Good synopsis.......2005-03-01
This book is largely fact based description of Simon Bolivar's military and political exploits. While the authors' writing style is a bit disjointed at times, they reveal few biases in their writings. They obviously respect Bolivar's strengths but don't ignore his flaws and their occasional dry wit is a welcome addition. A small minus are the maps, they tended not be very detailed, so the reader is left wondering the location of some events. However, that isn't enough to drop the evaluation.
The story itself seems to be well-researched. It has one flaw that plagues many military histories, perhaps by necessity, of focusing too much on the exploits of the generals rather than the troops who do the fighting. On the whole, this book certainly leaves the reader with a good overall description of the life of Simon Bolivar and the era in which he lived.
Book Description
Subtle is the Lord is widely recognized as the definitive scientific biography of Albert Einstein. The late Abraham Pais was a distinguished physicist turned historian who knew Einstein both professionally and personally in the last years of his life. His biography combines a profound understanding of Einstein's work with personal recollections from their years of acquaintance, illuminating the man through the development of his scientific thought. Pais examines the formulation of Einstein's theories of relativity, his work on Brownian motion, and his response to quantum theory with authority and precision. The profound transformation Einstein's ideas effected on the physics of the turn of the century is here laid out for the serious reader. Pais also fills many gaps in what we know of Einstein's life - his interest in philosophy, his concern with Jewish destiny, and his opinions of great figures from Newton to Freud. This remarkable volume, written by a physicist who mingled in Einstein's scientific circle, forms a timeless and classic biography of the towering figure of twentieth-century science.

Brilliant.......2006-07-03
The science...the physics is there for those who really want to know. There are no shortcuts or dumming it down. But the heart and the soul is also there of this truly brilliant mind. Over the years I've read this book several times, in fact, have had to order it three times, because every time I loan it to someone, it is never returned to me (I guess they liked it too.)
A scientific biography for physicists.......2006-04-17
I have really enjoyed reading A. Pais' biography of Einstein. The book is a very detailed scientific biography. And I would like to stress this point: if you are looking for anecdotes or gossips this is not your book. The main goal of the author is to expose the ideas and scientific achievements of Einstein, explaining in detail his theories. This is a taugh book for someone without a physics background, because Pais has written a book on the physics of the last century, with a detailed account of the origin and development of relativity and quantum theories. And it uses all the mathematical concepts physicists are familiar with.
Otherwise, this is the best biography of Einstein I have read.
A beautiful and challenging book !.......2005-08-29
This is a beautifully written book. I have been intrigued by the personality of Albert Einstein since my childhood (when I saw a postage stamp with his portrait and the famous equation "E=mc^2"), and I always wanted to know what exactly has made him so famous. During my school years I loved to read books about physics, and always enjoyed lessons of physics in school. By that time I thought that I have really good grasp of physics, but still it seemed strange to me why, when the special theory of relativity was explained well enough in many accessible books, the general theory was only mentioned as "the greatest achievement of human mind", but it was never explained in detail, only some of its consequences, like the precession of Mercury's orbit or starlight bending by the Sun, were described, but nobody explained from where these 43" or 1,75" came from ! When in 1989 I bought this book, I enjoyed reading about the details of Einstein's biography, but I was quite shocked that most of the equations in the part about the general relativity were completely beyond my understanding. This fact had been irritating me for a number of years, until in 2002 I have decided to take the plunge and try to learn the general relativity properly. This has been a tough going and took almost two years, but by the end I could really understand what the terms, like the metric tensor, Christoffel symbols or R^i_jkl do really mean, or why R_ij-(1/2)*g_ij*R=k*T_ij, and I was also absolutely stunned by the beauty of this theory. This prompted me not only to read lots of other books about the relativity (MTW, Weinberg, Wald, Hawking & Ellis and many others), but also to learn the classical electrodynamics, quantum mechanics, and now I'm trying to learn the quantum field theory - all this thanks to this excellent book !
Excellent book for scientists, slightly less for others........2001-12-24
This book is a very good *scientific* biography of Einstein. This is both its strength and weakness. It is a strength because the author is clearly very knowledgeable about the subject, and therefore I couldn't think of a better book than this one. However, to appreciate the ins and outs of the scientific work of Einstein, you need to be a scientist yourself, or at least be very interested in the subject, because Pais does not avoid technical discussions. Not at all.
Therefore, for people without knowledge on this level, the book is not so accessible (I think), which may lead to disappointments. However, for this group of readers there is also good news: the author has organized the book into two interwoven 'sections': a part that is purely biographical and contains no technical discussions, and a technical part. The two parts are easily recognizable in the table of contents. This makes the book interesting and useful for a broad public.
Summarizing: this high quality book makes no light reading, but it is worth the effort, and the money.
Subtle is the Lord...but malicious He is not.........2001-07-29
that is what Einstein had to say, when in 1921 he was confronted with rumours that a non-zero aether drift had been discovered by Dayton Miller, a one-time junior of Albert Michaelson. When asked what he meant by this, he remarked "Nature hides her secrets because of her essential loftiness, but not by means of ruse". He is also said to have opined that he had "not for a moment taken [Miller's results] seriously". That was the kind of faith that Albert Einstein had in the laws of Nature that he discovered...a deep faith not capable of rational foundation..
Albert Einstein...the man...the philosopher...the scientist...the physicist...the humanist...the legend...so much has already been written about this one extraordinary human being, that you can be forgiven for grimacing when you see this book and thinking, 'oh, no ! not another one in this never-ending craze'...but think again...this is THE definitive scientific biography of Herr Professor Einstein, coming as it is from a physicist who was close to this great man towards the end of his life. Abraham Pais does a superb job of presenting the state of physics before Einstein, how he changed that and how it has evolved since his times. Science was Einstein's life, his devotion, his refuge, and his source of detachment...Science was his religion...In order to understand the man, then, it is necessary to follow his scientific ways of thinking and doing...and that is what the book precisely does...
One more thing...this is not a layman's book...if you have only a little idea of physics, and are averse to mathematical details, then look elsewhere...this is not for you...but if you have that 'holy curiosity' and 'wonderment of the spectacle that is science', with loads of perseverance, this book does an excellent job of satisfying that quest...it can inspire you to seek greater heights of understanding...(there are tons of references to other more detailed texts)...in the end, you will have had but just a glimpse of Einstein's oeuvre. Thank you.

Excellent Guide.......2007-03-08
I have Parkinson's, and this is the most comprehensive, up-to-date book on the subject I've seen. If you are buying one book on this topic, this is the book to get.
Must have.......2004-09-21
If you have PD or care for someone or know someone with it you will find this book helpful in any of those situations. I learned many things from this book. Including that some things my husband, who has early onset PD, was going through that turned out were symptoms and not just random events. I thank those that wrote this for helping me care for him and being informed. Also, they section on young onset PD really helped because i was beginning to feel he had intermediate PD when really it was signs and symptoms from his Y.O.P.D. It lifted a heavy weight knowing he wasn't that far into the disease (intermediate stage). I was able to rely many things to his nuerologist that he was experiencing based upon my reading so he can get better care. Thank you.
Parkinson's Disease: A Complete Guide for Patients and Famil.......2004-05-03
EXCELLENT resource book !!! I am back ordering a second copy for our family to share around.... gives excellent, detailed information on both the physical side of the disease and the side-effects of the medications... easy read... very comprehensive... I recommend HIGHLY !!
Parkinson's Disease.......2002-04-20
The author of this book did a great job in explaining what Parkinson's Disease is and giving information for the patient and the caregiver. I am a dental hygienist and I learned just an overview of the disease in school. After having my first patient with the disease I decided to learn more about it. I learned alot from this book that I should of already known for my patient. The book tells you the symptoms and the side effects of the disease and advice on drug therapy, diet, and exercise. Some people don't even know that they have the disease for a couple of months or even years. They think it is just old age or arthritis. The book also states what kind of medical advice to seek.
I have never met a patient with Parkinson's Disease until a couple of months ago. I didn't know what to expect. When the patient walked in I was shocked. She looked normal and wasn't shaking. She was the sweetest patient I had met. She explained to me her life and how she lives with the disease. She said that she sometimes gets embarrased to be seen in public when she has her tremors because she thinks that everyone is staring at her. But she said she is the same person as all of us. She just has to take medication and she gets tired alot more than you and me. When I was cleaning her teeth she only had mild tremors so it wasn't that difficult to work on her. But one day I will probably get a patient who has severe tremors but I am ready thanks to this book in guiding me with the knowledge of what I needed to know. I think that if you know someone who has Parkinson's disease or if you would like to learn more about the disease buy this book and you will be filled with all the information you need to know about Parkinson's disease.
Good Information.......2002-02-13
Never having had any experience or knowledge on the basis of this disease, I got the book to help me understand my father's disease. I have gotten a fuller understanding of the causes of the disease, the symptoms, the treatments (and making decisions regarding the selections of the treatments), and the progression of the disease. I feel much better informed and feel I can support my father better because of it. It was definitely written to help support the patient and family supporting that patient.

Book Description
Copeland Marks deserves highest honors for his boldness in codifying the exotic cuisines of the world for Western cooks.--Craig Claiborne
Customer Reviews:
a very good and unique book.......2004-01-30
One of the few books available concerning burmese cuisine this book is definitly informative, and useful as a key to burmese flavour combinations and palate. I have had this book for over 15 years (I recommend page 103.. labour intensive but a family favourite and the only curry that my mum will clean her coffee grinder to make). True, there are no pictures, but I guess it let's you dream a bit, and it in no way detracts from the book; I mean who wants to try and make something look the way a food stylist has spent three hours on anyway? By and large the recipes are quite good and not too complicated... If there were a negative side to the book it would be that some recipes just arn't suited to western palates (even if they are authentic?), and have to be seen in the context of a multi dish meal with condiments and sauces. All in all, a facinating look at an undeservedly unknown cuisine and another lovely addition to the prolific Mr. Copeland Marks' oeuvre.
Unique and Delicious!.................2002-06-07
......this cookbook is an experience! Burmese cuisine is a marvelous blend of the cuisines of its neighbors: China, Thailand, and India, making for a collection of delicious recipes that are distinct and memorable. The authors even give a brief history of each recipe, describing the origins and modern availability of many. They also open with a history of Burma that really helps round off the experience of this cookbook.
This cookbook contains hundreds of recipes, a glossary of ingredients and a "how to make...." section to help teach those new to the cuisine how to make some of the commonly found prepared items in the recipes. I can highly recommend: Beef in Tamarind Sauce, Roast Pork and Garlic Noodles, Malay Noodle Stir-Fry, Egg Noodles (Chinese Muslim Style), Chicken and Chick Pea Curry, Chili Chicken and the Sesame Rice Dessert. This cookbook has so much more to offer that I know I will be discovering for a long time to come. Chapters include: Appetizers and Fritters, Chutneys and Condiments, Soups, Beef and Lamb, Pork, Poultry and Eggs, Fish and Seafood, Rice and Pancakes, Vegetables and Salads, Sweets, and Menus.
The only drawback I see in choosing this cookbook would be for those cooks who need pictures to prepare recipes. This cookbook does not contain any photos. Also, for those who require very Americanized versions of international cuisine, be forewarned, this cookbook contains authentic Burmese recipes! If you want a genuine experience, than look no further than this cookbook!
Tired of 'fusion'? Go to the heart of exotic cooking........2000-06-16
My copy of this book, now dog-eared and food stained, has become one of my standards when I'm looking to prepare 'not just your ordinary' generic Asian style dinner. In terms of successfully replicating these recipes I'd say it's a one spooner (four spoons being the most difficult. This assumes you have an interest in cooking and its process--and typically call cooking more than throwing together 'chicken tonight'. What makes the cuisine of Burma so interesting is how it has taken the influence of its neighbors--Thailanad, India, and China--and created flavors and tastes unique to Burma. This book represents dishes that are both authentic in their scope and fresh in their flavors. Lookin' to go native? Great buy.
Burmese cuisine brought to life........1998-01-04
It was clearly written, and rich in anthropological detail. After reading this cook book, I felt as if I could go to Burma and order with confidences from the menus there. I have prepared several recipes from this book, and all were delicious and exotic.

Customer Reviews:
Basic and not so fabulous.......2007-01-10
Unfortunately, the patterns make boxy garments without much shaping. While errors, as noted by an earlier reviewer, are problems, omissions make the book deficient, and a novice would have difficulty. The book offers interesting ideas, but I found making adjustments to the instructions was the only way to get good results.
Great Book.......2006-08-08
This book is full of great patterns for Barbie. It also really made me laugh. I am not a Barbie collector or enthusiest. I just got it to knit my daughter some pretty Barbie clothes. Each outfit has a description for it as if it were a very exspensive designer piece being bought out of a catalog. I read the whole book as a work of fiction and as a good pattern book.
Knit versus crochet........2006-08-06
I prefer the Crochet For Barbie book. Keep mindful that Barbie bodies thru the years do require slight attire fit-adjustments. Still, pattern errors in this Knit book caused me to wonder if Nicky's book success (she is Barbie's authorized needlecraft fashion maker) caused publr/mfr to seek quick profits without testing their knit-to-crochet pattern translation software. Admittedly, the fashions are all great and it is nice to finish a chic project in an eye-blink. Needlecrafters will appreciate Crochet/Knit For Barbie books patterns working up pro-style, also quickly teaching beginners cro-knit skills for human attire and accys. Experienced needlecrafters' detail modifications can result in gorgeous outfit variations. Learning your yarn-usage with their common needle sizes makes catching errors nearly automatic (mine is .5"/k and .25"/sc for sport yarn and cotton no. 5 respectively).
Little girls will want you to make everything in this book.......2006-01-22
Sweaters, afghans, swimsuits, rugs, even a dog sweater. Nicky Epstein gives you a pattern for nearly anything you might want to knit for a Barbie. Well photographed pictures are followed by clear instructions for creating the items. Some of the recommended yarns are rather exotic, but an experienced knitter may be able to substitute from yarns left over from other projects. This would be a good book to have on hand if you are a knitting Mom, Grandma or doting Auntie.
Knits for Barbie.......2005-07-21
If you like to knit and love Barbie, you can create some great little outfits with this book. Instructions are clear and the pictures are great

Icons of American Protestantism: The Art of Warner Sallman
ASIN: 086554610X |
Amazon.com
Master Painter: Warner E. Sallman is the biography of an almost unknown artist who painted one of the most famous portraits of the 20th century. If you've ever set foot in a Sunday school classroom, chances are you've seen Sallman's long-haired, saintly, glowing Head of Christ. More than 500 million prints of this portrait have been sold since they went on sale in 1941. They now grace bookmarks, calendars, Bibles, buttons, stickers, lamps, clocks, and china dishes. Jack R. Lundbom's biography of Sallman describes the artist's ascetic lifestyle, his many battles with illness, and his aversion to publicity. (Sallman never even had a public exhibition of his paintings.) It also examines the many stories of miracles and testaments of salvation that have been attributed to Sallman's work. Lundbom approaches his subject with credulity and curiosity, and comes away with a unique story about the role of art and artists in Protestant America. --Michael Joseph Gross
