Notice: This book is not for kids. Now that the US Navy has pulled out of Vieques Island, one of the highest peaks on the Island will never be the same. Reports are that Vieques has never developed as it was anticipated. A comparison to Vieques Island might be Dominica, however Vieques certainly had more night life in the dark than Dominica has today under the lights. Just reading the chapter titled "The Woman in the Red Dress," will set the average female reader aflame with passion. This is the perfect book for your Pastor's wife to keep at her bedside, because the cover does not give away the passionate life of the young, hot-blooded Marines of the Cold War, serving in the years 1952 and 1953. Vieques is just a short hop from San Juan or St. Thomas, and any time a small Navy boat headed for these weekend liberty ports, a few of the Marines from Radio Hill could be seen boarding, dressed in their class A khaki uniforms, ready for a hot time in Hispanic Caribbean towns. The things these young men did would have them court-maritaled for years if they were serving in Iraq. Read about old John, the native of Vieques, who brought them bananas, soda pop, Don Q Rum, and other contraband, as well as hot Hispanic Senoritas from Isabel Segunda. You'll want to catch the next flight to San Juan!
Five Stars for History that Otherwise would be Lost.......2005-03-23
Memoirs like this one provide the only look available on small bits of American military life. Generally, they are privately published and done many years after the fact at the request of friends or family.
Two other examples are The Belles of Shangri-La and Korea Between the Wars.
Belles of Shangri-La, The by George Abraham is a memoir by a U.S. Army doctor stationed with black American soldiers in Liberia during WWII. They were guarding the Firestone rubber plantation.
Korea Between the Wars: A Soldier's Story by Fred Ottoboni is a memoir about a young man serving during the post war US military occupation of what became the Republic of Korea.
I appreciate the service done by the authors of these books in writing them. Five stars for history that otherwise would be lost.
There are many books available about WWII and the Korean War but you won't find many about GIs in Liberia or the 1945-48 US military occupation of Korea. And this book is the only one that includes a view of what it was like being a young marine assigned to Vieques 50 years ago.
The military bases on either end of Vieques are gone now leaving the former military land--purchased from its owners shortly before the US entered WWII--almost entirely pristine and still under federal care, meaning no development. Not surprisingly, and in a typical Pyrrhic victory for the looney left, Naval Station Roosevelt Roads closed soon after the Navy left Vieques, devastating the economy of eastern Puerto Rico. Nice going, guys.

The next best thing to living in an Indonesian rain forest with these creatures is reading this account. The animals are of course, her main focus but the daily life and the reality of bringing a child into this forest are all examined and told with the same voice. The rain forest, sights, sounds and smells come to life through her vivid descriptions. I have reread this book along with all of Goodall's and the Fossey books and this is a necessary addition to the knowledge of great apes.

If you are inspired by dedicated peoplewith vision and or conservation this is a must read. Professor Galdikas is an amazing woman and is part of the Leakey sisterhood ie Fossey, Goodall and Galdikas, who have made life time studies of apes.

Wonderful book! Galdikas brings us from her very beginnings as a young woman studing Orangutans to a true scientist breaking new ground as Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey did. The information and descriptions she passes along to the readers is endearing, educational, and brings you to another world. Read this yourself, you will be enchanted, you will cry, you will be happy you experienced this book. Thank you Birute!
Birute's personal account of two decades at Tanjung Puting.......2003-07-13
Having spent time volunteering at Tanjung Puting, I felt this book was wonderfully written. Although The Professor (Birute) is not an open person, she willingly shared her personal feelings in this book. She tells us in a wonderful fashion about the difficulties of establishing Camp Leakey in Kalimantan. She discloses much about marriage and divorce from Rod, and raising Binti. Her account of Rod's efforts during 7 1/2 years at Tanjung Puting are wonderful in that she credited him with so much. I appreciate her assimilation into Indonesian and Dayak culture. At first glance it may be difficult for us to understand how she could marry Pak Bohap, a native Dayak who even admits to having eaten orangutans. But her writing about this relationship is so understandable. Overall, this is a wonderful book by a woman entirely devoted to the conservation of one of the world's great apes. The story of her life in Borneo is fascinating. A great read about one of Louis Leakey's proteges!
Leakey's third "angel".......2002-05-07
The other two "angels" on their mission of Great Ape rescue were of course Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey who studied respectively Chimpanzee's and Mountain Gorillas.(Fossey we know died for her cause). Birute Galdikas started later than the others (1971) and her Great Ape - Orangutans - were also less known and in some respects, less regarded than the others.
Does Galdikas' work in Borneo and her story in REFLECTIONS OF EDEN remedy this oversight? Only somewhat as this book is as much an autobiography as it is a natural history of the "men of the forest". Galdikas' affection for her mentor Louis Leakey is obvious as is her fondness for her fellow primatologists. "Dian, Jane Goodall, and I were family. Louis Leakey had recognized us as kindred souls and become our spiritual father." This connectedness she felt extended to the mystical. When Fossey was murdered in Rwanda in 1985 Galdikas tells us "even before I learned of her death, I knew Dian would be killed, I knew this was her destiny."
It should not be a surprise to read here that a scientist that feels this way will express a high degree of passion about her subjects. All three of these primatologists at different times have talked about "my apes" and this attachment is certainly reciprocated by the Orangutans. Galdikas tells about Sugito an orphaned young male "who selected me as his one and only, his mother". Orangs are the most arboreal and reclusive of the Great Apes and this naturally provides a challenge to studying them. Galdikas has nevertheless learned more about their social behavior than any other researcher. She mixes these insights in with her own life in the jungle at "Camp Leakey" and with life in Indonesia as a whole. In this context Galdikas even recognizes that for a Third World country like Indonesia, conserving and rehabilitating the Orangutans is yet just another priority that they must effectively juggle with. With this book she continues to encourage both them and us to care.

Grow Young with HGH.......2007-10-09
The book is long winded and in essence probably simple enough for anyone to understand. That being said, it does not refer the reader to their private Physicians strongly enough. If you think you have a hormone deficiency, of any kind, a blood test would be in order. NOT buying what You think you need from a foreign pharmacy, as this could be potentially dangerous and or harmful to your body. While some attention is paid to foods and timing, there should be more emphasis placed on how to get your bodies own "factory" to increase production.

My life has changed dramatically for the better since using the info in this book. At first I got a sub-lingual product but it didn't do anything. Then I got Secretagogue Gold and my God, what a change. I went from skinny to buffed. I used the Secretagogue Gold product for two months then quit because it is too expensive and too acidic for me. I have bought the powdered amino acids and I mix my own, like the examples in this book. I take the various vitamins and herbs at the same time and go to bed after a 3 hour water fast. Everybody is amazed, especially me. I'm so much stronger and healthier now. Don't believe all the hype about all these hgh products, go by this book. You'll be a buffed out stud at age 51 (my age) or whatever age you are. You'll laugh at the negative responders on this review page. Buy the book and read it. Good luck.
Good, but needs more warnings and caveats.......2005-10-16
The book needs a revision - generally good, it is too much
on the pro-side and doesn't warn sufficiently against
taking too much and the possible cancer issues of too much
and why the natural turndown of GH by the body itself during
aging is an anti-cancer approach to permitting longer life
by preventing GH-caused cancer.
Nor does it adequately describe why it is important to
stay within range if you are low but not to supplement
beyond if you are normal or high.
Also, it is out-of-date with respect to suppliers as very
inexpensive injectable recombinant GH is now available from
major non-U.S. corporations that are as good or better than
U.S.-manufactured GH, for a fraction of the price.

Unlike some of the other reviewers, I think both this book and HGH are great. This book is a great place to start getting some information on this issue. Perhaps the reason why hgh is not working for people is due to their use of synthetic hgh drugs that have side effects... Myself and some of my family members have been using a natural hgh called yf-8 that causes our body to naturally produce hgh. So, it is not that hgh is bad or doesn't work, it just has to work with your body.
This book offers great insight into the many benefits that hgh can do for our aging bodies. Get a copy and see for yourself.

HGH precursors and all similar products have been proven useless, but Klatz has made his money, so no problem. Very short exercise sessions of high intensity will help your body create the proper 'mix' of hormones..... Go to your health club and find a weight on the leg press machine that you can do slow reps on for one minute. At the end of the one set, you should find it impossible to move the weight,(and feel horrible :-). Do a similar set of of seated chest press and seated row. YOU'RE DONE! You can do more if you want, according to what results you're going for, but a full effort on these three sets will get your hormones going. Actually, the leg press -alone- will get everything going quite well. Say no to drugs.

Orally taken, (supposed), 'homeopathic' HGH 'precursers', 'secretogogues', or whatever they're being called in the latest industry scam, simply -don't work-. Ask yourself this: where are the millions of satisfied customers? There certainly are millions who have tried this stuff. Klatz is known to have connections with manufacturers that he doesn't mention. This book specializes is making _incorrect_ assumptions, such as:1/ If HGH injections work , then oral HGH will work 2/ If certain conditions can be helped with HGH, then HGH can further improve the strength of those who aren't sick, and 3/'1' and '2', as applied to precursers. If you read this book with wishful thinking, the examples may inspire you, but if you read with a rational mind, they will seem like the rediculous exagerations that they are. GOOD NEWS! there is one safe,effective way to up your HGH: short intense weight workouts.

CLINICALLY SUPPORTED INFORMATION FOR THOSE WHO WANT HGH........1998-12-07
Before reading this book, my knowledge of HGH was limited to heresay and small articles here and there. But it was enough to want to further my investigation into how this drug would help me. After purchasing and reading this book, I forwarded it to my physician, who them perscribed HGH for me. The benifits for me have been amazing! I have had no kidney stones in 4 months, my hair and nails are growing faster than when I was a teenager, and my obese body has changed the fat distribution, where I now have a waist, and the fat around my abdomine has decreased, and I haven't even really started the whole exercise and dieting routine yet. I have been reading the book over and over to learn more information and to formulate how others may benefit from it, and am looking forward to a follow up book with any new information and studies. This book is just spectacular. There is just a vast range of topics in this book. There are chapters on chemical immobilization, medical termnology, effects of stress, and numerous chapters on restraint procedures by Order/Family and in some cases individual species. Each restraint procedure has detailed pictures. The only problem I have with this book is the pictures are black and white, other than that fact the pictures are very clear and informative. If you work in any wildlife facility, or plan to, I highly recomend buying this book. Also would come in handy for any biologist or zoologist who plans to do in the field studies because of the indepth chapters on chemical restraint/immobilization.

An excellent information source for the novice or expert animal handler. I use this book extensively for handling of my animals, non of which are exotics. Fowler describes each technique clearly, in terms everyone can understand. This book will be a valued addition to any library whether you're a farmer, zookeeper or dog owner.

I've never done a review before but, all I would like to say is that it might be better with color pictures,defenitions of words in the back incase they might not be understandable,and larger print.

AUTHORBIO: Joan, who was taught to sew on a Singer treadle machine by her grandmother, has been a quilter for many years. She has her own pattern company, Petal Play, which she operates from her home in Massachusetts. In addition, she has taught and lectured extensively throughout the country. She has appeared on television on the PBS show "Quilting from the Heartland" with Sharlene Jorgenson, and on the HGTV program "Simply Quilts" with Alex Anderson. REVIEW: I am not sure why 3-D applique created with fusibles is traditional. Perhaps the reference is to the background blocks in the 11 quilts. These serve to set off the 11 flowers which could easily be combined in different ways or on other backgrounds. The flowers are lovely and utilize detailed petals, beaded stamens and other realistic touches. They include dandelion, magnolia, water lily, coneflower and Christmas cactus. The instructions appear complete and well illustrated.

This book has changed the way I look at flowers. I can now duplicate them easily using this technique, while at the same time maintaining the realistic look. It was great fun. Joan Shay is an artist.

Back To Basics With Home Schooling.......2000-04-13
This was probably one of the best books I have read on Home Schooling. The Moore's get back to the basics with the teachings of our children. The information is nothing new, but it is something that hasn't been done in the last 50 yrs. They have brought back the training of kids from how it had been done for hundreds of years to how it is done now. After reading the wonderful suggestions and life stories I feel I to can do this wonderful thing for my children. Thanks again Dr. and Mrs. Moore.
