books (they take me back to my childhood). I highly recommend this book. The "elves" have done well with this one. Merry Christmas!

Required reading for parents.......2000-10-24

After reading Parents Are Teachers, Too, I'm convinced that the first two chapters should be required reading for all parents. The author, Claudia Jones, touches on some of the most important aspects of being a parent. The roles of the parent as an educator, and the influence parents have on the development of their child's self-esteem. I can easily recall all of the social influences that constantly barraged my self-esteem while growing up. I can also recall how my parents never gave up encouraging me. Through their teaching, love, realistic expectations and trust, I gained confidence in my abilities and myself. Claudia explains how teaching your children is not only fundamental to parenting, but also develops trust, models appropriate behavior, assists in closer bonding between parent and child, and creates true quality time.

Claudia's approach is both practical and informative. She has created a book that is in reality, a reference for the first six years. The activities are easy to understand and perform. For most activities, the only materials needed are a parent, a child, some patience, some encouragement, some love, and some time. I was pleased that the book also included educational components, such as the Stages of Learning (by Jean Piaget) and Alternatives to Television.

Every parent wants their kids to grow up smart. This book gives helpful ideas that can help parents educate their children without them realizing it. For example: you see a dog, you tell your child it is a red dog, if your child still seems interested, continue to tell them it is an Irish Setter... when they lose interest stop giving more detail. I have read this book 3 times, and strive to read it once a year because I pick up helpful tricks for the next level of learning each time.

menus in food chapter would have you drinking six different kinds of fruit juice in a week. I open one or two containers at a time. The man who saves money on taxes by flying to Oregon and driving home a new car every couple of years is breaking the law. I think hiring a teenager to climb up and prune trees might leave you open to a lawsuit if he fell out of the tree onto the pruning shears.

This bibliography enhances the repertoire of the violinist by providing convenient access to a "new" solo recital, concerto, and chamber music literature: the music of women composers. While other source books exist in which some of this information could be found, it is often incomplete or in such abundance that selection is difficult. This well-organized bibliography will not only simplify the process of obtaining such information, but it represents a valuable contribution to the relatively new study of the musical compositions of women. Violin Music by Women Composers is divided into three main sections: Biographies, Music, and Discography. Preceding these is a general alphabetical index to all the composers included in the work, with reference to information on them contained in the three main sections following. The Biographies section is divided among five eras beginning with Baroque and concluding with Twentieth Century International. The second section of the book, Music, is organized in twelve genre categories in which composers are entered alphabetically along with the titles of their compositions. Wherever possible, information is provided on date of composition, publisher and/or source, and duration; often with additional comments included. Library sources are given for manuscripts and for published music that is out of print; otherwise, a current publisher is listed. The Discography section organizes recorded works alphabetically by composer, then alphabetically by title. This section also includes a directory of recording companies. The volume concludes with a bibliography and references. Violin Music by Women Composers is a unique, up-to-date, and thoughtfully organized resource.
