The Loss of the Wager is an eighteenth century melodrama set in a ferociously inhospitable climate on one of the world's most remote and dangerous coastlines. When Commodore Anson set out for the Pacific in 1740, to attack the Spanish ships on the Chilean coast, he took eight ships with him. The Wager was effectively a transport ship, carrying stores and a force of marines; as the squadron rounded Cape Horn in fearsome weather, she was unable to keep up with the rest of them, and with her gear wrecked by the storm, was driven ashore on the Patagonian coast. The tale of mutiny, hardship and tenacity that ensued was told by two of the survivors, John Bulkeley, leader of those who repudiated the captain's authority, and John Byron, then a midshipman, who remained with the captain. Both eventually reached home by different routes, and their dramatic narratives caught the public imagination. Byron was the grandfather of the poet, Lord Byron, who much admired the book and based the shipwreck scenes in Don Juan on 'my grand-dad's Narrative'. This voyage was the basis for Patrick O'Brian's historical work The Unknown Shore, written before he embarked on the Jack Aubrey novels.

Books on Health: Smart Approach to H.I.V.

It is hard to be optimistic about an incurable disease, but the author of this supportive resource, a writer who has had H.I.V. for 25 years, manages to do it. "Now that I'm healthy," he writes, "I'm far more worried about getting in a car accident on the Los Angeles Freeway than I am about getting sick from H.I.V."

Mr. Grodeck, an online editor for the RAND Corporation, guides readers through the first seven days after diagnosis, the next three weeks, and the rest of the year.

Combining the human element with essential information about treatment options, choosing the right doctors, the importance of diet and exercise, holistic alternatives and sex, the book transforms a complex disease into one that can be understood and managed.

In his discussion of treatment options, Mr. Grodeck takes a level-headed approach.

While noting that the new generation of medicines, taken together in various combinations, can slow or even halt the virus, he cautions that so-called alternative therapies do not improve the course of H.I.V. and that some are dangerous and can make the infection worse.

"If you like gambling," he writes, "you'll love herbal medicine. Most herbal or plant-based medicines haven't been properly tested, so they are risky." Moreover, he says, people taking prescription drugs should "be careful about taking herbs and supplements."

"Herbs and supplements do not work for treating H.I.V.," Mr. Grodeck concludes, "but some forms of alternative medicine help with symptoms of anxiety and depression."

The writing is easy-to-read, with a tone that's friendly and down-to-earth. It's like a good support group in a book, with quotes from the author's personal experiences and that of other people living with HIV. Chapters are only three to five pages in length. Technical matters, such as resistance testing, are put in easy-to-understand terms. Even people way past the first year will find it useful.

Dr. Dan Berger, a columnist for Positively Aware (see "The Buzz"), contributed greatly to the book and wrote the foreword. In addition to medical issues, the book covers topics such as disclosure, depression and where to go if you've been discriminated against.

What cocktails do you think people enjoyed in the Polish Middle Ages? You don't know, do you? Neither does anyone else. That's because no one bothered to write such things down. But if you had to write about American culture from, say, Prohibition to the current fin de siècle, you would be hard pressed to leave out the cocktail.

So hats off to Karen Brooks, Gideon Bosker, and Reed Darmon, who have taken it upon themselves to gather up the arcana while it is still fresh and available and save it between covers for this generation and many more to come. Design, recipes, and writing all stand out in this cocktail lovefest that courts kitsch while all but taking itself seriously. You'd certainly have trouble doing much better for a collection of cocktail recipes than those provided herein. The design gathers all that was hip and cool in the '50s, '60s, and '70s, by about which time the cocktail was fading in the face of wine on the one hand and party drugs on the other. This book is a nice sharp stick in the eye of the New Puritanism--as the authors point out, the mighty American industry that rose up in the 1950s was built on the three-martini lunch. We can, of course, only hope that decisions affecting a wider population--who's going to drive, for example, or where to dump that toxic waste--are no longer being made after three martinis, no matter what the time of day.

And speaking of martinis, while the authors make good with tasty drink recipes such as the Stardust Martini and the Cognac Zoom, sadly missing is the Cajun Martini made popular by chef Paul Prudhomme. Now that's a cocktail to tangle with. --Schuyler Ingle

Remember when swing was king, '57 Chevies ate up the road, and I Love Lucy premiered on the tube?? Why just remember the 50's, when you can relive them? With drinks like Neon Watermelon Margarita and Rocket Man surrounded by vintage ads and paraphernalia, you can't help but go retro. So cue up Old Blue Eyes, and turn up the night with this collection of classic cocktails.

Atomic Cocktails is a great book if you are interested in mixing up some potent potables, but you can find a thousand other books that give you the same information. What separates this book from the pack is the retro-packaging. Done up in a kitschy, campy style, the book harkens back to the lounge lizard days of the 50's & 60's. The book honors the time when drinking a martini was the height of cool and does the fine art of mixing drinks proud.

This was a fun read. Quick too. I found some new drink recipes, and some nostalgia for a time I am too young to remember. If anything, the book was too short as I could have done with a few more drinks, and some more nostalgia. At least some Cole Porter or Noel Coward. Rick, Nora. Somebody. Still, it was fun while it lasted, and clearly understood and conveyed the romance, grace, and promise of a Martini.

Focuses on 'wicker' baskets almost exclusively.......2007-05-10

Despite the title of "Complete Book of Basketry," this book actually only covers what I would call wicker baskets, those made with a weave of strong wood fibers and solid wood components. Adequate histories of those baskets are given, as well as some nice DIY designs. She also covers, although not in depth, popular Native American baskets but VERY LITTLE is said about baskets other than those found in the US.

There also is a strong focus on what she categorizes as Appalachian baskets.

I was looking, however, primarily for information about the world-famous baskets made by blacks/African-Americans in the Charleston, SC, area, commonly called Sweetgrass/Gullah baskets. Wright allots only one paragraph and no illustrations to this huge and popular subject, and uses the word "negro," perhaps reflective of the book's initial 1977 copywright.

English willow basketry techniques.......2002-04-25

This book has lots of great information on growing, preparing and using English willow to make baskets. The title suggests a more general topic. There are several example baskets with good instructions and diagrams, but if you're looking for instructions on flat- or round-reed baskets, look at Lyn Siler's books instead.

In 1871-1882 fifty Americans, along with other foreign experts, were employed by the Japanese government to develop Japan's northern frontier, Hokkaido. Their work covered a wide scope of activities, from introducing Western agriculture and industry, constructing roads and a railroad, and surveying topography and mines, to establishing an agricultural college. While examining the overall undertaking, Professor Fujita specifically focuses on the prominent members who left copious private and public records. She thoroughly examines their ideas as well as their attitudes toward an alien culture. At the same time, she shows the Japanese responses to these experts and their alien culture. This is the first booklength examination of a development project that, in many ways, approaches some of the twentieth century undertakings in scope and complexity. As such, it will be of interest to students and scholars of inter-cultural relations, and Japanese and American nineteenth-century history.
