Promised that he won't have to fight in combat, instead of being drafted for two years, 19-year-old John Lefter enlists for a three-year hitch in the Army Security Agency and ends up in the Korean War. At first, Lefter has a “candy ass” assignment 30 miles behind the fighting area. He spends a lot of time drinking beer, laughing, and partying. Then he is forced to face his own mortality after being assigned bunker duty in the fighting area. He breaks down after his foul-mouthed buddy is hit with burp gun fire while saving Lefter's life. In a hospital psychiatric ward, his recovery is aided dramatically by an innovative doctor and the only man he has ever hated. Back on the front line and atop the bunker celebrating just after the cease-fire, Lefter is again confronted with a shocking incident that takes him over fifty years to find closure for.

Mr. Cheek returned me in time to 1952 and 1953 parts of which
I spent in Korea. The characters were people exactly like the
ones I knew. A Novel but most of it rings very true to the times. I could not put the book down. Very fast and enjoyable

A Truly Amazing Story That Keeps You Moving.......2004-01-31

On the promise that he won't see combat, John Lefter enlists for a 3 year hitch in the Army Security Agency. I guess, since we are talking about the Army, you know what happens. He ends up in Korea. It doesn't take long until Lefter is in a bunker real close to the front lines. A lot of things happen then and most of them were not good.

Once I started Stay Safe Buddy, I had trouble putting it down. I went everywhere with Lefter. I shared a lot of his pain and hangovers. I even shared his hatred for Major Soss. This is a great tale of the way things were during the Korean conflict, or war or whatever you want to call it. Just read it!

I took the book STAY SAFE, BUDDY with me on our 2-week vacation to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and sat up late one night to read it. It was so interesting that I couldn't stop reading until I finished the entire book.

I cried a lot and laughed too. That Mewman was some crazy guy. He also was a hero. I could feel the concern when the soldiers used the phrase, "Stay safe, Buddy." The book is a very good read.

Been There, Done That.......2003-09-14

Having spent some time in Korea myself, I was utterly amazed by the author's ability to recall and describe people and situations with so much accuracy and authenticity. The book brought back a rush of memories. Most importantly, it illustrates that major projects, such as wars, consist for the most part of human relationships, sometimes significant and sometimes not, but always interesting. The author was obviously a "doggie" who knew what was going on around him. I purchased several copies for friends.

Just finished reading our book "Stay Safe, Buddy." Enjoyed it immensely. Having spent 14 months over there with 1st Weapons Company and then Chalie Company, 1st Marine Division, I could visualize the terrain as I read. My wife thought I was nuts beacause I would suddenly break out laughing in the middle of the night. I could see many of my buddies in similar circumstances.

Having been a Corpsman wht the Marines, I can visualize myself as Doc Teele except that I wouldn't know what to do as a full bird colonel.

Again, Thanks for writing the book. It made me remember.

This book is as fascinating to anyone interested in mathematics as any other mathematician's biography, with the extra asset of his life being deeply imbedded in 20th century history. While it gives a most interesting account of the French and international mathematical world during the second half of the century (especially on Bourbaki and, of course, on the distributions), it also tales the story of a "committed" (formerly trotskist) intellectual who valued his struggle for decolonization as high as his mathematical work.

Simply said. I've found several that I've liked and some that I wouldn't care to try. But for the most part, I'm looking each week to try an new one. So far I've liked everything I've tried.

Simply Too, follows the steps of the first book, Simply Colorado, with great easy recipes. This new one has more information on nutrition info for each recipe.

I have tried several of the recipes and have been delighted with them so far. I hope the Colorado Dietetic Association keeps up their good work!

Now that I am pregant, I turn to these cookbooks more and more. If you don't have, I recommend both books.

All of these "Memories Of A Lifetime" books are incredible. Not only do you have the amazing 8x8 beautifully printed images (on card stock weight paper) that are scored and usable just as they are - just pull the page out - but you also have a CD containing an image of each full page PLUS each of the individual scrap pieces that make up the collage are available to be printed by themselves.
This is one of the most usable lines of scrap and scrapbooking images I've ever come across. I've ordered about 10 separate titles of the series and I find that each is more wonderful than the next. I've not been disappointed in any of them. I just can't say enough positive things about these little books. If you received only the book - that would be worth the cost, but getting the CD makes this a purchase MORE than worth making!!

Highly Disappointing.......2007-05-22

The quantity of drawings is excellent, although some are surprisingly small. The bigger disappointment is the lack of color in the book. Prud'hon's academy drawings look lackluster on the page without the familiar blue tint of the paper. While this may be a small quibble for some, it takes a great deal away from getting the true experience of his work. The academy reproductions appear to lack detail I've seen in other books. Whether this is due to the lack of color or poor scanning I'm not sure. But the very fine detail of his chalk work is lost here.

The text is informative and well written. But it's the work you're buying the book for, and that's not nearly reproduced as well as it should have been. Overall, quite disappointing.

Powerful study of an extremely important Japanese poet........1999-11-19

This study is a model of lucidity and care. Ramirez-Christensen has gone beyond the Japanese language works that inform hers, and gives ample justification for her views of Bishop Shinkei, one of the key figures in medieval Japanese poetry. A disciple of Shotetsu, he wrote both tanka and renga, and was a teacher of Sogi in the latter. Through Sogi, he influenced Basho.

Those who love Basho will find Shinkei very much to their taste.

This work is key for a deep understanding of Japanese traditional poetics. Ramirez-Christensen is also one of our better academic translators; in her hands Shinkei's poems read as poems, not glosses.

The Wall Street Journal Book of International Investing, written by two Journal editors, is a clear, concise, and sensible guide to the ABCs of investing outside the United States. It provides solid background on international mutual funds and their cousins, closed-end country funds. For those intent on doing their own stock picking, the book explains how to buy individual foreign stocks on U.S. markets in the form of American Depository Receipts. Authors John A. Prestbo and Douglas R. Sease do a good job of outlining the special risks as well as the benefits of foreign stocks, including the risk associated with fluctuations in currency exchange rates. The book offers little in the way of specific tips, however, beyond favoring index mutual funds from Vanguard. It does wisely warn readers away from foreign bonds and from global mutual funds, which often dilute their international exposure with holdings in U.S. stocks. --Barry Mitzman

I was first introduced to Bruce through the Book, "Breaking Through the 4 Barriers to Quality. I found the book to get right to the root of the problems that every business faces. More importantly the book gave detailed solutions as to how to overcome these problems. For over a year now, Mr. Snell has been coaching our company helping to install systems to help us overcome those barriers. I think the 4 Barriers to Quality should be required reading for every business in the Country.

If these companis read Mr. Snell's book we would certainly have a much better enviorment for conducting business.

Bruce Snell lays out in a down-to-earth manner why businesses of all sizes struggle with quality production. What's more, he lays out a solution as well. You don't need a college degree in business administration to understand his simple and very appropriate concepts for business today, expmplified by his two rules: 1) Treat everyone as you wish to be treated and 2) Do what is morally and ethically correct. What could be simpler? The company for which I am a Vice-President has implemented Mr. Snell's program to do away with the informal and move to a formalized method of business and have seen large gains in just the first year. ANYONE who wants to improve company productivity at any level should make time to read (and re-read) this book!

This book is actually two books. The first is a comparatively concise biography of Healey Willan, detailing his youth, his coming to Canada, and his long tenure at St. Mary Magdalene. It is full of interesting stories which reflect Willan's personality, but is presented with a professional objectivity which makes it very credible and easy to read. The second part of the book is a very detailed study of most of Willan's works by category -- songs, piano works, symphonic works, choral pieces (motets and masses), organ works, and everything else this prolific composer wrote. It covers, at a medium level, Willan's compositional techniques and influences. At the end is a section with almost 500 musical examples which are referred to throughout the text. All in all, a very valuable and very professionally written biography and musical analysis of the "old man". I would have given it 5 stars if the biography section were longer (It's about 100 pages -- not bad, but.). Those of us who are hardcore fans want all the details of the man that we can get. Other than that, a superb book.
