I checked this book out of the library a few weeks before my daughter (now 3 months old) was born. One of these days they won't let me renew it and I'll have to break down and get my own copy! This book is packed full of valuable information. My daughter is developing very well thanks to suggested activities and toys. I'm grateful to have recommendations at my fingertips about how to help her develop in various areas and why each area of development is important. I guess I assumed helping babies and children learn the skills they need would be second nature. (Kind of like breast feeding - HA!) A friend of my grandmother's who is an administrator at a physical therapy school recommended I get a book about motor skills. I'm so glad I stumbled upon this one!

An important resource for parents of young children!.......2003-12-10

For far too long, people have believed that the mind and body are separate entitities -- and that the functions of the mind are superior to those of the body. Pediatric physical therapist Tara Losquadro Liddle helps parents see that motor development is equally as important as cognitive and social/emotional development. In fact, motor activities contribute to cognitive and social/emotional development!

As a children's movement specialist who, for 24 years, has written and spoken about the importance of movement in children's lives and education, I practically used up my highlighter as I read this book! It's easy to read and understand, and it just makes so much sense. I recommend it for all parents of children birth to age five and think it should be on every expectant parent's list of books to read.

I could't put it down. Most interesting stories of famous and popular musicians, composers, conductors,and their favorite recipies. It tells how they like to entertain and what they serve, and has many interesting photos of their parties and after-concert galas, and such. The recipies are great too.I saw this book displayed at a music school and immediately copied several recipies, and tried them. I couldn't wait to get my own copy. This one will be on my coffee table in my music studio for all my students to read. Highly recomended for both music lovers and anyone who likes good food!

Words in appreciation of culinary arts and the arts!!!
This is a very interesting cookbook which enables the reader to cook delicious recipes, and listen to great composers at the same time. The pictures of artwork from various American museums are breathtaking and cause you to want to plan a trip for art appreciation. The recipes in the cookbook are delicious, and a form of art themselves when served. The accompanying music is soothing, light in spirit, and causes recipients of the delicious culinary art to be at peace while enjoying the delectables. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in art and music appreciation, and who enjoys the art of fine eating and food preparation. Also recommended: "Afternoon Tea Serenade" and "Picnics". Also, a fine book which would go along nicely with these books is "A Trilogy of Poetry, Prose and Thoughts for the Mind, Body and Soul."

From the blurb, Mireille Johnston was born in Nice [naturellement] and educated in France and the USA. She translated the script for the classic film "The Sorrow and the Pity" - directed by Marcel Ophuls - and also hosted a superb series on regional French cooking that was shown here in Canada on TVO (TV Ontario, a publicly-funded educational network).

The witty and fun illustrations are by the inimitable Milton Glaser and Mireille Johnston includes a table of classic ingredients from the Nice district, a table of techniques and tools, and mail order sources.

This tremendous chef died in October of 2000 at the very early age of 65 and it is not well-known that she was a former aide to Senator Robert F. Kennedy. She is sorely missed but anybody who wants to savour the sights and smells of summer only has to refer to this cookbook and enjoy the memories. Very, very highly recommended and almost a necessity in any well-appointed kitchen. It superbly complements Julia Child's classic books on French cooking and is a joy to read and is admirably produced.

Fantastic cook book.......1998-10-02

I thought I'd given up on buying more cook books. I rarely follow a recipe exactly, anyway. But a friend of mine has this book and has introduced me to some of the most amazing tastes. Tonite we had pasta with walnut sauce...just walnuts ground with olive oil and garlic, I think...but MARVELOUS!

The Classical Cookbook combines carefully researched history with recipes that are interpretations of ancient Greece and Rome. Lovely combination of recipes and historical information.......2001-04-25

Excellent book for both its recipes (easy to follow with directions given for both the English and American cook) and its description of Roman life, for both the Roman commoners and the citizens of stature. If you want to have a Roman banquet, or a simple, traditional Roman meal, this is an ideal book. I especially enjoyed the well-written sections on Roman history, which perfectly integrate the recipes with what we know about the people's lives and the ingredients which were available to them. I looked at every Roman cookbook I could find, in both the USA and England, and my three favorites are: Classical Cookbook, by Dalby and Grainger, and, A Taste of Ancient Rome, by Ilaria Giacosa, and Roman Cookery, by Mark Grant. The latter two have more recipes than the first, but Classical Cookbook is a quality book with exquisite pictures, illustrations and explanations.

Intelligently written, well-illustrated, well-organized, easy to navigate, with an index and bibliography.

I highly recommend it.

This book was very enlightening to a new potential Ridgeback owner (me), and it helps new/potential owners decide if this breed is right for you. If you get this breed, you MUST be prepared as they are very smart. They remember everything (good and bad), and this book really represents their mentality. It also gives good tips for positive training.

Having been owned by a ridgeback for over 7 years, Ms. Fox was right on with her "complete pet owner's manual." I especially enjoyed the humor she used when discussing the imperative need for early training. I have always had dogs, but this is my first hound and I will always have a ridgeback. Though definately not a dog for everyone, this book educates the owner or potential owner on the cons and many pros of living with this wonderful breed.

Out of Date.......2006-03-22

As the owner of two Ridgebacks, I read this book awhile ago. I reread it recently and there are many out of date subjects. It explains that puppies born with Dermoids or Ridgeless should be put to sleep. I bought a puppy to discover that he had 3 large Dermoids. Many vets do this operation now. Dermoids surgery is anywhere from $150-500. What is the matter with a Ridgeless puppy? Nothing. At least find a good home for the puppy. Many people dont mind a ridgeless. Out dated vaccination info. I recommend Natural Health for Dogs and Cats by DR Pitcairn.

Very good book if you are geared toward showing your dog. Or if you were really interested in the the lineage of the breed in three countries. For the novice recipient of such an awesome
dog, I found it completely lacking in real world advice, save for one chapter. I guess I should have bought " ridgebacks for dummies" because this book mostly went over my head. The content was well written, though. The Authors know the breed.

A good book for a tuff breed.......2000-03-06

Ridgebacks are not easy dogs, and this book helps you understand that. Little things like explaining why your Ridgeback will retrieve a ball once or twice, but then get board unlike many popular canines is very helpful. This is a great book to help a person get to know the breed, but if you already have a Ridgeback I hope and pray that there is nothing in here that you don't already know. I have raised, trained, and have shown two Ridgebacks and I love the breed more than many other breeds I have worked with. As always the best place to learn about a dog is talking to a respected breeders, trainers, and handlers, but this book is helpful with understanding the important background of this great breed.

Not the best choice for someone researching the breed or living with their first ridgeback. The entire text needs expansion and updating; sections on training and health matters were completely lacking in any meaningful content.

This book was very complete and had lots of good information for the uneducated Rhodesian Ridgeback owner. The pictures and information were all first rate - however somewhat dated. Lots of good info on raising and breeding ridgebacks too.

Reprint of th 1988 book.......2005-08-07

This is essentially a reprint of the 1988 book with a new cover. That said, I have to admit that anyone who didn't purchase a copy of that volume at the time is indeed lucky to have the opportunity presented to them again in this book.

Kasahara jumps the student right into some very elaborate models. Most are purely delightful. I am particularly impressed with the masks and plan on making some of them in large paper for wall decore for friends this Christmas. Many of the designs are presented in other books on the subject, but Kasahara frequently goes one better or beyond. The Persian cat is probably one of the nicest models of a cat I've found.

One of the interesting things about this book is the author's marriage of origami to geometry and mathematics. The book has some of the most comprehensive discussions on the relationships of three dimensional geometric objects to one another that I've ever seen in an origami book. While I was more interested in the artist's rendering of new models and didn't get as deeply into the geometrics of the art, I have to admit, the discussions were very cogent and would be an asset to a math teacher.

Probably the most magnificent of the book's presentations is one based precisely on the above topic. The author presents an ingenious box which opens out successively into smaller boxes that create a huge tableux of fall, winter, summer and spring, complete with animals, trees, boats, mountains and houses. How better to reveal the true volume of a cube than by this means!

This is a huge volume with a large variety of subjects presented. Going from memory, there are masks, dinosaurs, animals, boxes, modular polyhedrons, and more. It would be hard for one to leaf through this book and not find at least a few models that are "must-folds".

This may not be the best book for beginners. I played around with origami a bit as a child and this is the first book I've ever bought. I've had a few problems following the more complex diagrams, but usually after a test fold (where I end up completely mangling the paper) I can re-do the project with little difficulty. There is little-to-no indication of the difficulty of models, e.g. they certainly aren't arranged by difficulty, but its simple enough to determine that a project with 30 steps will be much more difficult than a project with 8 steps.

What I find especially inspiring in this volume is the author's scant text. He communicates the history and beauty of origami in a simple manner. His passion definitely shows through. I wouldn't have expected to develop such an appreciation from one volume. Folding has become a relaxing, meditative hobby for me, and I'd recommend this volume for anyone seeking the same.

Origami Omnibus has a wide spectrum of models, so everyone can enjoy this book. I like it because it has easy models, but also hard ones that I am still working on. It has a lot of modular origami, which is one category I enjoy. This book explains how geometry and origami are alike. I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys origami.

Some of the folds are very difficult to understand, yes. However, with a little perseverence, many can be figured out. There's nothing quite like finishing an origami when you had to struggle through some difficult folds to do it. The few times a fold has me completely stymied, this book has such a wealth of material to choose from, it is always easy to set the paper aside and find another project, just as fascinating, hopefully more tractable. This book's greatest strength is its variety. In terms of subject matter, difficulty levels, and sheer number of fascinating forms, I have not yet seen a superior volume.
