A Priceless Historical Asset.......2006-05-19
Gideon Welles, who served on the cabinets of Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson as Secretary of the Navy, was one of the most honest statesmen of his day. The diary provides an in-depth look at the day to day events of a nation and Cabinet during the dark days of the Civil War and Reconstruction. In the diary Mr. Welles writes opinions of many leaders of that bygone era. His opinion of Ulysses S. Grant was far from flattering. Welles was not a Radical Republican and supported Andrew Johnson throughout his impeachment trial. No Civil War library is complete without this wonderful three volume set.

"Father Neptune" brought to life.......2007-09-20
It was 34 years ago I first picked up this book and have been a fan of John Niven ever since. This book is the best in the distinguished list of Dr. Niven;s writings. Gideon Welles moves from editor to politician to powerful figure in the Lincoln administration and we follow him as fellow travelers on this voyage. This is one book well worth the price for your library.

Book Description
Who was Aleister Crowley? Magus, poet, sexual athlete, mountaineer, traitor, drug fiend, and Prophet of a New Aeon he has been described as all these things. Dubbed "The Wickedest Man in the World" by the British press, Crowley and his story have captured the imagination of occultists, rock stars including The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, who included his portrait on the cover of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band free spirits, and science fiction aficionados for decades.
Compiled from Sandy Robertson's extensive personal collection of Crowleyana, The Illustrated Beast includes a short biography, black-and-white photographs of Crowley and his contemporaries, excerpts from his writings, and commentary on the Wanderer of the Waste.
From his paradoxical childhood to his stormy involvement with The Golden Dawn, from his adventurous travels and published works to his controversial Italian Abbey and lifelong heroin addiction, this scrapbook offers readers a glimpse of the man, his works, and his lasting impact on the occult.
Customer Reviews:
MR. CROWLEY.......2002-11-20
I ran across this book while doing a search and just had to buy it as it's been many years since I've read anything by or about Crowley. When it arrived with several other books, I set it aside and promptly forgot about it. While watching Hellraiser II on DVD last week, I noticed that the Beast's picture (in Golden Dawn regalia) kept popping up at the Doctor's house and it reminded me of this book. As soon as I finished my current book, I started in on this one. It was chock full of photos, illustrations, and stories that that I'd never seen before. I enjoyed the reprinting of the rare story Big Game from his World War I era writing. I especially liked the section that showed the different guises (and disguises) of Crowley over the years. When David Bowie is mentioned later as a one of the rock stars influenced by the Beast, I wondered how much of his frequent reinventing of himself was Crowley inspired. All in all, a nice reintroduction to the Beast book for my collection. My only gripe is that none of the popular photos of Crowley are reproduced here in whole except for their use in commercial endeavors (magazine and album covers) nor is the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper album cover. A minor quibble about an excellent book on "The Wickedest Man In The World". 'Do What Thou Wilt Shall Be The Whole Of The Law'.

Funny, but could lead to salmonella.......2006-01-18
This is a lightweight, funny read for the totally clueless male. Watch out, however, for the Tiramisu recipe which calls for using raw egg yolks. The proper method is to combine the liquor, sugar and egg yolks and wisk them in a double boiler until the sauce thickens (170 degrees), killing any bacteria and fluffing up the mixture. Just a tip to help you get your just des[s]erts.
For complete idiots.......2005-10-22
This book is a stinker, a really lame effort. The audience is apparently newly married midwestern ex-frat boys. Written in the breezy jocular tone of such junky magazines as GQ and Details. Extremely shallow. Wallows in the stereotype of men as beer-swilling, farting, football-loving oafs; overworks the tired concept of "the war between the sexes." If you like this you are 100% normal and probably watch lots of television.
hilarious & helpful.......2005-09-21
My review heading pretty much sums this book up. It provides some genuinely good advice while being funny at the same time. You'll get some good tips and have a good time reading it and I think women will enjoy it too.
Finally, an Instruction Manual for Marriage!!!.......2005-09-07
After hearing the author on the Howard Stern show, I had to check out this book. I'm glad I did, as the book actually presents loads of useful ideas and tips for all of us husbands looking for that 'edge'. The book is a very easy read, and can be read cover-to-cover or individual chapters as needed. Although the book has a tongue-in-cheek veneer, this is a sincere book with useful ideas in every chapter, presented in a funny way where you find yourself saying, "I've been in that EXACT situation." No preaching or talking-down in this book...
My favorite chapter is the last one, where Boreth relates a brief story where one of his friends is in Vegas and proceeds to max out the daily limit on his ATM card...and later that day his wife is unable to buy food for their daughter...classic example of what NOT to do as a husband...he even then names the offender, Gary Lipshutz of Metuchen NJ, in hopes of shaming him out of future similar behavior.
In short, the tips in this book have enabled me to parlay my 'good husbandness' into not only an annual Vegas trip, but also an annual 4-day golf outing with the guys plus multiple random nights out during the year. In turn, I have also encouraged my wife to take a weekend trip with her mother and sister, or her friends...
Thank you Craig Boreth, for making me a more perfect husband!
Pleasing Your Woman.......2005-08-09
Since my husband irons his own shirt every morning, the title caught my attention. I've always been impressed by his ironing abilities especially if it allows me to sleep a little longer. I loved the chapter on finding the perfect gift, breakfast in bed and grocery shopping, not to mention the recipes for Crème Brûlée and making Stir-Fry.
I'll agree that men who can cook and clean are very sexy. Just tell a woman you do these things and she will probably forget all other men exist. Imagine how she will be bragging about you to her friends and relatives. There is also a chapter on how to Win Over Her Parents, Enjoy a Chick Flick and Grow the Perfect Lawn. Each task has a difficulty rating and a reward rating.
The main concept in this book seems to be about showing a woman you care about making her life a little less stressful and much more romantic. Even the smallest effort will not go unnoticed and I can almost guarantee a woman will be most appreciative and plan romantic situations to reward such kindness. Plus, with all the time she saves not having to iron shirts, imagine the possibilities.
Craig Boreth is a truly talented writer who has written for major publications. He also has quite the varied life experience as a landscape architect, chef, electrician and carpenter. He joins the ranks of authors like W. Bruce Cameron, Steven Andrew Guerrero and Mike Dugan who provide humorous insight into the male psyche and also love women and take pride in making a woman's life more enjoyable.
I look forward to reading any book Craig Boreth writes because he also completely understands the female psyche and his wit and comedic timing is perfect.

Customer Reviews:
Beginner Book.......2007-04-19
I bought this book because it said fresh and fun designs but they were very simple and not all that fun. Good designs if your starting out and want to start a nice project.
Great book.......2007-01-12
Love the designs and the yarn that is used. I had a hard time finding
the yarn at first, but finally found it at a local place.
I made the sweater with the hood and It came out very well.
Great crochet for kids!.......2007-01-11
This book was full of great crochet for kids, with well written instructions. Full color pictures of each project really inspired me, and I've already created several of the outfits for my grandchildren. Excellent addition to any crocheter's library, and a super gift for anyone who enjoys crochet.
great for beginners, a little boring for the rest.......2006-12-31
I got this book when I first started making kid's clothes. It's great for that; easy instructions, projects come out as described, and I didn't need lots of buttons and other doodads for them. As I became more proficient I got bored, and starting improvising with the patterns and designs. This is a great beginner, basic book, but if you are experienced skip it and go for the Candi Jensen series.
Little disappointed . . . We'll see.......2006-07-28
The descriptions and ratings of the book made me think the designs would be cuter than they are. For the most part, the designs look like old fashioned bathing costumes with a couple cute hats, done in single crochet. Before I got the book, I was all fired up to make something for my daughter, but I don't like the way the outfits look on the kids in the photos. Truthfully, not my taste at all. I suppose the pattern simplicity has something to do with kicking the jumpsuits out before the child outgrows them. Even so, the outlined construction process looks long and tedious for an outfit that might be worn a half dozen times or less. Unless you crochet like the wind and like old fashioned, fugly clothes, this probably isn't the book for you.

Book Description
Parents who wish to handle discipline problems in firm and loving ways need tools. Time-In is a practical process that teaches children how to be competent, to think, and to succeed. It uses four tools, Ask, Act, Attend, and Amend, which fit together like interchangeable puzzle pieces. Time-In addresses discipline and misbehavior while strengthening the connection the child has with the parent or teacher.
Customer Reviews:
Great ideas for many disciplinary issues...........2006-12-09
I love this book, which advocates teaching children the skills to think about what they are doing or have done (through Ask and Attend), and to change their behavior and make amends (through Act and Amend). This approach works beautifully when you have plenty of time to use the teachable momment. I've used it for playground issues and sibling issues, among other things.
However, sometimes a faster strategy is needed. For example, imagine children getting a bit rowdy in the library, chasing each other through the stacks. You need a quick, immediate way to bring the festivities to a halt. For those scenarios, I recommend the "1-2-3 Magic" book. Once your kids are trained in the 1-2-3 approach, you can just stand there and count "1, 2..." and before you get to three all of your children will be standing in front of you. (I speak from experience here - the 1-2-3 approach is very fast and gets immediate compliance.)
Anyway, in a situation like the library above, after your children are standing quietly in front of you, you can switch to the "Time-In" approach, asking them how they think other people in the library feel, etc...
Definitely worth a read.
Quick and easy read, easy to implement.......2006-09-01
This book was such a quick and easy read. I think it's a good part of a mother's overall loving guidance toolbox. I use the "ask, act, amend, attend" techniques it recommends with my child. I also draw on other techniques to help me with positive discipline, so, while this doesn't provide the whole picture, it's a great piece.
Quick read with some helpful tips.......2002-06-24
I read this book on recommendation of my local librarian. It is a short, easy read with some practical tips on disciplining your children. May not be as useful for parents of very young children (toddler years). I liked the way she gives examples using different aged children from 3 to 12 years old. Many of the ideas are not profound, but provide a fresh approach to methods you may already be using. Lots of good references listed. This book is concise and reassuring, but not for you if you are looking for a deep philosophical read on child rearing.
Time-In When Time-Out Doesn't Work.......2001-02-19
I think this book outlines what the parents of the United States need to do to discipline their children. This book is short and has short chapters for the busy parent or caregiver. The process of discipline suggested can be adapted to any situation or set of values. It does, however, assume that the reader is willing to put time and effort into becoming a good caregiver of children. The philosophy of this book is in connecting children with their caregivers through stopping unwanted behavior, making a connection by teaching the child what you want them to learn, and therfore how to solve their own problems and take responsibility for the outcomes of their actions and attitudes.

Book Description
During his first visit to London, Anthony van Dyck produced his portrait of Thomas Howard. It marked the beginning of van Dyck's brilliant international career. Thomas Howard, a prominent member of the court of James I, was to become one of the greatest and most enlightened collectors and
patrons England has ever known. In this probing study, White provides a history both of Howard, and of van Dyck, whose canvases established the grand tradition of portraiture both in England and on the Continent. This volume in the Getty Museum Studies in Art series offers not only a complete
study of a great painting but also a primer on how great collections are formed and great careers are launched.
