4 out of 5 stars Easy, Accurate Historical Read.......2002-07-24

The author does an excellent job laying out the fine details of G.I life during WWII. He takes a personal view of his life's adventure, both positive and negative, from post high school days until the end of the war. I loved his detail of the food, people, transprotation, landscapes and daily adventures of a G.I that never saw action. His plain spoken prose took me to England and Paris in 1944-45 and for that I am grateful.

Physicist and science writer Bruce Schechter's biography of legendary Hungarian mathematician Paul Erdös is an engaging portrait, warm and intimate, bringing this strange, happy man to life. Schechter's focus is quite a bit tighter, and more traditionally biographical, than Paul Hoffman's in The Man Who Loved Only Numbers. Here, we get to see Erdös's brief childhood transform quickly into a carefree adolescence of solving difficult math problems with his circle of brilliant friends--uniquely encouraged by a country that valued the contributions of mathematics in a way that has never been equaled. Fleeing the Holocaust, Erdös never settled down, instead traveling from place to place, showing up on the doorsteps of other mathematicians with his few possessions and an open mind. During his career, Erdös published more papers than any other mathematician in history. Most of the papers were collaborations:

For Erdös, the mathematics that consumed most of his waking hours was not a solitary pursuit but a social activity. One of the great mathematical discoveries of the twentieth century was the simple equation that two heads are better than one.... That radical transformation of how mathematics is created is the result of many factors, not the least of which was the infectious example set by Erdös.

Schechter spoke with many of Erdös's collaborators to complete this biography, which reveals the odd mathematician as charming, opinionated, and completely dependent upon the kindness of others. Schechter not only tells his fascinating story, but introduces some intriguing mathematics problems (with easy-to-understand explanations) to show readers why Erdös loved the elegance of numbers more than anything else in the world. --Therese Littleton

Book Description

Paul Erdõs, one of the greatest mathematicians of the twentieth century, and certainly the most eccentric, was internationally recognized as a prodigy by age seventeen. Hungarian-born Erdõs believed that the meaning of life was to prove and conjecture. His work in the United States and all over the world has earned him the titles of the century's leading number theorist and the most prolific mathematician who ever lived. Erdõs's important work has proved pivotal to the development of computer science, and his unique personality makes him an unforgettable character in the world of mathematics. Incapable of the smallest of household tasks and having no permanent home or job, he was sustained by the generosity of colleagues and by his own belief in the beauty of numbers.

Witty and filled with the sort of mathematical puzzles that intrigued Erdõs and continue to fascinate mathematicians today, My Brain Is Open is the story of this strange genius and a journey in his footsteps through the world of mathematics, where universal truths await discovery like hidden treasures and where brilliant proofs are poetry.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect man of knowledge.......2007-02-06

If one has to define a perfect man of knowledge, one would come up with someone who is a genius, has done pioneering work in several areas of his domain, is friendly and sociable towards all (especially 'epsilons' or children), finds material possessions as a hassle and spends all his time doing what he loves best. In other words, someone just like Paul Erdos.

In this short and engaging biography, the author manages to inform and entertain at the same time. Apart from the life-story of Erdos himself which is fascinating, what I also enjoyed are the anecdotes on other greats like Gauss and Ramanujan. And there is just enough math in the book (explained very well) to interest us so that we get a glimpse of what lies at the heart of it all.

I cannot think of a better gift than this book to be given to any child to provide inspiration as well as a 'cool' introduction to mathematics. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars N is a Number: True Story of the Travelling Mathematician.......2004-07-12

+++++

The four-word title of this book is "My Brain Is Open." If you keep the first word and form a word from the first letter of the three remaining words, you get "My BIO." And that's exactly what this book is. This ten chapter book, by Dr. Bruce Schechter, is a BIOgraphy of Dr. Paul Erdos (pronounced "Air-dish").

Erdos (1913 to 1996) is said to have been one of the greatest mathematicians of the twentieth century (especially in number theory, the branch of math concerned with the properties of integers) as well as the most eccentric. Throughout this book, we also learn of the many others who collaborated with Erdos on his many published mathematical papers. (He wrote or collaborated on more than 1500 papers with over 450 collaborators.)

This book is also filled with the sorts of mathematical puzzles that intrigued Erdos and continue to fascinate mathematicians today. Schechter does a good job of explaining these puzzles (with the aid of diagrams, tables, and graphs) so the reader does not have to worry that these problems will be too difficult to understand.

The reader is also taken on a tour of mathematics. We are introduced to such people as Pythagoras and his famous theorem, Karl Gauss who, when ten years old, was able to add up the numbers from 1 to 100 in less than half a minute, and Bernhard Reimann and his work on prime numbers.

Erdos was born in Hungry. By age seventeen he had gained international recognition as a prodigy. He eventually left Hungry and went to the Institute of Advanced Study at Princton in the United States. (Einstein was the institutes most famous resident then.) Because of his politics, he was exiled from the U.S. for a decade. From this point beginning in the 1950s, he became "the Bob Hope of mathematics" or "the travelling mathematician."

Since Erdos was constantly travelling, he had no home or job but still managed to meet with math colleagues all over the world. He had all his belongings in a suitcase and his mathematical papers in a bag when he arrived at their homes. Erdos also depended on the generosity of colleagues to sustain him.

The reader is introduced to Erdos' eccentricities throughout the book. For example, he invented a vocabulary where the U.S. was "Sam" or "Samland" (after Uncle Sam) and the Soviet Union was "Joe" or "Joedom" (after Josef Stalin).

There are more than fifteen black and white photographs found in the middle of this book. These photos span a period from 1916 to 1993.

To get the information needed to write this book, Schechter relied "on the memories of the many people" who met Erdos -- his hundreds of collaborators and friends. That is, he "primarily relied on interviews with many of the people who knew Erdos best." Schechter also "drew heavily" from biographical essays as well as magazine articles about Erdos. He also used the information from the over ninety sources listed in this book's bibliography.

Finally, as I said above, this book does contain mathematical puzzles that intrigued Erdos. Personally, I found these interesting but some readers may find that they interfere with the flow of the book. As well, mathematicians who read this book may question the accuracy of a few of the mathematical concepts that are introduced.

In conclusion, this book invites the reader into the wacky world of mathematical genius Paul Erdos. If you're like me, you'll find this book both comical and enlightening!!

5 out of 5 stars The hidden magic of math.......2004-04-07

Bruce Schechter's book is exceptional. In telling this fascinating story of the eccentric mathematician Paul Erdos, the author manages to convey the recent history of math and capture the magic of this unique art/science. Quite an accomplishment for a book that is so enjoyable to read!

5 out of 5 stars The Remarkable Saga of a Remarkable Man.......2002-06-20

Paul Erdos was a unique individual. He never had a permanent residence; instead, he traveled from one mathematics conference to another with his few earthly belongings in two suitcases, one which held a few changes of clothes, the other a treasure of mathematics papers. He collaborated with mathematicians everywhere; the extent of these collaborations is so immense it gave rise to the Erdos number, which is this: You have an Erdos number of 1 if you co-authored a paper with Erdos, your Erdos number is 2 if you co-authored a paper with someone who jointly wrote a paper with Erdos, etc. About 500 people have an Erdos number of 1 and well over 5000 hold the Erdos number of 2. Erdos numbers go as high as 16 and the number of people with an Erdos number is said to be well above 100,000.

Stories about Erdos abound. It is rumored that he walked into a classroom, saw some writing on a chalkboard and asked if this was mathematics. Upon receiving an affirmative answer, he then asked what the various symbols were. Immediately after the explanations were given, Erdos took chalk in hand and in two lines proved the hypothesis that had baffled other mathematicians for some time, and this was in a field of mathematics that Erdos was largely unfamiliar with! Another story had Erdos taking a train fron Boston to New York; across the aisle sat a beautiful female who said "hello" to him. One thing led to another; by the time the train arrived the two of them had written a paper!

This book covered much of the life and mathematics of Paul Erdos; much of the mathematics in the book is number theory because it is a topic that is easy for anyone to understand yet difficult to prove. A typical example is Goldbach's conjecture, which says: "Any even number greater than 2 can be expressed as the sum of two prime numbers." Sounds simple enough and logical; 4=2+2, 6=3+3, 8=3+5,10=5+5 or 3+7,... The problem has been around for about 300 years but as yet lacks a proof. Other mathematics topics touched upon include Ramsey theory, the division of a square into unequal squares, and Godel's Incompleteness Theory. The book also shows the strange language of Erdos, in which women were 'bosses', men were 'slaves', the United States was 'Sam' (from Uncle Sam), and the Soviet Union was 'Joe' (Stalin), to list a few of his own variations of English.

This book is easy to read, even if the reader has only a high-school background in mathematics. If you are curious about mathematics and/or human nature, you will find this book of great interest. I highly recommend this book.

4 out of 5 stars Sympathetic insight into the world of mathematicians.......2002-04-05

I enjoyed this book and thought that Bruce Schechter did well to get across the humanity of the man and as well as some of his ideas. Inevitably, the mathematics contained in the book will seem a bit hard going for some but Schechter handles it delicately and manages a fair balance.

The book is written in an approachable style and has a deliberately non-critical and inspirational tone. I recommend that it should be put in the hands of any teenager who is thinking of studying mathematics at university. If she/he does not like the ideas and characters described, he might be happier choosing another major!

It really lived up to my expectations! Dr. Acredolo and Dr. Goodwyn once again give great suggestions and loving guidance to help parents tend to their little flowers.

5 out of 5 stars Owner of a dance school finds this book indispensable!.......2005-08-30

Most of my new dance students are 3 years old and I have seen a wide range of behaviors during their first class. I continually adjust my content to make the classes more appealing but I was at a loss on how the teacher's behavior could better contribute. Having read this book, I now know that childrens' imaginations blossom around the middle of their second year and "the good news is that this ability enables them to have fun pretending to be firemen or ballerinas." But this same imagination causes them to be fearful of new situations "where the chances of encountering something unexpected and scary increase markedly." I now have my teachers greet each child warmly and better explain the dance class before we begin.

      5 out of 5 stars Great recipes - yummy.......2005-04-11

My uncle, a culinary arts instructor, gave me this book when I first moved out on my own after college and commented to him that I didn't know how to cook. This book is full of great easy recipes. Some take more than 15 minutes (they start the clock once all the veggies are chopped, chicken cut into thin strips to cook faster, or some start with cooked rice), but all are relatively easy and tasty. Some of my favorite recipes are the black bean chicken soup, the curry one with fruit (I think I made it with apricots), the chicken corn skillet, and the stir fry one with the sesame oil and snow peas. I apologize - I don't have the book in front of me so I'm not getting the names exactly right. These recipes are good, easy, and many are reasonably healthy (or can be adapted, as someone said, to be more healthy). This book is far better than the celebrity Food Network 30-minute meal books. Also, this is a nice "gourmet: cookbook in that it occasionally requires an unusual ingredient, but most recipes don't require a trip to the store to search for really unusual and pricey ingredients. Many recipes involve things that a lot of people might have on hand. Also, some of the recipes offer a substitution suggestions (e.g. other vegetables that work well with the same sauces), which also makes shopping for them or cooking with what you have on hand easy.

5 out of 5 stars fabulous recipes, fairly quick.......2002-07-31

This is a GREAT cookbook. I own quite a few, and most are only useful for a few recipes, or only for one type of food, etc. But the most negative thing I can say about any of the recipes I've tried from this book has been that it was okay (and that was only one recipe!). Among my favorites are the black bean and peppers with chicken and rice, the pesto, pasta and grapes chicken salad (sounds a little strange, but is EXCELLENT), chili chicken and rice, and the black bean and chicken soup. This cookbook has inspired me to try some more ethnic cooking without being worried I'll completely mess it up! The recipes are mostly low to moderate fat, and often encourage the use of various beans, whole grains, etc. I've frequently substituted brown rice for other rices, whole wheat pasta for regular pasta, etc. with really delicious results.

The only thing I will say is that the 15 minute part for a lot of the recipes I like most is pretty optimistic... but there are some that are genuinely 15 minute recipes (the chicken and corn skillet is a fast and tasty meal).

Definitely try this cookbook - the recipes are fun, encourage you to experiment a bit, and are really good. It would make a great gift for someone who has mastered the true basics of cooking (how to pick out produce, boil water, grill plain chicken, etc.) and is looking for a versatile but fast set of recipes to enjoy.
      Highly recommended!

I have very much enjoyed using this cookbook! every single recipe I have tried is very good, and some are far superior to meals I have tasted in fine restaurants. the format is easy to use, the recipes are easy to follow. there are many tips that are extremely helpful. the book also lists calories and fat per meal, which is useful.
I will report that there are a few meals that take more than fifteen minutes to prepare, however the recipes are very fun to make. I wish there were more pictures, although those in there are very accurate to the actual results.

      highly recommended.

            2 out of 5 stars Disapointing.......2006-05-17

If you are interested in fun, playful cards, then this is not the book for you. Most of the cards in this book are what I would call, "boring." There are a lot better books out there. Save your money.

3 out of 5 stars Just alright, not great.......2006-03-30

I borrowed this from the library and was glad I did, because while it was alright, it was not great. Only a few of the cards made me want to try them out such as the "stained glass effect", quilling. There also better books if you are a beginner to card making.

            3 out of 5 stars Its ok.......2006-01-01

I bought this just starting out, and to be honest. I find more fun stuff to do on-line. How many of us have these supplies to make stained glass looks and special gold stuff. Unless your rich and can afford all these supplies. Don't bother. Search the internet for ideas.

              Book Description

Previously illustrated with black and white photographs, this reference now provides professionals with a colorful guide to the production of commercial foliage crops. Featuring updated and expanded information, including cultural changes, new technological advances, and eight new foliage crops, the guide now covers more than 70 species of foliage appropriate to commercial environments—anthuriums, bromeliads, ferns, bamboos, birds-of-paradise, and African violets. In addition to exploring each plant’s natural habitat, varieties, and propagation, this reference also counsels growers on uses, nutrition, pests, disorders, interior care, and the most common problems affecting these types of foliage. Tables also list leaf analysis rating standards for nutrients for many of the crops discussed.

What do salt, peaches, and carpet have in common? Two things: chances are you have them in your house, and they all have the potential for serious toxicity. Raising Healthy Children in a Toxic World is full of scary eye-openers, but it also includes plenty of ways to improve the well-being and safety of your family at home, work, daycare, or the local park.

The 101 suggestions in the book range far and wide in the search for common sources of toxicity and are further subdivided into areas of special interest. Each chapter has a short list of questions to help you identify which topics to focus on, such as "How old is your house?" and "Does your school have science labs?". Depending on the answer, a list of topic numbers will be of special interest in your hunt for solutions. Chapter topics include food safety (stop using antibiotic washes), household chemicals (don't use mildew-resistant paints), and reproductive risks, so it's also possible to simply flip to the area of greatest concern.

Because of arrangement by topic rather than toxin, easy solutions like giving away poisonous philodendrons and poinsettias are featured right next to suggestions on ripping out carpets and putting down wood floors; chemicals that are known to be instantly deadly are listed right next to potential sources of long-range impact. While the overall range is excellent, the book may be overwhelming to novices in the world of chemicals. --Jill Lightner

This is one of the best books I've read in a long time on the subject of environmental wellness. I recommend it to every person I know that has a child! It frustrates me that this book is hard to find. It's simple enough for the average consumer. It teaches alot-- Important stuff. When my friend told me his daughter has cancer, I urged him to read this book in order to protect her environment while she heals and make her future environment SAFE. PLEASE get this book back on amazon with unlimited availability!

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, very useful.......2003-01-02

I will have to admit that on my first glance at this book, written by two doctors and a public health expert, I felt overwhelmed by its checklists and inspection suggestions to use in our home. Did I really want to know if our home was toxic? Did I want to know if my son's school was a safe place for him to be? I wasn't sure at first, but as is typical for me and other moms I know, my parental guilt got the best of me and I sat down to read this amazingly interesting book.

The environmental checklist at the back of the book proved to be more than just another thing to do; it helped me to focus in on areas of our home where we are at risk of being exposed to toxins.

Did you know, for example, that magic markers that contain xylene can cause your child to experience headaches, dizziness, confusion, and balance and breathing problems? Scented markers can be dangerous in addition because they encourage children to taste them.

The book does contain some good news. For example, olive oil can be effective in treating head lice, therefore avoiding the potential dangers of the more caustic over-the-counter head lice treatments.

Forget about creating a germ free kitchen or bathroom - it can't be done. Using antibacterial, germ killing, sterilizing sprays will rarely result in a germ free environment, even if that were something one would wish to do. Using toxic cleaners simply replaces the germs with a synthetic chemical hazard. Overuse of such products can actually increase the potency of germs that can rise up and revolt against the products themselves. For disinfecting, simple "green" products work and are safe, or a homemade solution of ¼ cup of bleach to a gallon of water will suffice.

I was further surprised to learn that commercial peanut butter might be better for your child than the ground peanut version. This is largely because there are government regulations limiting the amount of aflatoxin, a naturally occurring toxin produced by mold that contaminates peanuts. A child who eats a product with high levels of aflatoxin may develop liver failure. Some fresh ground peanut butters tested at natural food stores were found to have levels higher than the government standards of this dangerous substance.

Raising Healthy Children in a Toxic World has now joined the other reference books that sit on my kitchen counter for a quick thumb through when needed. I recommend other parents add it to their bookshelves as well.

This is the first publication of Agnes Denes's writings. One of the early pioneers of both the environmental art movement and Conceptual art, Denes has investigated the physical and social sciences, philosophy, linguistics, psychology, art history, poetry and music and transformed her explorations into unique works of visual art. Denes is one of the first artists to be involved with the relationship of science to art, and also a pioneer of ecological art. One of the first artists to initiate the environmental art movement, her work involves ecological, cultural, and social issues, and are often monumental in scale. Perhaps best known for Wheatfield -- A Confrontation (1982), a two-acre wheatfield she planted and harvested in downtown Manhattan, a work that addresses human values and misplaced priorities. In 1996 she completed Tree Mountain -- A Living Time Capsule in Finland, a massive earthwork and reclamation project that reaches four hundred years into the future to benefit future generations with a meaningful legacy. In l998 she planted a forest of endangered species in Australia and a cropland in the heart of Caracas, Venezuela.
