What life and death were like during the "Great War".......2001-05-23
Clare Gass was a nurse with the rank of lieutenant, serving with the Canadian Army Medical Corps in France during World War I for four long years. She documented her daily experiences from her military training in 1915 to her return from Europe in 1918. She had a gift for recording the sights, sounds, and smells of war, and in addition to her nursing duties, found time to explore the countryside around the hospital and took photographs as well. Ardently recommended for students of twentieth century military history, medical history, women's history, and unique autobiographies, The War Diary Of Clare Gass, 1915-1918 offers a unique, eye-witness, "window through time" to what life and death were like during the "Great War" as seen through the eyes of a battlefield nurse.
Book Description
Einstein's Dreams meets Tuesdays with Morrie in Leonard Mlodinow's touching memoir about his mentor, the brilliant physicist Richard Feynman. As a young physicist, Leonard Mlodinow looked for guidance from his mentor, the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman. Drawing on transcripts from their meetings during their time together at Cal Tech, Mlodinow shares Feynman's provocative thoughts and observations. At once a moving portrait of a friendship and an affecting account of Feynman's final, creative years, FEYNMAN'S RAINBOW celebrates the inspiring legacy of one of the greatest thinkers of our time.
Download Description
A memoir of how an ongoing relationship with Richard Feynman at Caltech inspired the author to a deeper understanding of both his own creative imagination and the nature of humanity itself. The book will include extensive transcripts of Feynman's conversations with the author.FEYNMAN'S RAINBOW tells the story of a young physicist trying to find his place in the world, and of the famous, old, and dying physicist whose wisdom helped him. It is also the story of Richard Feynman's last years, his rivalry with fellow Nobel laureate Murray Gell-Mann, and the beginnings of string theory.

Feynman's Rainbow.......2007-07-29
EXCELLENT!!! Gives the layman a look inside the world of Physics research, while presenting a life-lesson theme that transcends science. A great read for both science and non-science readers. I'm a Physics teacher, and the reason I love this book has absolutely NOTHING to do with science. I'm making it required reading for my Physics classes!!
Feynman as seen by a peer.......2007-05-18
Written by a physicist who spent a year in an office on the same floor as Feynman and Murray Gell-Man, this book provides yet another view of Feynman and the love-hate relationship that existed between him and Gell-Man, two of the finest physicists of the 20th Century. It is interesting to compare this view with the one provided by the letters collected by his daughter, Michelle, Perfectly Reasonable Deviations From The Beaten Track: The Letters Of Richard P. Feynman and the excellent, but hard to find, collection of essays written by other peers."Most of the Good Stuff:" Memories of Richard Feynman.
Feynman on Life and the Joy of Physics.......2007-03-16
Richard Feynman and Gell-Man Murray are two towering figures in 20th Century Physics. The book begins with the writer's arrival at Caltech as a fresh postdoc with a PhD from Berkeley in the 1980s. In this little autobiographical book, the author writes about his experiences at Caltech focusing on his interactions with Feynman and Murray - their characters and rivalry. Physics take a back seat in this book. Instead, the author attempts to tell a very human (and sometimes sad) story about himself, Feynman and Murray. I find this book interesting for two reasons. First, the author shares his experience about the insecurities that many PhD graduates have about their ability to do meaningful research work after the PhD (especially when one's PhD work was considered important enough to land a Caltech postdoc). Second, it provides a few glimpses of what Feynman and Murray were like at close range - human beings observed on a daily basis (and at their natural habitat). Overall, I cannot help but get the feeling that Feynman comes across as a more 'humane' person than Murray in this book. The writer doesn't apologize for his bias towards Feynman and he does gives examples of Murray's generosity (e.g. his support and belief on Schwartz who toiled for years with the String Theory). He repeatedly emphasizes on the different styles and outlook (life philosophy) of Feynman and Murray. Feynman is more interested in interesting problems and derives tremendous joy from doing physics. Murray, the smart one who revels in demonstrating his diverse knowledge. At the end, the writer favors Feynman's approach to life partly because of his own interests and inclination - towards writing. For it was Feynman who advocated the pursuit of things that truly brings joy. This is a book that would interest readers who enjoy reading about the lives of eminent scientists especially Feynman.
Thought on Feynman's Rainbow.......2006-12-04
I recently read the book Feynman's Rainbow. I really enjoyed this book and I thought it was very interesting. I learned about quantum chromodynamics and the electromagnetic force. I alo learned about Murray Gell-mann's ideas about quarks. I also learned about Joyhn Schawartz's string theory and the thoughts that Richard Feynman had on them. Leonard Mlodinow had an interesting encouter with Richard Feynman while they were both faculty at Caltech. The author used very personal experiences to tell his story of his experience at Caltech. The book keeps the reader engaged and I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in physics or Richard Feynman.

Honest, Entertaining, and Informative.......2006-05-25
Because this book flows like a well-paced novel, I was easily able to finish it in one day (something I almost never do).
In addition to being an excellent storyteller, Mlodinow is very honest and candid in a way that I found sincere and endearing. He describes well the difficulties faced by a talented and promising young adult trying to form his worldview and choose his life/career goals and direction. Many people, not just budding physicists, will be able to relate to this, and indeed I think that is the main value of the book.
In the course of the book, he presents some physics discussions and reflections on the philosophy of science/physics, and of course he also provides some information about Feynman (and Gell-Mann), but none of this is in great depth, so it's best regarded as "bonus" material.
Overall, I can highly recommend this book to anyone with a little background in modern physics, and some familiarity with Feynman and Gell-Mann's biographies and work. The book is very enjoyably written, so reading it is time well spent. I enjoyed the book so much that I will be checking out Mlodinow's other books also.
Product Description
Nobel Prize-winner Richard Feynman was not only a great scientist and a great teacher, but also an idiosyncratic individual whose penetrating wit illuminated the world for all who came in contact with him, either in person or in his books. FEYNMAN'S RAINBOW recounts the relationship between Feynman and Mlodinow, an intimidated young physicist who comes to Caltech during Feynman's last years and makes the elder man his mentor. The memoir gives readers an intimate look at Feynman's scientific imagination and his rivalry with fellow Nobel laureate Murray Gell-Mann. Mlodinow shows how Feynman helped him to find and nourish his own creativity, and includes extensive transcripts of their conversations, which roam over physics, art, love, happiness, and God. FEYNMAN'S RAINBOW is a moving journey of the heart and mind.

Thank You Dr. Peck for the edgeeee....be.....cation :) .......2005-07-19
This is a great book for learning and opening up your mind. There are two parts in the book that are my favorites. Reading about the people he cared so much about. Part Two in the book "Spiritual perspectives ", ...where ever you are with God this whole book will lighten your Soul and even surprise you. If you need help with pronunciation go to www.m-w.com
Another Masterpiece By Scott Peck.......2003-09-27
There's a reason Dr. Peck is one of my favorite authors, and this book once more demonstrates why. Denial of the Soul is a brave and important book that carefully and objectively explores the entire issue of euthanasia from both a medical and spiritual standpoint. Frequently touching and always well reasoned, once again he has produced a masterpiece that should give the thoughtful reason plenty to digest as he or she struggles to decide for themselves how they feel about the idea of terminating a human life-especially their own. This is much more than simply a book about the pros and cons of "pulling the plug" on the terminally ill, but explores a whole range of questions regarding hospice care, suicide and mercy killing, doctor assisted euthanasia, pain management, and quality of life issues (his chapter on pain management alone should be required reading for every first year medical student and nurse trainee.) His spiritual perspective on the issue-which he covers in some depth in the second half of the book-is more subjective and problematic, but he does manage to successfully bring God into the debate, for which I consider him among the bravest of medical professionals. His no-nonsense approach and personal antidotes make this one of those books you'll be thinking about long after you've read the last words.
As is true of all of Peck's books, however, I found myself enthusiastically agreeing with 95% of everything he wrote and vehemently disagreeing with the remaining 5%. He approaches the spiritual aspect of the debate from a purely liberal Christian perspective (and the political elements of it from a similar perspective) and so makes some statements that I couldn't help but challenge. For example, he considers the purpose of life to experience the emotional and physical pain necessary to mature us spiritually and, hence, considers any effort to end ones own life an attempt to short-circuit the process. He considers the dying process to be an important part of the learning process and gives many examples from his personal experiences that show the positive results of doing the "hard work" involved in dying. However, he admits himself that many people-in fact, perhaps most-seem to gain nothing from the experience and leave this world kicking and screaming, seemingly challenging the notion that the process of dying is inherently useful as a tool of spiritual growth. Also, his contention that the soul "belongs" to God since he is its creator not only clearly betrays his thoroughly Christian perspective, but is unsubstantiated by anything more than his own assumption. I was a co-creator in the creation of my sons but I never considered them my property because of it. As a consequence, I don't follow his logic in this regard.
My only significant criticism of the book is the ending, in which he seems to waffle all over the place. After 200 pages of building his case, I was disappointed to see him retreat with the excuse that he was going to let the reader decide for themselves on the issue, but then I guess that's the point of any work of this nature. The decision when and how to end one's own life is a personal choice that can be made only by those who find themselves in that situation. It can't be made by religion or government or even by science, and that, after all, is the truth of all life. Peck gives us something to think about, but we must ultimately make the final decision which is, I suspect, exactly the way God wants us to play it. In any case, thank you Dr. Peck for another little gem of light to help us illuminate an otherwise horribly confused world.
A New Perspective.......2000-06-01
Do you fear death or the dying process? This book will address that. Are you young and in relatively good health, and have a hard time feeling compassion on people who are older and/or less agile? This book can increase your compassion and patience. Are you entering the last few years of your life and want to "finish well"? This book can help you do that. This book is for everyone; because everyone will deal with death and dying in their life. Denial of the Soul demonstrates Peck's medical knowlege combined with his understanding of people and how we deal with and fear physical pain, and this book forces its reader to think about their own mortality, grapple with it, and hopefully come to accept it. Peck shows that death isn't something to live in fear of, but that the dying process is a beautiful way to learn how to depend on other people and on God--and that the dying process doesn't have to be wrought with physical pain. It's really worth it for everyone to read this book at some point, and I would agree with the other reviewers that it should be sooner rather than later.
Searching for the soul.......2000-04-09
This book addresses the question of euthanasia in America. It presents the spiritual issues surrounding death and life - issues which the Peck feels are not fully considered when considering euthanasia.
He distinguishes between pain and suffering - how pain can and should be alleviated, and why it should not be the cause of seeking a quick death.
His book is important for those who will face death, either themselves or in others. It is a brave attempt to clear the conflict regarding euthanasia.
Best work Peck has done in years........1998-09-28
Denial of the Soul is a must read for every person and it is one of those books you must read before you need the information. The first third of the book is devoted to taking a cut at the medical profession for not providing 'proper pain contol' of terminal patients. The last two thirds deals with the subtitle in an interesting way that will keep me thinking about it the rest of my life. He starts with a definition of the soul which is complex (typical of Peck) and requires considerable discussion to make it "real". He goes on to explore the subject but, for me, the most interesting part of the book is his "side trips" into death and dying and life! I found the wisdom great for a man that is trying his best to face his own death in the not too distant future. (Peck is about 63 or so) Included are some "gray rules" for deciding if the plug should or should not be pulled that are very useful. Every person that is alive will face the issues in this book for yourself or your loved ones. It is a must to help you decide many answers and there will be some you can not answer till you have to. Peck says that some of the greatest learning for you and for loved ones can take place in the process of dying. I know this to be true from what I experienced with my own father's death. Scotty has done a great service to mankind, again, with this book. Jerry Hampton
Book Description
From the author of The Foods of Italy and The Foods of Tuscany comes a gorgeous book on the fantastic food of Italy's islands-- Sicily and Sardinia and their small neighbors, Elba, Giglio, Capri and Ischia.
Giuliano Bugialli, one of the world's leading Italian food authorities, has turned his attention to these magical places where the food is varied and unlike what is found in any other Italian region. The choices range from the seafood of the rocky coasts to the rich meats from inland, and the fabulous herbs and vegetables, cheeses, breads and desserts that are everywhere. Geography and history are responsible for such exotic accents as saffron-- Sicily's is the finest in the world-- and almonds, jasmine and honey.
Here, then, are recipes for lamb cooked with saffron and artichokes, sweet peas with mint, calamari stuffed with pasta, tuna in a vinegar sauce, and gelato scented with jasmine. Bugialli also offers photo essays on Palermo's tumultuous Vucciria, one of the world's outstanding food markets; local festivals; tuna fishing off the coast of Sicily; and the baking of the ancient bread called carta da musica.
The glorious photography was made on location, with ancient ruins, fishing boats, rugged landscapes, cathedrals, village streets and bustling markets providing the settings for the food. The photographer, John Dominis, also collaborated with the author on the hugely successful Foods of Italy, Foods of Tuscany and Bugialli on Pasta.

Gorgeous Cookbook with Wonderful Recipes.......2005-08-10
This cookbook is stunning. It is done in the oversized format with lots of pictures and details. Mr. Bugialli gives information about the food and the people. I think I went through this book 2-3 times just looking at it and reading it before I even looked at the recipes. Good stuff in here, especially if you like seafood. (What else would people on an island eat?)Some of the items may be difficult, if not impossible to find, but he gives easy substitutions for most of them.
Incredible!.......2002-07-30
If you are familiar with the Sardinian area and the food of the land, you will LOVE this book. It is beautifully written and the pictures will astound you. Take the time to buy and enjoy this book, you'll have it for a long time.
Intense, clean, honest flavors - and almost dairy-free!.......1997-09-04
My household is full of eaters who are allergic to dairy products - but are Italian and love Italian food. Bugialli's book on Sardinian cooking saved the day. This book lets US-based cooks, using common (or easy to find) ingredients, create authentic Italian dishes that taste wonderful and are virtually dairy-free. The desserts section, of course, relies fairly heavily on dairy products. But the flavors provided by the main courses are so intense and clean, you can skip dessert and still be completely satisfied. Grazie, Signor Bugialli

Great book for the beginer in origami. Many great and fun projects.
What a fun book!!!.......2005-11-24
This is SUCH a cute book! What a great idea to package the models, directions and paper all in one book. The choice of models range from the basic to the more complex (for those serious folders) and the paper (included in the back) is FABULOUS--from the super colorful to the super fun. I am almost through the whole book and am buying a few more copies as gifts for Christmas.
If you liked her calendar, you will totally love this book. I hope she is working on Volume 2.

Trade in your lawn . . ........2006-05-20
. . . And plant a verge. At the National Wildflower Institute here in Austin, there are demonstration plots for front yard plantings. One of the plots is planted with natives, the other with standard suburban St. Augustine-grass-based fare. Now, these are not large plots, much smaller than the average front yard. And the results are startling: ALL the birds are in the native-planted plots. ALL the butterflies (and there are many of different species) are in the native-planted plots. The standard suburban plots are like Rachel Carson nightmares: silent, sterile. Read Wasowski. All politics are local, and saving your ecosystem can start in your own beautiful, non-labor-intensive, non-water-sucking yard.
A straightforward guide especially for gardeners.......2004-10-12
Now in an expanded and significantly updated second edition, Requiem For A Lawnmower: Gardening In A Warmer, Drier World by landscape designer Sally Wasowski and gardening author and commentator Andy Wasowski is a straightforward guide especially for gardeners and landscapers who are coming to realize that water can bea limited resource. Focusing on low-maintenance native plants that do not need toxic chemicals to protect them from other vegetation, offer havents for endangered wildlife, and conserve precious water, Requiem For A Lawnmower is a refreshing alternative that focuses on a wide variety of hardy plants from saguaro to goldenrod to much more, as well as more general insights to the advantages of an ecologically sound landscape. Highly recommended.

INSIGHT INTO KINSHIP CARE.......2000-06-20
RELATIVES RAISING CHILDREN: AN OVERVIEW OF KINSHIP CARE provides the reader with excellent descriptions of the many issues found in the growing phenomena of family members raising their grandchildren or other relative children. Although written for the professional, the format is easy to follow and very thorough. The authors present the many possible prespectives of the child, the relative caregiver and the parent in this difficult situation. They also provide intervention techniques for the professional.
As a child care specialist, I have been approached by people looking for help and information as they deal with relative care. Since I am not a therapist, this book provides a base of knowledge and has given me some insight on what referrals might be helpful for these individuals. Additionally, I will be recommending it to families interested in further in-depth information.

Ben Nicholson Rediscovered.......2000-01-23
It is no small pleasure to view once again the cool, elegant work of Ben Nicholson. Unlike many of our neon palettes of today, Nicholson's tones were often subtle and delicate, especially in his reliefs. He seldom discussed the subject matter of his works, since it was the process that fascinated him. Lynton describes him as "a child-man, whose best joys and fullest sense of being alive came from his delight in the perfect flight of a ball or a bird."
Nicholson was self-effacing, witty and urbane. His world was one of joy in light and line. Lynton's book beautifully brings us into that world.

Book Description
Ben Nicholson's work reflects the concerns of a generation educated and influenced by Daniel Libeskind and John Hejduk but establishes a highly individual search for rigor, precision, and craftsmanship in architecture. Here he analyzes the structure and form of everyday objects such as appliances and bread tags to construct the theoretical and physical framework for an Appliance House, a shelter from Sub-Urban life, a receptacle for all the forgotten objects of society. This book brings together numerous sketches, pencil drawings, color collages, and models that provide a detailed account of this unique fouryear project.
Ben Nicholson is Studio Professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology. He completed Appliance House as a Fellow of the Chicago Institute for Architecture and Urbanism.

Engrossing, true, mysterious, auto-biographic experiences.......1998-11-03
How can one write a review that could compare with the author's real life experiences. I met Mario through my friend Hal Stephens who wrote the introduction .. I then traveled with Hal up and down the West Coast to book dealers and museums .. their reception was highly enthusiastic. The Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC reviewed the book for its 50th Anniversary of World War II but it was submitted too late for their collection .. unfortunate for those who would have wished for a daily recording of the misfortunes of those on the Death March and the Death Camps. Recollection of experiences is worthwhile, but the daily recording is more significant. My uncle was a POW in Germany; his reading of the book brought home memories that had long been suppressed. Comparisons with the Halocaust survivors' stories can easily be made. Life and Death are with us always, but how one survives Life is always a compelling story. Mario's life span of misadventure was summarized in the Death March and Death Camps. A truly engrossing real life adventure. Reviewed by Dave Pryor.

A man's fight through the Battan Death March.......1998-04-12
Mario Machi was involved in the famous Battan Death March in the Philippines during World War II. He kept a diary that could have gotten him killed after he was taken prisoner by the Japanese. This story explores the times he spent as a prisoner of war, and his life after the war. It is a fascinating story of compassion and grace.
RETIRED OFFICERS' REVIEW.......1996-10-27
Under the Rising Sun is an extraordinary account of Mario
Machi's struggle for survival, an account that few people,
even his closest friends knew about. When the war ended he
was freed from Bilibid Prison in the Philippines and returned
to San Francisco, finished his education, and for 22 years
taught junior high school in the small town in California.
Mario says he did not write Under the Rising Sun with the
intent of producing a war story. For fifty years has kept his
thoughts hidden, from his many students and from even his
closest friends. He kept to himself the memories of prisoners
who marched side by side with him, some too weak to continue,
who dropped by the roadside, only to be bayoneted for failing to keep up. Somehow Mario managed to survive the brutality, the hunger, the thirst, the disease, and the dreadful feeling that he had been abandoned. Somehow 10,000 others died on that march, some 178 men for every mile they tread, but Mario Machi lived.
What makes this book so extraordinary is that it is not
simply an account of an ex-soldier recalling dreadful acts
that happened long ago. Mario's account of the Bataan Death
March was recorded as it was happening, in a diary that he managed to keep on the march. Each day, often under actual heavy gun fire, he recorded what he saw and witnessed, first hand, and most miraculously, this diary--a written confession that would certainly have meant immediate death had it fallen into enemy hands--has survived to this day.
This book is for both the generations who remember Bataan and for those who have yet to hear.
On his return to the United States in 1945 Mario Machi was
awarded the Bronze Star for the work he did in the camps. Now,
