    Book Description

America's greatest twentieth-century scientist tells his own story.

Glenn T. Seaborg (1912-1999) won a Nobel Prize before he was forty. He discovered the element that makes atomic bombs explode and the isotopes used to treat millions of cancer patients. He ran the University of California at Berkeley and advised nine U.S. presidents. Here is his autobiography -- the extraordinary story of a modest Swedish American who never strayed from his strong basic commitments throughout a career that gave him national and international fame. Seaborg's story begins in Michigan with his Scandinavian parents, but shifts quickly to California, where he got himself an education he didn't think he could afford during the dark days of the Depression. During World War II, he led the Manhattan Project group that devised the chemical extraction processes producing plutonium 239. He also shares the drama of scientific discovery and the inner history of his pioneering work on the many transuranium elements he co-discovered at the Radiation Laboratory at Berkeley -- work that earned him the Nobel Prize in 1951. As chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission under three presidents, Seaborg fought for the Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty and argued in favor of the peaceful uses and international controls of atomic energy. His is the riveting account of a life like no other -- a model of the best in our nation.

5 out of 5 stars A very human and humanizing book about Seaborg.......2003-09-24

I liked this book a lot. It reminded me so much of some projects I have worked on in terms of the happenstance and there you are. Seaborg was a kind, sane and good person, and it really comes across in this book.

Such a contrast to so many today, and the politics have become so impenetrable these days. The UC system was nearly new then, it made me really feel how California was bubbling with new and great possibilities 70-50 years ago.

I wish I had met the man. I hope I can be somewhere near as good a man as he was.

4 out of 5 stars From someone in the middle of it........2003-01-29

This was a very interesting book. You got to learn about the guy who was first able to separate plutonium not just a small bit at a time but on an industrial scale at Hanford. The story got me interested in Lawerence and the cyclotron and how some of the newer elements were used like the one they use in smoke detectors. He was an interesting character who tried to work within the system. By the end of the story you can see his democratic leanings because none of the Republican seem to know what they were doing but aside from that it is an interesting story which made me want to know more about nuclear power. I never knew about all the peaceful uses they tried that were explained in this book. This book made me want to know more of what actually happened which is why I read the new Rickover book by Frances Ducan. In his book he mentions Seaborg several times. The book has it's funny parts like when he was chancellor of Berkley how the male students council came to him and ask him to turn one of the dorms into a brothel so the guys could stay on campus and still relief some stress. Seaborg wore a lot of hats and his story coinsides with the times that he lived. This is shown by how he felt about working on the bomb during World War II. At the time Germany had taken most of Europe and Japan was all over China and the Pacific and if he didn't do something to stop them, they would rule the world. It made it seem less of a moral choice than one of survival.

5 out of 5 stars Adventures in the Mind.......2002-02-09

Adventures in the Atomic Age is a remarkably friendly book. It is Glenn Seaborg's autobiography (completed after his death by his son). He helped develop the atom bomb, won the Nobel Prize and had an element named after him and those are only a few of his many achievements. He also chaired the Atomic Energy Commission, was chancellor of the University of California at Berkeley and was a professor whenever there was a lull in his career. He worked to make science interesting and accessible to the public, especially to students. An idea of how well he succeeded is shown by the fact that this book actually makes the science of the atom bomb intelligible. This is a book that can be read on many levels. It can be simply a history of the atomic age for he was there at the very beginning. It can be a history of the changing political scene during his life. It can also be read simply as the history of a thoroughly decent person. Glenn Seaborg comes across as a nice guy, the sort of person you would want as a next door neighbor, and would definitely want as a teacher.

5 out of 5 stars Find Out Why Element 106 Became Seaborgium And Other Stories.......2001-11-19

To have an element named for you while you are still alive is the rarest of honors and Adventures In The Atomic Age: From Watts To Washington by Glenn T. Seaborg is the story of a life worthy of that honor. Glenn T. Seaborg takes you on a trip through his life, starting with his boyhood in Michigan and his teen years in South Gate, California. Hard work gets Seaborg to UCLA and continued hard work gets him to UC Berkeley, the place where most of his academic life will take place. Seaborg was student, teacher, researcher, the Golden Bear's biggest fan, and chancellor. Seaborg quietly affected all of our lives as the head of the AEC, and, for the most part, we are better off for his rational leadership of that organization. He served on the committee that wrote the educational report 'A Nation At Risk' and served on the committee that recently reformed California's science curriculum. He is proof that a public education can be excellent and that you get out of your education what you put into it. The people who have heard of Professor Seaborg usually know him as one of the co-discoverers of the element plutonium, but this book should give anyone who reads it a wider view of a rich life. Glenn T. Seaborg is not the household name like J. Robert Oppenheimer or Edward Teller, but hopefully this excellent autobiography will be a step towards making this wonderful scientist and human being more widely known.

"Heart disease is a woman's greatest health threat," writes cardiologist Nieca Goldberg, M.D. Until recently, heart research was done on men, and women were considered "small men." But women are quite different from men in physiology and patterns, and require a targeted approach. Goldberg's mission is to help women prevent or manage heart disease by understanding their unique symptoms, risk factors, prevention options, medical treatments, lifestyle choices, hormones, supplements, and recovery methods.

Women Are Not Small Men is organized clearly. Each risk factor is organized by "the facts" and "your next step." A chapter on symptoms and diagnosis includes action plans and questions your doctor will ask you. Goldberg discusses the latest research on hormone replacement therapy, so you can make your own decision in partnership with your physician.

She recommends exercise, dietary modification, smoking cessation, and stress reduction, showing you how to take easy steps that will result in big changes. Questionnaires, tips, and anecdotes personalize the material. Goldberg is chief of cardiac rehabilitation and chief of the Women's Heart Program at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, and she offers in this book a wealth of information that will empower women to understand heart disease. --Joan Price

    Book Description

One out of every two women will die of heart disease. It is the single greatest health risk for women today—more than stroke and all cancers combined. In the course of her work as founder and chief of the Women’s Heart Program at New York’s Lenox Hill Hospital, Dr. Goldberg has come to a startling realization: Women experience heart disease in a fundamentally different way than men do. The physiology of a woman’s heart attack is not the same as a man’s, the symptoms of heart disease and signs of impending heart attack differ for women, and once heart disease has been recognized, women often do not get the treatment and medications they require. Now here are detailed, age-specific programs that give women the facts and the guidance they need to recognize, treat, and prevent heart disease, including

    • How you can rate your risk of heart disease
    • The effects of menopause on your heart
    • Risk factors you can change—starting today
    • A heart healthy exercise plan that works for you
    • A complete guide to heart healthy supplements
    • The truth about hormone replacement therapy and the heart
    • Recovering from a heart attack or surgery

Authoritative, caring, and up-to-the-minute, this is destined to become the women’s health book of the new millennium.

    5 out of 5 stars What I Wish I Had Known.......2003-03-07

Our daughter Jenny died suddenly at the age of 21. She has been under the care of a cardiologist for high blood pressure. Jenny developed symptons of heart disease that went unrecognized.
Her visit to the Emergency Room where she presented with palpitations, nausea, bilateral arm pain and jaw pain were dismissed as symptons of anxiety. She was released without further testing. She died at home the next morning. Further studies revealed that two of her major arteries were completely ocluded.
I have read this book and purchased addtional copies for families and friends.
I truly believe if I had known what I know now about heart disease in women, perhaps Jenny could have been saved.
I urge you to read and share this book with those you love.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of useable information........2002-10-09

Many medical books written by doctors are hard to read, dry, boring, technical. Reading this book is like talking to a friend who is not only very knowledgeable but also very concerned. There is good medical information, and practical information on how to set up a personal plan for preventing heart disease and talking to your doctor. Best of all it is written by a woman for women.

    5 out of 5 stars Menopausal Woman.......2002-07-13

After all the press on HRT, I was petrified that there was no option for heart disease prevention. I bought Dr.Goldberg's book after listening to her on KOMO radio. Dr. Goldberg's thorough review of HRT and its problems was easy to understand and made a lot of sense. I now know there are many options for heart disease prevention as well as osteoporosis and menopause. I only wish I was in New York and could see her as a patient.

5 out of 5 stars Sensible heart information for women.......2002-04-23

I have bought 3 copies of this book for family members and am ordering another one. It is the clearest, best information about women's heart problems and what to do about them that I have ever come across and because I have a heart problem I have read most of the non-technical literature available. Dr. Goldberg writes specifically about women's heart problems which, until now, have been minimized or disregarded. She makes great sense.

5 out of 5 stars Great Health Guide.......2002-04-09

"Women are not Small Men" is a great book. It's easy to read and comprehend. Dr. Goldberg outlines great tips for a healthy heart.

      Book Description

Southern cooking used to be an expression of art and love, according to Martha Stamps, but sometime in the middle of the twentieth century an "abomination of honest Southern cooking" took place. As women joined the work force in ever-increasing numbers, their lives became so full that eating became an inconvenience and cooking a chore. "Casserole Cuisine"-just add Velveeta and a can of cream of mushroom soup-pushed aside the traditional hearty, gutsy cuisine of the South.

Today homemakers are looking to get back in touch with the foods of character that previous generations took for granted. The cuisine in The New Southern Basics performs that role, reaching back to a generation that took the time to do things right and re-creating the basic southern foods in ways that accommodate the tastes and nutritional concerns of our own time. The author exalts the use of fresh ingredients and cooking from scratch, noting that this is more than a matter of style; it tastes better and is much more valuable nutritionally and economically.

"I have always loved the innate rythms of the kitchen," writes the author. "In shelling peas, cleaning greens, and kneading dough, a heartbeat is reflected in the slow dance of the seasons. I believe that our generation, especially in these hectic times, can find comfort in these natural rythms and cycles."

4 out of 5 stars The New Southern Basics: Traditional Southern Food for Today.......2007-08-23

Great book for learning the basics of southern cooking. Recipes were easy to follow and delicious. Would definitely recommend.

2 out of 5 stars Proceed with caution..........2005-01-03

I have made some wonderful dishes from this book, but it contains its fair share of stinkers, as well. After having the misfortune of coming across several failed recipes, I've come to the conclusion that this must be the author's first attempt at transcribing recipes which she's been cooking from memory for years. This cookbook is riddled with errors and omissions -- it clearly has not been kitchen tested by the publisher. The cheese straws required additional butter, the oven baked pork chops don't tell you what to do with the flour mixture (it's for dredging the pork chops before browining), the Hoppin' John doesn't work with fresh blackeyed peas, even though it says it will (too much liquid), and the cranberry loaf just flat-out does not work (this was an expensive failure, as it contains two cups of walnuts). In addition, the book is also light on details such as pan sizes and exact cooking times.

That said, the maccaroni and cheese, greens with tomatoes, pumpkin bread, date nut cookies, white bread, cucumber sandwiches, and real french dressing were all successful and quite good.

This is a nice book to play with, but I wouldn't recommend cooking anything new for the first time when you're having company over. You also might want to cross-reference any recipes that catch your interest with recipes from other cookbooks or the internet just to be safe.

      5 out of 5 stars Martha's passion is evident.......2003-01-30

For a Northerner who can't cook (i.e. follow dirctions wellwhen cooking) and doesn't particularly like to cook, I LOVED this cookbook. Now you may be asking yourself why a self described non-cooking woman would by this book. It's very simple. I've eaten the wonderful food Martha Stamps cooks up at her restaurant at the Belle Meade Plantation. I'll also confess that initially I purchased the book just because I loved the tea punch and knew I'd never remember the recipe until I got home from Nashville.

What I found not only by eating at her restaurant but by actually reading the cookbook is that her passion for cooking is clearly evident. While the recipes can stand on their own, what
makes this cook book so special are the details about Martha and her family that accompany the recipes. It is clearly evident that cooking is not just a vocation for her but a passion. These recipes aren't just thrown together, they have a history to them.

Even if you buy this book for just one recipe - it's worth it.

5 out of 5 stars The most used cookbook I own!.......2002-01-23

      This cookbook is wonderful!
I was looking for a cookbook that had the recipes that my Grandmothers, from Southern Illionis, would cook when I would visit every summer.

What you will find most amazing about this cookbook is that you will have many of the ingredients in your panty. (Even if it's not stocked with fancy foodstuff!)

My husband thinks the meatloaf recipe is simply the best and raves and raves about it! The cheese straws I made for a Thanksgiving were all devoured in one night! As did they love the pimento cheese. The beef stew is wonderful as is the pot roast, chicken and dumplings, chicken salad, and the maccaroni and cheese is great. I've made the beef stew. Oh my goodness, was it good! Oh and the recipe for Banana Nut Bread is the best I've ever made, per my neighbors, my doctor, his wife, and even my Mama. Forget about my kids, I make double and triple batches and it's gone within a few day! For a Christmas get together I made the fudge pie and bought peppermint ice cream.(I had been out all day and was so tired, it really is an easy dessert!) The men loved it even more than the kids!

If Mrs. Stamps ever reads these reviews: Please get another cookbook out with some "More Southern Basics".

When I use this cookbook I am always thinking about my Grandmothers. They loved their men and their children, grandchildren and great grand-children, and most of all they loved who they were - Women raising a family, being smart, yet furgal when it came to providing for those they loved. And so proud.

Can a cookbook evolve all this emotion?
Yes it can and it does.

      5 out of 5 stars comfort food.......2001-12-07

This is the kind of book that reads as much as a novel as it does a cookbook. With little anecdotes, rememberances, and stories accompanying almost every recipe, it is a delight to read and can be done so in one sitting. Being born and raised far from the South, some of the recipes sounded a little unusual to me, but no less intriguing. The recipes are easy to follow and often use ingredients that are already in the pantry or cupboards. So many of the recipes can be classified as "comfort food", as they are not only pleasing to the stomach but bring back those feelings of contentment so many people feel after a favorite meal. After trying Phelps-Stamps recipe for Scalloped Potatoes, I will never again make them from a boxed mix. Her recipe is just too easy and the result is too delicious to ever go back to its "convenience based" counterpart. And this is a sentiment I find myself discovering over and over as I try more recipes from the book. As a cookbook collector with over 100 books in my collection, "The New Southern Basics" cookbook is a favorite and one I find myself reaching for quite often.

Southern cooking was an act of art and love at one time, according to restaurateur Martha Stamps, but during the middle of the twentieth century an "abomination of honest southern cooking" took place. As women joined the workforce in ever-increasing numbers, their lives became so busy that eating became an inconvenience and cooking a chore. Anything that could make the job of feeding the family more convenient was hallowed. Instant meals, frozen foods, microwaves - these became the staples of "cooking," replacing the knowledge and techniques previously handed down from generation to generation. Casserole cuisine - "just add Velveeta and a can of cream of mushroom soup" - pushed aside the traditional hearty cuisine of the South.

Blessedly, a change is occurring throughout the nation and particularly in the South. Today's homemakers are looking to get back in touch with the foods and character that previous generations took for granted. The cuisine celebrated in The New New Southern Basics performs that role, reaching back to a generation that took the time to do things right and recreating the basic southern foods in ways that accommodate the tastes and nutritional concerns of our time. Martha Stamps exalts the use of fresh ingredients and cooking from scratch, noting that this is more than a matter of style; it tastes better and is much more valuable nutritionally and economically.

The first edition of this book, The New Southern Basics, was published to much critical acclaim in 1997. "This is the food that has found its way to the hottest restaurants in New York and Los Angeles, but which tastes even better at home," Stamps writes. This food is "worth taking a little time and giving a little effort, for your friends, your family, your own satisfaction."

                    Book Description

This book revives the exhilaration and joy of playing childhood games with a medley of spirited quilt projects. These games are played at the sewing machine with thread, vibrant fabric, and an open mind. It's okay to be a rule-breaker in these games. A strict code of 1/4 inch seam allowances, impeccable grain lines, perfect color matches, and flawless points is not enforced with these playful projects. Elements of design, such as proportion and scale, balance, rhythm, and focus, will become second nature with the author's fun approach. The quilt projects include lively favorites such as Pin the Tail on the donkey, Tic-Tac-Toe, Ring Around the Rosy, and Hopscotch. Each project has three sections: the Object of the Game, Game Plan, and Your Move. All provide instructions for creating the quilts. As you are guided through making a mock-up of the game, forming your own version of the quilt becomes recreational. Each game includes photographs of several variations to inspire you. Break free from the conventional and discover creative energies that have been there all the time, just waiting to be released. AUTHORBIO: Armed with a bachelor of arts degree in English and minors in French and philosophy, Dianne S. Hire rapidly changed her focus from language to fiber. Her 17 year career as a buyer of haute couture clothing introduced her to excellence in design and color. Soon, Dianne was asked to share her passion for fiber through lectures, then teaching. This book is a furtherance of Dianne's enthusiasm for teaching and is her second book with the American Quilter's Society. REVIEW: An Amazon reviewer from Springfield, MA says, 'I am a quilter who absolutely loves playing with fabric and hates measuring. Dianne's book is my dream workbook -- it's full of ways to play with your fabrics and learn new approaches to creating a beautiful quilt, and encourages a playful, risk-taking spirit.

4 out of 5 stars Free to have fun.......2006-08-07

I bought this book in preparation for taking a class with the author. It is a great, structured way to let yourself be free and have fun. By playing the games listed in the book, you can end up with all the components of a great new quilt, that will look nothing like that made by anyone else. We each play our own games, in our own way, with our own fabric. Be warned, this is not for beginners. The beginner in my class left in tears after about the first hour. A beginner, who needs more direction, would probably never start. This book is for a quilter who wants to create her own fiber art, but needs something more than a great pile of fabric and a blank slate.

5 out of 5 stars Start USING your stash.......2006-01-13

If you're more of a creative than a quilter, like I am, this is the book for you. In successive chapters, Hire takes the participant through eleven "games" with your fabric stash -- each which develops your skills and leaves you with an amazing set of non-traditional, contemporary quilts. From a Hopscotch block (a modified Courthouse Steps pattern) that is so easy it's beyond exciting, to a Toybox quilt which employs circles and spirals -- if you play these "games" in succession, you'll find your quilting creativity engage while your skills build and your stash shrinks. (And anything that shrinks your stash is just a good excuse to go shopping for more, right?)

If you're one of those perfect-corners and traditional blocks type of quilters, this book may drive you insane. But if you're a free spirit or a risk taker or someone coming to quilting by the way of other creative arts, this is a perfect book. It's easily the favorite in my collection that I can see myself going back to again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful fun for adventurous quilters.......2004-02-21

I am a quilter who absolutely loves playing with fabric and hates measuring. Dianne's book is my dream workbook--it's full of ways to play with your fabrics and learn new approaches to creating a beautiful quilt, and encourages a playful, risk-taking spirit.

The book is divided into different "games," like Hopscotch, where you create a series of narrow, then wide, then narrow pieces that really do look like the hopscotch boards of our childhood; Tiddlywinks, with multicolored concentric ovals and circles arranged in patterns; Musical Chairs, with colors shifting from skewed block to skewed block in an orderly progression (until you throw in a Wild Card), and lots more. The best part is, Dianne shows you how to do each kind of improvisational piecing and then sets you free with lots of ideas and examples, so you can create something that is totally your own. The photos in the book are of wonderfully free-spirited quilts by several different quilters, and are in a lot of color schemes, though most are bright. Dianne encourages experimentation and ornamentation--there are plenty of beads, buttons, dangles and whirligigs here--and helps you get over your fear of cutting into big pieces of beautiful yardage by suggesting you "sneak up on them" and whack them into pieces, which then can go into a gloriously jumbled scrap basket that will trigger new ideas and combinations.
I just wish Amazon would post a cover photo and a "Take A Look Inside" section of the book. If you have any interest at all in improvisational quilting, you MUST get this book.

                      Book Description

Affirmations are more than just words. They can heal hurts, build self-esteem, and empower us to face life with confidence and courage. In a world filled with stress, pressures, and fears, children need support and encouragement from adults—and they need to know how to affirm themselves.

This revised and updated edition of a beloved classic makes affirmations easy to understand. Douglas Bloch leads readers step-by-step through the process of helping kids turn off the negative voice within and activate the powerful "yes!" voice. Kids learn affirmations for all kinds of situations and challenges: school and academics, athletics, facing fears, feeling angry, getting teased, being depressed, and more. There are affirmations for specific developmental stages (from infancy through adolescence) and for special needs including learning differences, behavior disorders, and family problems. Bloch also includes affirmations to help adults deal with their own issues and better help the children in their care.

                      5 out of 5 stars GREAT Book!.......2005-03-17

Actually, this is a wonderful book. While yes, stating several obvious, key ideas through out the book, some people actually need to be told that 'duh' stuff (hello, have you seen the state of our children recently?). And this book is about believing in the power of words... NOT using them as a cure-all for everything but rather believing your attitude and your outlook on life has a huge impact on what happens in it.(And for the record the child in the book with the flu merely used an affirmation for good health and noticed a decrease in symptoms and seemed to be rid of the bug quicker than normal). The reason it's broken down into a more simplistic dialogue is because we're using it as a tool to communicate to our kids and help them communicate for themselves, and having it in a simple language makes it that much easier to put into practice. Quite frankly, this book speaks to me and I wish a parent of mine would have cared enough to have picked it up when I was young (I'm sure many parents out there aren't as in tune with their children and their feelings as others... and maybe their kids are the ones who will wish their parents would have given a book like this a chance some day)

1 out of 5 stars No new ideas here.......2003-09-02

If you've ever seen Stuart Smalley ("I'm smart, I'm good, and damnit--people like me") on Saturday Night Live, then you know all there is to know about this book. The authors do nothing but state the obvious by saying that we shouldn't tell our kids things we might have heard growing up, like "You're a loser." Thank you, Captain Obvious. There is some comedy here, though I don't think they intended for readers to laugh. For instance, he says that when he starts feeling sick (eg, with the flu!) he just says "My flu bug is gone. I am healthy and well." Mr. Bloch gave this advice to a twelve-year-old, never mentioning the value of a flu shot. Even worse, the authors carry this simplistic theme throughout the book. They actually believe that kids need only repeat positive statements in their heads to solve complex problems, like making new friends. Apparently, by saying things like, "I can make new friends" over and over in one's head will bring instant popularity. The underlying complexity of the social fabric and the individual characteristics are never discussed. I did learn one thing from this book, though--anyone with time and money can get a master's degree.

                              Book Description

Neutral War is a compelling novel of World War II, based on historical incidents and characters, including Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, the Harvard man who led the attack on Pearl Harbor, and Unit 731, the secret Japanese army germ and chemical warfare operation responsible for gruesome human experimentation, and for using the weapons that resulted from this evil in the cause of the Japanese empire.

The war wasn't merely a black-and-white saga of the good fighting the bad. Sweden bought and maintained its "neutrality" by providing the Nazis with a mighty river of top-quality steel -- the steel that went into the top-quality weapons that allowed the Nazis to surge forward and conquer Europe. Switzerland bought its neutrality by financing the Nazi war effort, often with the money of Jewish victims of that effort. America was not so pure, either: FDR enticed the bumbling Japanese leaders into attacking a purposely undefended Pearl Harbor. And at war's end almost all the real war criminals in Japan -- those who developed and used chemical and germ warfare instruments of mass destruction -- were quietly pardoned and recruited into U.S. weapons programs. Their knowledge ultimately formed the basis for the biological weapons programs of the U.S., the Soviet Union, and, ever since, all the countries in between that have not been able to resist the lure of cheap weaponry.

Neutral War explores the war from the viewpoint of a Swedish diplomat stationed in Tokyo, walking the thin, dangerous line between helping the Allies (who didn't really want the help) and trying not to further endanger his own country and the people of good heart he encounters along the way in performing his duties.

                              4 out of 5 stars Intelligent Writing.......2004-08-27

Neutral War is an undetached, unsympathtic, in your face story of the relationship between two men of differing cultures in the years before and during World War II. While I found the pace rather slow and the author seemed entrenched in conveying every fact he discovered it still didn't dispell the honesty, and truth which drips from every word.
While I would have sincerly liked to have read more of the (fictional??) relationship between the Swedish narrator and Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto since this clash of cultures was intelligent and at times humorous, Gold seems bent on pressing us with facts, facts, and more facts.

Is there something wrong with this...not in my book. It was an inspiring and candid look at the protocol of war. It practically proves the adage 'those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it.'

Neutral War is 'very' much a book for OUR times and should not be overlooked for thinner, fluffier, more cozy reads.
