The story that makes you laugh and not only cry.......2001-09-07
This auobiographical war-time narrative favorably differs from all the rest of such stories because it doesn't bear the grievous touch of overall misery and sufferings. Of course, one gets the idea of what was going on then, in the last year of WWII, with the defeated German army, whose officers hastily left their troops and fled, leaving soldiers to the mercy of fate. Due to the author's superb sense of humor, you don't get overwhelmed with the realities of those years, and lots of direct speech and lively dialogues make the narrative still more realistic and make the reader sympathetic to the protagonist - a well-articulate, smart, and bold 19-yo German boy. I highly recommend this book to all who are interested in the post-war history and life of real people, and who can appreciate the author's sense of humor and witty manner of narration. Happy reading!
Book Description
Enlightenment botany was replete with sexual symbolism -- to the extent that many botanical textbooks were widely considered pornographic. Carl Linnaeus's controversial new system for classifying plants based on their sexual characteristics, as well as his use of language resonating with erotic allusions, provoked intense public debate over the morality of botanical study. And the renowned Tahitian exploits of Joseph Banks -- whose trousers were reportedly stolen while he was inside the tent of Queen Oberea of Tahiti -- reinforced scandalous associations with the field. Yet Linnaeus and Banks became powerful political and scientific figures who were able to promote botanical exploration alongside the exploitation of territories, peoples, and natural resources. Sex, Botany, and Empire explores the entwined destinies of these two men and how their influence served both science and imperialism.
Patricia Fara reveals how Enlightenment botany, under the veil of rationality, manifested a drive to conquer, subdue, and deflower -- all in the name of British empire. Linnaeus trained his traveling disciples in a double mission -- to bring back specimens for the benefit of the Swedish economy and to spread the gospel of Linnaean taxonomy. Based in London at the hub of an international exchange and correspondence network, Banks ensured that Linnaeus's ideas became established throughout the world. As the president of the Royal Society for more than forty years, Banks revolutionized British science, and his innovations placed science at the heart of trade and politics. He made it a policy to collect and control resources not only for the sake of knowledge but also for the advancement of the empire. Although Linnaeus is often celebrated as modern botany's true founder, Banks has had a greater long-term impact. It was Banks who ensured that science and imperialism flourished together, and it was he who first forged the interdependent relationship between scientific inquiry and the state that endures to this day.

Linnaeus' tercentenary.......2007-03-27
May 23rd will be the 300th anniversary of Carl Linnaeus' birth so I purchased this little book to become familiar with him and to honor his memory. However this book is more about Banks than Linnaeus, altho' Banks did much to promote Linnaeus' system of classification not only in England but thru-out the world. In some ways, Banks was to Linnaeus what Huxley was to Darwin and Bateson was to Mendel. Not only did Linnaeus and Banks promote science (and themselves), but they promoted their respective country's agricultural economy before the Industrial Revolution. Yet both men were largely forgotten soon after their deaths.
In large part the successful promotion of Linnaeus' system was due to his use of animal genitalia (in an uptight society) as an analogy to describe the reproductive organs of plants and as the basis for naming and classifying them. Add to that, Banks' well-known promiscuity while in Tahiti on Captain Cook's first voyage there (to record the Transit of Venus) and you have a sure-fire salacious combination (sex sells!).
Fara also describes how the English used scientific exploration as a cover for colonization which they justified in the belief that Europeans were a superior race and must help the other races. Both Linnaeus and Banks brought in non-native plants and tried to adapt them to their countries but Banks was far more successful. Indeed Banks had plants and animals transplanted from one colony to another fairly successfully.
So eventho' I bought the book for Linnaeus, the inclusion of Banks rounds out the story. While Wikipedia has more facts on Linnaeus it has less of the personal. I gave the book only four stars because Fara doesn't include an index, tho' Amazon's `Search Inside' feature provided an alternative.
Read this for a science project.......2006-04-17
Carl Linnaeus was responsible for revolutionizing the way modern science classifies and organizes all living organisms. His simple system based on the sexual characteristics of plants shocked society and inspired other scientists including Joseph Banks, whose voyages around the world to find and classify new organisms included an interesting array of sexual exploits with the natives he came across. In her novel, Patricia Fara presents a solid and well supported thesis on how botany contributed and was inexplicably tied into the imperialism of European society, most especially the British Empire.
This book is a quick read and not overly bogged down with the intricacies of scientific classification. It presents the story of Carl Linnaeus and Joseph Banks's enormous contributions to the beginnings of modern classification while discussing the political, social, and economic incentives behind their science. Patricia Fara has written several other books concerning Enlightenment era science and this book is a prime example of her ability and specialty in tying in the role of science as a part of society and government in the 18th and 19th centuries. I recommend this book for anyone who is interested in biology or botany as well as anyone interested in the workings of early modern science and their place in the development of modern English society.

Creatively Done.......2007-01-01
This is a really neat text. As a Kundalini Yoga Teacher, I turn a lot of people on to it. I look forward to another with alternative sets.
know about 3HO, Rick Ross and Guru Bhajan.......2006-03-04
First, the book is nicley written and the exercises may or may not work. i noticed a rise in energy and old patterns coming up, might or might not be outcome of directed intent ... ( i do a lot of systems, from asthanga, hartha to martial arts and pilates) I immersed myself in kundalini yoga before i found out about who yogi bhajan, the founder of the system, truly is (a former taxi driver who feld from India and claims to have recieved these exercises from spirit after spending time in a cave. he founded kundalini yoga AFTER he couldn't make money in NY as a cab driver and arrived in LA, thrilled by the "mayan riches" of the upper - class society there. traditional sikh say what he does has nothing to do with their system and really put the emphasis on that he is a cheat. search the internet for information, especially sites from the rick ross institute http://www.rickross.com/reference/3ho/3hovisitor.html
3HO, the organisation from Yogi Bhajan, the founder of Kundalini Yoga, has been labeled a cult, and is in fact a money producing machine that goes beyond kundalini yoga as physical exercises. The exercises by itself may not be bad, although some people claim that the risk of physical insury with certain exercises is a given; apparently yohi bhajan didn't know much about basic physical structure and function.
so i just wanted to pass on the info before someone decides to buy the books on kundalini yoga so everybody can come to their own conclusions in a balanced way. distinguish and listen to your guidance.. doing the exercises may not be necesarily "negative", but being sucked into a cult with dubious roots may not be something you really intend.
Excellent Manual.......2004-12-15
This book is organized quite well. The layout is simple and straightforward. You are taken step by step in creating your own yoga routine. First, you learn about numerology and then use it to calculate which yogic bodies you need to work on. There are two meditations to choose from per yogic body. Next, you learn about the chakras and use a chart to rate your abilities within each chakra. You then use these scores to determine which chakra to work on first. Finally, you are shown how to compose an entire routine consisting of warm-up exercises, your personal kriya (chakra exercise), deep relaxation and wake-up sequence, your personal yogic body meditation, and a completion mantra. There is easily enough information in this book to provide for years of diverse methods of practice.
The book is also very well illustrated; all of the exercises are quite easy to emulate. The final section illustrates and expounds upon aspects of the exercises including breath, mantras, mundras, asanas, and bandhs.
Something to note also: this book is primarily an instruction manual. As such, it doesn't always adequately or fully explain everything presented. If you are, in fact, looking for a training guide and not a book that espouses the metaphysics of yoga, this is not really a problem.
Gentle introduction, but lacks consistency in purpose.......2004-07-23
This book synthesizes quite well the purpose of Kundalini Yoga. The first part on numerology and chakras is well written and provides relatively unbiased information. Parts 2, 3 and 4 on the other hand stand a little behind the first part as neither Yoga nor Kundalini can be limited to Hatha Yoga, the purely physical part of Yoga most people understand of Yoga.
As correctly stated in part one, the purpose of awakening the Kundalini is not a question related to the physical plane, its purpose is to awaken another level of consciousness within. It's a spiritual issue. Awakening the Kundalini should not be done unless your spiritual consciousness rises at the same time. One should not try to raise the Kundalini without being correctly prepared to it (on the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual planes), as it might be harmful. Playing with a tool one does not understand is dangerous.
Parts 3, 4 and 5 still provide useful information to start Yoga and meditation, but the book is not sufficiently self-contained to properly tackle Hatha Yoga.
So i'm rating this book 3 stars because of the lack of consistency between the first part that focuses on the spiritual and consciousness aspects, while the rest is too much focused on Hatha Yoga but without properly explaining the how's and why's. So either this book was aimed at being a compromise between the hidden and actual purpose of Yoga and the physical part of it (Hatha Yoga), or its authors do not understand Yoga as a whole.
best yoga book i've read!.......2003-10-29
This is a simple and easy way to start a yoga practice. It provides several easy to follow and understand excercises, as well as several ways to aide in choosing which set to do. Wonderful Book!

If You Love Bouviers..........2006-02-15
If you love Bouviers, you will love this book. It is worth every penny! Great history, photos, and packed all the information you need as a potential Bouvier owner or as an admirer of the breed. Pedigrees, puppy selection, grooming... it's all there. A must have if you plan to own a Bouvier. I keep mine on my bedside table... when I'm not carrying it around with me. (Yup, it's heavy.) This is the best Bouvier book I've ever found and definitely the most thorough.
Detailed history of breed, special emphasis on police work.......1999-01-15
As a new and first time owner of a Bouvier des Flandres puppy, I appreciated many of the details, historical, raising and breeding. The book emphasizes the Bouvier as a Schultzhund dog, which is the author's perogative. I would have appreciated more information on training of a Bouvier for a pet. Many dog owners desire a lovable pet not a champion police dog. The author is an important breeder of Bouviers and he has many valid points to keep the Bouviers to a standard. I myself researched breeders for several months as it is a problem. My summary statement is that the book is worth the money. If there is a revision, I hope the author will broaden his interests in the breed for the general dog owner.
The Bouvier book everyone should read.......1998-12-09
A most informative easy to read book, giving accurate detail and information about the Bouvier des Flandres.
Engle accurately portrays the breed in easy to read text........1998-03-04
Engle does an excellant job of portraying Bouviers as the working family dog they really are. All Bouvier owners should read this book. Kathleen Ryan
This is it! The book that does the breed justice!.......1996-08-02
If you are a Bouvier des Flandres fancier or just think that
you would like to know more about the breed, buy this book!
History, bloodlines, showing, training and grooming are all
covered in detail.
Best of all, this book does what we wish all breed books
did. It gives us an HONEST picture of a noble breed without
the sugar-coated praise that makes too many people buy the
wrong dog. Read this book and you won't go wrong when you
look into Bouviers.

This is a nice book. Especially, when you are still in the "research phase" of finding out if a Bouvier is the dog for you. We currently live in The Netherlands and took this book to our new puppies breeder and he also thought it was "a very good book." This book is easy to read and has nice heavy pages. BOUVIER DES FLANDRES BY CLAIRE MCLEAN.......2000-04-15
My husband and I own a 4 yr old Bouvier named Gibson and are avid "Bouv" people. This book was recommended as one of the books to read before acquiring a Bouv. It has excellent history and standards for both the American and Canadian Kennel Clubs if you choose to show. Some of the pictures of the breed are from the early 1900's are rare and wonderful to see. Since the breed was almost wiped out by the Nazis, most records and pictures destroyed, these pictures are rare and beautiful.
It is a good book for the new Bouv owner or someone who is thinking of buying one. The Bouvier is not a dog for everyone. They have a tendancy to be very stubborn and mature mentally at about the age of 3, so they require lots of love, patience, and positive reinforcement. They are "thinkers" and are often decribed as smarter than their owners. They will keep you young and thinking on your feet. The descriptions in this book are very true to form. Great book all around! If you are researching lineage, there is quite a bit of info in this book. Try it, You'll like it.

Haircutting Basics, a must book for every apprentice, teacher and salon owner. The book provides an easy technique to cut men's hair, bob, layers, and wedge haircuts, how to cut faster, how to analyze the hair, how to cut hair with clippers, how to use angles and guides to cut hair with precision, how to cut men's hair, beard and mustache with the clippers and much more.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome.......2006-11-06
This book helped me grow out my hair and keep it looking cute as I did so.I also had compliments from strangers on how cute my hairstyle looked.
A good book to learn the basics.......2006-08-22
This is a must reading for anyone who is starting to learn how to cut hair. It explains very well the basic things, simple, that you need to know to cut hair. This book does not explain advanced techniques or haircuts, but to do this you need first to learn the basics, and this book does a prety good job at that. The drawings are good and helpful to understand the material explained. I would recomend to buy the accompanying VHS to understand better. This VHS is not available through amazon, at least at this time, but it can be ordered by requesting a brochure at 305-362-6998 of the publishing company.
Unclear instructions.......2005-07-13
This book is unclear in two ways. #1 it dosn't have very good pictures and #2 it has unclear instructions. I have only checked it out at our local library, so I have not deeply looked into it. But It appeared not well orgonized and hard to understand. Altogether, at first appearence it would not be my choice.
Not one of the better.......2005-01-27
Not one of the better books out there... I should have sent it back, but I did not, I will donate it to the beauty school when I leave and get a tax credit I guess. disappointing, did not learn anything that was not in the standard already, you are better off observing than trying to understand this mess.
Good info, Poor Illustrations.......2004-05-01
The info is good. Im a cosmetology student, so I can actually understand the content. The pictures are not very good. I would like to see color pictures, w/maybe a Manikin demonstration on haircuts, something other than the simple drawings provided.

Book Description
From a pediatrician who specializes in childhood obesity, 100 healthy eating tips for parents of children of all ages.
One of the most important steps that parents can take to prevent childhood obesity or simply to get their children to a healthier weight is to teach them good eating habits. Establishing such habits at an early age will contribute to lifelong health. Indeed, when kids learn that a snack should be an apple or carrots instead of chips or a candy bar-a deceptively difficult lesson to teach-they are better equipped to resist the temptation of junk food on a regular basic.
In Raising Healthy Eaters, Dr. Legere offers 100 easy-to-follow and easy-to-implement tips for parents of children of all ages and eating preferences. He includes healthy, quick recipes that kids will actually like, as well as specific suggestions for parents who want to serve only organic foods or whose children have allergies or aversions. Raising Healthy Eaters is the essential resource for parents working to raise healthy kids in a fast-food world.
Customer Reviews:
Adds to the problem of healthy eating.......2006-09-27
This book is really a blown up pamphlet containing mostly fluff, with some curious ideas and egregious mistakes on healthy eating. Sugar-free Kool-Aid anyone? You know the stuff that contains aspartame-a known carcinogen. Or how about avoiding organic foods because the only thing they don't have are "artificial chemicals, pesticides, antibiotics, growth promoters, fertilizers and no genetically modified ingredients". Huh? Or avoid organic foods because manure is used as fertilizer and contains e-coli. Whoa! turn this around-in organic farming, when farmers raise a small quantity of animals they can compost the waste. With industrial farming there are way too many animals resulting in excess manure that can't be composted. This raw manure as well as sewage is used to fertilize fields bringing pathogenic bacteria into contact with grains, vegetables, and fruits not usually contaminated with such organisms. (See the recent media story on e-coli in conventional spinach).
