Excellent... at deceiving.......2006-07-01
I felt that Ferguson achieved a nice balance by intermingling Hawking's biography with introduction to his theories. It allows your brain to alternate between working on science and returning "back to earth" to meet an interesting human being with all his problems and victories. The science part is very layman-friendly, and at the same time is not too slow for the scientifically-minded (just a bit too politically correct, but it's understandable). The biography part is tactful, and with just the right amount of detail. The book is clear and inspiring, and she convinced me to read Hawking's "A brief history of time".
Strangely enough, Hawking's book turned out to be not as clear and inspiring as Ferguson's book. She painted him as the king of clarity, conciseness, and humor, but I don't get such an impression at all from reading his book. So now I have mixed feelings: I respect Ferguson for being good at writing and teaching (better than Hawking at both), but I'm annoyed with her for the false advertisement.
Interesting if you understand it already.......2005-04-21
After reading A Brief History of Time I decided that I wanted to learn more about Stephen Hawkings himself and how he became who he is today. I picked up this book written by Kitty Ferguson, which is claimed to be a biography and started reading it. After about twenty pages she was done talking about his life and started talking about his theories. This was disappointing to me because I thought the book was a biography.
As I continued reading I became somewhat confused while she told about Hawkings discoveries. The explanations were little or none in trying to get the reader to understand the ideas. It did not help that there were very few small illustrations that were in the book to go along with her explanations. If there were highly detailed color illustrations such as those in A Brief History In Time, it might have been much easier to understand.
I did enjoy the beginning of the book where Kitty goes into detail about the beginning of Hawkings life but I feel like it was just an overview of how he became who he is today. I would not recommend this book, instead I would recommend A Brief History In Time because it is much easier to understand because it has great illustrations and is not so mathematical.
Interesting book, but also very tedious at times!.......2004-08-04
I really liked this book at times, but found Kitty tries to hard to explain Hawking's theories. If you are not one of the Mensa crowd then it gets a little meaningless like similar to reading Greek, can you speak or read Greek? not me! Some of Hawking's theories are explained well and are pretty straight forward, such as the singularity theory and how many believe the universe has expanded and then retracted back to a singularity and then expanded and retracted over and over. Also it goes into detail about his belief that particles can escape black holes, once it reaches the event horizon it splits the negative may fall directly into the black hole past the even horizon and the positive falls away from the event horizon freeing it.This aside what I really wanted to read more about was the man Hawking himself. I mean come on, I've already read "A brief history of time". In short this book is short on explaining much about Stephen and tries to hard to explain some of his many theories.
Interesting Book.......2003-12-19
Kitty Ferguson gives a lot of info on Stephen Hawking's life and works, being a small book in size it is full of interesting theories on Universe and Black Holes. It is purely scientific book thus it tries to explain everything scientifically, eventhough Stephen Hawking sometimes accepts that science cannot prove some things that are beyond our reach, nevertheless he does not accept that the whole universe is a God's creation.
"The Creation of the Universe" by Hârun Yahya is an excellent book which explains scientifically how God has created the Universe.
One star for the book + the star that is Hawking.......2003-06-05
After reading "A Brief History Of Time" by Stephen Hawking, I was absolutely taken with astrophysics. Now, I'm no professional, but I could understand Hawking's book even if I had to learn to concentrate on what I was reading completely and reread some places. Hawking attempted to explain even the most complicated things - and succeeded. I thought I could pick up Kitty Ferguson's book for some easy reading on Hawking's discoveries - boy, was I wrong!
Kitty Ferguson makes absolutely no attempt to explain the things she's talking about. None! She simply gives you facts that are impossible to accept without explanations. For the most part, I did know what she was talking about - and even then I was astounded by how confusing she had managed to make it all seem, and how imprecise a few of her facts and analogies were.
If you understand the things she's talking about (and you probably do understand most of the things if you know at least something about Hawking's discoveries), you have no need to read this book. It's not even that good of a biography. If you don't know a thing about astrophysics, but would like to learn and, what's much more important, understand these things, pick up another book - and I myself would suggest the aforementioned "A Brief History Of Time" by Stephen Hawking.

There's something awfully comforting about a cookbook that starts with a chapter on what to drink (which beers with which kinds of food) followed by eight cocktail recipes, five of them a variation on the margarita theme. Hibiscus Margaritas and Mango-Key Lime Margaritas should tip off the unsuspecting that they have just entered uncharted territory.
The drink chapter is followed by the salsa chapter (Papaya-Habanero Salsa, anyone?) is followed by breakfast--Truffled Egg Tacos? Bacon-Gruyere Migas? "What a cathartic joy it is," writes Robb Walsh, former food editor of the Austin Chronicle and one of the few American food writers with functioning taste buds, "to make a happy face with two sunny-side up eggs for eyes and bacon strips for a mouth, and to douse that cheerful bastard with a torrent of fiery red sauce." With sentiments like that, the reader is assured that only good food can follow.
And follow it does: Steak, Endive, and Blue Cheese Tacos; Shark-BLT Tacos; Serrano Ham Quesadillas; Pork and Raisin Pasillas; Wild Mushroom Mole Enchiladas; Duck Breast in Green Mole; Chipotle Swordfish Fajitas; and on into desserts.
The authors would like us to believe that this is a whole new departure on Tex-Mex food. And it certainly is that, a departure. But what they call Nuevo Tex-Mex is really just the same contrived "fusion" that happens when overamped chefs shove cuisines and ingredients of the world up against each other. There isn't anything in this book that couldn't be put on a pizza, say, and if baked in a wood-fired oven, be called startling and revolutionary in some circles. Many of the results of David Garrido's fun-in-the-kitchen escapade are indeed tasty, but benchmark of a new cuisine? Hardly that. This could only happen in America, where the culinary compass is currently in the control of a gentle-voiced Chihuahua with a taste for Taco Bell. --Schuyler Ingle
Book Description
Nuevo Tex-Mex cooking, the hottest new trend in Nuevo Latino cuisine, embraces and celebrates both its zesty Latin American flavors and no-nonsense Texas personality. This is hearty food for real people, people who are not afraid to drink a beer (or a shot of tequila) with a meal (even if it's breakfast) and get their hands a little messy. It's food that knows how to have fun without rolling in heavy ingredients. In Nuevo Tex-Mex, Texan chef David Garrido's hip and innovative recipes are presented by Texan food writer Robb Walsh with lots of humor and attitude, all photographed in vivid color and spectacular style by Texan photographer Manny Rodriguez. Even the book's designer is from Texas! This is absolutely the best thing to come along since ice cold beer, tortilla chips, and guacamole.

deep in the heart of Tex-Mex.......2000-01-01
Being from San Antonio - I was a little sceptical when I checked this out from the library. I don't know about 'Nuevo' as a trend, but the book is a delight and I hadn't had it home for more than an hour or so before I was on Amazon ordering a copy. It is fun to read and fun to cook from and the whole layout of the book is a delight with fine color photographs.

It's a nice book, full of color photos, and easy to follow delicious recipes.
Forget neuveaux cuisine, now there's Nuevo Tex-Mex.......1998-08-24
Today there are many cookbooks on Mexican cuisine. There are many on the style blending the Mexican foods with that of nearby Texas commonly known as Tex-Mex. With all of the people eating nachos, tacos and enchiladas, and all the recipes for salsas, moles and tortillas fillings there was bound to be a time that people needed a change. That change has come and has been put together by David Garrido, a chef at Jeffery's in Austin, Texas; and Robb Walsh winner of a James Beard journalism award in their new cookbook Nuevo Tex-Mex - festive new recipes from just north of the border. The cookbook contains many beautiful photographs from Manny Rodriguez food photographer originally from Havana. Together, they have all created a nice compilation of new foods that include: Mango-Key Lime Margaritas; Papaya-Habanero Salsa; Mushroom Salsa; Spinach & Mushroom Chilaquiles; Steak, Endive and Blue Cheese Tacos; Shark-BLT Tacos; Crab & Spinach Nachos; Habanero Mayo; Jalapeno Corn slaw; Wild Mushroom Mole Enchiladas; Duck Enfrijoladas Blancos; Pork Chops in Apple Butter Mole; Chipotle Swordfish Fajitas; Coca Cola Habanero Potatoes; and Pumpkin Flan. Many of the recipes are very simple to make, but there are may ingredients that are not readily available at the local market, and would need to be found at a specialty food store. There are a few additions to the recipes allowing the reader to try alternatives, and a list of terminology in the back of the book referred to by many recipes. Nuevo Tex-Mex, published by Chronicle Books, has a lot for the adventurous eater, but the standard basic food person or Tex-Mex eater would not want this one. It is truly for the serious eater.

Book Description
Andrea Branzi, one of Italy's foremost designers and critics and Nicoletta Branzi, designer of limited edition art clothing for women, introduce the neoprimitive style under the generic title "Domestic Animals." These mysterious creature-objects are oriented to domestic settings, intended to be used or worn, but they are also fetishistic and contemplative, arousing expectations that magic or tribal rituals are about to be performed.
Uniting precision of design with natural raw materials, these objects fashioned from tree trunks, sticks of wood and animal skins joined to steel "bamboo" rods and painted in bright, totemic colors fascinate us. Taken out of their wild settings and tamed by technology, "domestic animals" establish a loving relationship with man, sharing his most private space. We have not seen anything like them in the world of interior, furniture, or fashion design before.
The ideas and creations in Domestic Animals were developed by the Branzis over several years, and can be understood as a metaphor of the relationship that links man to a number of animal and technical presences within the home. The Branzis have created clothing, furniture, and objects of decoration that challenge the conventional notions of habitation: Where living too often takes place in empty spaces marked out by couches they have introduced an environment of archetypal symbols and materials that invite a new way of inhabiting the home. Andrea Branzi lives and works in Milan where he is Educational Director of Domus Academy and Editorial Director of MODO. His last book, The Hot House: Italian New Wave Design, is an MIT Press paperback.
Book Description
Inspired Designs covers the whole range of traditional crafts made in Japan, both historic and contemporary. Starting with a description of the land of Japan, stretching from Siberian forests to the sub-tropical islands of Okinawa, and its natural materials: animal, vegetable, and mineral.
Customer Reviews:
For all persons interested in Japanese traditional art.......2007-09-24
Michael Dunn's vast knowledge and expertise of Japanese applied arts takes the reader on a unique journey of image and space. Rich in sophistication and full of vivid photos, Dunn writes about the Japnese sense of simplicity. The selected works represent a glimpse of Japanese treasures often kept from public view, thereby making Inspired Design a book that must be read by anyone interested in understanding the history and tradition of Japanese artisitc expression. Tremendous effort was taken to show how applied arts have evolved as Japanese craftmen refined their techniques. It is an exquisit book appropriate for the novice as well as those possessing deep knowledge of Japan.

Book Description
Grown throughout the world, curcurbits include cucumbers, gourds, muskmelons, pumpkins, squashes, and watermelons, and represent one of the most important groups of horticultural food plants. Similar to other volumes in the series, this book gives a scientific introduction to the biology and production of cucurbits in a way that is accessible to non-specialists. It covers production in both greenhouses and in the open field, in both developing and industrialized countries. The book provides a complete and succinct review, suitable for students of horticulture as well as scientifically-inclined growers.

Book Description
Many vegetable crops represent high value products, and so it is essential to have a clear understanding of the physiology that lies behind their successful production, as this enables the crop to be managed in the most effective way. The first section of this valuable book takes a general look at the key stages during the growth of the plant and also looks at what can influence those stages. The second section is a detailed consideration of each of the major crops, with each chapter discussing the physiological aspects of vegetable growth, the induction of the reproductive structure, reproductive growth, senescence, and any physiological disorders. Leading workers from the USA and Europe have been brought together in this one volume to produce a valuable reference source for advanced students of horticulture and crop production, research workers, teachers, and all concerned with plant physiology.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book to understand the physiologhy of vegetables.......2000-04-04
This book is one of the best vegetable physiology books I have ever read. First couple of chapters provide you with complete understanding of basic vegetable physiology, where as later chapters deal with major vegetable crops individually. It is a very good and valuable source of information for students majoring in horticulture as well as researchers. As an horticulturist, I am planning to use this book as a textbook for my "the principles of growing vegetables" course which I will be teaching soon.

Book Description
This is the first book to review the chemistry and biochemistry of fruits and vegetables. It addresses the highly topical questions of the role of fresh fruits and vegetables in a healthy well balanced diet, and in the prevention of cancer and coronary diseases. Recent advances in genetic engineering and in the chemistry and biochemistry of fruit and vegetables have radically changed our understanding of the mechanisms underlying these processes, and the potential for modification of the products themselves. The main focus of the book is on the secondary metabolites which are responsible for quality characteristics including colour, aroma, and flavour; their nutritional importance and role in the prevention of cancer and cardiovascular diseases. The book explores how the different post-harvest technological treatments to which these commodities are submitted can cause changes in secondary metabolism, with consequences for the quality of the product.

Book Description
Additional Information: All of the basic principles governing postharvest physiology are discussed - from the cellular and subcellular structure of harvested products to metabolic alterations and changes in biochemical constituents. Sections emphasizing the transient state of harvested products and the environmental factors that modulate the rate of change are thoroughly discussed. Factors that control the successful postharvest transportation, storage, and handling of products at both the wholesale and retail level are covered in depth.
The text is a must for fruit/flower/vegetable/grain/turf/ornamental growers, packers, shippers, buyers, wholesalers, retailers, agricultural scientists, libraries, agricultural organizations, and avid gardeners.
Book Description
This work addresses parents whose children believe themselves to be attracted sexually to persons of the same sex, and it involves many aspects of the complex issues surrounding homosexuality and the homosexual movement. Renowned scholars in scripture, dogmatic and moral theology, philosophy, canon and civil law, pastoral theology, and psychology and psychiatry address the many aspects of the subject with care, sensitivity, and clarity. Although this work is written by Catholics and aimed principally at a Catholic audience, much of what is written is applicable to parents of any religious persuasion.
After an introductory essay that sets the cultural stage for the present, the work is broken down into parts on science ("The Biological Truth about Homosexuality" by Jeffrey Satinover, "The Gay Deception" by Joseph Nicolosi, and "Does Homosexuality Nullify a Marriage?" by Msgr. Cormac Burke), morality ("Scripture and Homosexuality" by Kevin E. Miller, "The Theology of Hetero- and Homosexuality," by Benedict Ashley, o.p., and "An Intrinsically Disordered Inclination" by John Finnis), law ("'Life Partners' Legislation" by Anthony Cardinal Bevilacqua, "Domestic Partners Legislation" by the late John Cardinal O'Connor, and "Same-Sex Marriage: Our Final Answer?" by Gerard V. Bradley), pastoral considerations ("The Teaching of the Church" by Helen Hull Hitchcock, "Calling One's Self 'Gay' or 'lesbian' Clouds One's Self-Perception" by Alan P. Medinger, and "Questions and Answers for Parents of Persons with Same-Sex Attractions" by John F. Harvey, osfs).
Also enclosed is a transcript of the misguided "Always Our Children" video and an essay on this revision by Fr. Harvey.

Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2002-03-24
The book consists of a long introduction written by Inger Brodey, discussing Soseki's works and life, and devoting some attention to the work translated in the body of the book: Soseki's "Travels in Manchuria and Korea". This book has never before been translated into English, unfortunately for good reason. Brodey mentions in the introduction that Japanese critics have generally not been very friendly to the work, deriding it as being a work mainly about Soseki's daily petty concerns and personal health as he travels through Manchuria. (The narration ends before Soseki reached Korea. No-one would be surprised, I think, if Soseki had been disappointed with his own work and decided to end it early since it was achieving nothing of real value.) These were my sentiments exactly; its narrative is tedious and lacking in any development.
I myself am a great admirer of Soseki's works and literary achievements, but this book will add nothing to his reputation and will be ignored.
