(The numerical rating above is a default setting within Amazon's format. This reviewer does not employ numerical ratings.)

Captain Seymour has left us a lively and lucid account of his Civil War experiences, from a rare account of the bombardment of Fort Jackson (New Orleans) in April 1862, to later service with the 1st Louisiana brigade with the Army of Northern Virginia.

Seymour, a New Orleans newspaperman, shows a fine disregard for accuracy which sheds no glory on his profession, but editor Jones gently footnotes the narrative with the necessary corrections.

Interesting read; worthwhile.

Book Description

These essays explore the challenges Jeffe Kennedy has faced as a woman, a Westerner, a father-less daughter, a stepmother, a biologist, and a girl with hair of no specific color. From the book's opening in a cornfield, where Kennedy is searching for the twenty-five-year-old site of the plane crash that killed her father, she seems to be in constant motion. She is the feminist adolescent, ashamed to win a prize in home economics who learns to take joy in her pastry skills. She is the scientist struggling with mortality, the liberal learning to shoot a gun.

“With cheeky wisdom, Jeffe Kennedy explores the extraordinary moments that transform ordinary lives. No revelation—from the meaning of the death of a parent to being a blonde—is too big or small for this Colorado-born biologist to dissect. Her insights tell us a lot about the way lives enhanced by real convictions are formed.”—Vicki Lindner, author of Outlaw Games

“[Kennedy] writes vividly and with great clarity. Her sensitivity and empathy for other people enhances an unusually authentic ability to establish three-dimensional characterization.”—Lee Gutkind, editor, Creative Nonfiction

5 out of 5 stars Wyoming Trucks: Essays from Found Objects.......2004-10-31

This book came into my life almost accidentally, and I took my time getting it to the top of the stack. But as soon as I finished it, I wrote Jeffe Kennedy to offer my congratulations for a job superbly done. I now plan to purchase at least three more copies: one for my newlywed nephew in Colorado, because the book has such an emotional impact from a uniquely western point of view; one for my sister and brother-in-law, North Carolinians who have fallen in love with the west; one for a sister who just likes to read, and who, like Kennedy, inherited her husband's children. I list these recipients to illustrate that this book is for everyone. Yes, it's a woman's book, but only in that it was written by a woman. There's a wry voice, full of wisdom from life's lessons learned, ripe with humor and the author's ability to laugh at herself, and perhaps most important, laced with valuable information about the ecology of the region. Webster's defines ecology: The totality or pattern of relations between organisms and their environment. That's exactly what Kennedy gives us in this book...she's the organism and the many settings in her book are the environment. Buy this book. Read it and pass it on as a gift to someone you love; you'll be giving a gift of hours of pleasurable reading.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Woman's Perspective.......2004-06-23

Jeffe Kennedy has created a special window on the world. She appears to have the sharp mind of a scientist combined with the beautiful soul of a poet, and this allows her to take us by the hand and lead us to some simple truths about life and death and the world around us - truths which we might otherwise miss. Ms. Kennedy's book is an engaging and revealing journey, and I would recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars Essays for Everywoman.......2004-04-08

Wyoming Trucks, True Love, and the Weather Channel is one of those books that is difficult to categorize. It's memoir, essay, American West, magazine articles, all of that and yet not quite any of it. The title tells you how wide-ranging these pieces are, and it actually refers to only one of the essays in the collection. Even Amazon.com has had trouble pigeon-holing the book, since it appears here on a children's books page.

The strongest essays are the ones about Kennedy's family. The first piece is about visiting the site of her father's death in a plane crash twenty-five years earlier. She visits with her mother and they recall a time that Kennedy doesn't quite remember, when she was only three years old. By the end of the essay, you have a good idea of who Kennedy is.

Subsequent essays discuss her childhood, her friends, her relatives, and her long-time boyfriend. A chapter called Thanksgiving is one of the best essays, about her awkward relationships with the children of her boyfriend and with their mother, her boyfriend's ex-wife. The awkwardness comes to a head when one of the children is hospitalized and Kennedy realizes that although she has no formal or recognized relationship with the children, she feels responsibility and love for them.

For such a slim volume of essays, there's a lot to think about here.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Liberating.......2004-03-04

I could not put this book down; I literally read it in one sitting. The fresh new voice of Jeffe Kennedy will make readers laugh and cry. I especially enjoyed her descriptions of her family, lover, and tribulations of being a woman in a male-dominated profession. Jeffe is one to watch! This book of essays should only be the first in a line of fantastic books to come. My favorite chapters include "Appliances," "Girfriends," and "Home Ec."

5 out of 5 stars Wyoming, Trucks, True Love and the Weather Channel.......2004-03-02

I loved this book! What a delightful documentation of the transformation of a child into a mature woman! I particularly related to her story because she straddles two worlds--the sophisticated life in the city with art and culture, and the Wyoming West of men, trucks and being tough. My own family comes from both those worlds and I found Jeffe's book a validation of my own feelings.

Note: I submitted another review on this book about three weeks ago, but have not seen it yet, so am submitting this.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best book at the best time.......2006-12-12

I was in a bed for 9 weeks with a herniated disc. My wife found this book in the library. I happen to live in Florida and was able to use this book to keep myself somewhat active and not become a cripple because of the pain I was in on land. 15 years later I am in great shape at 50 love the water and this book, and still read in now and then to remind me of the form to use and the benifits.I need a new one becaus eits been so used.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful guide for people with physical restrictions.......2005-09-09

This guide is helpful for persons with physical limitations and provide safe non-impact exercises. It would be helpful if the guide would inform the purchaser that assistive devices would aid with the routines.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2004-02-11

The best parts of this book are the detailed photographs of all the exercises, included in both a large format (one per page) and a small format (so that you can see many exercises per page). The only thing that would make the book even better would be if the small photographs were offered separately on water-resistant material, so that you could bring 'em into the pool. I'll probably photocopy those pages, and laminate them, so that I can do that.

The book has a helpful appendix of commercial resources with products such as an in-pool exercise station, and Aqua Tunes. Some of the companies appear to have gone out of business in the 11 years since the book was first published--to be expected.

By the way, the average rating here would be 5, but one reviewer apparently forgot to add the star rating, while still offering the book a glowing review.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous! Thank goodness I found this book!.......2002-01-05

I had a devastating knee injury about five and one half months ago (the doctor stated that I may never be able to obtain my pre-injury range of motion)The traditional rehab was going very slowly and very painfully. I asked my physician if I could exercise in the water, and after his approval, I started with the workouts in this book along with my prescribed rehab. I have gained 80% of my pre-injury range of motion and on a good start with my strength and balance with VERY little pain!! My physical therapist said I started improving much more rapidly after starting the water workouts and I have already exceeded the expected post-operative range of motion. I could not have done it without the water workouts!!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for Re-hab.......2001-05-26

I got a hold of this book after 1 months of rehab from acl reconstruction. As an athlete, I wanted minimize the amount of degradation to my fitness level and strength as much as possible during my rehab. The exercises and routines are fabulous and have helped tremendously with building strength back in my leg as well as increasing my range of motion and improving my cardiovascular fitness. People at all levels of fitness and athletecism will benefit from the routines and exercises in this book.

Cookbooks

The definitive word on sumptuous Scandinavian cooking, now in paperback!

Drawing upon her rich knowledge of Scandinavian cuisine and culture, expert chef and veteran writer Beatrice Ojakangas presents a multitude of delicious yet remarkably simple recipes in this cookbook classic, available in paperback for the first time. Scandinavian Feasts features the cuisine of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland, and it includes menus made up of a bounty of appetizers, drinks, smorgasbord, meats, fish, soups, vegetables, desserts, and baked goods. Easily as engaging as the dishes themselves, each recipe comes with an introduction that explains the cultural importance of the feast and details its seasonal significance.

During the long, dark Scandinavian winter, the meals tend to be hearty and substantial. In Sweden and western Finland, a traditional Thursday lunch consists of a meal of pea soup and pancakes. A typical winter dinner might include Danish crackling roast pork with sugar-browned potatoes topped off with an irresistible ice cream cake. Christmastime gatherings, in particular, are often a chance to celebrate with a cup of hot glogg or Swedish punch. When the winter is finally over, the seemingly endless summer days are savored along with the fresh fruits and vegetables that are hard to find after the short growing season. During the white nights of Sweden and Norway, it is customary to serve a midnight supper after a concert or the theater, while a special occasion such as a baptism or anniversary might call for a feast of dill-stuffed whole salmon followed by kransekake, a beautiful towering ring cake of ground almonds.

No matter what your level of expertise as a cook or where you live, the recipes are easy to use. The ingredients commonly found in most grocery stores and a conversion chart for metric measurements is included. Scandinavian Feasts is sure to delight enthusiasts of Scandinavian culture and lovers of fine food everywhere.

Beatrice Ojakangas is the author of two dozen cookbooks, including The Great Scandinavian Baking Book (1999), also published by the University of Minnesota Press. Her articles have appeared in Bon Appétit, Gourmet, Cooking Light, Cuisine, and Redbook, and she has appeared on television's Baking with Julia Child and Martha Stewart's Living. She lives in Duluth, Minnesota.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Resource for Culinary Culture of Scandinavia.......2006-12-30

This book is filled with great recipes. One of our favorites is the spice rye bread recipe that takes rye bread and infuses it with essence of orange and molasses.

The book is not laid out traditionally with one section for beverages, one for appetizers, one for main dishes etc. That means if you are seeking inspiration for what dessert to bring to a gathering you need to have an idea of what you are looking for and consult the index.

If you are interested in learning more about the cooking in Scandinavia as part of their culture and celebrations this is a great resource. For each season there are several menus revolving around specific celebrations. Most of the menus include drinks, appetizers, main dishes, and dessert.

So far we have enjoyed every recipe we've made!

5 out of 5 stars As always the best!.......2002-03-03

Beatrice Ojakangas proves again why she is the foremost expert on Scandinavian cooking. A great find and a good buy!

Millions of thoroughly modern knitters, including a growing number under the age of thirty-five, will applaud the fresh interpretations featured in Simple Knits with a Twist, Erika Knight's latest collection of creative designs. By matching classic stitches with other craft techniques and incorporating innovative materials like fine wire, beads, and recycled plastic with conventional yarns, Knight takes knitting beyond its traditional boundaries into new, inspired realms. Easy yet inventive, her projects bring a hip, artsy edge to items once deemed homespun. The twenty projects-which include wire napkin rings, an Aran armchair cover, a patchwork throw, and a beaded silk scarf-teach knitters how to add such creative skills as felting, patchwork, and beading to their repertoires. Each project is featured in a full-page color photo and in close-up how-to shots. For beginners with contemporary tastes and accomplished knitters interested in expanding their range, Simple Knits with a Twist presents a world of possibilities.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars not THAT pretty.......2007-06-04

BUY THIS INSTEAD: Last Minute Knitted Gifts by Joelle Hoverson. I didn't buy it at first because I had plenty of books, but time and time again, I find something super useful and lovely in it.

I looked up Simple Knits with a Twist because I wanted to sell my copy and wanted to see what the reviews looked like. I am surprised to see how many people commented that the book was attractive, but had impractical projects.

I disagree. I think the images are a little flat. I find good photography to be inspiring in itself, and good projects as well, especially with attractive materials. I find that the book lacks both of these things.

Some of the projects are kinda cute. There's a dog sweater with a bar code pattern, and knitting combined with woven fabric for a throw, and a knitted wire fruit basket, but these still failed to inspire.

I think that better photography, better styling, and fewer close up photos of balls of yarn (instead of more close-up technique images) would serve this book well.

If this were a more practical OR attractive book, I might not be so eager to unload it.

    3 out of 5 stars Beautifully-photographed inspiration.......2007-03-03

This unusual knitting book has many funky ideas like knitting with strips of plastic bags or metallic wires. The projects are beautifully-photographed in the book and the ideas are very refreshing. However, due to the high quality (or cost) of the yarn that's used in most of the patterns, the projects may not be realistic for the average knitter. Overall, this book is the "Fifth Avenue" of knitting books: beautiful and chic at an unrealistic cost.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Inspiring.......2006-03-19

For anyone who likes unusual and fine accesories this is the book! Well written and fabulous illustrations for the many inspiring projects. Beautiful in itself as a gift.

1 out of 5 stars Very pretty, Very impractical.......2005-11-13

i'm a total sucker for beautiful books, and this is certainly beautiful. i was hoping to make the ribbon slippers featured on the cover, but can't find 1/2" ribbon anywhere - and i live in a major metropolitan area! and even if i did, the 100 yards of ribbon would probably cost about $70. i doubt i'll ever make a single pattern from this one. wish i could return it.

    4 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book.......2005-10-16

This book has some truly unique and beautiful project. I particulary love the pink satin ribbon ballet like slippers, I had never thought of knitting with ribbon before I got this book and it makes a truly lovely medium. Not all of the projects in this book are usuable, but it is worth it for the unique ones that stand out.

      5 out of 5 stars a helpful how-to diet book.......2007-05-11

What I like best about Georgia Kostas's book is the abundant "how to" information, such as how to overcome barriers to exercise, how to manage eating at special occasions, how to determine the right portion of a food, etc. I can tell Georgia has had lots of experience counseling dieters because she knows what dieters want to know about how to successfully lose weight.

4 out of 5 stars cooper clinic weight loss.......2006-03-16

I have not completely finished reading this book so I only gave 4 stars, but I am finding it very helpful. I also purchased the mayo clinic book and, between the two books, I am getting a much better idea of what to eat and how to go about it. They are very similar in their concepts. I really like this book and would recommend it.

This should be on every Registered Dietitians' bookshelf!! I
would highly recommend this book to the public that requires sound information on weight loss. This book is good reading and
practical in it's approach. The book deals with strategies for
success and how to handle obstacles which is not always well covered in other weight management books. I bought her earlier book "The Balancing Act"; I didn't think that book could be outdone but this book is even better!! Sincerely, a Registered Dietitian

5 out of 5 stars The Cooper Clinic Solution to the Diet Revolution.......2002-12-20

A book for those demanding a healthy heart and a healthy lifestyle!

      5 out of 5 stars Incredible.......2002-12-12

I just received this book and haven't been able to put it down. The information is clear and concise and practical. I love this book and feel that everything I have learned about wieght loss and thought on my own have now been confirmed. This book is not gimicky. It is realistic. This book helps us put into practice what most of us already know. If you are buying the book you are already to take the next step, and this is the answer!!! On a side note, Raynelle who also recommends this book was featured in Prevention, that is where I heard of this book and she looks awesome!! I hope to do as well as she did and be healthy in the process.

Hearn is one of the few chroniclers of urban American life in the nineteenth century, and much of this material has not been widely available since the 1950s.

Lafcadio Hearn's America collects Hearn's stories of vagabonds, river people, mystics, criminals, and some of the earliest accounts available of black and ethnic urban folklife in America. He was a frequently consulted expert on America during his years in Japan, and these editorials reflect on the problems and possibilities of American life as the country entered its greatest century.

Hearn's work, which reflects an America that is less “melting pot” than a varied, spicy, and often exotic gumbo, provide essential background for the study of America's first steps away from its agrarian beginnings.

5 out of 5 stars Amateurs are better than professionals........2005-08-02

Hearn was one of the great early amateur ethnographers, and this is a revealing collection of his work, though incomplete.

        The biographical introduction is excellent.
