Book Description
Paul was born overseas in 1970, a military child. Raised in that environment, it was no surprise when he enlisted for service in 1991. A federally licensed pilot since 1990, Paul jumped at the opportunity, excited at having the chance to fly for the military and for his country. He took the job, received his training, and was sent to Saudi Arabia. It was there that he fell victim to the anti-American terrorist bombing of Khobar Towers in 1996, rendering him comatose. Since that tragic day, Paul has persevered. This is Paul?s story, how he ascended from tragedy to triumph, and the tribulations he experienced in between.

Physics might seem part of an alien culture to most people, but it has touched all our lives, and its byproducts, in the form of nuclear fission, are going to remain with us for many generations to come. It could be argued that the 20th century was the century of theoretical physics. The Genius of Science is, as its subtitle claims, a portrait gallery of 16 of the most interesting and eminent of the international physicists who helped change our view of the world--from Niels Bohr to Eugene Wigner. But the list of characters is much, much larger and interweaves most of the international network of physicists and other prominent scientists of the last century. Author Abraham Pais, an eminent American theoretical physicist and professor at Rockefeller University, has written acclaimed biographies of Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr, two of the greatest scientists of the 20th century. Pais was acquainted with many of the people he writes about, and he often appears in the book as a shadowy figure in the background. Anyone can dip into The Genius of Science anywhere in its pages and be immediately grabbed by both the extraordinary and the ordinary aspects of the lives of these scientists. The author provides plenty of anecdotes, from those about Bohr's pipe-smoking to Robert Oppenheimer's reaction to the first successful atomic bomb test: "... some lines of the Bhagavad Gita went through his mind: I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."
Pais wants to bring life back to these people, but not in any salacious way; he admits to having "never been interested in entering others' bedrooms." If you want psycho-biography or scandal, you will not find it here. But the general reader will get a sense of the trials, tribulations, and excitement of the scientific life. There are plenty of references for those who want to follow up the details, and there's a useful index of characters mentioned in the text. --Douglas Palmer, Amazon.co.uk
Book Description
Abraham Pais is the acclaimed author of the definitive biographies of Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr, two of the twentieth century's greatest scientists. As a distinguished theoretical physicist himself, he was also acquainted with many of the other influential scientists of his time. In this new book, Pais turns his attention to 14 other scientists, all distinguished in their own right, but who had appeared as the supporting cast to his previous biographies. We meet, among others, the famously taciturn Paul Dirac; Max Born, who coined the term 'quantum mechanics'; Wolfgang Pauli, famed for his exclusion principle and known as the conscience of twentieth-century physics; Mitchell Feigenbaum, inventor of chaos theory; and John von Neumann, one of the most influential mathematicians of the century. In addition, and because their work is so relevant to the others discussed, Pais has included chapters on Einstein and Bohr, in each case giving the essence of the man's character and scientific achievement. In each case, Pais presents a blend of the personality and achievements of the scientist, assisted by his deep knowledge of physics and his personal acquaintance with the subject. The result is a unique and illuminating collection of portraits that sheds light on both their personalities and their work and lasting influence on science. It will be read by all those with an interest in the development of science in the twentieth century, from relativity to chaos theory.

A great collection of biographical essays.......2007-10-03
Abraham Pais was a physicist turned science historian, probably best known as the author of the most authoritative biography of Albert Einstein available.
Pais knew personally almost all the important physicists who participated in the quantum revolution. He is also a really honest, coherent, and more generally talented writer. These facts, along with his background in physics, make this book stand out among many, many others.
This is a collection of 16 essays on famous scientists, some quite short (e.g. the one on Weisskopf), some not so short (e.g. the one on Pauli). Almost all of these texts contain a mix of biographical information and description of scientific contributions that feels just right. Pais's stated aim was to describe not only what these people did, but also who they were, and in this he succeeds admirably.
However, Pais has chosen to be constrained by what he calls in his Introduction a "variance in [his] level of acquaintance" with important physicists. This leads to what may be termed this book's "drawbacks":
1) In some cases one is left "wanting more".
2) There are a number of very famous physicists (Werner Heisenberg comes to mind) that are prominent in their absence (apart from some second-order references).
A word of warning: given that even the longest text included in this volume is only ~ 40 pages long, Pais obviously does not attempt to flesh out the physical concepts involved, and limits himself to giving physically accurate descriptions that would, however, not qualify as explanations. This could have the consequence that some parts of the book may be unintelligible to laymen.
Minor quibbles aside, this book clearly deserves 5 stars.

People in science........2003-03-08
What makes Pais' book especially compelling and captivating
is that he knew the main players in Science over the period of a lifetime. And then the unique quality of his writing! The
result is a page turner. We are given a glimps into the personal lives of Bohr, of Dirac, of Einstein, of von Neumann, of Pauli,
and of others of the major profiles in science in the twentieth century;-- and Pais offers his own thoughts on their scienceas well. Based on having worked with them...Pais also wrote landmark biographies of Bohr and Einstein. Highly recommended.
Intelligent and warm biographies.......2002-01-02
The physicist Abraham Pais met these scientists and developed strong human bonds with them. So, besides concise accounts of their scientific contributions, he tells us some moving, insightful and unforgettable events of their lives.
Excellent biographies of sixteen who remade our worldview.......2000-08-27
Someone once wrote that there was more imagination in the mathematician and physicist Archimedes than in all of Homer. The arguments in favor of that statement are very strong. It took a great deal of original, abstract thought to solve the problems that Archimedes resolved. However, that pales before the level of original and abstract thinking that went into the creation of the modern models of the physical universe. Some of the confirmed results are so strange that it is simply impossible to relate them to what we see on the macro scale.
The collection of people who created these models are described in this book. Their exploits make very interesting reading, and although some could be placed in the strange genius category, most were otherwise rather ordinary. Some were devoted to their lives outside physics and others knew only physics. Some had tight partnerships with their spouses while others had tolerant spouses who accepted extra-marital affairs. While including more of the slush would have made the book more interesting to the voyeur and perhaps increased sales, the author raises the personal details only when they are needed.
The true measure of a quality biography of a scientist is that you find their lives interesting even when their science is being discussed. Such is the case here. These giants of the physical realm led interesting lives that the author describes very well in relatively few pages. The physics is also made quite interesting, in that the explanations make you appreciate their accomplishments all the more.
Given the wide variety of personalities described here, one is led to the conclusion that it takes all kinds to make a world view.
Influential 20th century physicists.......2000-06-07
Pais has previously written terrific biographies of Niels Bohr and Albert Einstein. Here he writes about sixteen brilliant 20C scientists who don't quite have the same name recognition as those two, but who made towering contributions - people like Dirac and von Neumann. And as a physicist himself, he knew them personally and worked with some of them. In fluid prose he makes the excitement of their milieu and their science come alive.

Customer Reviews:
A lot of Help!.......2006-12-17
Helps to understand what you are experiencing as a partner of a survivor. I highly recommend this and What About Me.
Not quite what I thought it would be.......2006-05-27
The title of this book is misleading. Only about 10% of the book is targeted toward partners of incest survivors and not childhood sexual abuse survivors in general, and it isn't a very long book. A lot of the issues I thought a book for partners of incest survivors in specific would discuss weren't addressed or only grazed on. I didn't feel like it had a lot of sound and non-obvious advice for helping my partner deal with some of his more complicated emotions or my own feelings in regards to his abuse. I felt like a lot of the book was just repeatedly saying, "Be careful, don't be co-dependant! You're probably co-dependant if you were attracted to a victim of sexual abuse! In fact you probably were abused yourself! Reading books alone won't help you, get into a 12 steps program or see a therapist!" as far as your own emotions went and as far as helping your partner it could be summed up as, "Don't be needlessly harsh, cruel, and insensitive!" Aside from that the focus seemed narrowly set on survivors who were traumatically abused by parents. The only mention of sibling-sibling abuse seemed to write it off as more likely than not harmless if the children were in a similar age range, downplaying the potential for damage if the abuser is only a few years older and things were fairly consensually even if the younger sibling was being robbed of a well-paced sexual development. Other issues only briefly mentioned were the complex emotions partners might have to face when interacting with the involved family member(s) once they've obtained knowledge of the abuse and seeing their partner continue to remain close with their abusers, survivors still having unwanted lingering attractions to their abusers, and the emotions of survivors who never repressed the memory and felt abandoned when they got old enough that abuse ceased. Overall I would have to say the book didn't help me very much, I wouldn't really recommend it unless I knew a person was having trouble understanding the facts and misdirecting their anger about the events on their partner instead of their partner's abuser.
Not the best book to start with.............2005-09-22
I think anyone considering this as a starting point is way off.I am a partner of a survivor. There are three books which I have read at this point. "What about me" and "Allies in healing". I feel that these latter two were the books which I gained the most from.
This book is very clinical in it's approach.Great for a threrapist. Not good for the reader. The other two mentioned come from a much more human place. "Me?" is written by the partner of a survivor, "Allies" by an authority on the subject and a survivor herself. Do yourself a favor, start with one of the other two, then come back to this one. After all, it is all about arming ourselves with info isn't it? Read them all, just read this one last.
Fantastic.......2004-02-26
This is a fantastic book for couples where one has been through abuse. I rate this book very high. Easy to read and to understand. Excellent resource.
Also let me recommend for those abused: Nightmares Echo, Beauty For Ashes and Lost Boy.
A must-read for partners of incest survivors.......2003-08-30
Being a survivor myself, and suffering from several mental illnesses, including Dissociative Identity Disorder, I was married eight years before my husband decided to talk with my current therapist and figure out things like: Why I can't just get over it or Why, when having a flashback, I can't simply say, "Oh, this is nothing but my imagination." My therapist recommended this book to him.
At first, the book seemed a bit on the old side, but as we read, we discovered many nuggets and wonderment within. This book will explain to partners of incest survivors what the process is (internally) in dealing with trauma, the stages, how to get over their own denials and feelings, how to deal with a strained sex life, dealing with core issues, problem areas, children, transference, the traits of an abuser, the traits of a survivor, getting and staying healthy, finding partner's support groups, etc.
My personal favorite chapter is the one on understanding the survivor. It talks of every kind of characteristic from low sex drive to self-harm to eating disorders and beyond. This book is an asset to anyone interested in truama, but a MUST for anyone married to or seeing someone who's encountered incest of any sort. Highly recommended! :v)
Book Description
If you like to eat well but don't relish the thought of going to the supermarket on a rainy Sunday afternoon or are too tired to shop after work, this is the cookbook for you. What to Cook When You Think There's Nothing in the House to Eat puts your pantry to work, showing you how pasta, beans, canned tuna, eggs, and cheese can form the basis of nutritious, tasty, and easy meals. There are tips on selecting, purchasing, and storing ingredients, along with recipes that feature each ingredient. A box of spaghetti, for example, "lasts longer than most marriages." Add olive oil, garlic, and a pinch of hot pepper, and you've got a meal -- Spaghetti Aglio Olio -- that anyone would applaud. This is not fancy food. It's everyday fare for those with even the most basic cooking skills.

Great cookbook.......2007-10-09
We use this a lot and have also given it as a gift. Very useful for a student or someone who is on a budget. Arthur Schwartz is an excellent writer, so the book is entertaining even if you aren't looking for a recipe.
How Can You Live Without Arthur's Banana Bread?.......2007-08-31
Right on, all you discerning people. This is the ONE cookbook among a myriad that I WOULD NOT give up. It's as good to read as it is to cook from. The cabbage and noodles, kugel variation --- super! It's as valuable for a sophisticated cook as for a beginner.
Essential for all cooks!.......2006-08-16
This is the best idea book ever! He takes bland staples and
gives you a recipe! One day I was confounded, feeling flu and at
home. I saw the recipe for Oriental Lemon Sauce for Noodles.
Lemon juice, soy sauce, fresh ginger, garlic and sesame oil! All
the things that fight infection! His simple little recipes have
actually taught me how to cook, or at least illustrated cooking basics. From wilted celery soup, to microwave peanut brittle, nomatter what you don't have on hand, there is a recipe to satisfy what staples you do have on hand!
If I could only have one book, this would be it. .......2006-02-16
I have hundreds of books and a couple dozen cookbooks, but if I were only allowed to keep one book out of all of them, this would be it. Every time I serve something from this book, people ask for the recipe; Thanks to this book alone, I've acquired a reputation as a brilliant cook! True, he goes a little heavy on the lemon and a little light on the garlic, but that's a matter of taste, and anyway there's plenty of room for making your own notes, and the non-glossy paper takes pencil.
The best cookbook........2005-12-10
I've had this book since it was published in 1991 and I still use it. Spaghetti with yogurt, carrot ribbons, outrageous tasty recipes all made with ingredients on hand. Suggestion for stocking your cupboards. Tuna and beans! I guarantee you, if this author presents a recipe, it is going to be delicious and doable.
I used to live in the city, and from my busstop to home was a line of ethnic restaurants, excellent pizza joints, and gourmet restaurants. And I hopped past them all to try Arthur's recipes at home. The book paid for itself in a month!

A Helpful Secondary Book For Rabbit Care.......2003-10-17
This particular book has not been the most helpful rabbit care book for me, not because of the content, but because it seems to focus more on keeping outdoor rabbits rather than indoor rabbits. It also assumes that rabbit care is the top priority of those who keep rabbits. Most of us, who keep rabbits as house pets do not have the time to hunt and gather the food the author suggests. We buy hay and pellets at the local pet store and provide a few fruit slices as a treat. However, this book is helpful. For one thing it lists poisonous plants as well as edible food that rabbits enjoy. Since rabbits always seem to find a way to eat something they are not supposed to eat (I paid $436 in vet bills when my Dutch decided to eat a calla lily), information about keeping rabbits out of mischief and appropriate food is helpful. The book is also illustrated and contains wonderful plates identifying certain breeds of rabbits as well as description of various breeds.
Probably the greatest strength of this book is that it takes rabbit care seriously, just as one would care for a dog or cat. Its major flaw is that it is now a bit dated. I would recommend this book as a secondary handbook and since it is not too expensive, it is worth having on the shelf.
Great Book but not enough color.......2001-11-11
I love this book, but i am already an experienced rabbit owner and i know what i am doing. although this book is very detailed in the different aspects of pet care, and things like that, it is not a book to read for entertainment. if you are interested in entertainment, you may want to turn to Hop To It! or The House Rabbit Handbook. Great book for a newbie though!
If You Own A Rabbit, You Must Have This Book.......2000-05-16
This book should be mandatory for rabbit owners. I found the information to be extremely useful, from what food to feed them to what symptoms indicate what illnesses. You'll learn why rabbits behave the way they do and how to keep your rabbit safe and happy.
Some of the chapters weren't relevant to me because I was not raising a show rabbit. I wasn't interested in the information about breeding, breeds, etc. but it was interesting nonetheless.
The first time my rabbit was ill, I panicked and that's what prompted me to buy the book. Fortunately, he had just eaten too much grass and was fine by the next day. I referred to this book countless times in my rabbit's 9 years.
If you own a rabbit, buy the book. It's interesting reading and will put your mind at easy when your rabbit isn't feeling well. You can teach your kids how to properly care for their bunnies which will add to your enjoyment and will help you ensure your bunny is with you for many years.
One word of advice: hide the book from your rabbit. Rabbits love to chew on just about everything!
This isn't the best book for rabbit breeders in the U.S........1999-09-24
I have this book, and although the author does a fair job in describing the care of a rabbit, she simply has things left out that should be included.
The listings of breeds (and show terminology) are from the UK, and would confuse readers in the US. Same for the listing of plants (which I think she went overboard on this area.)
There IS a decent section on genetics, however it isn't as accurate or current as I would prefer.
Read it at the library, but don't waste your money on it if you want serious information.
good easy to understand on my first rabbit.......1999-05-15
it is good and easy to understand I like it a lot as english is not my first language and it shows picture and explain clearly

My Kind of Book.......2007-01-03
This is the kind of book that you can use for inspiration for all kinds of scrapbooking, party favors, card making, decorating, you name it. I love her attention to detail that I think adds more personality to your project than big bucks. If she were to write another book, I would buy it sight unseen.
Fun Book!.......2006-07-06
Dena Fishbein, the host of the DIY television show "Embellish This", describes embellishing as "turning the ordinary into the extraordinary"; i.e. transforming everyday objects into one-of-a-kind treasures. The projects in this book fit the bill and are all quite lovely, although I found the ones which required painting a bit intimidating. This book has something for everyone. Painters, scrapbookers, paper crafters, fabric lovers and stampers all have a wealth of projects to choose from in this book.
About the painted projects; if this is your thing, then you'll enjoy every aspect of this book. I, on the other hand, am not a good painter and found it quite frustrating to salivate over these gorgeous projects only to be disappointed with directions which stated "if you feel inspired, paint a pretty landscape, a still-life scene, or other work of art on the front of the dresser", or "paint glasses with any design you like". Well, the design I like is usually one I haven't a clue how to paint. I think it would have been helpful to have some kind of template to follow (or blow up on a copier). You were just instructed to paint. One way around this was to use a fabric image or stamp whenever possible.
Conversely, the non-painted projects were just as lovely and more up my alley. I loved the floral and decoupage projects, especially the votives on page 58. I also enjoyed the embellished candleholder, with its hodge-podge of buttons, tassels and fibers. Towards the end of the book Dena shows you how to apply the embellishing techniques on a bigger scale by painting different rooms in your home using her own home as an example. Absolutely fabulous!!!
Embellish Your Home is a fun, enjoyable book loaded with plenty of colorful "eye candy" for decorating and craft enthusiasts. Regardless of my painting phobia, I would highly recommend this book as a wonderful addition to any home craft library.
Enjoy.

I've done a couple of the projects already and have found how fun it can be, and still manage to have time to spend with my two girls at home. My 3yr.old even helped me make the beaded candles!
You definitely won't be dissapointed, I recommend it to all my friends - including those who have never even crafted before!

Down-to-earth, practical advice on gardening.......1998-07-22
Although this book is titled "Rock Gardening", it has great appeal to all gardeners. It includes introductory information on how to create rock, bog and woodland gardens, how to propagate plants, maintenance, etc. But the best part is the comprehensive plant descriptions, with practical advice on their cultural requirements, difficulty and propagation. Although there are no color pictures, I find this is the book I rely upon most for accurate information on lesser known rock garden and woodland plants.

The Betty Ford Center Book of Answers.......2005-09-01
This was eye opening. I am the family member of an alcoholic and this book tells the truth about addiction!
Essential for addicts/alcoholics and their families.......2005-08-04
This book is written in a simple question and answer format. This helps make important information very understandable. The book covers both alcoholism and drug addiction and basically, they are the same disease since alcohol is a drug. What Dr. West makes clear is that addiction is a life long battle. Even after years of recovery, relapsing is possible. Accordingly, it is essential to attend AA meetings or NA meetings even after years of sobriety. If you learn only one thing from this book, it should be that recovery never ends and that, therefore, the alcoholic must never again have a drink and that the addict must never again try any kind of mood altering drug, regarless of whether that drug is legal or not.
In the answer to one question, Dr. West sets forth the outwardly visible symptoms of addiction. What he had to say was uncanny. I have a family member who is a recovering addict and Dr. West could have been describing him. The family member had mood swings, lowered grades and eventually nonattendance at school, different friends than he used to have, he lied, stole, and basically fit Dr. West's description perfectly. I thank God that due to therapy of the type advocated by Dr. West, my loved one is in recovery and has a new, positive attitude. Seeing this description and learning that people fitting the description can and do remain in recovery has given me hope.
I highly recommend this book. Although it was written several years ago, it is in no way dated and remains completely relevant. It is a truly essential resource for addicts and their families.
My Life was Saved.......2001-09-22
During Family week at the BFC I sat in a lecture conducted by Dr. West. It was during this informal lecture that I came to the reality that I had all of the characteristics of an alcoholic and was in need of help to save my life just as much if not more than the family member I was there for. The main item in the "Book of Answers" that made me realize this, among other things, is listed on pages 20-21. Dr. West reviewed them and realized I had most of the attributes of an alcoholic.
I've been clean and sober for over 10 years. BFC and Dr. West literally "SAVED MY LIFE". I only pray that many other lives as well as relationships can be saved and mended by reading this "Book of Answers". Thank You Betty Ford Center and Dr. West.
Thank You Dr. West.......2000-02-07
This book is a compendium of multiple newspaper columns written over several years. In it Dr West shares practical knowledge, insights, and compassion that is rarely seen in medical texts. As a medical oncologist I have occasion to work with many people with varying stages of alcoholism. I have found this book very helpful for practical points of view that are not seen often in medical literature. I recommend this easy to read useful book by this authoritative source to all in the healthcare profession.
Essential insight for those dealing with substance abuse.......1999-10-26
A clear, easy to read but thourough treatment of substance abuse and it's effects on the victims and their families. Dr. West is able to explain many types of substance abuse, their origins and then make practical suggestions for recovery.

Book Description
Contemporary architectural theory emphasizes the importance of "tectonics," the term used to articulate the relationship among construction, structure, and architectural expression. Yet, little consideration has been given to the term's origins or historical significance. In this study, Oechslin examines the attempts by early Modern theoreticians of architecture to grapple with the relationship between appearance and essence. He locates the culmination of this search for "truth" in architectural expression in the work of Adolf Loos and the writings of theorists such as Bötticher, Le Corbusier, and Lux.
