Book Description
In a fresh look at the end of America's longest war, the editors have re-created the last days of America's Vietnam experience. Using interviews, documents, photographs, maps, a glossary, and a chronology, the editors dissect "Operation Frequent Wind," the massive air and sea evacuation of South Vietnamese and Americans from Vietnam. The war's final moments comprise a snapshot of war in its entirety, complete with chaos, courage, and politics.
Customer Reviews:
The untold story.......2000-03-12
This is an in-depth look at the days leading up to the evacuation of Vietnam, by my Father who was there on the USS Midway. Learn about the heroism and tragedy of this dark period of American history. My favorite story is about the Vietnamese Air Force pilot who flew his entire family out in a 2 man Piper Cub.
What makes this book fascinating is the different philosophies of the 2 authors. Toby was the son of a Navy admiral, who would serve his country for 20 years. Ed is an ex-Vietnam war protester with a doctorate in history. Toby has his doctorate in management science. What makes this book work is Ed's devotion to historical accuracy and Toby's extensive connections within the military community.
Book Description
Goldberger's War chronicles one of the U.S. Public Health Service's most renowned heroes--an immigrant Jew who trained as a doctor at Bellevue, became a young recruit to the federal government's health service, and ended an American plague. He did so by defying conventional wisdom, experimenting on humans, and telling the South precisely what it didn't want to hear.

A cardiologist's revolutionary weight-loss plan that allows dieters to enjoy good carbs while still losing weight
The glycemic index has been the basis of many popular diets. But it doesn't take into account the serving sizes people actually eat and eliminates too many foods for dieters to stick with it. Now Dr. Robert Thompson's breakthrough program uses the glycemic load--the glycemic index adjusted for serving size--to take the GI a step forward. The glycemic load is a more accurate and effective tool in controlling weight and insulin resistance, allowing dieters to eat more foods while still burning fat, cutting cravings, and speeding up their metabolism. Safe, simple, and scientifically proven, it's the smartest weight-loss plan yet.
Customer Reviews:
this book changed my life.......2007-09-30
I read glycemic load diet 3 months ago and gave up all kinds of starch and have never felt better in my whole life. I don't get hypo-glycemic reactions unless I have a lot of fruit or I get into raisins. My best bet is to eat protein with veggies and stay away from fruit other than a moderate amount of berries. If I over do nuts, I will gain weight. I lost about 7 pounds and am still losing. It took a while to fine tune it, but I will never go back to eating any sort of starch or grain again. I realize that I am physically intolerant of these types of foods. Thomas explained the toxicity part of starch the best out of all the books out there on GI diets. I have bought 5 of his books for my family and friends.
So Far, So Good.......2007-09-09
It sounds great. I'll come back and let you know how it works in November, when my next blood test is scheduled.
Great book for diabetics (or anyone else).......2007-07-04
This diet takes the glycemic index one step further--it actually guides you through eating 'real' food, not just one ingredient here and one ingredient there. It is not a complete guide--you still need to exercise portion control and put some work into your diet--but it is a good way to start. At least it gets you thinking about what you are eating.
This book does need a more complete of foods and their scores, but this diet is relatively new, and I think that will be coming soon.
Very well written, scientific, common sense.......2007-06-07
I never thought I would deviate from the good Dr Atkins, but when a friend who was dropping weight through this plan recommendeded this book, I broke down and bought it.
I haven't looked back since.
It's not *really* a diet (it's honestly a life-long way of eating), and there are no 'phases'. There is little to no chance for failure because the common sense in the book makes it extremely user-friendly. He doesn't promise a low-carb plan, but he promises one which has kept even a person like me with goofy blood sugar from starving or feeling restricted in what I can have. I can stick to this because it is easy and makes sense. And that is saying something!
There are no cheats on this way of eating because you don't need them. You don't miss them.
I appreciate Dr Thompson writing this book. After being an Atkins fan for two decades, I've found something I like just as much, but for different reasons.
I also want to point out that Dr Thompson, unlike many other low carb borrowers of existing wisdom, gives kudos to Dr Atkins in his book, and that is something I appreciate as well, being an Atkins fan.
Also, having done Atkins for so long, I can attest that it is extremely difficult to cook for a family on that plan (sometimes harder than others). On this way of eating, it's easy for everyone to follow, kids and adults. He even includes some wonderful recipes to get us started.
In my opinion, this book is especially worth it for those who felt hungry on South Beach and who felt deprived on Atkins. It is the culmination of all that is good in wholesome and decadent eating while remaining true to blood sugar, and those needing to lose weight.
A Lifestyle Change In Eating.......2007-01-10
I was so impressed with this book, I purchased a number of them and gave them out as gifts. What an awakening. It was easy to read and follow. This book has changed our whole lifestyle. Thank's to Dr. Thompson for writing this book.
Book Description
The Glycemic Index (GI) is a highly acclaimed route to weight loss, but it has one big drawback: GI values don't take portion sizes into account. Glycemic Load (GL) values ajust the GI score for real-world portions and thus give a more accurate measure of the way carbohydrates affect the body.
For example, fresh fruit seems like a healthier dessert than a Snickers candy bar, but, in fact, the GI score for apricots is 57, while a Snickers is only 55. This happens because the GI score is computed based on a serving of apricots that is over 7 times the size of the candy bar. When adjusted to the real-world serving size, the candy bar has a GL of 31, while the apricot's GL value is only 4.
Using these more accurate and sensible GL scores, the Easy GL Diet Handbook offers a plan for healthy weight loss and reduced risk of diabetes that is easier to follow and includes numerous foods that the Atkins, South Beach and GI diets wrongly consider "off limits."
Book Description
Because the glycemic load (GL) system properly takes into account portion size, GL dieting is the easiest and most precise weight loss method that uses the powerful glycemic index (GI). The GL Cookbook and Diet Plan makes it even easier. The book offers a vast selection of GL-scored recipes so dieters can choose dishes they love while following a proven program for permanent weight loss without hunger. The GL Cookbook and Diet Plan includes easy-to-prepare recipes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as snacks and desserts. And thanks to the GL correction for portion size, many popular foods mistakenly banned in GI dieting are found in delicious recipes like Grilled Pears with Blue Cheese, Orange Pork Casserole with Sweet Potato and even Fresh Berry Brulee.

Book Description
Until recently, Japanese cooking has remained in the shadows, but the remarkable and long-awaited upsurge in the popularity of sushi and noodle bars and, subsequently, the growth in the availability of ingredients, have put the country firmly on the culinary map. In The Japanese Kitchen Kimiko Barber invites you on a personal tour of her country's exquisite cuisine. She presents 100 essential ingredients and 200 recipes from all over Japan. Every ingredient, from the familiar to the unknown, has its own separate entry giving in-depth background information on history, appearance, taste, manufacture, buying, storing, culinary use and health benefits. Recipes range from the classic, such as Miso Soup with Tofu or Chilled Soba Noodles with Wasabi and Soy Sauce: to the more contemporary Marinated Tiger Prawns in Sweet Ginger Vinegar, or delicious Seared Beef Tataki.
Customer Reviews:
The Japanese Kitchen Cookbook.......2007-01-09
I was thrilled to be able to purchase this book through Amazon. It was out of print in Australia and my father was desperate to have it. The book is the best collection of authentic Japanese recipes we have ever seen.
a brilliant introduction to Japanese food.......2005-02-07
The ingredients-led entries in this book make it easy to follow and I was amazed by how simple many of the recipes were. The five that I've made have all worked extremely well and been delicious. The photography is stunning and really brought alive the world that is Japanese cooking. I read about the book in Newsweek and thoroughly agree it's one of the best cookbooks I've found in the US during 2004. Just fab.
Japanese cuisine revealed.......2005-01-10
Not only do you learn about the various ingredients which are indigenous to the country, and essential to their cuisine but it is a trip thoughout the country, through pictures and text to the wonderful sights and aromas of this mysterious land. Familiar foods are prepared in totally different ways, and new ones are there to explore. With the advent of many ethnic food shops and open markets catering to many different cuisines one is now able to put a Japanese dish on your own table. Good reading without cooking as well.

Customer Reviews:
Try to visualize your own colorway instead..........2007-05-13
Nancie is local to my town and a very nice person; I loved her shop. However, even calling on local pride, I've got to say that the color choices and sometimes the yarns chosen make these shawls look dated and dowdy. However, the shapes are interesting and useful, like the deep V shape that really covers the "cold parts" better than an oblong, and made up in a prettier yarn, some of them are beautiful. I made the Textured Squares in a rich violet mohair as a gift for a doctor/friend, and whenever I see it in her office I still think, "Oh, pretty!" before I realize I was once intimately acquainted with it for a month.
Someone mentioned that the shawls don't always fit right, and I agree; some are a pretty skimpy. I was lucky enough to try the abovementioned shawl on a friend before I had reached the "turn" of the V, and a good thing, too: I finally had to expand it by almost a third to make a wrap one could really cuddle into. Fortunately, shawls are fairly easy to resize, but it might be prudent to draw out a mock-up on paper or tissue and try it for size, particularly if you are knitting for a tall or generously-sized person.
The instructions are very clear, which is helpful for some of the techniques like entrelac. All in all, the techniques and shapes make it worth owning if you are good at visualizing things, adapting and recoloring etc. If you tend to buy the yarn and color specified, and follow the pattern obediently, this might not be the best book for you. I'm glad I bought it. : )
Beautiful, but.............2006-02-17
I would consider myself a beginner, trying a few more complicated patterns as I gain experience. The patterns in this book are beautiful, well presented, but it will be quite a while before I try one. They are not for the "average beginning knitter". If I'd taken the time to look at this book in another store before ordering it from Amazon, I probably would have waited to purchase it. However, I'm glad I do have it....gives me a goal to work towards. I gave 4 stars because I do think it's a wonderfully done book for the right audience.
Give it a second look............2005-02-05
These shawls and wraps are creative, but some of color combos are awful. If I had picked this book up in a fiber store, I probably would not have bought it because I don't find the items pictured as particularly attractive. However, giving it a second glance (now that I have purchased it sight unseen) I find a number of items I might actually make. I often become chilled right in the middle of my back. Wearing a sweater makes me too warm. And while I like Challi wool scarves, I find they often slip off at inopportune moments. I detest heavy turtle neck sweaters, and pullover weskets that men wear, so I have gone to vests of all sizes and shapes, though the ones that keep me warm in the right spots are often unstylish. Besides, after a while one can become awfully tired of donning a vest for work everyday.
So, I was pleased to discover a great new (to me) item of clothing, a scarf that sits on your shoulders like a small buttoned stole. Nancy Wisemen, author of KNITTED SHAWLS, STOLES, AND SCARVES, has included several diagonal and square scarves that fit over your head and rest on your shoulder. They don't make you feel smothered like a turtleneck, and they don't overheat your arms and lower chest. Made with mohair or a light wool, they are featherweight, so you don't feel as if you are carrying a pack on your back. (Some items are to be constructed with cotton).
By knitting, I am resuming the use of an abandoned skill, so I am fairly rusty. The items in KSSS will stretch me a bit, they are not for beginners.
Uneven quality of patterns.......2004-12-04
The patterns look beautiful on pictures, but some of the pictures are misleading. For example, the picture of Textured Squares Mohair Shawl shows a full-sized shawl draped around the shoulders. I have knit it with the recommended gauge, and found out that the only way the shawl can drape like this is if you wear it sideways. The shawl is very long in the back and too short in the front (barely covered my relatively small chest). Wearing it sideways is impractical in any situation apart from posing for a picture. The pattern did not state finished dimensions, and the picture was misleading. I ended up ripping the whole thing. I wanted to knit the Gossamer Shawl, but then realized that its picture also did not offer a full view of the shawl, so I skipped it. On the positive side, I knit Chenille Diagonal Lace Scarf, and it turned out great.
I would recommend to editors of knitting books to follow the example of Cheryl Oberle's Folk Shawls, and show each shawl in the clearest way possible.
super shawls.......2004-11-13
Chock full of one beautiful design after another, this book and its presentation make it difficult to decide which shawl to try first. The patterns are inventive but not overly complicated, resulting in professional-looking garments with a designer look. Directions are clear and comprehansible. Yes, the yarns used in the photos are expensive, but there are so many cheaper but still lovely substitutes on the market these days, that cost doesn't have to be prohibitive, and you can still attain great looks. I've even substituted yarns of different weights than those specified, and while the size of the shawl is bigger or smaller, I've been happy with them all. Achievable challenges, never boring - my idea of great knitting.

Nothing Spectacular.......2005-01-19
I bought this small guide thinking it would clarify exactly what I should be keeping in mind nutrition-wise being 3 months pregnant ( I had found What to Expect's nutrition section somewhat hard to follow). This very short book had a LOT of repetition and, in some instances, displayed a poor editing job (under the heading of Peanut Allergies you will find the suggestion that you should really eliminate fish, eggs and cows milk from your diet to avoid exposing your baby to some common allergens--whether during pregnancy or while breastfeeding is unclear, while a chapter ago the book strongly advocated 12 ounces of fish per week). All in all, this book did have good information and good looking recipes (hence the three stars) but could have been much better, and I did not find that the quality justified an $8 price tag.
Customer Reviews:
Great resource for moms.......2006-06-27
I didn't expect this book to be as good as it was. It's so detailed about pregnancy weight gain and you can't get that anywhere else. It reassures you that every woman is different but also tells you what kind of weight gain is typical so you have something to measure your weight gain by and can talk sensibly to your doctor if you are concerned; and perhaps avoid any problems later on. I loved the chapter written from the father to be's point of view as well as the author's honest discussion of how pregnancy weight gain was difficult for her and is difficult for every woman who has worried about her weight - which let's face it is most of us. I'd recommend this to any mum to be.
Not impressed..........2006-06-15
Maybe I was expecting too much, but I wish I hadn't wasted my $$$ on this book. The book is dry and contains nothing special. The information written is pretty much common sense thinking. The author really doesn't tell us anything that most of us don't already know. (Avoid "empty" calories from foods such as cakes, cookies, & candy and focus on getting your nutrition from healthier choices.) Save your money, and instead refer to the web or your doctor for information regarding what to eat and how much while pregnant.
A Must-Read for All Moms.......2004-01-27
I read this book during my second pregnancy. Now pregnant again, I knew I needed a refresher. I realize that many books and magazines provide pregnancy and postpartum information, but author (and mother) Theresa Francis-Cheung includes quotes from interviews with moms that really tell it like it is - from their worries about weight gain to battling postbaby blues. The most helpful tip for me is a list of "Nutrient-Rich Foods" (Chap 22) designed to help you lose weight postpartum. I made a copy of it and posted it on my fridge. I recommend it to all moms, whether this is your first child or not.
